    DANGER. This episode mentions a image burning software called ImgBurn. When installing, it will try to get you to install a insanely problematic toolbar called Conduit Search. Do NOT do a quick install. MAKE SURE YOU UNCHECK ALL THE BOXES. DO NOT INSTALL SPYWARE TOOLBARS.

    Hi guys!
    Great video but have one suggestion: Calling everything (folder, drives, etc) "diytryin" may become confusing for the viewer if they are totally new to the process (like me!). I know you love the name, but maybe add a suffix to the names like "diytryin - Storage" and "diytryin - Windows share" etc. This way the viewer can differentiate between what they are looking at in your tutorial. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

    Please follow their advice on the ZFS parity, It is way better than stock RAID5 but still has the added benefit of extra space. The array is software driven so having a decent amount of ram is a MUST. The golden rule on the forums is at least 2GB at first and then another 1GB per TB of space in the RAID.
    Your array of drives is only limited by your maximum amount of ram in your system, Or the software will flip out when it doesnt have enough ram to maintain the array properly.
    I am a pc nerd whos also working on getting his A+, so I like this Open source NAS and I thank the super nerd who put it on the internet for us nerds :)

    Don't use WD Green drives. They are not rated for RAID, and while they will work in a software RAID configuration (such as ZFS) they do not sync well together and are prone to sync errors which leads to slower than normal performance at best, and errors and rebuilds at worst. And rebuilds really suck when you have a lot of medium to large drives involved. Even WD's website says not to use Green drives for this type of use. It is just a bad idea.
    If you want to go cheap then get some Seagate drives. Otherwise spend the money for some WD Black or Red drives which are made specifically for multi-drive setups.

    My cousin is a test engineer at Intel. They will use perfectly brand new parts for a test station and once that section or whatever is done. They throw em away. Needless to say I got a pile of 3TB WD Reds, a shit ton of Intel SSDs, and a hand full of m.2 drives collection dust in my parts bin. Yes Intel will allow there employees to keep the parts rather than just trashing em.

I also give info about mirror raidz1 raidz2 and how many hdd space you loose in each config.

    Never build a NAS on a non-ECC ready PC. NEVER!

    • @StrengthInSpirit
      @StrengthInSpirit 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rudde Yeah so ECC memory generates less error when manipulating data right? Is it that important even if my persoonnal NAS will mostly have movies and family photos. My current "NAS" has windows7 x64 installed on it, and I'm planning on installing either freeNas or Nas4free.

    • @StrengthInSpirit
      @StrengthInSpirit 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rudde yeah so think it is more important to have ecc memory on nas systems? Cause my pc doesn't have ecc memory (as the majority of pc), and I dont have that mich randomly corrupted files.

    • @TrimbleEpic
      @TrimbleEpic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I understand the issue correctly, the problem wit not using ECC is unique to ZFS because of the fact that 1) ZFS calculates hashes for everything... If the data gets corrupted in memory for any reason, the hash gets calculated from the bad data... And 2) ZFS scrubs data periodically, and when it finds the bad hash, it silently FIXES the data to be bad. Over and over again... And more and more data keeps getting "fixed" eventually killing ALL of the data...

    • @JarrettWilliams99
      @JarrettWilliams99 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trimble Epic its strength is it's crippling weakness. I think 100% of us would rather have a glitch in a video or a messed up picture than lose 100% of our data. They really need to fix this.

  • @NathanASexton1
    @NathanASexton1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of typing in an IP address into a browser to access the FreeNAS remotely (I'm assuming you can do that), can you somehow set up a sort of domain name instead? Say, you have kids and, instead of having them remember all those numbers, you just have them remember a simple website name, where they're prompted to log into their portion of the drive(s). Is that possible?
    And, I'm assuming that, if a user is not granted root access (wheel auxiliary group), they won't be seeing the same interface that a user within the wheel auxiliary group would be seeing. Correct?
    Eventually, when I'm older and have kids, I would like for us as a family to have a central home server that my kids can access remotely very simply and efficiently. So, I'm trying to plan all this out now so that, later in life, I won't have to do all the research again. When I'm ready, I can just jump right into setting it all up.

    FreeNAS is cool. I had it for a long time. I would however recommend using a HARDWARE RAID controller and NOT using Software RAID. Although SW RAID works, it does corrupt easier.
    For a cheap solution, but a HP Microserver. About +- $150. It gives you five SATA ports which can give you up to 16 TB of usable space with 4TB disks.

    Hi, I have an old HP Pavilion 061 PC190A-ABA a556x - 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, that struggles playing XBMC sometimes. I just got it and it only has 1 gig of ram. Could I take that to my local Tech store and get a modern motherboard and build it from there? Any recommendations? It's an ATX case.

  • @john_thorpe
    @john_thorpe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I picked up a Fractal Define 804 case, a Silverstone Strider 500 W Gold Power Supply, a Startech.com PEXSAT34RH RAID Card and a ASRock QC5000-ITX motherboard for a little over $100 today.
    I'd like to do a NAS Box with it. From Crucial it says it can support up to 32 GB of RAM. I have yet to get RAM or Hard Drives for it. I'm thinking of using 8 x 6 TB Red drives or at minimum 8 x 4 TB Red drives.
    I'm looking for a set up where I can combine the drives into one in a RAID 5 style where I can lose one drive and rebuild the drive set. Also, since drives cost a good amount, I'll only be able to pick up a drive or two at a time over a period of time.
    I know it's best to build it all at once, but current money status won't allow it. So is there any setup I can do with the above parts and one that'll allow me to add drives over time (preferably without having to remove all the data on the drives) to increase the size, and one in a RAID 5 style where I can lose a drive and be able to replace it without losing data?
    Thanks.

I have had a FreeNAS server set up in my office, I've now moved that to my home using the same switch (Netgear ProSAFE GS116E) but when I type in the HTTP:// number my PC which is connected to the PC (which in the office was connected to this network, the only difference is the computers are both plugged straight into the switch instead of into the wall first) the HTTP:number doesn't work, Chrome simply shows me a page which says "This site can't be used.... took too long to respond." So how the heck do I get in? =(

    Please don't use WD Green. All the green drives I have had (and I have gone through several) die much earlier earlier than any of the other WD Drives. Red is set up for RAID / file server type use, and BLACK I think is for 'server' use, basically full time availability. If you read the Backblaze Blog, they review drives and what they have the best results with. ... Still, great post!

    Used an old dell r710 the 6x 3.5 drive. $140 from ebay. Added a zfs flashed controller going for zraid1. Found a good deal on 4tb enterprise sas drives from hgst. Freenas did not like me. Jails just did not want to start. So ubuntu server and added the gui. Set everything up as a NAS for about $500.
    Now off to my next project pfsense router on a dell r210 that I got for $55. Also picked up a dell 6248 for $1.
    Prices are low for me. I live in texas just down from dell. If I get it on ebay or craigslist it's just a 1 hour drive.

    Glad to see the box in the demo doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements for FreeNAS. Also there's that fine distinction that 3-4GB of ram is enough for ZFS, but not enough for FreeNAS. You will be running it with prefetch disable, which will hurt performance. Plus the Rule of thumb when sizing ram needs is 1GB per 1TB of usable space.

  • @happyfrog4445
    @happyfrog4445 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought I could use the same old hardware too. Once you get into this, you will realize that the ZFS file system needs 16GB of ECC ram and really thrives on server-grade hardware. FreeNAS is enterprise-grade stuff. Running it with outdated hardware is really putting your data at risk. Check out the freeNAS forums and you will read all about it. They really need to stop telling people you can use your old junk pc parts.

    I ZFS is a filesystem like ext4. Its not a type of raid. I has different raid types it can setup in software however. You keep mentioniong ZFS as if its like raid 5. You are thinking of RaidZ1. ZFS uses a different set of terminologies. If you are making a tech video it makes it less painful for more advanced users. I have my own Freenas box at home with 10TB of space and I absolutely love it. I have enough speed off 7 disks that I can saturate a 1gb/s ethernet line.

I guess you could refurbish an old PC and use it for an HTPC but new ones are small, inexpensive and use a lot less energy...The only thing an old PC is good for is cannibalizing the cables etc...

    I agree with other comment. It's too simple for advanced users, and too complex for newbies. For example, as far as I know, you first have to create the file system, and later the partitions. Also, about the hard disk, I've read somewhere else that the hard disk should be identical, at least in size. Also, would be nice to see what happens if one of the disk fails, and what one have to do to get it back again. And also, what happens if the computer crash and you have to move the disks to another PC. How to proceed? Would the old data stay there? Do you have to reinstall them in the same order or something? How do one upgrade Freenas if a new release come? I know that I can google and get the answers myself, but I also think it would be great to have a video with some more information, and professional advice about what and what not to do. I hope you find it interesting too! Thank you!

    Can I use my storage hard drives for this? Can I rescue my data from current drives. They stopped working after moving managed to get all but two working by removing from the cases and putting them into my computer but have run out of power and sata ports on motherhood

    FYI and a word to the wise, the average home tower has a set number of racks used for various devices other than just hard drives like card readers, audio devices, dvd burners, but when you run a single drive, the hard drive get a bit warmer than your own body temp, but if you stack one hard drive on top of the other and all it takes is two, they get super hot and the more you stack, the hotter they get and this is the real reason people need hard drive coolers and if you can manage to find a way to separate them like only using every other bay you're just fine and you wont need to spend the money for coolers, but avoid screwing them down using the four screw holes on the bottom because again, they can't breathe and if you run them hot, their lifespan is heavily shortened! Check me if I'm wrong, but if you feel them getting hot, separate them!

    Thats a nice idea to recycle an old pc for settings up a 24/7 NAS but please keep in mind that it will use more watts for operating than a new minimal ATOM system would.

      Just pull the multiplier and voltage down. And make the drives spin down after 15 minutes. Fan profiles can also help. That should be rather economical and schouldn't cost much more to run. Not enough to justify buying new parts. You could even set up wol to only let it only run when people are actually home.

    I think this will waste money , electricity , and after one month of 24/7 you will have to
    change the motherboard or the cpu .

    Check out NAS4Free which is a fork of FreeNAS, but which can run on much more modest hardware than FreeNAS needs.

    Can you use external USB hard drives ?
    Like, I want my laptop to be open 24/7 as it's quite and small enough to fit in a drawer and just leave it the with the hard drives.
    Also can you use WiFi or should it be connected to my router ?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @SmartLifeEnthusiast
      @SmartLifeEnthusiast 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +lennonSystems You could, but you will be limited to USB speeds then.
      I also would not suggest using a laptop.
      Yes you can work over WiFi, but for best performance it's better to used an Ethernet (wired) connection, as WiFi speeds are a lot slower compared to Ethernet and they drop if more devices join the same network.
      You'd be better off with a simple computer (even without case), connecting the drives to the actual cables (e.g. SATA). With a simple fan, you can cool the pc (which won't heat up that much) and keep dust from nesting.
      You could mount all your hardware on a wooden plate the size of your drawer, to prevent it from moving while running if you open the drawer. Make a small hole in the back of the drawer and put install your fan there.

      +Paperclown it's depends on how many clients that you use the server at once. If you use many computer at once on steam game, you probably will get a slow loading speed. You can use raid controller to speed up the read speed. And you should also uses ethernet cable 5e or 6.

    Too boot off a USB Copy your boot file and put it on the usb, then restart and edit the bios to load the pc files from the usb.
