  • Ballan is a small town in the state of Victoria, Australia located on the Werribee River, 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Melbourne the State capital.
It is the main administrative centre for the Shire of Moorabool local government area. Ballan is a small country regional town but also not too far from Melbourne City which takes a one-hour drive. Ballan Town is located in between Melbourne - Ballarat Western Freeway and had a major train stop in between these two cities. Ballan's facilities include a hospital, primary schools, railway station, police station, post office, church, banks, ATM, public play grounds, golf club, hotel, Pub, caravan park, fuel station, restaurants, supermarket and other shops.
Its name originated from the birthplace of Robert von Stieglitz in Northern Ireland. Von Stieglitz took up a pastoral run in the district in 1836 and named it Ballan.
Gold was found in the area in 1851, which brought an influx of prospectors during the Victorian Gold Rush. The Ballan Hotel dates from the gold rush period in 1851. The town became an important staging point for coaches travelling to the Ballarat goldfields. The post office in the township opened around September 1853, although two earlier offices in the area were named Ballan.
The area around Ballan was part of the tribal area of the Wautharong people, part of the Kulin nation. The area was rich in fauna, including kangaroo, kangaroo rats, bandicoots, dingos, and two species of native cat. [citation needed] Many species had vanished by the end of the 19th century, with European settlement.
Ballan Primary School was established on 8 January 1855.
The first Mechanics' Institute in Ballan was built in 1861, with the current Mechanics' Institute built on land purchased in 1881, although the façade was demolished and rebuilt in 1922. The building houses the library for the town and a hall.
St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Ballan was officially opened in July 1866.
Ballan Magistrates' Court closed on 1 January 1983.

Loved the video of Ballan, I have lived in Ballan for a longtime now and just adore it. I even saw my house in the video. Thanks so much for your excellent work.

This small town is growing - we noted a number of new homes being built so it makes for a great location for a country change with an easy railway commute to the city if necessary !

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885Great to have new homes, but not on suburban sized blocks. We are a rural town in western Victoria, not Werribee.

Our initial goal was to produce a video of towns so that those that live there or once lived there, could recall some memories and also show family friends locally, nationally and abroad of their town of residence.

They’ve recently spent a lot of money on the rail station. They’ve upgraded the single track to double track in the immediate area (a loop), built a second platform (it was single platform), built the newnew pedestrian bridge and lifts and paved the new car park. . So you can see they expect the town to grow more in the next ten years.

Absolutely agree with plans for this town - the infrastructure does appear to have been improved for a greater population with new residential estates

Ballan hotel is no longer a hotel. Hasn’t been one for as long as I can remember. But there’s 2 other hotels in town. The Post Office you showed is still the PO and starred in a recent Telstra advert. The butchers has excellent meat. And the cafe a nice burger and fries. Place is starting to boom as it’s a good commuter location if you want a bigger block as it’s an easy 30 minute drive if you work in Ballarat one way or Bacchus Marsh/Melton the other.

The drama I have is that often the people working in the gas station, general store or ''milk bar'' are new Australians working in rural and regional Victoria for their visa and pronounce the town differently - This has caused a fiery debate with the store worker or even new owner with locals, when they overhear the conversation ... It's why I often apologise the way I pronounce the names of people and places when I hear it a few ways ... Even when I use google translate, she pronounces towns and names differently from time to time !!

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885 That reminds me of the eastern edge of Bairnsdale named Lucknow and down the other end there's Lindenow. If visitors pronounce it now , as in " right now " they are dealt with extreme prejudice, " it's Linda no ! Luck no! "

If you want a scenic lark up that way just out of Melton on the old road heading west you'll cross the Djerawarrah creek which you can stop and see the old bridge and Anthony's Cutting. You could visit the site where the old Ashton's Lion Park was. You might not be able to find it, the road was called Lion Park road for a few years after it closed but I think they changed the name to Pentland Hills Rd. That is the beginning of the Pentland Hills.
Too many customers got eaten so they closed the Park mid 80's.
