Aerial view - Walkaround : Coonalpyn Silo Mural - Motorhome Road Trip 4-5 South Australia
On this occasion my young adult son and I transport a motorhome from Melbourne to Adelaide and explore a few locations on the way.
We get to do some father / son bonding, visit some towns and places of interest in those 3 days we are allocated to complete the delivery.
We stay overnight at a township of Coonalpyn to check out the silo mural and have a great breakfast - This was just an overnight stop.

    In my era trains that went TO Serviceton wouldn't need refreshment rooms. Those that went on to Adelaide did so in the middle of the night. I can remember breakfast at Murray Bridge going to Adelaide and at Ballarat coming from Adelaide. But nowhere in between. Not being in airconditioned carriages I spent a lot of the night with my head out the window observing all those strange stations that we passed along the way. Although on the way back I had my sleeping bag and lay along the luggage rack in our compartment. One of us on the floor and one on each seat and one on each luggage rack. Ah the joys of travelling.

    Just a quick note : This location would be an ideal place to have some coin-operated machines (hub) for water, soft drinks, snacks and even souvenirs; This would help generate some funds for the shire (council) community or entrepreneur and the print of free information brochures near the entrance ... many rural country towns without a general store could also benefit with a multi coin-operated machine hub that included bicycle parts (puncture kits etc) if they have a rail-trail or even mobile phone accessories that often get broken ... Even locals might purchase items too with things like milk and bread or items with a 2 week shelf life (power for refrigerated items and cctv would be needed and a supplier that comes past every week or two) !

    Once again a few (I'm guessing more will note it too) have hit the nail on the head with the need for a correction - The comment about Serviceton having the longest platform in Australia is incorrect (now or even when constructed) Not sure why it was mentioned by the caretaker or on literature, but I'll go with that I misheard what was said and read - Thank-you for pointing out the error; I've now read / followed up with research and concur with others about the error.

The guy was very informative and cracked a lot of jokes to make it entertaining - He wished there was a token amount of pay for his and others that take turns to be the key holder ... definately not sandstone. the bricks appear to be calcium silicate bricks called calsil in wa. they used to be common but i dont think they are available anymore. they tolerate alkaline water getting sprayed on them but not acidic water which causes them to rot. they are just made of white sand and cement. they were a very cheap way to build your own house once apon a time. you bought molds and made your own bricks. there used to be more but now only a couple of houses built out of home made bricks in my area. there was a company making them as well. i had a job there for a few days 30 years ago stacking bricks.

    We may see populations returning because it is too expensive to live in the cities? Governments have to be forced to decentralise instead concentrating people in big cities ("to control them/us").

    • @urbanaerialexplorer1885
      @urbanaerialexplorer1885 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Gough Whitlam wanted to decentralise cities and create more rural satellite cities - unfortunately the profit margins were not good for developers as they would have to create new infrastructure such as; roads, street lighting, footpaths, sewer, power, water etc ... They would much rather overwhelm existing infrastructure not built for a sudden increase on demand and let councils and State departments deal with it at no expense to them !

    As well as the other errors mentioned, the pictures shown at 7:21 and 7:31 are clearly not of the same station at the same time. Another source gives 1922 as the date for both photographs(!), but I still doubt that they were both taken in the same year. Perhaps the first is 1922 (when the station opened, and it looks new), and the other a few years later. Or perhaps the first one is not Yallourn at all?

      I believe this has come up before and you are correct - Unfortunately that's how the State Library - Victoria has labelled the stations; error was most likely made by the photographer of the time when submitting them to be archived.

    The historic images were in poor condition and difficult to show clearly - A pleasant surprise was how clean the stations were along the way void of graffiti and any vandalism - I wonder if that's a result of Police Protective Service Officer being proactive to stamp that behaviour out.

      Yea but the engines they use on the trains are double ended so they don’t need being turned. They just run around now. And I assume Vline isn’t going to maintain it for a random steam excursion.

      @@xr6lad , correct, correct, correct on all points. however, country towns guard their turntables jealously. turntables bring steam engines with tourists to their town. the local council will have discussed the issue of the inactive turntable. wycheproof has had an opening ceremony for their recently re-opened turntable complete with a steam train which bought food and drink at the main street, which the train goes down.

    Drove through Myrniyong many times in the late 1960s and 1970s, before the freeway was opened. It's not so obvious now, as the paint has faded, but the building with BATTERIES on it also has a huge SHELL on the roof, which used to be clearly visible when heading east along the freeway.
