Do you remember when we used to say that you cannot negotiate with jihadi terrorists? What happened to that?! Remember when ISIS were live streaming their be heading of US and UK citizens and we realised that acts of terrorism could never be considered as a bargaining tool for negotiation? A lot of people seem to have either forgotten that or are just incapable of applying the same logic for Israel. Dan Senor, who’s a lsraeIi duel citizen, was one of the main proponents of the invasion of lraq. He convinced the American public to destroy a secular state in order to “end islamic fundamentalism”. This is the irony of western foreign policy, everything they do only empowers lsIamic political movements. They took out Saddam who was secular, they took out Ghadaffi who was secular and they tried to take out Assad who is secular. They prop up these Sunni extremists governments in the gulf and oppose shiaism which is the biggest weapon against the Sunni terrorists.

He really said, all Israel wants is to co-exist.
For a guy who claims to know all about human nature, he seems to turn a blind eye to the corruption in Netanyahu's cohort.
They don't care about the hostages, they wouldn't have indiscriminately bombed and kill their own hostages several times if they actually cared. They just needed a flimsy excuse to bomb Palestinian people so that it can be justified to the world because Israel relies heavily on US support the day the veil is lifted over the american public, that day Israel will lose all military support to wage this expensive war.
The reason Hamas was created was because of Israel's overbearing presence. Note that muslims have had very little qualms with jews for the last 1000 years, even while the European apologist's granddaddies were out there killing them.
The Anti-semitism in the Muslim world has risen in the last century for only one reason, and that reason is Israel's actions. And it only grows because of what Israel keeps doing.

@@misterwallace3479 Your attempt to dismiss a call for more thoughtful discourse with a simplistic reference to COVID doesn't hold water. First, "you people" is a vague generalization that contributes nothing meaningful to the conversation. If you're suggesting that valuing critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning makes someone easily influenced, I'd argue you've missed the point entirely. The aim isn't to follow popular opinions blindly, it's to challenge them using facts and reason.
As for COVID, if you're referring to how public health measures were debated, then yes, it’s an excellent example of why thoughtful, science-based dialogue is essential. Disinformation led to confusion, preventable deaths, and prolonged suffering. Being informed by actual data, instead of viral soundbites, would have saved lives.

@@misterwallace3479 "He's a differential differentiator"? That phrase sounds like it’s trying to be clever but ultimately says nothing. Differentiating is the essence of critical thinking, separating good ideas from bad, facts from fiction, and nuance from oversimplification. If you're using that phrase to mock Harris’s approach, you're only proving the point: careful differentiation is exactly what's needed in a world flooded with simplistic soundbites and half-baked theories.
Sam Harris doesn’t just play on the surface of complex topics, he dives in, examining every angle, which is exactly why his content resonates with those looking for substance. The weird stuff that Sam puts me off with is saying there's effectively no difference anymore between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. To me, it's a wonky take on the situation because "Zionism" is something I both agree and disagree with.
I disagree with what was done to carve out the settlements. But now that a thriving state has been established for a century, I'd prefer it to remain. As an atheist and non-Jew maybe I'm a less biased source to say there's a level of practicality here. Israel is stable, modern, non-draconian, has an educated population, women have rights, technologically advanced, and they're a strong strategic ally. One doesn't need to blush when admitting these things make Israel superior to its neighbors.

@@russellhammond371 The thing where anti-Zionism severely differs from anti-semitism is - to me at least - that Zionism isn't held back by any comittment to a two state solution or agreed upon borders for it. Israel is a state with defined borders by international law. If someones zionism essentially means 'patriotism for that state' I have no problem with that. And I think being against it is at least close to anti-semitism. But if that Zionism leads to expressions we have heard from high government officials in Israel about expanding those borders. Be it the Gaza strip or the West Bank, then standing against that Zionism is simply upholding internationaly recognized treaties.
I really don't make that claim often, but I'm fairly certain Hitchens opinion would at least be close to that.
Regarding your last paragraph I want to make one correction/addition: Israel IS draconian. Just not within Israel. The treatment of palestinians in the west bank is horrible and draconian. The settlement actions there could have been stopped by Israel at any point. Israel chooses not to do that. Contrary to the Gaza Strip the West Bank could also already have a proper functioning government. Israel chooses not to let that happen, because it would mean not being able to colonize the are. It chooses to set up draconian measures there, it chooses to set up a level of segregation there. Historically speaking, judging Israel only by how it treats it's own people does not give the full picture. Israel to me very clearly has two sides. It can be a shining beacon of secular democracy within a region that desperatley needs it, but as much as I wish that that was the only view, one has to consider the West Bank.

The endless refrain that 'war cannot solve Israel's problems' is correct, but skates right by the important truth. War is not sufficient to solve Israel's problems, but it is necessary for Israel to survive to even begin to solve its problems. Israel cannot survive without winning the wars that are thrust upon it. Israel would already be gone if it had lost any of the many wars that have already been thrust upon it. Admonishing Israel that they cannot defeat jihadism with bombs and tanks is a completely unserious point, and one that nobody knows better than Israelis themselves. Nevertheless, without deploying bombs and tanks against their enemies when their enemies attack them, Israel would already be gone, and it would be gone within weeks if it ever stopped resorting to bombs and tanks when necessary. If Israel ever did as its harshest critics wanted and simply declined to respond to violence with violence, and instead responded only with moral condemnation and throwing itself upon the mercy of its enemies, and the international community to join them in condemning its enemies, well its enemies would gleefully proceed with the genocidal massacre they have wanted since at least 1947, and Israel would be wiped out forthwith. The international community has not shown it is particularly serious about protecting Israel's right to exist, or the rights of Israeli Jews to continue to be alive, and I suspect that apart from the US and maybe a handful of others, nobody would lift a finger to save Israel even as it was invaded and destroyed.

If you find that line to be convincing, it can only be due to ignorance of the history of the two state solution. Israel has never wanted the two state solution and they have done everything in their power to block it. The history since 1967, almost sixty years, is clear evidence of not wanting two states. I'm Israeli. Although this piece is pleasant to my Israeli ears, I'm skeptical of the assumption that "if only the Palestinian would've played down their weapons, there would be peace". In the past few years, there has been a growing frustration in the Palestinians' side because the Palestinian issue was off the world's agenda, despite the relative low violence. On the other hand, Israel continued provocations in the west bank and Jerusalem, rejected serious peace talks and avoided even addressing the issue. The Palestinian issue wasn't even mentioned for several elections, and it became a consensus that the "peace process" is dead. In this aspect alone, there was logic in Oct 7. A twisted, satanic logic, but a foreseeing strategic one. It was meant for ending the prosperity and security of Israel, create a public outrage in Arab states to take actions against Israel and in the long run, create a strong coalition against it, and weaken it from within.
The West should have taken a higher price of Israel over its actions in the west bank and the refusal to negotiate a Palestinian state. The message that only diplomacy could bring results, and violence has consequences would've echoed better on both sides. Same goes with Hammas's Gaza and Iran. Gazan's were supposed to envy the success of the moderates in the west bank, but the contrary happened. The west bank was humiliated over and over, whereas the Gazans were perceived as standing up and guarding their honor.

What I find especially disturbing is that many Palestinian civilians support what Hamas did on October 7. The narrative seems to be that the Jews took their land (which they call the "Nakba"), so any amount of violence is justified to get the land back. This narrative emerged again and again in videos I watched of Palestinians being interviewed. When asked where the Jews should go if the land was taken back, they just said that they wanted them gone, back to Europe, back to wherever, but just gone. How about 750000 Palestinian civilians expelled from their homes after 1948??? 300000 of them ended up in Gaza. A core idea of zionism is that Great Israel is a land ONLY for Jews. Far right Israeli government never wanted a two-state solution! Never! Zionists call expulsion of Palestinians "transferring". And they successfully "transfer" them from West Bank. It is ethnic cleansing, Israel became apartheid state. Just listen to what orthodox Jews saying about palestinians: it is pure hatred. And settlement movement is pure evil. Although he was present during a prison uprising that resulted in the death of CIA officer Johnny Spann, there is no evidence linking him directly to Spann's death or to any American killings. I'm Israeli. We don't need to "marginalize" our far right extremists. They're already marginalized. Media just doesn't want to present it to you like that. They will distort and spotlight it as if it's a pervasive phenomena. It's not. These are maybe 5% of the population, and don't represent typical Israelis.

Not all religions or cultures deserve to be respected and treated equally just for the sake of it and October 7 shows that. Tolerance can only go so far when you have a knife to your throat by someone you are told to just respect their difference in perspective and ideas.

“I’ve met anthropologists who are absolutely sure nobody believes in paradise…”
🤔 Do anthropologists have the rare ability to read the minds of others? Why do I care what anthropologists think? Especially today-the humanities departments at most universities today are the MOST whacked by far.
That sort of argument really undermines Sam Harris and makes him hard to take seriously.
