    That lan line telephone is old.. Just wait tell you call 911 on your cellphoje and voip and the emergency response is led to the house next door instead of yours. The "old" phone will get your location the instant you call

    If I have a telephone jack in my room, and it has Cat 5E cable, could I just put in an Ethernet keystone and use it as an ethernet jack without interrupting the home phone lines?

      +New American Fishkeeper yes you can, as long as that cable on the other end is patched into a switch or router.

    Really good friendly video with great advise. Minor issue with the excess untwisted wires on the keystone and the connector. Interesting RJ-45 with the wire separator. Good Stuff. Thanks for the great video, I highly recommend it.

    "Here's how I set up my home wired network"
    "The house already had ethernet cables all over the place"
    "The end"
    What a pointless video. How are you supposed to do it if you don't already have wired ethernet in your house like 99% of all homes

    Keystones were done poorly. You want to maintain the outer jacket as far up to the jack as possible to reduce long term strain. Also, each colored pair needs to maintain it's twisting as far up to the punch down points because the twists allow the lines magnetically cancel each other which reduced interference.

    My home is set to be ready for move-in on 12/5, I ran 850ft of cat 6 and couple hundred feet of rg6 for cable tv before they put up the walls. Today my wallplates, keystones, tools, 24 port gigabit switch and cat 6 patch panel arrived. Gonna be fun punching every thing down and making it look nice-tight.

    • @Emtrthree
      @Emtrthree 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cat 6 is a bit overkill considering you're using a gbe switch. Cat 5E would have been more cost effective.

    • @slowfaller
      @slowfaller 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thomas Sawden Thanks for the reply, I had the $$ to get cat6 so that's what I got, it's been installed since about October '14

    • @nos676
      @nos676 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Sawden Cat 5e and Cat 6 cost the same.
      Cat 6 can be used for 10GbE later if he upgrades the patch panel and switch.

    "In a perfect world we would use a punch down block..." No. No, you would not. You wouldn't let a punch down block anywhere near your gigabit network. In a perfect world you would punch them down into a patch panel, but not a punch down block. That's for telephone.

    I have cat5e cables in my house for the phone, but I only have one wire coming into the house. but in some of the phone kestones have 2 or 3 cat5e cables. how do I go about changing them over for my network

    • @dd92727
      @dd92727 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Kelly Phone uses one pair of cat5 usually blue and blue white and they are tied to the red and green line coming from the pole. In your house there should be a place where all the cables are. Normaly close to where the electric power comes through the house in the basement there should be a panel you can open up for access to cat5 and coax.

    13:53 Ideally, the cable sheath should come right up to the back of the Keystone, and each pair should continue to twist together as far as possible. This is even more important, if not critical, when using Cat 6.

    4:30 seems to be an indication about how much does he really know about networking. Using a switch is completely irrelevant to the termination of the cables (patch panel or direct RJ45 jacks). You can't choose not to use a switch. This is not analog... The termination in that socket is a disaster.

    I've also done a few dozen of those keystone punch downs. I think B seems to be popular... not sure why! But when I was doing them for a company, we had about 4 of them per wall plate, and about 8 plates. I did them B, and was told B. I don't know why that seems to be the most popular. :/ Those are fun though!

    Boiler? you mean the water heater?

    • @suj1945
      @suj1945 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think you mean boiler, mate. "Water heater" is what a child would call it.

    • @drumguy1384
      @drumguy1384 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Suj, not exactly brother. Boiler refers to a machine that actually boils water in a steam heat radiator system. No modern systems actually use a boiler, but the term is still used to describe machines that heat water for heating radiators. Hot water heaters are used specifically to heat water for use in sinks and showers, not radiators.
      As to your suggestion that that "is what a child would call it"; since real boilers rarely exist anymore and most of what people call "boilers" actually heat water rather than boil it ... maybe the child would be more correct.

      the hard part really is just wiring the plugs and you don't actually have to do a specific order like he did w/ the blue pairs and the orange pairs as long as you have the plugs wired identical on both sides it works it is kind of tedious tho...i once paid a guy a six pack to make cables for me cuz i just didn't wanna lol :D

  • @Castiel1849
    @Castiel1849 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My issue with the video is he didn't wire anything and also how much wire is exposed with the keystone. He also inserted wires 1-by-1 into the load bar whereas he could have done them all at the same time by clipping them in a straight line with the wires already in order. Along with so many other things lol. I do not recommend this video other than for sh*ts and giggles.

    Guys just want to give you additional info, a modular plug is also called an rj45 plug and the keystone is also called a cat 5/5e/6 (etc.)jack. When purchasing these componets please make sure you get the same specified as your cable or higher, so if you had a cat 5 ethernet cable get a cat 5 rj45 and cat 5 jack or higher than that which would be 5e or 6. If you get a lower rating such as cat 3 you will experience seriously slow data rate speeds if you have an 80mbps down/up speed because cat 3 only supports 10mbps.

    I like to use the EZRJ45 plugs. As you get older I have to use my reading glasses plus on of those head mounted magnifier to make sure all the wires go into the plastic guides in the EZRJ45.
    After you make up both ends you have to get your little tester, plug the transmitter on one end and the receiver on the other and PRAY that all the lights flash in sequence.
    If they don't you have to re-do both ends.
    It's quite an experience.

    Category 5 cable can handle gigabit speeds. You should keep your pairs untwisted as much as possible when terminating. To be teaching how to terminate you should do it properly.

  • @DJAlup
    @DJAlup 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I flippin hate those stupid "Modular" connectors. they are a pain in the ass. You should of just got some good quality Cat6 RJ45 connectors. The eaisest to use are the ones that the wire goes clean trough it. IF you do get those make sure to get a crimper that cuts the wires at the same time as crimping.

  • @jasonb2112
    @jasonb2112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry, but your guide to terminating is a total fail. A proper scan of those drops would show you just how poor those connections are, it might work but it's not working as it should!

  • @CPLBSS88
    @CPLBSS88 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I say this because in my experience as an ISP tech, switch do fail quite often. For the price that you are going to pay for the one 8-port and the several other "mini switches", you could buy one 25 port and save yourself the headache. How many rooms and connections/ room do you need? How far apart is each run? What will you be running on each port? These are all questions that we would need answered to make sure you are not wasting your money.

  • @MrCablejockey
    @MrCablejockey 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some good info here, but you will NOT terminate your cabeling to a 110block. That is used for voice infrastructure. You will want to terminate the wiring to a patch panel. Also when making your RJ45 ends you dont have to follow standard color scheme. You can terminate how ever you want just as long as it matches on both ends. I wouldnt use a magic marker on the jacks. I would use a label maker as it will look more professional.If you are going to run cable i would use PLENUM rated cable.

  • @elzzon
    @elzzon 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a pretty standard 4-port keystone coverplate. They sell ones similar to that at Home Depot and Lowes. The only thing that makes the one in the video special are the little recesses over the top and bottom screws, for inserting labels. Those are more common in commercial installations; ones without the label recesses are more common for residential use. Amazon and CablesToGo sell both, but I'd check local stores first.

    In America, the houses are massive so this is needed. In Holland the houses are very small. A 3 bedroom combine is equivalent to a master bed room in America. 110 is also used in patch paneling, i think you are confusing it with 66 block which most phone wiring is done on. He does have some good tips although his wall jacks are a bit sloppy (too much cable showing) but that is just me nit picking, its fine for residential, but i would chew anyone out doing that in a commercial setting ;)

  • @CPLBSS88

    It depends on the switches throughput speed, rating, and quality. Switches nowadays are pretty good at not being a parasite. Older tech. like hubs can slow down a network...it all just depends on the age and quality of the system.

    I've done exactly waht you said But I ran into an issue that You should cover! A single ethernet conection per room is not enough, so I added a switch to ea Rm & lost communication at each swtich! Non of them work! I found out I need a "Smart Swith" a "NETGEAR - ProSafe 8-Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch" so that it assigns IP adresses to all switches that are to piggyback on It. I'm about to go purchase this swith but I would appreciate your input. I need to configuring it.

    Crosstalk crosstalk crosstalk!! That has got to be the worst wiring of a rj45 modular jack i have ever seen.. There shouldn't be any more than 13mm of wire untwist otherwise you'll be creating crosstalk between pairs.. And using cat6 over cat5 is a no brainer.. pairs in a cat6 cable are twisted tighter than pairs in a cat5 reducing crosstalk..

      Also cat6 has a Cross of plastic to seperate the pairs to reduce crosstalk.

    Well, I just deleted that angry rant about kids and their lack of respect for their elders, and how much worse it is getting ...
    So instead, I will congratulate the video author on his success and what appears to be a fine tutorial. Also, a lot of real world facilities (which most of you complaining pestilence will never set foot in with a toner) still use boilers - a word he earned the right to use synonymously, because of this very entertaining and informative video. You can also tell he is a great father :)
    He admitted the keystone job was sloppy. You nerds who have never done anything but computers are beginning to upset me.
    That being said, yeah ... one of the prominent books on Amazon ((kin to one that I had the author admit that he would revise the next edition (still waiting for my name in the forward)) does begin the OSI Model chapter relating layer one to the physical medium. It tells a personal experience where someone had to get into a crawl space to determine that cross talk was the culprit. Keep your twist close. I'm sure he did in the real world. Hmmm, the real world.
    The truth of the matter is, a good technician is a technician that has bravely and painstakingly learned from others FOR YEARS in such a way to culminate a broad spectrum of knowledge related to each subject where that technician has experience. YOU CANNOT LEARN THAT IN A BOOK OR ON THE INTERNET. Only by observation and direct communication does the fiber get laid. You kids working to be antisocial would do well to learn from that.

    The router can be plugged on any cat5x network outlet and it should be good to go.
    Here's the order: cable modem --->router--->cat5x outlet-->terminated to the switch where all cat5x cables meet. That's it.

    • @nos676
      @nos676 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TP 4UrbHol defuq is cat5x.
      As far as ethernet goes there's Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a.
      at least you know the order. modem, router, switch, patch panel, keystone wall plate, ethernet cable to device.
