Johnny Rivers has sold tens of millions of records yet the so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has snubbed him for decades now. He is absolutely one of the best from the 1960s. This song is from 1966, when I was in grade three and eight years old. I remember it so well and play it at home fairly often. It is a classic that they will listen to in 100 years and say "Wow! Music was so great back then!" And they'll be right.

@@kathyhayward2228 When they let in rap singers you know the entire governing body are flaky. That and so many others ... like you said, the RRHoF has become somewhat of a joke and really has been for a long time. Too many trendy children running the outfit. I'm glad they finally recognized the Doobie Brothers. It only took like 50 years!

Studio session musicians were very important during this era. Unmistakable sounds and recording studios capturing a unique sound quality. The great bass lines by Joe Osborn, and drum kit lines by Hal Blaine, "The Wrecking Crew". Not to forget the back-up vocals and strings. And of course, Johnny Rivers. Miki, when listening again please take note of Darlene Love and The Blossoms who sing back up on this and several other Johnny Rivers and many other tunes of the 1960's. They sing beautifully alone and may very well be the best female back-up singers ever. Written by Johnny Rivers himself, the recording, arrangement, and verses of this song were all connected together perfectly and became ethereal with the back-up harmonies of these women.

His vocal is very polished with magnificent harmonies from the backup singers. It's also a full orchestral sound which is so absent in today's offerings from overpaid under talented artists. So much polish and harmony, gosh he really is in tune with no electronic gizmos. This sound makes 1966 sound like this unique perfect moment in musical time and space.

Johnny Rivers is still performing and recording. He puts on an incredible show with a voice barely changed over six decades. Bob Dylan called Rivers’ version of Positively 4th Street the finest interpretation of over 25,000 covers of his songs by others. In fact he said he preferred Rivers’ version to his own and couldn’t stop listening to it. It doesn’t get better than that.

Actually, Johnny said that this song wasn't the result of personal experience. Instead he had the rough outline of the song come to him and he played with bits of it over about five months. It was probably cut in L.A. which was recording central at the time and used several members of The Wrecking Crew in the backup band. They were top notch musicians who could be assembled quickly and called into the studio on quick notice practically anytime day or night when studio time opened up unexpectedly. Another clue is that Johnny lived in Beverly Hills at the time.

Very interesting reaction. You lasered in on the song and performance. I think the "classism" you discuss was and may still be a key theme in deep south culture and perhaps particularly the Mississippi Delta. Rivers is from the Louisiana side of the Delta (thus his pronounced blues roots). Decades ago I explored the small towns of the Delta and "the other side of the tracks" phrase came into sharp focus - the distinct class and racial breaks that the railroad tracks facilitated. Abrupt and distinct geographical economic class breaks is a feature of the entire USA, but I think specially prominent in regions such as the rural South and the Delta. However, you get back to the class theme when you listen to the "Jersey Boys" (The Four Seasons) sing about their "Rag Doll".

It was real talent un assisted by technology and computerized tinkering. I saw him live in about 1970 in a small club in Memphis. I sat at a table 20 feet from him. He played and sang with the same quality as the record. He came down after the set and went table to table shaking hands and thanking them for coming.

Your video would be much better if you balanced the recorded music volume and your commentary level.
