need to react to janis joplin work me lord live video in stockholm "69" you'll be amazed the depth of maybe the greatest rock female voice of all-time !
David Draiman of the group Disturbed, I believe started training to be a cantor, which may explain why his version of the Sounds of Silence is so special
Your commentary's along with your sing-along is so very entertaining, I can't compare it to anything I've seen ever seen. You being beautiful doesn't hurt anything.
Just saw Jay &The Americans last night. They have two original members (one is the guy playing guitar) and they are on only their third “Jay”. They still sound great
To be fair Jay Black is probably the most underrated singer of all time there is a reason this song is not copied at all very very little because it is almost impossible for people to hit these notes and sound that effortless and that Flawless this is truly One of a Kind singing and a master class and a tenor voice
Great reaction as always, Maggie. Great song choice from Mike. I miss these kinds of singers today. Maybe they’re out there, and I just haven’t found them.
Many people say that Jay is singing falsetto He is not singing Paul said oh, he is merely shifting from chest voice into head voice The highest note in this song is a C5 which is way up in the tenor range He can do the lighter configurations others just couldn't do this
@@peterchristopher3527 Correct. His G4 is a beautiful high baritone "money note". The other higher notes are a COMPLETE shift into a very nice falsetto that is not weak or breathy sounding at all.
There were quite a few really good singers in the '60's & early '70's. Another group (one of my favorites) from that era that I would like to see you do is Peter, Paul & Mary.
your musical knowledge continues to impress. I am 67 and have never heard of a counter tenor. I thought that was when I left a 10 dollar bill on the lunch counter. Love your reactions. :) Peace
A counter tenor is revered in the operatic world, but I can't stand them. It's a male who sings in a female voice......what an insult to the male gender.
"Walking in the Rain" was a hit for Jay and the Americans, and one of my favorites! Romantic song with lots of high notes along the same lines as this one.
Very impressed by your immediately pulling the Righteous Brothers (as individual voices) and Elvis, then throwing in Paul Anka, especially since were Jay's contemporaries but they were all before your time!
Maggie I wrote here 3 times in the last 2 years to get you to react to this song OH WELL!! Jay also went to the Julliard . His mom wanted him to sing opera at the Met . Well he sang there singing Rock Yep his mom was there
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.THAT OPERA TRAINING CAME IN VERY NICELY. ROY ORBISON WAS SELF TAUGHT IMAGINE IF ROY HAD OPERA TRAINING. WHO KNOWS. BOTH WONDERFUL SINGERS IN THEIR OWN WAY. MAY THEY R.I.P.
Good job Maggie. What I love about this video (beside everything) is at about 5:24 the backup sing on the far left is visibly blown away by the note that Jay hits. This is a good review especially considering it is from a trained professional. You can't listen to this and not get "the feels". This is a rare moment in all of top-40 music.
Video of Jay performing this song at the age of 76 on TH-cam. There is a reason he is known as THE Voice. He tells a great story about Franki Valli asking him how he was going to sing that note at age 40...
Maggie, there was a PBS music special back around 2010/2011 that showcased a lot of the old singers/groups from the 60's. Jay Black sang Cara Mia on that show and was absolutely amazing. You should watch it as a comparison to the original version. I think you will be impressed.
one of the founding members of Jay and the Americans is Kenny Vance at 80 he's still recording and performing . He has a group called Kenny Vance and the Planotones, their biggest hit is "Looking for an Echo"
I love this!!! Here's another favorite that I don't think anyone has done: Joanne by former Monkee Michael Nesmith. A beautiful, plaintive song he wrote after the Monkees broke up. You''ll be moved. Thanks!!!
Several people have mentioned you should see his performance at age 73. Just go to TH-cam Jay Black caramel 2001 he done a performance and it was so good that PBS brought him back in 2011 and he recorded in their studio ever song he did. At 73 he holds a note for 40 seconds at the beginning of the song. He was known as simply"The Voice"Barbie music industry and his peers. I think he was the best lead male vocalist of the entire rock and roll ERA.
I saw the current line-up of Jay & the Americans last week in Daytona Beach, one of the groups on the Happy Together Tour. Cowsills, Vogues, Association - all those groups can still sing !
The best story about this is Mick Jagger on Ed Sullivan. They sang Let's spend the night together, he sang it live. They wanted him to say Let's spend some time together. When he sang it the camera was focused on his face and turned to it and sang it right. They immediately changed the picture and The Stones were pereonna non grata on tv for a long time.
In this performance on Shidig, he was singing live, but this video has the studio version over his live vocals. You should listen to this performance live.
They do that a lot to the old teen shows on the internet or youtube, as if we should all be ashamed of live TV then and how it was...I say BS to that. You don't learn anything about the history of live TV or how great these artists really were live.
Yeah, Jay and Friends sang a nice song... but the Hit is This video is the 60s fashions and clothes!! The geometric patterned short dresses on the dancers! The "Nice Guy" look of the Americans with their slacks, v-neck sweaters and (probably) turtleneck "dickies" which just went on like a little saddle with your head in the middle!! Loved it... oh, and the reaction of course!!!
Maggie, here is a great catalog of Jay Black And The American songs for you and your commenters. You'll love all of these: 1) Let's Lock The Door 2) Come A Little Bit Closer 3) Walking In The Rain 4) This Magic Moment 5) Only In America 6) Sunday And Me 7) Living Above Your Head 8) Some Enchanted Evening 9) Hang Around 10) Run To My Loving Arms 11) She Cried 12) When It's All Over 13) Something In My Eye. Enjoy!
During this era, there was this 'competition' between Jay Black and Frankie Valli. Both had huge followings. They were totally different types of singers, but they both 'played up the rivalry' for sales. Jay was by far the smoother, more polished singer.
You should do the live performance of Jay doing walking in the rain on the Mike Douglas show. Everything he sings is great, Come a little bit closer, let's lock the door and throw away the key, only in America and the list goes on and on and on....
If you van ever see watch a pns muscial special 40 years after this performance......older and bibgger but his voice was the same! High notes and length of holding them was fantastic!! And i know of one other fantastic singer who was a trained ,Canter like his great grandfather! Lead singer for Disturbed....David!

Alip ba ta ft. Dimas Senopati - Another Day (Dream Theater)
Elvis Presley version of "O Sole Mio" re-lyricked into "It's Now or Never."
Sing us a song and show us your range.
"Jay" sang this and his other songs until he was in his 70's, without missing a note. He pereformed until 2017 and passed in 2021 at 82.
He still sang and didn’t miss a note after having throat cancer
He was 25 when he recorded this classic
Jay was a trained opera singer. His mom had him take lessons. But he wanted to be a popular singer. So you have nice mix of both in his performances.
Jay's training was in Cantorial School.
If memory serves, Jay's father was a Kanter at Temple and he was trained for that position. Try Come A Little Bit Closer.
David Draiman of the group Disturbed, I believe started training to be a cantor, which may explain why his version of the Sounds of Silence is so special
One of my favorites.
Cantor.
Your commentary's along with your sing-along is so very entertaining, I can't compare it to anything I've seen ever seen. You being beautiful doesn't hurt anything.
He is similar do Roy Orbison also. There is a reaction by Winged Pegasus where Jay is 62. Still has it & gets a stand ovation. RIP Jay Black
Just saw Jay &The Americans last night. They have two original members (one is the guy playing guitar) and they are on only their third “Jay”. They still sound great
I knew that nobody could sing like Jay Black, but the new Jay did a respectful job.
@@HALWG51Yes.
Jay Black does this in the 50s revivals and in his 70s still crushes it. What a talent.
We took all this music for granted and never dreamed how absolutely special it really was.
Thanks! This is why they called him The Voice. Loved your reaction and analysis.
Glad you enjoyed! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! 😊👍🎶💖🥳🐶
“This Magic Moment” was their best song.
released in 1968/69.
Original version the Drifters 1960.
Only in America too
Haha I remember buying this 45 when it came out in '65 and I wore it out!
To be fair Jay Black is probably the most underrated singer of all time there is a reason this song is not copied at all very very little because it is almost impossible for people to hit these notes and sound that effortless and that Flawless this is truly One of a Kind singing and a master class and a tenor voice
Agree.
Great reaction as always, Maggie. Great song choice from Mike. I miss these kinds of singers today. Maybe they’re out there, and I just haven’t found them.
Many people say that Jay is singing falsetto He is not singing Paul said oh, he is merely shifting from chest voice into head voice The highest note in this song is a C5 which is way up in the tenor range He can do the lighter configurations others just couldn't do this
The highest chest note is only a "G", after that it is pure falsetto
@@peterchristopher3527 Correct. His G4 is a beautiful high baritone "money note". The other higher notes are a COMPLETE shift into a very nice falsetto that is not weak or breathy sounding at all.
You need to listen to him sing this when he was 72...no difference.
Agreed he nails this song as an old man too
I like their version of Walking in the Rain.
Right. So amazing!
There were quite a few really good singers in the '60's & early '70's. Another group (one of my favorites) from that era that I would like to see you do is Peter, Paul & Mary.
Maggie has reacted to Peter Paul and Mary a number of times on Twitch live streams.
your musical knowledge continues to impress. I am 67 and have never heard of a counter tenor. I thought that was when I left a 10 dollar bill on the lunch counter. Love your reactions. :) Peace
GOOD ONE : ))
That made me laugh out loud! So glad you’re enjoying my reactions!!
Haha! You made me laugh SO much! If you have heard of The Righteous Brothers, Bobby Hatfield, blond guy, was a Counter Tenor!
A counter tenor is revered in the operatic world, but I can't stand them. It's a male who sings in a female voice......what an insult to the male gender.
Jay was not a counter tenor; rather he used falsetto / head tones.

Roy Orbison clone! OH, and yes, he's fabulously talented!! Love to hear him do "This Magic Moment", huge hit for them and only a cover.
Orbison was self taught. Incredible range, great vibrato.

another classic 60's song, thanks!
I like Jay and the Americans but my favorite song from them is their cover of "Some Enchanted Evening" from "South Pacific"!
Video of Jay performing this song at the age of 76 on TH-cam. There is a reason he is known as THE Voice. He tells a great story about Franki Valli asking him how he was going to sing that note at age 40...
I've always loved this song! Thanks for the breakdown, I learned something today. You should also try Come a Little Bit Closer! It's a fun song!
good reaction as always...:)
Check out his This Magic Moment and Walking in the Rain.

"Searching for an echo" is one of my favorite songs. But I think Ol 55 did it better.
I love this!!! Here's another favorite that I don't think anyone has done: Joanne by former Monkee Michael Nesmith. A beautiful, plaintive song he wrote after the Monkees broke up. You''ll be moved. Thanks!!!
Back when music was real, pure talent.
Excellent choice - there aren't many reactions to Jay and the Americans.

Actually. Mitch isn't singing falsetto, He is a counter tenor.
❤️😍I love Jay and the American
I saw him at Cedar Point , Ohio. I think it was 1964 or 65 ❤️
Apt comparisons, but throw Roy Orbison in there as well.
Especially with the quaveriness in his vibrato.
There is a video of him doing this 50 years later, it is Great!
GREAT song I always loved! Superb voice!
RIP Jay.....one of the best !
Come a Little Bit Closer is great too.
🎉 Just a suggestion: If you like this era of music with a little falsetto, try on some Bobby Vinton, “Mr. Lonely” (1964) and “Blue Velvet” (1963).
Find the 2011 video of him doing this in his 70s -- his voice got even better, like a fine wine or a well-built guitar.
The slight slide of the voice from the high notes down to the lower ones is called "glissando."
Now that is a high note!! Good on you sir!
Beautiful complexion and perfect makeup!
How many number one albums have you had?
Haven’t quite had time to put out my music yet lol… been busy getting three degrees from Juilliard 😉
Really enjoyed your review. Have watched it many times. Your reactions and manorisms are awesome!

Damn ! He got a great voice.
You’re a classically trained singer, and you have no clue who these people were. He had been one of the best voices you had ever heard.
You should do the live performance of Jay doing walking in the rain on the Mike Douglas show. Everything he sings is great, Come a little bit closer, let's lock the door and throw away the key, only in America and the list goes on and on and on....

Check out that great micr. technique, too....lots of space between his mouth and the micr. So many of today's singers can't even grasp that concept.
The Greatest music ever in my
I would love to hear using this song. I think you could do a really beautiful job with this song!
In my youth I discovered Jay and the Americans. I would sing-along, could actually reach some of the high notes. Sadly, no longer! Jay will be missed.
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Hit after falsetto hit.
He actually got better in his 60's and 70's.
Amen Amen Amen
Have you listened to the Four Seasons. Frankie Vallie has a very good falsetto. Also Mitch with Pentatonix.
Jay was born David Blatt. Brooklyn.
Jay Black was classically trained.
Brilliant
Not Elvis, but Roy Orbison.
Jay Black Could've been An opera Singer 8:00
The Shindogs the shows studio band. It's guitar player James Burton was lead for Bob Luman Rick Elvis ect.
👍
The music I grew up.
You should do Steve'n Seagulls cover of "Thunderstruck"
Linda Ronstadt La Cigarra!!
Jay's a much better singer than Paul Anka!
Inspirational for Tiny Tim.😊
You remind me of Maria Callas.
If she were alive today.
“Subscribe” from Texas.
AND Jay was hitting those notes, almost until his death. His replacement is pretty close as well, but not quite as powerful. Saw them in Myrtle Beach, SC.
👍❤️
Ain't Beach Boys ,but damn.
Jay Black rivals "The Voice" of Rock n Roll history... Roy Orbinson.
For you doo-wop fans, Kenny Vance is second from the left side in this video.
April love
Haven't seen a new Maggie a new in a while hope you are well lets post a new one !
Jay definitely had a better falsetto voice than Lou Christie. More operatic. Like Roy Orbison.
Pavoratti could sing this one.
Would have been interesting had Roy Orbison attempted this one.🕶
Do Hushabye by Jay Black [David Blatt] if you can sometime.
Nobody can touch jim on this.
