I have a mix bullmastiff with a border collie. He is huge weighting already 100 lbs at ten months old. I love him. He possesses most features that you talk about. Stubborn, big, gentle, protector, sloppy and he thinks that he's a small dog without realizing how heavy he really is.
I had a bull mastive as a teen, at the time I played club rugby and the bull mastive will literally wrap his paws around your legs at speed and do a perfect rugby tackle, never had it been trained, pure instinct.

Good episode. I adopted a Shepard Mastiff several months back after she showed up at the farm. Very intelligent breed. She's a great companion and watch dog.
Our female bull mastiff Amber is 9 now and is still very playful. Amber as a pup was the same light colour as the young female in this video but as an adult she is a dark golden red colour so its something to note that they do darken quite a lot as they age. She is exceptionally strong and very determined when she focuses in on something. Something they like to do is watch, they arent very reactionary dogs. They like to evaluate the situation before acting. Constant early socialising and basic training as with all dogs is a must but especially so with something as powerful as a bull mastiff
We have loved this breed since 1980 when we got our first one.❤ We’ve had many over the years and are now ready for another one. Our last rescue passed one year ago. The house feels so empty!
My dad had a bullmastiff some time ago. He was very friendly with people, but hated other dogs. He was also an excellent guard dog, in that he knew when to be a guard dog, and when to just be a dog. It wasn't trained into him, he just....... knew. Its a stark comparison to his current dog, a blue heeler that doesn't know how to turn guard dog mode off.
Thanks Anneka, what makes the Bull mastiff a very special guard dog is its good nature, man stopping ability and compared to the other very popular guard dogs, the Bull mastiff does not need a lot of exercise to keep fit.
@simonjeakings4470 the difference being, with bullmastiffs, they realistically shouldn't be exercising too much. Moderation is key. They can and will over do it, and it's not good for them. They need a good walk each day yeah, but not going with you for a jog of an evening.
One of my best friends has a bull mastiff and he is about the funniest most awkward dog I have ever met. She actually has a basket with disposable towels folded up in it right by the front door when you walk in. So you can pretty much predict what is going to happen to you lol let the slobber train begin!
We are on our third Bullmastiff now big brindle male, great for a young family as are gentle giants, wouldn't have any other breed, until I am too old to walk one
Beautiful breed. I kmhave one in my neighborhood and see him every other day at the nearby park. A friendly boy he is but with people he knows otherwise he just keeps aloof. But sadly as you have said their lifespan is a bit short which breaks my heart. Just imagine such a cute stubborn boy and he will leave you after just 8 years... Just makes me sad.
My Bull Mastiff is a killer! When he is playing, his bulk and need for affection by hugging you , could result in being knocked down and sat on- definitely a killer. And when he is sleeping near you, it is possible to trip over him and again you may die when you hit the floor. Their “bum bumping” , where they use their rear end to bump you in play is actually very funny but all that weight and muscle mass is very effective and could easily knock you over if you are not prepared Great fun personality dogs and naturally very inquisitive to their surroundings and great guard dogs
I love the Mastiff breed! My first memory of them goes back to when I was 14 or 15 years old. I was in a Dutch bordertown, in a store that looked like it was entirely carved out of wood. Everything was very old and solid looking. As I leaned over the counter and spoke to the shopkeeper I felt something vibrate against my left leg. A French Mastiff - the biggest dog I had ever seen - leaned its head peacefully against my leg and made a big satisfied sound of a sigh (not a growl or bark). I could feel it everywhere, it was so solid. And then I realized there was another one on my other side. I didn't hear them come into the store and I don't think they were there before. Gentle giants. I was so impressed by them, I asked the shopkeeper about them and learned they were French Mastiffs. I thought they were overgrown Boxers, but I knew then and now they are very different to most dogs I've encountered. Their natural state seems to be extremely calm.
Yep. I personally grew up with bullmastiffs. They are great dogs to have around kids at least based on my experience. They are members of the nanny group and they are usually very friendly around strangers unless they give off bad vibes. In fact according to my dad our first bullmastiff was not the best guard dog. One time my parents (this was before I was born) found her showing off her belly to a workman. My second bullmastiff never was around kids before she was adopted by my parents but as soon as she saw me she licked my feet and apparently I giggled (I was a baby at the time). Mom was forced to admit she could stay. And our third bullmastiff was super gentle and a real chicken. She actually tried to befriend deer and would try to get shrews to play with her plus she wasn’t the best at standing up for herself. A Jack Russell terrier intimidated her one time on a walk so when we got her a sibling (a German Shorthair Pointer) she relied on her sister to protect her.
Thanks heaps Anneka. Beautiful dogs. Walking 4 at a time is most impressive. She’s clearly put in a lot of work with them since young. Because if they want to go they can. Supernatural strength.
I’ve had three Bullmastiffs. Given a reasonable amount of socialization the are affectionate and will guard with the best. They love being inside dogs and are easy to train to stay in your yard. None of my three needed a fence to stay close to the house. Mine all had a lazy tendency and didn’t like long walks like Hiking two or three miles at a time. My last male would sit inside in the kitchen by the glass door to watch down the drive. He would alert anytime a car came down. They train well and all three got basic obedience training, one was also a finished confirmation champion. Hard to go wrong with this breed as long as cleanup doesn’t bother you.
We raise them and I concur. In the last 20 years we’ve only had one real runner that liked bike rides. One actually would try to lay down and go on strike. A walk around the yard is enough for them.
Love everything you do Anneka, Sadly I just lost my favorite Rottie, she was 13 & 1/2 years old so she lived a long life. Love her and you, but really miss her. She was my BF.
We have our 2nd bullmastiff female, our 1st Bo was so great that we got another when Bo passed away, but the difference between them is night and day, Bo was very laid back, and typically quiet unless something was wrong, our present one is completely different gobby and highly strung, any cat, human, dog, or bird within 25 steps of us gets whimpered at as she wants fuss from everyone!! Which is great she's friendly, but a shame when some don't want to say hi to her because of her size, yes they're stubborn training is harder than training a Labrador, but the guarding instinct needs no training, other than when its acceptable or not, exercise doesn't have to be hours long, but i believe they need some every day otherwise they'll let you know!! Both have been great with our cats, and children despite not being around them regularly, slobber isn't too bad usually its worse in heat or after exercise, both of our females have been sensitive to the demand "now" if all else fails "now" works immediately!! Being female I've held the lead, i do the feeding from puppy stage to show I'm leader, but its amazing how they know the difference in people, my hubby has had a tshirt torn off his back in play on the floor, me i get some play but mostly kisses and cuddles, I've taken ours puppies to a nursing home my work, to socialise them to different people, and they've been amazing with the immobile elderly residents, be strong for the times they pull on the lead as I've ended up at physio before with an injured shoulder from being pulled, mostly as both of mine have been nervous of large vehicles, busy road walks mine haven't liked, they're happier in fields or forests,, i love their wrinkled heads when they're interested, i love how mine helps me off the floor with my arthritis aches now, but in the next minute she's burst through patio doors to get to me to protect me!! A brilliant breed if only they could live longer than most do.
What beautiful breed! These dogs are very strong and big but they are also gentle giants! Anneka thank you very much for sharing this very interesting video! Very compliments to you!👍👍👍👏👏👏🥰🔥
My dad has one, her name is Freida, and she is the most gentle, well behaved dog ive ever met! She never EVER barks, is a HUGE cuddler and loves attention, and she doesnt slobber at all unless shes getting a treat!! She loves adults, kids and other dogs, but is a but protective of her food towards other dogs.
My bullmastiff was such a wonderful girl but she was nicknamed "the dog that ate America". She ate everything as a puppy, but sweet and such a great family dog.
Had big Earl - a beautiful Bullmastiff American Bulldog X - sweetest doggo ever. Absolutely ruled by our 12 lb shelter Shih Tzu. The only thing he hated were blimps that were over the Hollywood Hills where we lived. They made him livid. Miss him so. Congestive heart failure. The big ones just don't live long enough. Angel pups. Be good to them all, please
We share our home with one. This vid is a very accurate description of our guy. I love him dearly. The smartest dog I have ever known. That slobber though.....urgh !
Couple decades ago I stayed with a friend in the E Village ( NYC) for ten days while my new apartment was finished. I slept on the sofa. First morning at 6:00AM his bullmastiff was breathing on my face. Message was clear. Let's go for a walk. I suggested we wait awhile ( after 7:30A) He wasn't having it. 😁 Each early AM while I was there he was ready to walk.. When I ask his owner if they went out early, "Absolutely not" was his emphatic reply.." He knows you are an easy sell because you two like each other."😁 I loved being around that dog. Woof-Woof!
Lovely video...if you think the Bullmastiff has a bid head wait till you see a Dogue De Bordeaux's head! Its even bigger and wider. Would be nice if we can get a video of the French Mastiff next. Also Brindle bullmastiff is my fav collar on them.
@@coveyssteve it can be difficult for those that don’t know the breeds well to distinguish between a bullmastiff and a black faced Dogue de Bordeaux. They both have a touch of English mastiff in them. Only the shape of the head is different.
@@runedahl1477Yea i lived in a house with a bordoux years ago and I've owned a bullmastiff for the last 3 years . Agree very similar in temperament and nature
I've played with 2 bull mastiffs and recently played with a boerboel and both breeds are something to see in person but so much love and gentleness. Plus a 6 month old 80lb Presa that was so sweet. Yet I own a chihuahua. Lol
We have had bull mastiffs for over 20 years sadly we are not young enough to care for them when they are unwell all of our were above 60kg and the largest was our last girl at 83kg. We miss them all
Beautiful friendly loyal dogs, I had 4. I now have a terrier, the opposite, hyper, aggressive, loud! My female bullmastuffs all died around 5 yrs old with heart problems
I’ve turned that fear into a life lesson to enjoy what I have when I have it. Never know when this ride ends and I’d have zero regrets I chose bullmastiffs for the trip. Hands down the best breed on the 🌍 yes I’m biased lol. On my 2nd
We have had them for 30 years now. The best way to handle training and short life spans is to have a pack. We have four lazy.babies. Our oldest female trains the younger dogs very well. Enjoy the journey and the slobber;)
Love the Mastiff breeds. I have my heart set on the Cane Corso 💞💞💞 Ameka please keep up the excellent work and beautiful content. Checking in from St Louis Missouri USA.
I adopted a Bull Mastiff from the local pound and named him Thor. But he was such a softie couch potato, I also named him Thoreau. And he had the most expressive eyes.
That's true. Unfortunately the fanciers of this breed moved toward the show ring and bred the working traits out of them...sadly. Maybe someone will reintroduce some new outcrosses and recreate the working line Bullmastiff. These ones are definitely on the plus size and probably have a high % of English Mastiff blood...another working breed destroyed. Not sure how affective they would be going after armed poachers. Mind you I haven't watched the full video yet lol 😆
@@f.mazz.459 Modern bullmastiffs are sweet couch potatoes. Perfect for people who want intimidating dogs that won't harm anybody. A boerboel is not just a bullmastiff with a longer muzzle but much more aggressive. The ones I knew were quite dangerous.
Any time breeders breed for the show ring they eventually lose the dogs natural ability of what they where bred for. People will breed for looks instead of performance. I will take a dog from working stock over the show ring any day.
I'm used to handling big breed dogs, Malamute, German shephard, Rothweiler, Dobermans etc. And maybe 6 months ago I met a new neighbor and he has a bullmastiff. Large male. And the dog loves me. Don't know why cause I smell of cat. Last week I rang his doorbell. Hey I haven't seen you in a while, how are you doing? And his bullmastiff heard my voice and started showing me his favorite things. First a bone, nice bone and he walked back in. And talking with the owner. And the dog got his stuffed toy donkey he loves, to show to me. Nice donkey. And back in the house and back with a bunny stuffed toy he wanted to show me. And he leaning into my legs like trying to show affection. 60kg of dog and massive head like a football and not like he's known me for a long time. Refused to listen to his owner to come back inside the house. Nope. I got a new friend now, I going with him. No sorry my cat will not like you. They are such gentle dogs but a bit stubborn yes. ❤
I've got a bullmastiff and he is the most adorable lovely baby I have ever met. I don't walk him because he is too strong and wants to pick a fight with other dogs or animals he encounters, but my brother does and he completely obeys him. He is super gentle with kids and with my grandma. I recommend them as a loyal family and guard dog, you only need to be strict and strong when you walk them.
Great video! We have had two and fostered one. Bully's are absolutely as described here. Love people, can be obedient but aren't afraid to push back either; it's part of their charm...:). Ours only drooled when eating, begging for food, drinking or when they were lathered up. I do believe you have to be a little stubborn and very consistent with this breed. As I have always joked, if you let them get away with it once, they take the attitude of "That's they way we have always done it Dad!". They can also be a little sensitive and when they don't get their way they are masters of the pout! You cannot give in to that though. Our two were both sadly diagnosed with cancer in the month of their seventh birthday. Different breeders and bloodlines, same result. That seventh years seems to be a pitfall for them. If you can get them beyond that, you might have them for a couple more years. We currently have a Bassett Hound but I hope to some day go back a larger, mastiff family breed. They are exceptional companions!
I had one when I was 3. He was so sweet. His name was Roco and he never bit anyone, we went to a few shows with him. Sadly he passed away when I was just 4 due to a Cancer lump on his back. I was super depressed when he passed away. Rip Roco
Our last bullmastiff lived to 13. Careful breed selection, feed and not too much exercise will extend their life in my experience. The bigger the dog the less life expectancy. They bark maybe once at someone visiting the home. I don’t agree that bullmastiff’s will let someone in but not out. I have owned many Bullmastiff dogs and they will nearly always sleep either in the owner’s bedroom or on the stairs/landing to protect them. They will never let an intruder get to the owner. Btw no woman should try to walk 2 Bullmastiff dogs let alone 4 because just 1 could overpower her and do what it wants.
I like this breed but I would choose a South African mastiff because they can do longer walks and they are a healthier breed and have a longer life expectency but the are still a beautiful dog
our brindle mastiff rosie was nothing short of a big old lump of affection.. passed away at 13 yrs old, great age for a mastiff, and still miss her .. not once wasshe ever aggresive or anything but gentle, even with kittens and other dogs.. if anything small dogs scared the crap out of her.. :-)
I have owned this breed for over 23 years and a baby mouse has more chance of hurting you they are gentle and misunderstood my first one was afraid of going out at night and the wind I have had 3 children grow up and they are the perfect breed around kids loving and tolerant if you have an aggressive bullmastiff you have made it that way trust me I have over 23 years experience
I had two. The first was a male, great with my kids. As far as health was concerned, let’s just say I was on a first name basis with my vet - constant ear infections, then blew out his knee and finally hemolytic anemia. Larry prescribed two cancer medications for the later, neither did anything and the dog had to be put down at six years old. Bad luck I guess. #2 was a female who lived till 8 years, sadly she died of liver cancer. Both dogs were affectionate and great guard dogs. My only complaint about the breed, outside the health issues I experienced, was bit of stubbornness in training. That’s on me.
Can you do more videos on more rare mastiff breeds? Such as Tosa Inu, Fila brasileiro, Dogue de Bordeaux, Spanish mastiff, Bandogge, etc? I really love your videos on dogs...they are my favourite type on TH-cam please keep making them! Have a great day
FYI I have been around at least three bull mastiffs and seven French mastiffs with my young child and I can assure you I would never put my child at risk. There are other large breed dogs that I did not and would not allow my child near, but there are some others I would. I'm sure you can figure out which breeds those are. There are several "gentle giants" that have never harmed children. The first dog we adopted was a golden retreiver and the second was and English bulldog. These are two of the most loving friendly breeds you could.possibly have.
I'm fortunate that my Lucy doesn't drool. She gets a little wet on the jowls, but doesn't seem to ever drip. Thankfully. Best breed of dog I've ever had. Cute and cuddly and SUPER protective of the home and yard.

Best dog. Biggest friend. Loyal Protector. Saliva Distributor.
Absolutely . Best Friend , Big spiritual Buddy's 🙏
😅😅😅 yep had 1 myself
1 of my best friends
Great dog😊😊😊
Thanks Anneka, what makes the Bull mastiff a very special guard dog is its good nature, man stopping ability and compared to the other very popular guard dogs, the Bull mastiff does not need a lot of exercise to keep fit.
"Does not need a lot of exercise to keep fit." That is the quote from every lazy dog owner.
I love this. Saddleworth Moor is just near me. I take my live stock guardian dogs there often xxx
Been waiting for the bullmastiff for a long time. Boxer video next would be class
My Bull Mastiff is a killer!
When he is playing, his bulk and need for affection by hugging you , could result in being knocked down and sat on- definitely a killer.
And when he is sleeping near you, it is possible to trip over him and again you may die when you hit the floor.
Their “bum bumping” , where they use their rear end to bump you in play is actually very funny but all that weight and muscle mass is very effective and could easily knock you over if you are not prepared
Great fun personality dogs and naturally very inquisitive to their surroundings and great guard dogs
Mastiffs are the ultimate dog.
Supernatural strength.
beautiful? hmmm
@@jeffk464 Well, beauty is objective. However, I’d guess you like gold chains, track suits, and gold toilets if you don’t think this dog is beautiful.
@@ryanmalone2681Nah, maybe they're just not into excessive slobber. It's not everyone's thing to have spit everywhere 🤷♀️
We have a 14 year old with a little Ridgeback in him. Still going strong, very protective and very loving.
Ayo fellow Ridgeback owner!! Mine turns 13 in a few weeks lol.
I love mastiffs! ❤ They look like the Tosa I use too own. Miss her soo! Love the videos
Love everything you do Anneka, Sadly I just lost my favorite Rottie, she was 13 & 1/2 years old so she lived a long life. Love her and you, but really miss her. She was my BF.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Very compliments to you!👍👍👍👏👏👏🥰🔥
I bought one here in Ireland 6mths ago after 5 rotties,,a presa and a mali. Got to say hes most close needy dog ever had and most alert to respond
I like bull mastiffs They're a beautiful and magnificent breed of dog
Had big Earl - a beautiful Bullmastiff American Bulldog X - sweetest doggo ever. Absolutely ruled by our 12 lb shelter Shih Tzu.
The only thing he hated were blimps that were over the Hollywood Hills where we lived. They made him livid.
Miss him so. Congestive heart failure. The big ones just don't live long enough. Angel pups. Be good to them all, please
I had 3 growing up, my dad had them also. Such funny, loving, amazing dogs. I still miss them all.
We share our home with one. This vid is a very accurate description of our guy.
I love him dearly.
The smartest dog I have ever known.
That slobber though.....urgh !
They look scary but most of them are sweethearts!!!😊
Fergus, rehomed to us when friends immigrated. Brindle, and such a gentle giant, best friend to Yster, our Jack Russell.
Got a Dogue De Bordeaux and they are very much like the bull mastiffs both in size and temperament. Great dogs.😊
You are in error relative to the comparison of the breeds.
He's a good boy. A mate of mine had a mastiff and he was a good boy too.
Best dog's ever, so docile until they need to protect you.
I've played with 2 bull mastiffs and recently played with a boerboel and both breeds are something to see in person but so much love and gentleness. Plus a 6 month old 80lb Presa that was so sweet. Yet I own a chihuahua. Lol
Presas and dogo Argentinos are imo, the best dog's for guard work.
Beautiful dogs they live short lives couldn't go through breaking my heart that often
I’ve turned that fear into a life lesson to enjoy what I have when I have it. Never know when this ride ends and I’d have zero regrets I chose bullmastiffs for the trip. Hands down the best breed on the 🌍 yes I’m biased lol. On my 2nd
Just rescued my second, the two best dogs ever. Sits at my wife’s side whenever she answers the door. It just came naturally.
We have had them for 30 years now. The best way to handle training and short life spans is to have a pack. We have four lazy.babies. Our oldest female trains the younger dogs very well. Enjoy the journey and the slobber;)
ive been waiting for you to do a video on bullmastiffs ,ive owned them for the last 30 years a perfect breed, but needs experienced owners
Love the Mastiff breeds. I have my heart set on the Cane Corso 💞💞💞
Ameka please keep up the excellent work and beautiful content. Checking in from St Louis Missouri USA.
Would love to see a video on the dogue de bordeaux 🐶
Me too!
I adopted a Bull Mastiff from the local pound and named him Thor.
But he was such a softie couch potato, I also named him Thoreau.
And he had the most expressive eyes.
Most aggression has been bred out of them, they are definitely not like Boerboels
Indeed, but the old bullmastiff was used to creat the boerboel
That's true. Unfortunately the fanciers of this breed moved toward the show ring and bred the working traits out of them...sadly. Maybe someone will reintroduce some new outcrosses and recreate the working line Bullmastiff. These ones are definitely on the plus size and probably have a high % of English Mastiff blood...another working breed destroyed. Not sure how affective they would be going after armed poachers. Mind you I haven't watched the full video yet lol 😆
@@CiroMastinotrue
I have an English bullmastiff in years one years old and I've had him for about 8 to 9 months and I love him❤❤
2:20 Dog on the right is looking out at the landscape like 'this is much more interesting.' 😂
Absolutely awesome breed of dog!
I had one when I was 3. He was so sweet. His name was Roco and he never bit anyone, we went to a few shows with him. Sadly he passed away when I was just 4 due to a Cancer lump on his back. I was super depressed when he passed away. Rip Roco
😢
Love my boy Bo. Excellent temperament and very loving.
Love the show. I have an XL American Bully so the bull episodes were some of my favorites of course
I have one she’s 6months old. Going through the teething phase. Playful but not aggressive. Scared of Chihuahuas lol 😂
Big strong dogs .I've just got an American bulldog x mastiff. Love your videos anneka
I've never met one bull mastiff that was human aggressive
I had one and he did hate one person.
There is sure a lot of animals with big teeth in your vids! But I love them all! Love your style, Compassion & Love for all of them!
Just a better all round dog they have a much higher level of intelligence
"I will never leave a big dog with a child".. A good dog ownee
I loved my boys… Bailey and Oliver, such lovable beasts
our brindle mastiff rosie was nothing short of a big old lump of affection.. passed away at 13 yrs old, great age for a mastiff, and still miss her .. not once wasshe ever aggresive or anything but gentle, even with kittens and other dogs.. if anything small dogs scared the crap out of her.. :-)
I like Bull mastiffs they're beautiful and magnificent breed of dog
Been waiting all day for this! :)
Such beautiful dogs. I used to work at Petsmart and big dogs were always friendly, It was the small dogs I was concerned about.
Those are some giant pugs
I have 6 month old Bullmastiff/ Australian Shepherd mix. He's the sweetest doofus 74 pound pup.
Have a great day
Tosa's and Filas are extremely rare outside of their home countries unfortunately. I understand why the Fila is banned but not the Tosa though.
My buddy has 2 bullmastiff. They are loveable drooling machines when they know you.
Beautiful animals, I had the great privilege of owning one but he passed away and I miss him every second of the day😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Just by looking at them, they are simply a very powerful 4-legged specimen breed. Denmark "The Brolhomer" next show, of dog.
The dog isn't in the country.
LOVE THIS VIDEO I’m watching it with my 5 month old bullmastiff puppy, Ammo
Beautiful and mighty dogs.
Ooooo!!!! Wow!!!! Great video mam👍👍❤️
They are such beautiful beasts.
1:57 Now those r some damn good looking Bullmastiff’s right there!!! ❤
I myself am a proud owner of a “Red” BM. He’s 13months old and roughly 155lbs. He eats us out of house and home and gives us the amount of affection of 10dogs! 😂😊😊😊❤ Best pup ever!!!
We have had 7 bullmastiff and a dozen fosters never a mean one in the bunch. Have a 150lb male now big baby.
