Charlie didnt want to initially come back to the US to accept the Oscar as he feared the reception towards him would be negative. It was his wife Oona, who convinced him to accept this honour. He was fearful that people would have forgotten him after all the years away from the screen and that his return to the US would be greeted with hostility. You only have to watch this video to see how humble and emotional he was by the audience's reaction to him. Charlie Chaplin was a genius and a true legend.
Chaplin thanked everyone in his speech and said, “Oh, thank you so much. This is an emotional moment for me, and words seem so futile, so feeble. I can only say thank you for the honor of inviting me here. And you’re wonderful, sweet people. Thank you.”

Fun fact: Charlie Chaplin got the longest standing ovation in history for this award! 12 whole minutes! Edit: this is referring to Oscar history, there seems to be some confusion
What a humble legend. The humanity that Chaplin brought to all his films is what makes them so transcendent. More filmmakers today should take a page out of his book.
The longest standing ovation in Oscars history. The ovation went on for over 12 minutes for Mr Chaplin what an absolute incredible actor/writer/musician/composer/producer/director. There are no words for the bet ever actor in the history of movie making. He did it all without speaking which is incredible.
charlie chaplin wrote, directed, edited and produced all his films and co-founded united artists with mary pickford, douglas fairbanks and d w griffith. his worldwide persona, the tramp, was admire by many. charlie is beyond one of the greatest actors of all time. charlie’s humour made everyone laugh, and the media and the world tore him apart, accusing him of being a communist. like michael jackson (sorry for bringing another celebrity here) would say, the media and tabloids are terrible who loves tearing people apart.
You say that as if he had the option to utter a single word. The entire industry was silent, you dolt. Every single silent comedy film star such as Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton made people laugh without "uttering a single word". That would be like saying "Mozart created the greatest art without making a single movie"
In my personal opinion, this award came much to late in his life, he deserved so much more from Hollywood, he literally paved the way, for the people applauding him!!
I just read his Wikipedia article and you’ll be happy to know that at the first academy awards ceremony in 1929 he received a “special award” for “versatility and genius”!
I'm a Buster Keaton fan. I think for comedy/gags, Keaton was better. Chaplin pushed things farther into pathos and managed to move more successfully into the talking era. They both were masters of their crafts (comedy/filmmaking) and I wouldn't kick either of them off my screen, but it's a matter of taste, and I prefer Stone Face flavor over Little Tramp.
He thought they were going to boo him. He did not expect the 'new' stars at the time to stand up and applaud him. He did not know that his movies were still loved.
I love the pure and sincere humility he has on his face. The fact that he doesn't accept the fact the he is the very embodiment of cinema makes him all the more great.
In 1914, people laughed when watching his films. 107 years later, people still laugh when watching his films. This man has went to hell and back and yet, he never failed to make us laugh. We all went through hell, but there are always some things put us up and one of those things are laughter. Thank you Sir Charles Chaplin for everything. RIP my good sir.
Charlie Chaplin was a pioneer who inspired the hundreds who came after him. Master of cinema long before the "talkies" and the greatest comic actor of all time. He was the champion of the underdogs on screen.

His season highlight came on September 6, 1995, when Ripken surpased Lou Gehrig's 56-year-old record for consecutive games played (2,130 games). The crowd in the stands, the opposing players and all four umpires gave Ripken a standing ovation lasting more than 22 minutes, one of the longest standing ovations for any athlete. During the ovation, Ripken did a lap around the entire Camden Yards warning track to shake hands and give high-fives to the fans.

The fact that he only ever revived an honorary Oscar gives hope to all film makers today, espetially comedic, that don't have the best reputation with critics. I honestly think that of modern comedic film makers the one most likely to be remembered as the Chaplin of our era is Seth Rogen. If you're a film geek you'll probably disagree whole heartedly, but terms of modern comedic cinema, he parallels Chaplin.
Abby Phillips uhh no... first you have to understand that mr chaplin was given a special honorary award by the academy for "the circus" it preceded the "honorary oscar" in 72' by 40+ years. rather then take all 4 categories for best actor/director/writer/comedy picture, the academy removed him from the running and distinguised him as in a category all his own. "for versatility and genius in acting/writing/directing/producing" say that word again..."genius" sinkin in yet? the achievement of "the circus" in the annals of films at that time was inimitable and deserving of more prestige than his competition could compete with. likewise, the special honorary award in 29' is paramount to the honorary oscar 72' chaplin still received an accolade from the academy for a singular piece of work and a dubious oscar ONE year after the honorary in 1972 for his score in limelight. count 2 oscars. an honorary in 1972 and one in 73' for music plus the special honorary award given for the circus in 29'. "the circus" special award acknowledgement by the academy that ultimately surpassed his competiton was a validation of his genius and work. lets not forget it also was the very 1st academy awards. writer/director/actor/producer... things like this are rare for filmmakers and award ceremonies. not to mention it was unheard of at that time to receive multiple category nominations. and no, seth rogen compared to the master that was chaplin diminishes the wonderment/charm/mastery that that man was. you dont have to be a "film geek" and pass on more diminishment with that callous approach to this artform. the comparitive diminishment of one of the founding fathers of cinema by saying rogen parallels anything that man accomplished is laughable at best, and unmeritable at least. let me know when rogen composes/directs/produces/acts/writes his pictures and does it per film. every film. reinvents vaudeville to do stage work and has a silent film body of work in the mid 70's. starts a collaborative film company. all of this and add 50+ years in the industry, then... maybe... rogen can be held in the same breathe that was this man. you effectively compared a master to an apprentice. and p.s. the closest comparison to a "chaplin of our era" is woody allen. mr allen has "eras" under his belt. eras! aaaaand last but certainly not least, critics have NO say who wins the oscar. its peers who do the voting and "reputation with critics" means absolutely nothing. this isnt some golden globes foreign press voting structure. its peers. NOT critics/press/media who do the voting. TL:DR 1. chaplin has 3 awards from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. 3! 2. rogen has yet to be proven as anything nearing chaplins genius. 3. "reputation with critics" means less than nothing concerning the academy awards or the AMPAS voting structure, let alone the honorary awards they bestow. its peers who cast the votes. know your history or youll be doomed to repeat it.

I had the honor of attending these 44th awarding of the Oscars--what a night it was. Something that occurred at this special presentation of Chaplin's honorary award that isn't shown in this video was, just after the gentleman finished introducing Chaplin onstage, Chaplin appeared from the wings on stage left (your right as you're looking). He was then serenaded by Johnny Mathis singing, "Smile" as he walked toward center stage. The audience erupted and stood on its feet….the ovation lasted twelve minutes (to this day, the longest in Oscar history) as Johnny sang the lyrics and, as I looked around, so many people were in tears, as was I. It truly was a magical evening and this video helped to bring back so many memories of that night. By the way, Chaplin's appearing at this Oscars presentation was his first visit to the United States in over 20 years! He was overwhelmed by the reception he received. While I don't agree with his political views, I do recognize him as being one of the major pinnacles in the history of film making. He was brilliant at it.

@@titusho2 Communism is evil. It is demonic to its core. Socialism, when allowed, always leads to Communism. While I admire Chaplin's filmmaking skills and talent, I abhored his political beliefs. Communism is diametrically opposed to the Judeo-Christian foundation upon which our nation, the United States, was founded. When Krushchev, after taking office after Stalin's death, revealed the atrocities to the world all that Stalin had propogated and involved himself in. Krushchev, too, participated in the horrific atrocities in the former USSR -- in fact, more deaths occurred under Stalin than did Hitler. Nevertheless, these revelations failed to have any affect upon Chaplin and, hopefully, have his views changed. Instead, when he left the USA to go live in Switzerland, he was living off royalties from his films made in the USA --- and he remained pro-Soviet to his death. What did the USSR do, in return, to show their "gratitude" to Chaplin? They opened a Chaplin museum in Moscow, and during Chaplin's paternity suit with Joan Berry, the Soviets launched a Chaplin festival and blamed all his troubles on the Trotskyites and the William Randolph Heart press. Chaplin and all the rest involved in the blacklist -- deserved to be blacklisted. They allowed themselves to be duped by Communist infiltration into Hollywood that began in the 1930's and continued right in to the '40's. They did it through "front groups" posing as humanitarian aid groups, what have you, that were led by registered Communists. Chaplin was involved with these groups, as were many others such as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, James Cagney, Edward G Robinson, Lillian Hellman who later became a screen writer...hordes of back lot, stage workers, etc., were duped into this mess. But, Chaplin (and Lillian Hellman, among many) continued right along and supported whole heartedly the Soviet cause and control of America. Hollywood was one of the plum areas the Soviets sought control and influence in order to achieve their goals. Thankfully, they failed. By the mid 1950's, much of the Communist influence in Hollywood had come to a close. Today, however, it's rearing its ugly head again through the co-opting of liberals and progressives to their side, easily deluding them to believing that a socialist state is the ideal, utopian state. WHAT...A...LIE!!!
" You're wonderful, sweet people. " A giant among giants! It's difficult for people to understand how a person could deserve a 12 minute standing ovation. Just watch his films and you will know what a remarkable man he was to the world. ( There is a famous photo of Chaplin addressing a huge crowd in New York, 1918. He was adored! )
He also got the ovation because it was his first return to America since he was told he would never be allowed to return because Hoover and McCarthy and evil people like Hedda Hopper, did what those jerks did in that era; lie about people being Communist and trying to take over the country.

One must understand Charlie's life when watching this video! Betrayed by a country he loved, he was kicked out of the country. After thirty years, the US finally opened its doors back to him, and offered him this honorary award. If we go back farther, we can see his hopes and dreams as a young child enslaved to an orphanage. His mother in an asylum, his father an alcoholic. Charlie, against all the odds, rose up to become one of the Greats. I can't help but see Charlie's entire life swelling up in the form of tears... He did swell
“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.”- Charlie Chaplin. This quote was from the greatest comedian. I can definitely relate the reason behind this saying.
You sure he loved America? This is a quote from him about the US:- Whether I re-entered that unhappy country or not was of little consequence to me. I would like to have told them that the sooner I was rid of that hate-beleaguered atmosphere the better, that I was fed up of America's insults and moral pomposity ... Don’t think he thought that highly of America dude. The US might have treated him better if he wasn’t English, which of course he was.
@@Theoriginalsparkythemagicpiano The context of the quote you gave came after a very vicious smear campaign from the US media and government, as well as the fact they had just cancelled his visa and made threats against his attempt at re-entry. Is he not entitled to a little bitterness about that?
You can't deny the contribution this man made to early cinema and comedy in general, nor the fact he has influenced generations of talented comedians for over 90 years.
+Ryan Douglas yes you can deny it. without studio promotion he would have been nowhere. he also failed after the silent era so there goes the talent right? comedians since him have been far funnier.
It isn't impossible. Those talented comedians have not done work influenced by Chaplin and you can't even see the same styles. Charlie was a silent film actor. That is it. Movies were big in the 20s and having a unique look helped. Actual acting came about later and he failed at it. Anyone can do silent movies. You need a catchy name and look.
@@henrybrown596 I searched on Google and this is the part of a paragraph, "And there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Jack Lemmon gave him his famous Little Tramp hat and cane." My question was in regards to the anchor, who gave such a polished speech. You are also right as JL did present him, but only the hat and the stick and not the Oscar. Such a man was CC, that he just saw the Oscar and proceeded to give his thanksgiving speech and immediately took the hat and the stick and did his trademark action of making the hat flip. That was simply superb. I am from India 🇮🇳 , hence don't know so much of Hollywood. You may correct me if I am wrong. Love from an Indian 🇮🇳.
I saw this Oscar Show as a teenager. I wish TH-cam or somebody had the entire clip. The stars laughing and crying at the great Chaplin footage shown. Ending with The Little Tramp holding a picture of a star, kicking it away, and walking away from the camera. As if, being a star doesn't last, and I think that hit home to many stars in the audience. Also the fact that if not for the early days of Chaplin, the stars at The Oscars might never have had a career. They stood and applauded 10 or 15 minutes, Oh, I wish you could see the entire thing. It brought tears to my eyes, still does. And my Dad who was no Liberal saying, " Of all the people that should have been kicked out of the USA and weren't, why him ".....Of course J Edgar Hoover had died....The greatest Oscar moment ever was Charlie Chaplin returning to USA after decades, to be Honored, and Honored he was, and this short clip doesn't capture the tears and love from all the stars for Chaplin on this night. For it was Chaplin who was at the beginning, and they owed their success later to him. The love and emotion in the room will never, can never be duplicated.....I suggest on TH-cam watching end of City Lights as the girl who was blind is laughing at the Tramp, but feeling his hand remembers him, and it was the Tramp who was her friend when blind and got the money for her operation, and the words for the girl, " Yes, Now I can See "....Or The Tramp rescuing the crying child being taken away....He amazes you with Comedy, but he amazes you with Drama....and on Music, the end of Modern Times, his song SMILE....and Petula Clark had a hit 1960's song with a Charlie Chaplin song, " This Is My Song ", with his words very fitting, " I care not what the world may say. Without your love there is no day "......It is fitting that after the decades, Chaplin was brought back to have his day after a shameful part of the 1950's blacklist era.
I searched this comment section (not the whole thing - it is way too long, I just searched for a moment) to see if anyone else besides you had mentioned that he was blacklisted. Nope!
Most well deserved standing ovation in history. Even in 2018, I can't think of a more important/influential actor in terms of advancing cinema/entertaining the world and keeping people from tearing each other's throats out. I mean, this man kept people entertained and motivated in some of the most difficult times in post 20th century history. And I'm seeing in the comments that this ovation actually lasted 12 full minutes?! That makes me smile, I only wish it was longer, but that would probably embarrass Charlie who is one of the most humble people ever, and already seemed totally overwhelmed by the love shown!
What a sight to see an experienced old star. He is all but humble; that has made him reach this height. I shed tears when he was given his hat and stick. Something which is his identity forever. The man to enact a clown on cinema and completely entertain public just by body language. I am sure his soul is in a good place resting. Love you Chaplin! Peace!
And it boils my blood to think of what is now considered to be a huge miscarriage of justice in that paternity case he had to go through which when he left for a European visit resulted in those slimy bastards making him a persona non grata and banning him from returning to the U.S.. I salute the Hollywood community for bringing him back and giving him the honour and recognition he so richly deserved.
Evil Harb It is always unfortunate that most of great human beings are recognized only after their death and their works much more later. Atleast in the case of Chaplin he got an award while he still lived.

Charlie didnt want to initially come back to the US to accept the Oscar as he feared the reception towards him would be negative. It was his wife Oona, who convinced him to accept this honour.
Abby Phillips Birdman won best Picture tho, so did Annie Hall and It Happened One Night.
The Oscars like comedies too.
Nati Artioli You're so hot that you've just melted my heart.
Abby Phillips
uhh no...
first you have to understand that mr chaplin was given a special honorary award by the academy for "the circus"
it preceded the "honorary oscar" in 72' by 40+ years.
rather then take all 4 categories for best actor/director/writer/comedy picture, the academy removed him from the running and distinguised him as in a category all his own.
"for versatility and genius in acting/writing/directing/producing"
say that word again..."genius"
sinkin in yet?
the achievement of "the circus" in the annals of films at that time was inimitable and deserving of more prestige than his competition could compete with.
likewise, the special honorary award in 29' is paramount to the honorary oscar 72'
chaplin still received an accolade from the academy for a singular piece of work and a dubious oscar ONE year after the honorary in 1972 for his score in limelight.
count 2 oscars. an honorary in 1972 and one in 73' for music plus the special honorary award given for the circus in 29'.
"the circus" special award acknowledgement by the academy that ultimately surpassed his competiton was a validation of his genius and work.
lets not forget it also was the very 1st academy awards.
writer/director/actor/producer...
things like this are rare for filmmakers and award ceremonies.
not to mention it was unheard of at that time to receive multiple category nominations.
and no, seth rogen compared to the master that was chaplin diminishes the wonderment/charm/mastery that that man was.
you dont have to be a "film geek" and pass on more diminishment with that callous approach to this artform.
the comparitive diminishment of one of the founding fathers of cinema by saying rogen parallels anything that man accomplished is laughable at best, and unmeritable at least.
let me know when rogen composes/directs/produces/acts/writes his pictures and does it per film. every film.
reinvents vaudeville to do stage work and has a silent film body of work in the mid 70's.
starts a collaborative film company.
all of this and add 50+ years in the industry, then... maybe... rogen can be held in the same breathe that was this man.
you effectively compared a master to an apprentice.
and p.s. the closest comparison to a "chaplin of our era" is woody allen.
mr allen has "eras" under his belt. eras!
aaaaand last but certainly not least,
critics have NO say who wins the oscar.
its peers who do the voting and "reputation with critics" means absolutely nothing.
this isnt some golden globes foreign press voting structure.
its peers.
NOT critics/press/media who do the voting.
TL:DR
1. chaplin has 3 awards from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. 3!
2. rogen has yet to be proven as anything nearing chaplins genius.
3. "reputation with critics" means less than nothing concerning the academy awards or the AMPAS voting structure, let alone the honorary awards they bestow.
its peers who cast the votes.

He was adored! )
Not hard for anyone with even a tiny knowledge of film/theater history.
He also got the ovation because it was his first return to America since he was told he would never be allowed to return because Hoover and McCarthy and evil people like Hedda Hopper, did what those jerks did in that era; lie about people being Communist and trying to take over the country.

Samu Rai Chaplin was banned from the U.S. for being a “whining red commie”. The only time he was allowed back was for this Oscars event.
CHARLIE CHAPLIN was a LEGEND
CHARLIE CHAPLIN is a LEGEND
CHARLIE CHAPLIN will be a LEGEND
FOREVER
And NO ONE can take his place.
HIS contribution is unbeatable.
SALUTE TO YOU SIR !

Mr bean ?!
Sahi dassa aa
Millan Dhillon strongly agree
And I watched it in 1972...great then and now!
♥️
How old was you then ?
Wow!! Did you ever imagine that you would see this again in future I mean on TH-cam kind of platform??
It just shows how far humanity and good will, decency has fallen , from simple beginnings to the very end a well spoken and honourable gentleman
@arthur wiebe Have you seen his profile picture? He looks like a grandmaster, I wouldn't say he is lying.
+Naren Pillai So can I . So can I... 🌹🌹
One of the greatest Brit comedians in history for sure.
You sure he loved America? This is a quote from him about the US:-
Whether I re-entered that unhappy country or not was of little consequence to me.
What a sweet moment for an icon. There will be many talented artists but never another Chaplin.
You can't deny the contribution this man made to early cinema and comedy in general, nor the fact he has influenced generations of talented comedians for over 90 years.
others made a bigger impact yet were not promoted like this immoral idiot
+Coco Pops this seems like an odd hill to die on
I'm not a man. Nor is my comment idiotic and disgusting. Others did make a bigger impact and had more talent
Also respect to a guy who presented the award , he has so balanced words and speech to make that occasion more beautiful..
You are 100% right. His words, "We respectfully disagree......". Simply superb. Can anyone inform the anchor's name ?
Who is he please?
@@ndaulinendaulina5715 I checked on the Google and his name is, Richard Chamberlain, who was also a famous actor.
I'm pretty sure that's Jack Lemmon
@@henrybrown596 I searched on Google and this is the part of a paragraph, "And there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Jack Lemmon gave him his famous Little Tramp hat and cane."
My question was in regards to the anchor, who gave such a polished speech.
After believing for decades that America hated him, he looks genuinely overwhelmed at his reception.
He probably was, having returned to the USA after being forced to exile for more than 20 years...
@@alejandrovidal6441 By a paranoid FBI, not Americans who appreciated his artistry.
I am pretty sure it was the government not the people
@@alejandrovidal6441 Not exile, he was English not American.
@@vio3366 You’d be surprised how many stupid people still live in this country.
He never needed an Oscar his work spoke for its self.
Even though he rarely spoke.
@@Ashraff12 That's his true genius he said so little but so much at the same time.
Agreed!
But then eggy people says "He deserved one award at least, the Academy is too unfair". Hipocrecy.
@@BenjaTaker33 Never worry about what people try to say, just enjoy a brilliant mans films for what they are.
Peace!
***** Thank you! Chaplin sir has turned me happy from sad at various occasions and I think this comment is nothing when compared to his works.
Thanks, Naren, for actually reflecting how I also felt watching this. Tears in the eyes time.
Mark Andresen No mention sir.
Evil Harb
It is always unfortunate that most of great human beings are recognized only after their death and their works much more later. Atleast in the case of Chaplin he got an award while he still lived.
What a great speech. It's definitely a reminder of a different time and era. We're kindness and happiness mattered.
The world needs him, in these difficult times. More than ever.🎭
@@bepositive6737 Yes
3000 years from now, Chaplin will still be in our vocabulary.
In 3000 years we will probably be communicating by multi hued bubbles blown out of our ass or something. There will prob be special coloured bubbles just for Chaplin 👍
He will always be.
Like Shakespeare.
He is one of the most important figures in the history of cinema.

Edit: after protests i am correcting this comment. Charlie Chaplin HAD the longest applauses time at the Oscars. In my personal opinion he deserved every second
Its the biggest
Kevine Araujo 12 minutes. There is no unedited version to be found. Also between the speech and his appearance a show reel of his greatest moments was shown which left everyone in tears.

Sir Charlie Chaplin was a gift for the world..
Such a gentle and funny soul who is dearly missed by all.
It was cut out in this video, but he received 12 minutes of standing ovations.

We need an award more than an Oscar.
The award should be named
