I'm so glad to see one of my other favorite YT's watch these videos. Much respect, Destin! By the way, you and your videos are a big part of why I left military service to pursue my engineering degree!
I just think this whole series of exploring other Christian denominations is awesome and educational. I'm a white Roman Catholic in Australia and I loved learning more about this church.
I love this pastor. Really appreciate his articulation of African American Worship and how suffering both are intimately involved with each other. Greetings from a Latino Catholic🖐🏼.
Even though I am Roman Catholic, I am familiar with this Church and proud it is located in Northern Alabama. Beautiful Church and very Historical. Welcome to the Bible Belt Matt!
I actually attend a historically African American Catholic Church in SC. Our motto is celebrating the genius of African American Christian spirituality. It's always amazing to experience the solemnity of a Catholic mass being interrupted by Gospel Hymns with clapping, shouting, and pure joy!
I am not Baptist but the Holy Spirit tells me that this Pastor is a good man of God. May his congregation will be blessed with wisdom, auspiciousness and peace.
I couldn't stop the tears from flowing the entire time I was watching this... To hear the surgical way in which he delivered the history of this church and people was so moving. And then on top of that to hear him say that he can look at his congregation and say, "I know God has been good to you!" You already know before this man preaches what His calling is. May we always remember the Lord's words, "I am the LORD thy God which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." - Ex. 20:2
I'm glad you feel the familiarity when you entered this church. As a Catholic who has traveled to other countries I have felt the same feeling. Thanks for sharing this church with us.
There's a historical black baptist church near my house where I grew up, and how tv shows or movies show gospel worship was an understatement here, they were also super friendly, I remember the pastor saying lets welcome all our white brothers and sisters here today, and everyone came up to say hello, great church and great video Matt!
Matt, I LOVE your humble heart to learn and the way you facilitate such cordial and thoughtful conversations! You make space for different expressions of the Body of Christ to understand one another better and help bring us together. I always look forward to your content. :-)
“Very.. very.. static” 😂 love how Pastor Daylan Wood answered and shed light on the dynamic of worship. And.. thank you Matt for giving the world a window into the nuances of us Jesus followers.
I was raised Baptist and EVERYTHING this Pastor talked about is 100% true about the Baptist church. I haven't been to a Baptist church in probably over 20 years, but I remember absolutely everything he talked about. 💯
Matt, I can't explain why, but these videos examining all the expressions of faith feel so very important to me. My wife grew up in the high church, I grew up in the "low" church, and this series gives me such an important perspective...I can't explain, but please keep going. I love this! Blessings!
when you walked in, it was a blast from the past for me. I sang in a Baptist Church choir for three years when i was in nursing school. Nice Catholic girl in the Baptist church........ i loved it there. Made many friends and learned so much. It was where I learned about "coffee hour" after service and was so glad when the Catholic church started doing that. It just was such wonderful fellowship. :)
So good! I loved how he talked about how context shapes our worship experience. I continue to enjoy each of these videos as they come out. Thanks for all that you're doing!
It's a beautiful thing to see the diversity within Catholicism: not in doctrine, but in Liturgy and disciplines, which inherently reflect those doctrines. Lex Orandi lex Credendi. I would love for Matt to visit a Latin Catholic Church (LOVE the TLM and oftentimes the traditional Priests are better to talk to than others). Maybe an *FSSP or ICKSP parish*!
I wish that youtube had a "love" button as well as a "like" button, this was a really good one and the energy between you two was apparent! Praise God!
I loved that you let him speak and explain and listened to him. Pastor Daylan is such a compelling speaker and I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the conversation.
Thank you for this one. I grew up in a Independent Baptist Chuch where my dad is the Pastor. Our church is very Missionary centered. I look forward to seeing the next one.
This was so good, and now I'm excited for part 2, but I have to ask about part 2 to the last video with the RC theologian...any ETA? I found it very intriguing.
I love the heart of this pastor. He helped me realize. The suffering slaves went through. It's a shame all of that took place. Love your work in touring the different face. It's insightful. When will you tour an Assembly of God Church?
When I was visiting Sweden, the family that was hosting us mentioned "the new church" as we were driving by. Then, they mentioned that it was built in 1850-something. ^__^
In Syria there's a church (still operational) that was built prior to 325 AD. Europe isn't special. America is a young nation, give her time and she'll have old churches.
Wonderful video, Matt. Especially interesting to me as just three weeks ago I joined a southern Baptist Church in Kentucky. And was baptized in that church two weeks ago. I look forward to your follow up videos with this pastor.
I spent several years in an African-American church. The songs are so beautiful, they haunt me to this day. They are so direct and powerful, compared to the honestly rather wishy-washy worship songs which are popular today.
FYI; There are already two parts uploaded for the RC visit. Check Matt's web page. There's also a link in the comments of each RC video to the other one.
I never cease to find comfort in these videos - such a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the people online trying to make a name for themselves by tearing others down. I have learned a lot from your example, I pray others do as well.
I grew up in a white, Southern Baptist church. But my dad and I were involved with a monthly mens prayer meeting that was just black Missionary Baptist churches. Some of my most cherished church memories are from prayer meetings in little black country churches. And some of my most respected ministers are African-American Baptist preachers. This video brings back a lot of good memories ❤️❤️
You're always interested and engaged in these videos, but I haven't seen you this seemingly surprised and enthused since the Episcopal Church episode. This pastor is a sharp dude! The unfolding historical and social context for style of worship makes a lot more sense to me now. Thanks for this series!
As a life long conservative Lutheran with many Evangelical friends I greatly appreciate your integrity and approach to listen and understand different denominational faiths. I hope it is an inspiration to others to understand and accept each other as friends in Christ.
Hey glad you made it down our way!! Alabama is happy to host you :) when do you think you’ll make your way to a Pentecostal Church or other charismatic type denomination? It would be fun to watch what happens
i think this is more about culture. Christians are bound together by salvation from original sin. But this church has a history of freed slaves which would add another level onto that.
This video made me realized the importance of history and experience from the past. It influence the way of worship and our approach to God. I'm a Catholic from Poland and as you propably know we've had a tough history (II WW, Soviet occupation etc.) and it has huge impact on understanding and importanc of religion in my country. Thanks for the video and greatings form Poland!😃
Pastor Daylan was great! I can't wait to see the rest of these. With a Baptist mother and a Missionary Alliance father, this feels very akin to my growing up as well.
I really enjoy your videos of different denominations. It has helped me personally to come closer to God by seeing the different approach to worshipping him.
I've been in a lot of Missionary Baptist churches, but I've never heard the song "Take Me to the Water." Us white Missionary Baptists sing "Shall We Gather at the River."
Another great video, Matt! I’m LCMS and I liked the way you showed us bits of the worship service at the Lutheran church. I’d enjoy seeing you do the same for every church you visit. Christian worship is as diverse as a Christian theology. (duh, obviously) Keep up the great work and Peace be with you!
I am from Birmingham, Alabama, and I have had the honor to visit 16th Street Baptist Church. It is a masterpiece of a church, and it was an amazing experience. Understanding how the Church reacted to some of the rougher points of history is so important and incredible.
Love this channel. Love this pastor! My paternal grandfather and great grandfather were Baptist ministers. My maternal side was predominantly Catholic and Lutheran but further back on my moms side, my roots are from Louisiana and Baptist. I love seeing all the ways we can love Jesus. Just beautiful! I’m trying to find a church that feels like home and this channel is a great compass. I’m seeking. I know I’ll find it. Thank you. Bless you, brother.
Thank youuuu!!!!🙏🏼 I absolutely love those videos that you show and talk about other Churches! It’s so important for us all. It truly is... in so many aspects. And we don’t have to agree with some of the differences, but we have to come with an open heart to love and respect our brothers in Christ. JESUS loves them all also, just as HE loves us. You are humble to see that you can study more about certain subject after talking with some of other churches’s leaders... this is very humbling and wise my friend! Amen! GOD will only bless you bringing HIS Truth. Please, continue doing more of these videos, it has been so edifying for me! Thank you soooo much! God bless you and your family!!!!🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
Hi Matt, I LOVE your series! I wasn't sure where to go to suggest a visit with a denomination. I am very interested in the Messianic Jews, or the Jews for Jesus movements and how they worship and see things and the challenges they face. They are believers yet are still Jewish? Would they be open to sharing with you what they are about? Thank you for what you're doing. Also, when do we get to hear YOUR story? God bless!
I was raised in the Presbyterian Church USA, in my confirmation class the teacher once joked that "as Presbyterians the most important goal of service is to remind you of your relationship with Jesus, second is getting you out of service fast enough to get to the good restaurants before the Baptists."
I love the analogy given by this pastor about the worship experience for the choir. How they developed very expressive worship due to the prayers of deliverance from slavery. A horrible and tragic time in African American history. But as white Christians should our worship experience be any different? No we don’t have the same experience of being deliver from slavery from men but, we have the the deliverance from the slavery of satan. We should rejoice with everything in us. Yes slavery is beyond any thing we can imagine if we were not a pert of that experience. But, being delivered from the slavery of satan is an eternal life changing experience. And we should rejoice with everything in us! I don’t won’t the rocks to cry out for me! We can truly learn a lot from the African American church about truly worshiping God the way I think he expects us to worship him. I have great respect for this pastor. God bless you and your ministry!
"Above all that, around all that, beneath all that..." that moment. An extraordinary summarizing the evils that befalls the Christian which does nothing to hinder the securing of the faithful by Christ. Love this.
Great video as always Matt, I really love this entire series. You have done a great job reaching across what appear to be dividing lines looking for understanding and common ground. And I enjoy hte history. Also, being from Georgia it was great to hear the perspective of an African American pastor. Looking forward to your next video.
Is so nice to meet two man share faith and so much history those historicals churches are a contribution to the historical contribution to the nation. God bless the baptist church. Amen
Hey Matt! I love these kind of videos. I like how you are not afraid to cross denominational lines and have honest discussions with those other churches.
easily, without doubt, the most profound description of the African American worship experience I have ever heard. Thank you Pastor and thanks for sharing these videos.
Christ is risen. + From a former Baptist, a PK : "The best thing about Baptist are the Wed night suppers." -- Phil Abraham. This video, like others in the series, is terrific. Reminded me of even more reasons to be grateful for growing up Baptist. (But i really needed the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist so I'm a Catholic Christian these days.). Peace, shalom, success in your endeavors, Matt. amen +
I'm part of the southern baptist convention here in northern California and this church and my church are 99.99% similar. We also have the same exact baptism pool.
Matt, once again a great and informative video. Thanks for your beautiful ministry of introducing us to some of our brothers and sisters in Christ, about whom we may not have known much. Keep up the good work. Blessings.
Matt, delightful as always. Like you, this very familiar. My father pastored several old established mainline Protestant churches as I grew up. As a Catholic now I always feel at home wherever the Gospel is proclaimed. Love this guy! I've noticed you are featuring ONLY churches that try to follow Scripture (as each understands it). I would gladly pray with any of those brothers. Have you considered visiting an oldline denomination? IMHO most of these have lost the Gospel and preach gay marriage, universalism, and other rot. Still, they have plenty of real Christians in them, despite the official heresy of their denominational leadership. (I follow a podcast with an ELCA Pastor who is rock solid orthodox guy despite where God has called him). It might be illuminating. But again. Another good church you've found. Well done 👍
I love these videos, but this one in particular stands out to me for all the same reasons you listed in the outro. I came from a Baptist Church in New England, with my dad as the pastor, and all of the things you were identifying, were resonating with me as well. I would love to visit that church someday.
Daylan is awesome.
I'm so glad to see one of my other favorite YT's watch these videos. Much respect, Destin! By the way, you and your videos are a big part of why I left military service to pursue my engineering degree!

@@rawhides Destin and Matt produce the excellent No Dumb Questions podcast together. It's as fabulous as you might imagine.
He should join the podcast 😉

Joshua Howard I agree! I like delving into the Word, too. But, learning about the different denominations/churches is extraordinary!
It's definitely cool to see the history at an individual level of a Church.
They are certainly interesting. I really enjoy them.
I just think this whole series of exploring other Christian denominations is awesome and educational. I'm a white Roman Catholic in Australia and I loved learning more about this church.
Same as a black Anglican from Canada I love learning about how others worship and learning about their journeys.
Hello i am a white Roman Catholic from Australia from 4 years in the future.
I really like this pastor! I kinda wanna see what a Sunday worship at this church looks like
Yea I bet he is very energetic during his sermons!
Me too
I soooo wanna hear that choir
Same!!!!!
I love this pastor. Really appreciate his articulation of African American Worship and how suffering both are intimately involved with each other. Greetings from a Latino Catholic🖐🏼.
As an Orthodox Christian I have visited Orthodox churches in Africa. The liturgy there also reflects African culture which is much more animated

Super super old church - 150 years old! In Europe thats a recently built building.

America has only been around for 250 years.

I'm part of the southern baptist convention here in northern California and this church and my church are 99.99% similar. We also have the same exact baptism pool.
Matt, keep up the good job! Peace of Christ!
I love that you are sharing there is more that unites us than divides us! God bless you
Every first Sunday of the month during Communion we said the "Having been led as we believe...." It is like the Baptists Apostles Creed
This is the best you’ve done Matt...maybe it’s because, it’s clear that, for this man (and thus his gathering), it’s all about Jesus. Thanks
I love the denominational discussion videos!
