I would suggest looking into getting some artist's acrylic matte medium and flow improver. The medium is the paint without the pigment, and the flow improver thins without dispersing the pigment. Washes and contrast-type paints can be easily made with these two items. Contrast-types are primarily medium, paint/ink, and a drop or two of flow improver. Washes reverse the recipe with the medium and flow improver.
You should probably rename this video "How to waste time and paint." Why do you do 2 steps of Zenithal highlights, only to completely cover them with metallic paint?
This is great advice! I do have medium and flow improver laying around here but haven’t played around with it as much. Probably because I am so used to using water for thinning. Thanks for watching!
@@stevenb6806 Yeah you are right I should have emphasized this a bit more. Most of the time I try to get the basic tones and colours down in the beginning to influence the subsequent layers with those tones. As I said in the video, I thought this would add to the reflection effect. But in the end you’re right and the metallic is very strong in covering this and both zenithals aren't really necessary.
It is possible to make a contrast-type paint with a metallic paint, but it will most likely need a bit more flow improver for it to work with most metallic paints, as the metal flakes tend to thicken most paints with them.
@@evanlindsey1100 Yeah I have seen this idea in a Marco Frisoni video, where he does just that but with the same Airbrush Colours I use in this one. Haven't put this to the test though. But thanks for your ideas! Gonna try them out on a future project.
Just a quick question ☺️ How do you protect your paint job from the isopropanol alcohol? You used it in the step for sealing the pigments on the base. Is it done via a layer of matt varnish? Thanks for gelohnt us out 🤙🏼☺️
In this case I just used a very small amount of the isopropyl alcohol through a spray bottle. In my experience the paint job survives this method of application without varnishing the piece first. Just don’t touch the wet parts of the model or try to shift the pigments around with a brush until the alcohol is completely evaporated. If your are unsure of this try to get a hold of something to test this on. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I've heard good things about the Army painter speedpaint metallics, that while they don't really act at all like a speedpaint they are thin with good coverage though they may also be too runny for your tastes
Scale 75 metallics are kinda neat. Great coverage and a good tone. You May give the pure metal pigments range from Greenstuff Stuff World a try. Mix‘em up with matt medium and you got yourself a great true metallic
Awesome! Thanks for the advice! The scale 75 metallics are already on my shopping list but mixing my own metallic paints via pigments and medium is a great idea, too.
great vid! I used the black molotow one4all as primer once and found the primer rubs off of the miniatures very easily, so I am curious if you have seen the same issue so far
Oh really? Hadn’t had that problem when painting exclusively with acrylics. I do had some problems when going in with oils but that was because of thinner I used. It’s not so easy in Germany because there is no clearly labelled white spirit available except for the expensive artist stuff.
@@LenricsRealm ja ich konnte die Farbe leicht mit dem Finger von der Miniatur wischen, war etwas ärgerlich, weil die Farbe sonst sehr toll zu verarbeiten ist und ein sattes Schwarz macht.
