I'm South-African and boerboels are a favorite dog for us but not everyone wants boerboels, personal experience I have for the past 16 years is they are unpredictable and weren't easy to predict. We have family with a 3 year old female who grew up with smaller dogs around her, one would think they take them as family but no they have a high pray drive or maybe it's just their girl, she's almost killed 3 of the other 5 dogs and was extremely aggressive towards strangers and only now after almost 4 years she's calming down

    • @winifredeverett9939
      @winifredeverett9939 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

My boerboel was a rescue dog so she probably wasn't trained and already 3 years when we got her. She's highly intelligent and extremely protective. She can be unpredictable and aggressive towards strangers and it's taken about 4 years for her to calm down. So it hasn't been easy but she looks after us and we look after her

I grew up in South Africa and have owned both breeds, the Bull Mastiffs were very very soft and goofy in the house or garden with family and friends (Except the one time when the pair I had decided to do some "Detailing" work to 3 cars that belonged to visitors that came around for a Braai (BBQ) they took all the beading and the bumpers off all 3 cars), but ferocious when on our property and in guard mode, out walking they were just generally their usual goofy selves, the Boerboels were soft at home when around the family but very stand offish and grumpy around other people, also ferocious guard dogs on the property but also when on a walk, they wanted to fight anything that barked at them from a yard we were walking past...both breeds though were fantastic family dogs but definitely not for first time dog owners...

One thing to add... bullmastiffs themselves made a huge contribution to the Boerboel breed. Hope you study and end get to know the kind of dog (more than just a few videos) The Boerboel is not APBT... Very Far from it. They are the opposite in many ways., Pitt's are normally human friendly, where Boerboels are naturally suspicious. VERY important you make your Boerboel feel safe and under leadership. Where a Pitt can be dangerous, it is peanuts compared to a Boerboel. These are serious dogs, and they can easily make decisions for themselves. My advise is to get a Boerboel if you have a big property it can roam and guard, and can accept that it will be suspicious to strangers, and it can take a long time before it is friendly. If that is not what you can offer the dog, the Bullmastiff is a better choice.

@21st Century Viking that's exactly what I'm expecting out for my next dog. I don't want strangers around my property, and that is why a Boerboel appeals to me. Of course, I'm going to socialize and fine-tune them. We're moving in the next few years to a sizable estate where an estate dog can do their thing. Also, I'm aware that apbt and Boerboels are not the same thing. That's why I'm looking into a different breed because apbt isn't cutting it. Apbt is too friendly with strangers. I need a more aloof dog. You're passionate about the breed, i can see that. Thanks for your insight.

I've owned bullmastiffs and fostered both. Boerboel bonds very fast and are more protective. They also are a little shorter and usually have their tails cropped. They are always working, observant, and looking for threats. Bullmastiffs have been more wary of change, slower to adjust to change and will alert strangers and protect if necessary but usually see people as friends first.

Ive had several of these amazing dogs over the years, you are 110% right about the Boerboel being protective of its family, Once they bond with the family (Around 6 months old) they become so overprotective that they will die to protect your family. My Dog Zeus died attacking a huge Mamba snake to protect my 6 year old son, he passed with the snake still in his mouth, he refused to it go regardless of being bitten several times. The best advice i would give is to have a firm hand with your puppy from small, it needs to know who the boss is at home (By that I dont mean hit your dog!!!) they are very intelligent and understand tone, so use your voice. After about 4 to 6 months they know what they should be doing and you can start to relax. To avoid joint issues from too many long walks and runs, we added "Rough House" on the grass outside intermittently, this way they get plenty of exercise and absolutely love it, while saving those joints :)

Mine were Bullmastiff x Mastiff. They were incredibly intelligent, easy to train and as they were raised with cats, rabbits, poultry and other birds from the very beginning, they accepted these creatures as part of their "family". It was also very easy to teach them not to chase other animals: as long as we remained calm, they saw nothing to fuss about. We were even able to teach them to leave all snakes alone, so though we often had these reptiles in the garden (we live in South Africa and prefer rural areas), none of the dogs were ever bitten. They were so tolerant that, when they lay out in the sunshine, lizards would clamber up onto them, migrate to their heads and wage war on any insects that landed on the dogs.
We could leave them in the aviaries for extended periods of time, which was sometimes necessary as we had a general dealer shop and I sometimes needed V to come and help me. She would shut whichever dogs were with her in with the birds and when she returned, the dog(s) would be asleep with birds strutting around and on them.
Our pack normally consisted of about ten to twelve individuals, all of which were focussed on protecting "mommy", my wife. They did not protect me: as leader of the pack, it was my job to attend to any threats, but if I was not around, they acted as Veronica's entourage. This is not to say that they would not come to my aid, but they waited for a cue, either from V or myself. I taught them to watch my hands and could control them with simple, seemingly innocent gestures.
We NEVER used collars or chains: they responded immediately to our voices, so that these restraints were unnecessary. Other dog owners, even trainers, could not believe how obedient our dogs were.
They generally lived for between ten and twelve years and some made it to fifteen.
We had none of the injuries you speak of and only two (of around 30) developed cancer. One went down with demodectic mange, but we soon had it under control and eventually the mites just disappeared.
Two of our training videos appear here: th-cam.com/video/c0NhE1CpXtE/w-d-xo.html and here: th-cam.com/video/A69Cwophzgk/w-d-xo.html.
Best wishes and keep up the good work.

We had a boerboel X bull mastiff cross we I was a kid. He was so massive and so beautiful. So gentle and loving. But still looked far to impressive for anyone to come with bad intentions. I wish I could show you all the pic. He was something unique. As an adult my baby boerboel just died at 13. I am so broken and miss her so much. I was so blessed she was super healthy until her final week.

Both breeds are very cool! Friends of mine own Tank, who is a two yr old BM and he's awesome. Just met a six mos old BM, Crosby...very laid back for a young pup. But there's a Boerboel micro breedery a half hour from my house and I was there back in April, right in the beginning of the covid-19. Amazing, I'll be getting one. I've had three English Mastiff's and can't wait for my South African Boerboel puppy!

I have a male boerboel (10 months 140lbs) and he is awesome. Not for a novice dog owner. Boerboels are dogs turned up to 11. He is strong, energetic, loyal, protective, extremely intelligent and a big snuggle bear…with us. This breed are not labs. My boy is not “friendly”. He isn’t unfriendly, he just doesn’t like to be messed with by anyone outside his family. Won’t bit or anything. But he will let everyone know when he no longer feels like being touched. For some reason people feel ok just walking up and touching him. It’s the craziest damn thing I’ve ever seen. We are already seeing his protective nature manifest and he seems to do it instinctually. We just have to make sure we never put him in a situation where he feels he has to actually do some protecting. I’ve never seen a dog stare with such intensity and intelligence. It can be a bit disconcerting at first. Also, he’s built like a brick shithouse. Just a tank. Short and thick and more athletic than something his size has any right to be! Wonderful dog. Just the best.

boerboel is far from the serious business agro only dog portrayed. They can be super fun even at advanced ages like 9 to 10 years old. Boerboels are great dogs when they are well bred and raised. Unfortunately the boerboel has been bred indiscriminately lately (talking silly colours like white and patches wtf!) And stupid bodies lacking strength and brain. The boerboel is red, brown or fawn , brindle with or without a mask. A white diamond on the chest or white toes can be acceptable. Boerboels don't like strangers. They only like their family and animals they raised with. Keep puppies lean and exercise carefully. Feed small amounts more often to prevent bloat. Love them

I don't know why but he is afraid of everyone, hes been like this since we first got him. He sticks to me like velcro and he doesn't really realize his true size. He romps around like he's a small puppy. He is 139lbs so far and is always wanting attention. He does calm down and like you said gets a little lazy after a while.

Hi MoNo K, to completely rule out food allergy, if possible, try feeding only raw meat for several weeks (no processed anything, including treats). If his skin clears up, you have a starting point. Some less obvious allergies include: household cleaning products, (particularly floor and carpet cleaners), laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach, and/or dryer sheets, also, any scented sprays, plug ins, etc. One of my dogs had a terrible allergy to lawn products. Toys can be a sneaky culprit (rubber, plastic, rawhide, etc.). Also, medications can cause skin issues. I hope your doggo gets better! I know it is a very frustrating problem. Would love to see an update!

I've owned Great Danes, most of my life and later I had a 70% Cane Corso/25% Bullmastiff for 10 years! He was an absolutely amazing dog, super-intelligent, loving and an unsurpassed guard dog! He was, over the years, in conflict with various breeds and NEVER came close to losing in ANY battle he ever engaged in! He had engagements with Irish Wolfhounds, pit bulls, German Shepards, Giant Schnauzers, Rottweilers and Rhodesian Ridgebacks!. He quickly and easily defeated all opponents to my surprise but didn't seriously harm ANY in all battles he had. He has since passed away but I bought a Boerboel female and was quickly amazed at how COMPLETELY she fulfilled this role! She's larger, more muscular, super intelligent and heavier than my male, but has a lesser jaw strength and protective instinct. Nonetheless, I would trust my life and my family's life with her protective instincts. SCARY! Potential aggressors, BEWARE! WOW!

I have a female Boerboel and a male Corso, and the seriousness with which she guards is something I always have to be mindful of. He will let you know he is there, but she will seriously hurt someone or thing that has ill intentions. They love and they love deeply. You hit that nail on the head.. socialized constantly as a puppy, and it definitely did not translate into adulthood. And I'm so cool with that.
