Produced videos are good for detailed "to the point" content.
Vlog-style has a more personal feel to it, wich we can relate to.
I vote for the "Big Mixture" option. It's nice to see something different from time to time. :-)

Agreed, but also you just get to see them be their selves and you get info you normally wouldn't from a produced video,
the vlogs are appealing for the same reason I even watch TH-cam vs TV. I like to watch people, real people, get shit done, accomplish things, inspire me to do things in my own life. I learn from their mistakes and I do better for it.
The vlogs are usually about a specific real life issue you need to fix or want to fix so nearly everyone gains from them.
Other videos are specific maybe relevant to someone buying a radiator, or doing a build in the near future etc. When I'm between builds I gloss over a lot of the parts reviews and stuff.

The thing I really like about these vlogs is that here is something that I can do too. I can't afford to build a new pc at the moment (let alone something along the lines of SkunkWorks), but I can do some work on fixing up my garage/shop, or update my modem/network.

They give a good sense of perspective as well as updates and progress, in future when you refer to something we can all relate to it.
+A Vong yeah.. i also like that it's kinda personal.. it's not a shot of the same room with benchmarks and overviews of the latest of the bazillion 980's out there as Jaap Brasser said.. it's more of this daily life situation.. also i like this kind of tech related stuff about tv, internet, network and so on.. i mean there are so many reviews of any gpu, cpu, whatever out there but if you think about it you mabye have to deal with buying a new video card like once every 2-3 years.. then you set a budget and get a card in that range and then those videos can help to find the brand and card where you get the most out of your money..
dealing with this network stuff is most likely even rarer as you usually don't move around that much but everyone deals with it sometimes.. so it's nice to see other peoples solutions. i like watching videos about it... well i also think i won't buy a gpu for like 2 years or so.. but still i watch the videos.. i like to be well-informed about the tech stuff..

I feel like vlogs (like these) are raw and real. It is easy to relate to when things don't always go to plan because that is pretty much what the rest of us have to deal with.
Vlogs are great cause its give me ideas for stuff I could do around my house... and also Nice to see off the cuff stuff and get a glimpse into the real you and relate to you a bit better
I really enjoy blogs due to their variety of content and relatability. I find there are a number of things that I can do myself by seeing others do it.
I enjoyed this video and here is why:
- Educational, I learned quite a bit about how to set up my own future home, and what issues I might encounter.
- Relate-able, every day life stuff that I'm assuming applies to most home owners or people who rent places.
- Entertaining, most vlog-style videos you post are pretty interesting to watch, maybe it's just the type of person you are and somehow you make them work, but keep it up.
- In the future, if you believe your view count / subscription count went down, make a new channel dedicated to vlogs..
Some things I thought were, 'meh':
- Final product, my expectations of you are pretty high.. When watching your videos, I always assume you know everything. Obviously it's unreasonable, but that's just how you present yourself, as a knowledgeable person. Wish the final organization was slightly better (specifically that board and router mounting) I was kind of expecting something more.
Future Videos:
- More vlog style, DYI, type videos would be appreciated.
- How you set up your equipment (PC related and maybe video or both idk)

I love the VLOG content because as you said, it's relateable. It's just nice to watch. No numbers, graphs, etc.
I like vlogs because they are "real". It's like you are there.
That's why I love my wife. I have an entire room in the house for my stuff and it contains our household network rack. She doesn't care because she knows that I keep the network going in the house and she's a nerd like me. So she just gets it. I married right.

I like the VLOGs because you seem to enjoy doing it and sharing with us, I personally feel as though I'm standing around in your location and listening to you. When you share your family and your efforts to set up things, and even when you do driving VLOGs... it's just more real life and raw at times.

I like seeing stuff like this because it helps me get ideas for when I redo my setup when I move this summer. I am trying to find a really good desk that can have 3 monitors and still have plenty of length space. I am ocd about the wires too, so your under the desk cage idea was brilliant! Keep it up man. You're my Go-To PC TH-camr, but I do like to see stuff like this that is outside of the PC spectrum.
your vlogs are really informative and interesting to watch because it feels like your part of the project as you work your way through it. and honestly i really like the end product of the solution you put together and dont think it look bad at all. especially where its in the closest and wont be out in the open or viewed very often. love all your content Jay keep it up :)
You can mount your wall mount board to a couple 2x4's giving you room behind the board to tuck the power cables/bricks away.
I think the main reason that people like the vlogs or at leas the reason that i like them so much is because it allows you to see the youtubers life a little more and get to know them better which you dont really get to do in your or other tech youtubers videos.
this is great, the reason why is because I want to build a nice patch panel for myself and my father, he currently has VDSL coming into his home with a lot of networking devices, he has poor internet on one end of his home and the fact that he's wanting each room wired with Ethernet and coax (for Antenna) it will make a nice one stop place for all networking needs.
Thanks for making this vid. I watched it years ago before having my own place. However, now that I have my place and I'm involved in IT, networking has become a whole lot more relevant. I'm glad to have an example of what you are doing for your setup.
I like the blogs because, its like an insight to what goes on behind the scenes, its also like... more personal compared to the more... heavy production type things. Keep up the great work!

The joy of the vlogs you do bud is that's they're simple, spontaneous and as a result are uncluttered in theirselves. You get to see the thought process that goes into it, and often shows whatever you're tackling as a real tech/DIY problem! It imparts confidence to the viewer and allows you to tag along :) love em. Cheers man! Don't forget to keep enjoying the coffee :)
I like your vlogs Jay because it makes me feel like I too could do some of these tech projects myself. Rather than underestimate myself when I see your finely polished videos. Hope you get more projects.
I like these vlogs because they have an point. Others vlogs have something like: I just woke up, Iam ill and you have: Network upgrade, PC upgrade and i like this
I liked this video because it might give me ideas on future stuff to do at my house.
I am an audio visual learner. While scrolling on TH-cam I saw something that I have a LeGrand On Q RG6 Coaxial cable installed in my home, and a passive splitter that was purchased in 2013 as well as an installed network box and Ethernet cable, and other associated peripherals. All of which haven’t been installed yet.
With TH-cam videos I have learned about the smart home, increased capabilities and potential of the smart home. Learning how to DIY provides one with the necessary information of what needs to be done, how it needs get done, and the tools to get my home in order, which includes the strategic placement of an organized network box, and cable management of said network box.
Tech vlogs are nice because they are informative, it's something that you can watch casually, and because it is a little cozy; feels like the watcher is there and following you through your techy problems and the solituions to them. It's just generally nice imo.
I think you're right, that I like vlogs because it's more personal, more involved, and not a production.
Also, if you'd vlog getting that whole fancy media room together, that'd be greeeeeeeeeat
The hole for the power point in the cabinet is actually the correct side of the stud for an electrician to easily run a cable to the power point. Just cut a notch in the stud to make the power point fit
I enjoy the vlogs you do because it offers a different way of you teaching me things. Such as all these networking videos you have been doing and I've been loving! Showing rather than telling offers allows me to fully understand what your doing and to see the parts you buy so I know what they look like before you alter them. For example the rubber grommet hole. I honestly didn't know how to do that but now I do! I could name more but that's the gist!
You nailed why I like these vlogs style videos, they feel really authentic. I also like to see stuff happening in real time, going through the learning process with you is a good time.
I enjoy the vlogs because they're fun to watch.
9/10 times i don't really care about the product you're reviewing, but i watch anyway because i like you and your videos.

Hey Jay... I enjoy and appreciate all your content, reviews, advice. etc.. I also really love this kind of vlog for a couple of reasons: It's always useful to see how someone has tackled a particular problem or project, to provide inspiration for my own projects. Perhaps best of all though, it's a just a fun way to get a more personal look into the life of Jay! Having watched your channel for years, you've become (whether you like it or not) a virtual friend, and it's always fun to see what your friends are up to! Here's to many more vlogs.. Thanks dude!
I like the vlogs because it's like I am hanging out with you. Vlogs motivate me to actually get work done. seeing time lapses of cleaning the wires up, or just like cleaning in general makes me that much more aware that I should pause the video and do that one task that I need to do. And then get back to the vlog.
Happenstance! That is why Vlogs work. When you(or any vlogger) runs into a wall and has to change an idea midstream, it's real.
use standoffs at the mounting hardware for the broad to the wall power bricks and wire go on the back side of the broad drill some holes for where the wires come thru the broad at each unit it would look nice and clean. only bad thing is you did the video in February and now it is June.
I was going to suggest the same thing. Also you could pick up a couple wall warts at a thrift store that have the same output as the huge power blocks to replace them. Just be sure to check for correct polarity!
Or just use PoE also known as Power over Ethernet
The Vlogs are awesome Jay. It shows, in my opinion, what most channels lack. The lack is the detail and the real-life, real-world, hands-on experience that we all as humans face. As well as bringing a new personal side of Jay that I enjoy seeing. The project turned out great. Keep up the good work.

I'd move the nighthawk somewhere more central to get better wifi coverage!
I would get rid of the ethernet switch and wifi router and just use a 16 port vpn gigabit router e.g. Cisco RV325 Gigabit

So I will have to get creative with the networking options. The board mounting seems like a very easy solution. Cheers!
I like seeing how the back-end of your videos work. The formal content is the primary thing, but when there’s not much formal content to make, the vlogs are an interesting behind-the-scenes look.

Years late but I love these type vlogs because they feel more like real world situations than produced instructional material. Both have their merits but seeing the things talked about in produced videos being applied in a real situation is both entertaining and informative.
I prefer the vlogs. You're a funny guy, and that doesn't come through as much on your regular content.
But hey, I feel like I learn something no matter what kind of video you make, so keep it up, man. :)

I like how you take us through all of your steps, explaining why you do things the way you do.
JAY- I have seen your "professionally produced" videos but this is the first of your Vlog videos I have seen. I can see Why these are so popular - In PRO videos, you never see the DIY guy make a mistake or explore alternative plans. Here you not only demonstrate what your plan is but you also leave in your mistakes (in thinking as well as physical work errors) and that makes you more relate-able to the average person. Also, you are not in a hurry but take the time to discuss what you are doing or trying to accomplish - even as you realize you made a mistake drilling a hole for the grommet you planned to use, you demonstrated how you recovered from that mistake with a simple fix, the use of a larger grommet to "fix" the problem. I was taught in college to make "Pro" style videos with required scripts written out ahead of time but in real life not all goes as planned.
Also, Your problem with long cables has an easy fix - in this day of modular cables even your cables are available in shorter sizes available for purchase from various internet sources. One of many is a place called "Cable Guys" - search everywhere beyond Amazon or Ebay and you can find them. I have found power cords and Internet patch cords as short as 1 foot for sale on the internet. Nowadays I make my own AC and Ethernet cables, so I could see making custom cables to suit your closet situation..but anyone can buy the right length cables with a proper internet search.
I can't really explain why I like the vlogs, It's just interesting I guess :P

I like the vlogs because they end up just showing how you would do it instead of editing out all he mistakes. It shows the problems that some people go through to try and work with what they have in front of them instead of what would be ideal

I like seeing vlogs like this because this is a project many of us will probably need to do in the future. (fixing our own networks/creating our own network box)
The vlogs are comfortable for me to watch because it`s personal, relatable and reminds me you`re just a hardworking guy just like all of us, helps with motivation and confidence if you wanna go real deep.

It's because it's real life tech problems/issues, not some super awesome water cooled beast PC no one can afford. Everyone can relate to working around the the house trying to get their tech working better...
I enjoy your vlog type things because so far you've been showing off some interesting stuff like tidying up network lung stuff which kinda helps other people get an idea of how to do that stuff themselves and the vlog style makes it seem that anyone can do it whereas if it had been an edited video with lots of b-roll and expert lighting etc makes it seem that only people who really know what they're doing/ professionals should ever even try something like this, plus more content from jay!

Reason(s) to use a patch panel: If something happens to your RJ45 connector or the end of the cable (from the curved pressure or constant replugging), and you do not have enough slack on your cable to recut the end, you will have to run an entirely new cable in your attic. Or, if you have a patch panel, just replace the patch cable or use a different port.
Can anyone else share insights on the benefits of using a patch panel vs plugging directly into a switch?
@@ryand1520 useful if you want to directly connect two wall drops as well for whatever reason - just patch them on the patch panel. makes it a lot easier to replace switches as well
Curious why you wouldn't just ditch that router and get Ubiquiti networks Access points.
The router hands out all the ip address to the device and a switch does not do that
gomezjr22 yes but he could turn off the wireless segment off and leave DHCP on and use the APs for better coverage.
Great video Jay. You should do a video explaining your full network setup. How everything is wired and how you get a full signal without degradation.
Excellent. I'd have left it like that too. Perfect enough. It works, so good enough. Also, I liked your patch cabling to the switch. That is how mine is done; was fast & cheap. I didn't mess with having a patch panel and STP with Cat6 in the walls. Cat5e was good enough for me, during this generation of hardware. Thanks for sharing your life & lessons with us.

I like watching tech vlogs because it's practical stuff that we do in the real word and often other people have some smart solutions, shortcuts or just generally a way of looking at something you might not have thought of by yourself

It looks "messy", but far from it.
I like this kind of vlogs because usually what the camera shows is how your mind works. Who watches tech related videos usually is that kind of person interested in "problem solving". So if the subject of the video is not completely boring and you let us understanding step-by-step how you reached a solution or you managed to build an original "tech thing" i think there will be always someone who likes it.
I do this stuff all the time, I enjoy watching others do it because it gives you new and fresh ideas.
Vlogs have a very personal and relatable feel to them. They are good in moderation compared to the professional videos normally put out. It shows the audience that the Jay that shows us the absolute perfect rigs and setups does have bumps in the road. That no one does an absolute perfect job all the time and that all it takes to turn a messy situation into one that we can be proud of is a little thinking and ingenuity.
the vlogs are good because they are relatable, not all of us can buy $400+ graphics cards, but most of us have a wire mess or have moved and had to deal with coaxial splitters and we can get some ideas on how to wire manage. The vlog gives the sense that what you are doing is sort of winging it and see how it goes not rehearsed wich is good once in a while
VLOGS YAY! for me its all about behind the scenes. I love to see how things are done behind the scenes and how things work, also the processes of getting things done. It gives us ideas for our own systems (apart from can't afford most of what you have!).

Thank you for this vlog. I know it was posted way back in 2016. But hey, since my bf don't know how to do this and it's my place, I got to learn this stuff. Luckily my nyc friend is going to walk me through this process via phone. And has explained it to me via language I understand. Videos are super helpful to just see a visual process and thought that goes behind the task!
I like vlogs because I guess it's something more raw and not rehearsed. Makes it feel like the person is chatting to you and you get to go along in the journey.
I too like your vlogs because there relatable and kind of cool to see what you have done from start to finish.

I subscribed to the channel because I like your style: Entertaining, not taking yourself too serious etc. but still on the oint and informative ...and that all comes through in the Vlogs.

Just found this Video. Thank you. I have the same router and same patch panel at home with just about the same amount of DirecTV/Comcast coax cabling. This was very helpful. I have two smaller switches and getting one larger one like you have will help my cleanup.
The nice things about vlogs are that we often find ourselves in similar situations and like to see how others deal with them. And I'm not great with house stuff, so it helps me generate a game plan in my head before I begin a project.
