I appreciate the P.A.R. partner acceptance rating. It literally sounded like something that I already do before starting a project. You are very wise :) Keep up the good work
Just thought I'd let you know, I've been using Media Portal for many years with great results, and it gets the thumbs up from the wife, it also uses imdb to automatically scan for metadata. It handles just about any video format including dvd and bluray rips.
Love this video. Well done mate, an enthralling and entertaining guide. I would never recommend Windows Media Center though, not when you could use a far more friendly and customisable XBMC!
I use Handbrake to rip DVD's and it's really good, and free. I'm not sure about the others but Handbrake is based around VLC so it supports whatever filetype you want to output with.
Great Video...love those dogs. I don't use a OSX Macdrive is fine. Win 7 SP1 for the laptops, The server is Ancient but have Xenon chips and Runs Ubuntu/Win32 fine. 4TB RAID. I have a few Seagate 4 TBs external just got for $110 this weekend. For the TV have a WDTVLIVEHUB 1TB old now. I find Handbrake fine and ANY DVD. I use a Powerline set up because of all the wired/wireless stuff around so they'll all play nice and it makes wireless so much faster ! They're two little boxes and easy.
If u are high-tech, have a some money over you should look at the ceph system, pretty interesting. When i get a more money saved, ill be buying server hardware and harddrives and adding the ceph system to it. ITS AMAZING!
+1 for Plex. I'm running Plex Media Server on a Linux server in another room, serving everything to to every other device in the home. This includes my 50" TV, all computers, tablets and phones.
there s one flaw to this video CPU power can be needed for video rendering like the target device doesnt have the right codecs while the origin device has them well in DLNA if the target device doesnt have the codecs the device that is streaming to the target device can provide the codec while the video is playing
I have my network in place. My Home Media Server is up. I'm using "My Movies" as a front end. The problem I'm having at this point is I can not control the "My Movies" program with the remote control for the TV. The remote I'm using is the Harmony 700. How can I do a work around on this?
I actually have around 6TB of Data ( Video, Song ) and my OS SSD only have 120GB of total space. Minus the OS only have around 50GB. How im gonna fit all 6TB into 50GB SSD?
I would love to see a tutorial on how to set up a local wamp or IIS server that I can access from other computers on my home network. For instance I want to have a stand alone file server and web service with in my home network that my laptop and desktop can both access and exchange documents with remotely, along with a common database that I can use to manage my home office... Most of the tutorials show how to access the wamp or IIS server from out side of the local network but no one shows anything about how to access the server from other computers on the same LAN network???
+Peter Martinez-B We haven't done an episode of this show in years. I really like the Pi for projects, but sometimes it seems like it is more work than it's worth considering all the alternatives out there.
Why WMC recopy all files it found onto the LIBRARY? Why cant WMC just make a PLAYLIST and allow me to play without to copy any files to the LIBRARY. Please EXPLAIN.
excellent info, thanks, subcribed to you with gladness. I will listen to this again and again to note what products to use. I use handbrake already. What do you think of DVD flick? I use it as I don't yet have a media server (will follow what you say to build one though) as it saves me space until I have a media server.
hi man, I was wondering how you'd review your drobo after all this years. My external hard drive WD MyBookWorld is giving up and I was considering get a different solution. Thanks
does anyone remember the server built into an original xbox debug case, i thought it was this channel but its not. searched the whole of utube but the video is gone.
I started my venture in making my home media server and ran into a huge problem. Tried to use the application "MacTheRipper" and got this little nasty popup - "You can't open the application MacTheRipper because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Well were to go from here? Anyone have any ideas? I have over 350 movies in my library.

Can You download a flash player on a Sony Network Media Player, if so how can you help me out with this. I really don't want to watch Netflex old movies. Let me know if you can help. Thanks
This young nerd's choice: intel atom based board with a raid card in a self built k'nex-case... Trow linux on there and boom! Cheap NAS that lasts for years!
Beyond Raid, a raid invented by drobo which no one really knows beside the guys at drobo... Unfortunate. It does have Disk space virtualization on certain higher end drobos although which is nice.
O boy is that house messy . Why didn't he just have an Ethernet drobo down stairs with the full 6 tbs of storage . Ts files are messy also . You can have your movies in MKV files that are easier to sort tho . Then you can have the Mac mini with XBMC on it so you can tell it ware your server is and then you can also have XBMC repos on top of it . So it would be tv and mac mini up stairs and only and have the down stairs clean .
I have never ran into a DVD bigger than 6 GB. Not to say they dont exist. HD and Blue ray are In a different category. I havent seen one smaller than 6 GB.
Drobo DOES NOT backup your data, it provides redundancy so a single disk failure can be recovered from. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS A BACKUP. Just sayin' :-)
Man, I love this guy! Great dissemination of information. To the point, with NO fat! Thank You!
I always wanted an intro into setting up a home media system ... this is good!
Congrats on your new job at CNET!
I appreciate the P.A.R. partner acceptance rating. It literally sounded like something that I already do before starting a project. You are very wise :) Keep up the good work

Your point about saving time with the drobo is super helpful...thanks man.
Funny...I've been feeling over precisely the same topic lately myself!
Totally. Let's compare notes on this!
5:22 playing a video of Bill Gates on an iMac... Oh the Irony!
I vote for an update video. Shame on me if it already exists.
Love this video. Well done mate, an enthralling and entertaining guide.
I would never recommend Windows Media Center though, not when you could use a far more friendly and customisable XBMC!
Watching this in 2016 and still learning new stuff lol
Love the Garbage shout out! Ahhh, the 90's.
I like having both versions available.
I use Handbrake to rip DVD's and it's really good, and free. I'm not sure about the others but Handbrake is based around VLC so it supports whatever filetype you want to output with.
Unicron? Shockwave? I like this guy!
"If you're using this [shows Ipod headset] you obviously don't care about your music"... xDDDD LMAO
Lovely dogs! Had a yellow lab who died a year ago - so sad!
Great vid, very helpful. I am a networking newbie and this was really useful, thanks!

wow these videos are well put together. You sir just earned a new subscriber.
Greatest batman movie ever.
Yeah handbrake is great for video encodes, you can also just make an ISO with DVD decrypter as well and open it up on VLC just like a regular DVD.
If u are high-tech, have a some money over you should look at the ceph system, pretty interesting. When i get a more money saved, ill be buying server hardware and harddrives and adding the ceph system to it. ITS AMAZING!
$110 Each..... great deal for external drives. They were 180US a few months ago. I'm going to be looking for my first SSD very soon !
there is a magnet is the hdd which controls the little arm. You need a really strong magnet to actually corrupt data.
+1 for Plex. I'm running Plex Media Server on a Linux server in another room, serving everything to to every other device in the home. This includes my 50" TV, all computers, tablets and phones.
I just found your channel. Awesome job. Subscribed!

My next house needs to have a basement. Much easier to drop wires to each room.
Good information and entertaining! I like this dude!
I love your shows

How im gonna fit all 6TB into 50GB SSD?
The magnetic face on the drobo sounds scary with all those hdds
Great videos man. I'm curious to know how well does your xbox 360 web cam work on your setup? Does it have a mic for recording audio?
Great video, as a husband the whole partner approval rating is very important to me lol.
Wow you need an Electrician ;-) great stuff
Thumbs up for being an Elvis fan!! 11:10
Trying to figure out how to relocate my modem to a differnt part of the house. Original installers used 3 Twisted Pairs for phone etc

Will you start some vids using the Rasberrypi for some home projects?
+Peter Martinez-B We haven't done an episode of this show in years. I really like the Pi for projects, but sometimes it seems like it is more work than it's worth considering all the alternatives out there.

Why WMC recopy all files it found onto the LIBRARY? Why cant WMC just make a PLAYLIST and allow me to play without to copy any files to the LIBRARY. Please EXPLAIN.
Hi what remote control technology were you using to navigate the Media Center on your pc in your bedroom?
where would be the best place to find old mac minis?
So I am confused why don't you just use PLEX does all of this ?
nice cable management!
excellent info, thanks, subcribed to you with gladness. I will listen to this again and again to note what products to use. I use handbrake already. What do you think of DVD flick? I use it as I don't yet have a media server (will follow what you say to build one though) as it saves me space until I have a media server.
Great video.
Hi can I use a NAS as a media server? Or the storage has to be directly attached to a PC?
hi man, I was wondering how you'd review your drobo after all this years. My external hard drive WD MyBookWorld is giving up and I was considering get a different solution. Thanks
I'm not even going to do this and this video was helpful.
this is an awesome video... keep it up
you missed VLC, the master piece of media. It can read cd/dvd and convert it to any format you want
Kodi(XBMC) is the king of media center
I'm wondering if you have any new shows , for 2014
does anyone remember the server built into an original xbox debug case, i thought it was this channel but its not.
searched the whole of utube but the video is gone.
are magnets next to those hdd a good idea??
I started my venture in making my home media server and ran into a huge problem. Can we use it as file sharing as well?
Can You download a flash player on a Sony Network Media Player, if so how can you help me out with this. I really don't want to watch Netflex old movies. Let me know if you can help. Thanks
What model Drobo do you have? And did you say it can be set up as a RAID? Thanks.
What device you have connected to the tv to access you files on tv ?
Thanks for the helpful video.
Great Video
I like the way you describe about a home media server, and I need your support. By the way am from east Africa I mean I am from Ethiopia.
DUDE!!!..... You got a DELL!!
Your from Stickney Il right? I know those basements and they all look the same.
actually mac osx is a variation of UNIX (which is really LINUX defined)
so when you say mac what you mean is a $2000 pc running a proprietary Linux.
Do far flac is the best quality I've come across.
I was wondering if anyone out there can help me. I'm looking for anyway to get it of the artwork for my DVDs appreciate any links or suggestions
on mac you can use handbreak
Not an issue, HDD have a massive strong magnet inside them itself
It seems this just complicated things . Doesnt a homegroup do the same exact thing?
get "MakeMKV" to rip dvd's, then you can use "Handbrake" to convert those mkv files to mp4, avi or whatever you want.
6:35 OH MY GOD! The Wires! they are everywhere!!!!
This young nerd's choice: intel atom based board with a raid card in a self built k'nex-case... Trow linux on there and boom! Cheap NAS that lasts for years!
very good video
Beyond Raid, a raid invented by drobo which no one really knows beside the guys at drobo... Unfortunate. It does have Disk space virtualization on certain higher end drobos although which is nice.
Plex works great. But what if you have an Opera TV? Plex doesn't work on my Sony Bravia.
how about iso format
O boy is that house messy . Why didn't he just have an Ethernet drobo down stairs with the full 6 tbs of storage . Ts files are messy also . why would you want ts files for just download or turn them into MKV files
yeah. i saw a video where someone loaded xbox's media os in it.
macs are amazing
Im ganna have to try the drobo. I have 4 2tb hard drives and looks horrible.
Q:"How do you get your beatles album"
A:ITUNES
theyre not THAT sensitive to magnetism xD tiny magnets arent going to interfere with drives over an inch away
plust i also run crashplan on my unRAID server and use it to back up my computers to a local computer. It works very well so far.
I have never ran into a DVD bigger than 6 GB. Not to say they dont exist. HD and Blue ray are In a different category. I havent seen one smaller than 6 GB.
I could do a whole ep on front ends, esp. on XBMC.
Drobo DOES NOT backup your data, it provides redundancy so a single disk failure can be recovered from. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS A BACKUP. Just sayin' :-)
Whats the bet he didn't even watch a movie after this video?
awesome
dont thin k there is enough plugs in that back wall
so this is where he started.. you old nerd!! lol
