An American icon. He deserved an Oscar for "The Quiet Man". Don't often hear an actor thank movie goers for our support of the movie industry.

Well my father and I both liked him very much. I wasn't commenting on his morals or character, just his acting ability and heavy work ethic. Drunk or not I felt his acting improved greatly over the decades. I've been addicted to things and cheated and been cheated on. I never said he was a Christ like figure, just that I felt he deserved the standing ovation for his exceptionally productive career. I am wondering what the hell he may have done to you to elicit such a pained response...I've never ever been a fan of war/killing/forcing our beliefs on others in the world either. If he had refused to go to war in the recent past he would likely be touted as a peace activist. Everything is relative.

As a 44 year old American I can assure you that the majority of people here in 1971 were most definitely NOT white supremacists. There was a huge civil rights movement in the US in the 1960’s that led to sweeping changes in antiquated anti-black laws especially in southern states where black people were segregated to the point they weren’t allowed to stay in the se hotels as whites, eat at the same restaurants, use the same bathrooms or even the same drinking fountains. Eventually, he made the decision to sign up to be a recruiter and press photographer on the front lines because people would follow him anywhere. An OSS commander even approved his application, but the response was sent to the home of his estranged wife who didn't tell him about it. If something had happened to him, she would have had to raise their four kids by herself. It's a matter of public record...private record too with his grandchildren having some of those letters.

He was beloved by practically everyone he ever met, including those who assumed they would hate him because of their wildly opposite political and societal viewpoints. The man was a consummate professional and was incredibly gracious to everyone. And this 70-second speech exemplifies all that I've come to know and appreciate about the man. He was infinitely humble and outwardly focused, realizing that his success has as much to do about others as it does about his own efforts. Oh, that not only Hollywood, but the entire world, had more John Waynes in it today.

John Wayne is forgotten by most people, and hated by those who remember him because he was a self-described "white supremacist" who starred in racist films that glorified genocide.

Mannnnnn the actors in that category alone - Peter O'Toole, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Richard Burton. All time greats.

What a superstar he was. Over 300 movies made. He deserved that Oscar but I think his best performance was in "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" and "The Shootist". The Quiet Man was also great as well as Big Jake, Hondo, Stagecoach, McQ and North To Alaska. So many wonderful films. I remember the day he died just like I remember the day Elvis died. He is not the greatest actor ever but he is without question the greatest movie star ever! The closest thing he has to competition there is Harrison Ford who ironically gets routinely snubbed.

I couldn't agree more. I passed my love of John Wayne to my daughter. Her favorite movie is North to Alaska.

Whether you agreed with his politics or not, John Wayne was one of the greatest stars in the history of movies. He had a presence and a charisma that was unmatched. A true legend that deserves his status as an American icon.

Lynn Turman I didn't agree with John Wayne's politics, but I recognise that his political opinions were sincere and we shouldn't be either too cynical or too trusting. I do fully agree that Wayne was a genuine movie legend, with real charisma, charm, humour and who put in many fine performances and too many professional performances to count. His best films are just as rewarding to watch today as when they were made.

+Lynn Turman Even Maoist Jean-Luc Godard has acknowledged Wayne's acting genius - such as, Godard has offered, exemplified in the Searchers scene where he picks up Nathalie Wood off onto the horse.

It happened over 50 years ago - and brought tears to my eyes. I was watching it that night but it hardly had the same impact on my as it does now. I was 14 back then. I watched them every year for forty or more years - but haven't turned them on in several years now. Say no to Hollywood liberalism.
