      One question about separate camera network. You've said that it prevents someone from accessing your home network if they access camera network, however I remember reading somewhere that vlans aren't meant for security, they are used for logical device separation and performance improvements (due to lesser amount of CPU interrupts generated on ARPs and other broadcasts).
      So are they a good method of isolating networks from intruders? I'm learning networking right now, so sorry if my question sounds dumb.

    • @lefteye129
      @lefteye129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Дмитрий Ковалёв i am sure he will reply but VLANs are also used for security. I think he said that it will prevent access to camera network if someone gets in home network.. since they will be on separate VirtualLans, access from one network shouldnt mean data on other can be accessed... very nicely done

    • @TheGeekPub
      @TheGeekPub  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You are correct. The VLANs are separated by my firewall.

    • @BB-he9qo
      @BB-he9qo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That sounds like a great video idea. With IOT devices making people nervous, a lot of us would benefit from knowing about VLAN's and setting them up, when to use them, when not to, why you use them to segment, hardware vs software? I'd definitely like to implement it, kind of hard getting a starting point..

    • @mike_x48954
      @mike_x48954 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The alarm fog machines require a special type of fluid, so it wouldn't work too well if you do Dj fog fluid. The idea of it being green I like, the only problem is i've never seen coloured* fog fluid. You could have green strobe lights to make it seem green.

      @@TheGeekPub Well in that case, go knocking on some doors and ask if'd they'd like free internet, all they have to do is let you setup your tower. Then throw in a Ubiquity Router and dedicate 70Mbps to them, add a small UPS, and call it a day. You could even use a VPN for transmitting over the air.
      However you might want to register a non-profit organization, then you're not responsible if they go pirating movies or whatnot.
      I know this sounds like a bit of work, but when has being a tech guy ever actually been easy? XD

    Awesome infrastrucrure you have in there! One question though: wouldn't it make more sense to use access points such as the ones from Ubiquiti? They are cheaper than Apple, have great performance and can be powered via POE reduncing the cable mess around the sockets.

    Wow. Is that really how Verizon sets up their modems? In an enclosed box with no air flow. The cable modem that our provider setup at my place of work failed after a year due to a design defect where the air vents were blocked.
    Neat home though! I plan on constructing a dedicated network/server room once we redo our basement. Check out the Reolink cameras. I've setup a few of those in my home, and they're terrific. No third-party software bullshit, great image quality, and they're not priced too high.

      Ebay has incredible, unbelievable deals, in relation to what the equipment cost a year before when some fool (or some company under contract or long term lease agreement to bend over and take 10" of un-lubed man meat by buying a $50,000 server every year or every other year. Yes, that supports SOME jobs here in America, but in reality, it supports manufacturing in China more than anything here. Hell, I bought a particular server, that 4 years previous to my purchasing it on eBay, went retail north of $475,000 in 2010. I paid $1400.....in 2014. Took a truck and trailer (to quell confusion I mean a personal one driven everyday to work and back, parked in your garage, not an 18-wheeler) to get it. Several personal, day-to-day, face-to-face friends of mine- I host their commercial retail websites on the thing. One produces worldwide orders daily. I mean literally an item is ordered every day from every continent in the world (except antarctica, though the item his company is known for, hell it's in the title of the company, are on the intended market item/device which ARE presently in Antarctica). His business is tremendously succesful, and not because I do a great job with hosting/writing some of the site/managing it, but rather because he busted his ass from 14 years ago, refused to cut the smallest corner, no matter who WASN'T looking, no matter how much more the RIGHT metal alloy was for the job, regardless of how much he could save by downgrading alloys to something that would perform 90% as well. Some people are ok with a 50% price cut to lose 10% durability. Some are not. But by only having a top of the line-line for the longest, the public knew that his 'inferior' line, aka, 'economical' line came out and he promised a performance of xxxx/xxxxxx:xxx, people knew without a shadow of a doubt that his product would do it. He was recently bought out by an international conglomerate for God knows how much. Tens and tens or dozens and dozens of millions of dollars. He said he'd never been in the position to not know what it was like to not have to worry about money ever again and that it was almost uncomfortable. Anyways, his hard work from his garage led to lifetime financial security and makes me a nice little profit as well, as the conglomerate decided to keep his business just as is, but with their purchasing power on procurement of the raw materials, they will see an astronomical return on their investment because this guy's company's real value is the name. Work hard, don't compromise, and you will never wonder or need to ask how someone afforded anything. I mean that in a positive way, not a smart ass way, I swear.

    We live in Dallas as well and get AT&T Fiber. We get home phone and 1 gigabit internet for $100. We'd still have U-verse if it weren't for the fact that we found out AT&T changed their policy in 2016 stating that gigabit users no longer have to worry about a data cap if they want to drop their TV service. Technically, we could save another $35 just by dropping our phone service. But, we like having the redundancy in place in case we have an emergency (also, some of our utility services utilize our phone number as part of the location based services they provide).
