This is the first song I ever heard sung by Neil Diamond. I was traveling in a taxi. I was at once captivated both by the voice and lyrics. It was so profound. I never stopped listening to his music since then, many many moons ago! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comments Lola, same here. Here is my story - _This has to be my absolute favourite Neil Diamond song. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._ _"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..." The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). I get all teary hearing this song. What a great talent. Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine. I remember when his wife left him and the divorce settlement was like half his huge fortune, he didn't even fight it. Instead he said she put up with a lot and deserved it. Who does that?? Amen! As a child of the '60s, I grew up to so many great Neil Diamond songs which he had either written for others or those which he performed himself. So much great music of all genres were available wherever you went, either on your little portable, battery powered AM handheld radios or listening to stations on your car radio. TH-cam has proven an amazing renaissance for us but I still hold out hope that the pendulum swings back away from the corporate owned, studio manipulated, recorded songs that performers act as though they're performing at national and international high profile events. Where are today's Neil Diamonds, Carol Kings, Stevie Wonders, and Glen Campbells? I'm confident that with time, self taught and backwoods raised talent will emerge again.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my father. He was more than a fan. The songs many of them told the story of his life. He knew every song and sang them and played them over and over again. This was always one of my favorites as well and I am so happy t have these memories. Thank you!! My dads name was Bruce Newman and he will always be remembered and these songs bring such comfort. I lost my 25 year old son 4 months after my father so 2012 was more than hard for me. These help ease the pain.. 💗🙏🏼🙏🏼

This music helped get me thru an extremely difficult time as a child. Later in life I got to see him in concert, the Beautiful Noise tour. It was a remarkable performance.

_This has to be my absolute favourite Neil Diamond song. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._
_"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..." The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). I was hooked... a fan for life._

I get all teary hearing this song. What a great talent. Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine. I remember when his wife left him and the divorce settlement was like half his huge fortune, he didn't even fight it. Instead he said she put up with a lot and deserved it. Who does that?? Amen! As a child of the '60s, I grew up to so many great Neil Diamond songs which he had either written for others or those which he performed himself. So much great music of all genres were available wherever you went, either on your little portable, battery powered AM handheld radios or listening to stations on your car radio. TH-cam has proven an amazing renaissance for us but I still hold out hope that the pendulum swings back away from the corporate owned, studio manipulated, recorded songs that performers act as though they're performing at national and international high profile events. Where are today's Neil Diamonds, Carol Kings, Stevie Wonders, and Glen Campbells? I'm confident that with time, self taught and backwoods raised talent will emerge again.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my father. He was more than a fan. The songs many of them told the story of his life. He knew every song and sang them and played them over and over again. This was always one of my favorites as well and I am so happy t have these memories. Thank you!! My dads name was Bruce Newman and he will always be remembered and these songs bring such comfort. I lost my 25 year old son 4 months after my father so 2012 was more than hard for me. These help ease the pain.. 💗🙏🏼🙏🏼
