Good video Ross. I can see why you would want to send that one down the road. That tractor has a whole mess of issues. Good luck with it.

It is frustrating trying to fix someone else's cobbled up mess. A 90 year old man from church once asked me if I could fix his leaf blower and I told him I'd take a look at it. That evening he brought me a cardboard box full of parts. He had completely disassembled his Craftsman hand held leaf blower and in essence gave me a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle that if I solved would result in me having an operational leaf blower. I did get it reassembled and running but it took me an entire day at my workbench and a couple trips to the small engine shop at the Farmer's Coop to get screws and hardware he'd lost along the way. I feel your pain every step of the way with this tractor Ross.

Ross, that looks like all bad news with that tractor. Sounds like if they don't want to repair it right the best thing is I don't want to touch it. Thanks Michael

I feel for you Ross. I've been in the same place many times. Regretting that I ever said yes to taking on a project. I've learned to look and say NO when someone else has botched it up ahead of me. You are better than I am. I would have left the carb alone and said come get this nightmare off of the property. I would try to be polite, but not sure that would be possible 😂😂. See you later.

As I said before, JB weld the exterior of the crack, and as the weld gets almost hardened lay a piece of course sandpaper over the weld to imprint the look of cast when you pull the sandpaper off. Do that all down the crack.
Old timers used to flush the block out pull all of the freeze plugs on that side and pour plaster of pairs into the bottom of the block. The crap at the bottom of the cylinders actually does not really affect the temperature as much as one would think. All of the heat generation is at the top of the engine. That is the reason Chevrolet went to reverse flow cooling systems where they put the water into the top of the heads and take the water out from the bottom.
We used to do "Drain and flush" on car coolant systems as regular maintenance. We would get a bottle of Snow-Bowl toilet cleaner (hydrochloric acid), which had directions on how to use it in car cooling systems flushing, run the engine for 30 minutes with the Snow-Bowl in the coolant, then drain the radiator and the block using the block drains. Then we would remove the thermostat, and insert a garden hose into the lower radiator opening, with all of the drains open, and run fresh water through the block. That was a back-flushing process to get all of the Snow-Bowl removed rust and scale in the block and radiator and do that until the water ran clear out the thermostat opening. Then we would use the hose to run water backwards through the radiator and the heater hose circuit.
The last steps were to replace all hoses with new hoses, install fresh coolant, check for leaks and collect the $$ for a cooling system flush. The customer had the satisfaction that they were not to expect cooling system failure for a couple of years.
99.9% of the vehicles on the road still had the original antifreeze in the system till a hose expires at 100,000 miles. Preventative maintenance is just not being done. We used to change oil every 1,000 miles and the oil filter every other oil change. All grease fittings were greased and on some older cars there were even fittings on the leaf springs so the leafs in the springs would last longer and not make noise. Tires were lucky to last 10,000 miles and when a car reached 100,000 miles it was ready for the salvage yard.

Ross buddy. It’s the same in every region of the country that carbs have homemade gaskets. lol. I myself like cereal boxes for gaskets lol.

Sadness for sure, I can't help but see some of my own struggles with working on that type of project. Like you, I have had several repairs and fixes that were, let's say, less than idea and probably should not have been done. But alas, my cheapness and my haste to get the job done prevailed more than it should have. Having been retired now for several years, I can tell you that you'll probably repeat some of the same mistakes over again, some multiple times, hopefully NOT!😏 Good luck with the rest of the carburetor fix, I hope your day goes well.

I have used some stuff from Auto Zone I think it is called metal putty. use a grinder to bevel the crack then put the putty on and let it cure. Grind it smooth and it will hold. the block needs to be good and clean. Need to stop drill the crack.

there is a product called K & W block sealer its a good product, of course it would work better with the block cleaned inside. some old timers would also use permatex number 1 on the outside of the block. this permatex will harden its sandable and you can paint over it. JB Weld might be better, just some suggestions

    • @burrridgefarms

K&W is good stuff but it sure is hard to get mixed into suspension. The cans I had were kinda old.

So did the block cracked because the freeze plug was seized in there and the block froze? My unsolicited opinion is to pull the thermostat out so it runs as cool as possible. You said she uses this in parades/tractor drives? Thats a lot of idle time probable not helpful either.

this thing reminds me of my first 9n thing had shitty looks good from the seats at the auction block paint and flex seal on the tires to make them look better but inside was so clapped that i regreted it but had to keep puting money into it because id felt id never get my moneys worth out of it then BOOM the engine went and upon teardown i found jb welded block cracks and GALLONS of stop leak i decided then that it was time to cut my losses now ive found an 8n and am getting ready to put a sherman combo into it

I wish people would quit putting car wires on tractors. It looks rediculous and doesn’t last as long as copper core. My CA was built in 1955 and still has original wires. You don’t dare touch them while it’s running. Yet for the love of god please stop using resistance wires when the plugs are resistant type now a days. Ugh. Lol
