Shortly after i watched you're first video visiting a Catholic Church, i enrolled in rcia. A year later I was baptized and confirmed. You sent me on one heck of a journey my guy.
I grew up Baptist, I'm nearly done with RCIA and will be having my first Holy Communion this May. I chose St. Therese as my Confirmation saint (or rather she picked me). This channel was a huge factor in me coming back to faith, and I'm truly thankful for all that Matt has done and is continuing to do.
I'm getting confirmed a Catholic on Pentecost Sunday, Lord willing. What a gorgeous church! I've visited theatres in the round when I was in England enjoying Shakespeare...this building plan really makes so much sense for people to be able to see what's going on at the altar during mass.

Therese of Lisieux (aka Therese of the Child Jesus or "The Little Flower") is also a "Doctor of the Church" so she is a big deal in the Catholic Church, and has been a hero of mine ever since my sons went to visit Lisieux in France as part of their World Youth Day pilgrimage in 2005. I had never heard of her before then, but ever since then she, and her amazing family, continue to inspire me. They are truly inspirational models of Christianity - Google them. You should have stayed for the funeral. The funeral Mass is one of the most hope-filled events in anyone’s experience. The depth of prayer, grace, and love is palpable.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments about our unique Church. It was named after St. Therese of Lisieux the year she was canonized, probably making it the first Parish named in her honor. The parish was formed in 1926. The Church was not completed until 1947.
Most Catholics I know are Catholic in Name Only as my mom says. We're Protestant but she came from a Catholic family. She said she learned more about Catholicism from my dad studying at Bible College than she ever did at home. And I find that true with a lot of Catholics here who say they don't know much about their faith. Which is too bad. Everyone should know the specifics of their denomination. We may worship in different ways; but, we all love the same God.

@@MrPeach1 Bishop Barron is another one. Just commenting on how education is important in any denomination. My mom said when she learned what Catholicism was about she decided to become Protestant because she disagreed theologically with it. But she still says that she wished she had the education growing up so that she could make that choice earlier.

Catholic parishes have a great program called RCIA, which has classes that teach people more about the Catholic faith, and are open to everyone. Maybe you'd enjoy checking it out. The way you sensitively approach difficult topics with people who see things and do church differently is inspiring and I'm grateful for the example of respectful disagreement and curiosity.
This makes a good, helpful introduction to Catholic churches and practices for outsiders. Even for non-Catholics, reading the writings of Therese, the Little Flower, would prove interesting and instructive. I'm Protestant, but I can respect what saints like Therese have contributed to Christianity. If I remember, one of the large churches at Lourdes has been built in this round style, and the church of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland is similar. I've seen others on TV, as well.
Love the show Matt. Brotherhood and understanding. As a Catholic I am notably impressed and hope that you are brought closer to God by learning about faith.
I've noticed the same with several relatives, friends of our family & parishioners who left to search elsewhere (other churches). I even recall a parishioner saying at a prayer meeting that her late grandmother, a cradle Catholic turned passionate Pentecostal, suddenly felt called to return "home" in the years before she passed, and made arrangements to have a Catholic funeral.
@@isaiah3872 A cradle Catholic, my first Protestant funeral was a complete mystery to me. Everyone was so solemn and sad. My second, a different denomination was the opposite as everyone was clapping and laughing. Catholics acknowledge the sadness of our loss, have no eulogies, rather focus on God's love and forgiveness, and hope of eternal life for us all.
Another great video. I specially appreciate that you seem to be a bit more open about your own convictions during the dialogue, always respectful an graciously. One additional catholic observation: we consider baptism much more a grace from God and fruit of his own initiative and only secondarily a personal response to his initiative.

Great video and Father was good at explaining. Others have recommended learning more about St. Thérèse of Lisieux and I’ll echo that. Her autobiography “Story of a Soul” is great.

Pronounced Terez...St Therese my namesake the little flower cause she said we don't have to do big grand things to be pleasing to God...like the little flowers in the fields we can do small things with love pleasing to God...a hug there, a smile helping others. She was French...St Therese of Lisieux France and she was made a Doctor of the Church.

If you explained the concept of a church like this to me, I would think it's kind of bizarre and modern. But seeing the way it's executed-- it's so beautiful and traditional. Right on
there are a lot of ancient round churches in Europe. In Italy you find S. Vitale in Ravenna (VI century) or S. Costanza (IV century) and S. Stefano Rotondo in Rome (V century) that were built as round churches on purpose unlike the Pantheon that originally was a pagan temple. I think there were a number of reasons: the shape of the Anastasis in Jerusalem, that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the perfection of the circle that reminds to God... Usually a round or octogonal shape was used in Roman funerary architecture and Christians took those shape for their martyria. I hope I was clear enough, English isn't my mothertongue
This church reminds me of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak, Michigan. That Basilica is also named after Saint Therese of Lisieux.
My "Confirmation Name" is Therese' from St. Therese' "The Little Flower". She is such a WONDERFUL SAINT, AND EXAMPLE TO ALL!!!! And yes, it's a LOVELY CHURCH "BEFITTING" of St. Therese'.
This is the first circle church in the Americas I have seen that does not look bland. It has a proper sanctuary and traditional look. I actually like it

So enjoyed seeing this multiple chapel Catholic church. Thankyou. Only in Lourdes, France have I seen this, which is a Basilica. One never meets a priest whom wants to be seen as special. Its always Christ they hold upon the Alter within consecration that raises their humility.
Fun fact: Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower actually dressed up as Joan of Arc (who wasn't a canonised saint at the time) for a play they organised in the convent. There are photos where she is dressed up, you can google it.

I think a good perspective on praying for the dead is that though we experience life "in time," sequentially, that does not bind God to judge the soul of the person sequentially since God is out of time, omnipresent, so just because "in time" we are praying on behalf of that person after their death "in time," that does not mean God is somehow forced to go "well, sorry, that prayer got to me too late." Because we exist in time we do something does matter, however, that does not mean that God can't choose to act outside of the rules of existence imposed on us, otherwise we would be force to deny the possibility of miracles.
Baldocchino (canopy over the altar) also alludes to the wedding theology in the Scriptures, esp. the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in Revelation. The altar is where Christ lays down his life for his Bride, the Church. The altar becomes the marriage bed.
I looked at their website and noticed they offer a Traditional Latin Mass. In your tour of Catholicism have you visited a Traditional (FSSP or ICKSP) church and dove into the older architecture and liturgy?
Hey Matt, thank you for your openness to discussing Catholicism. Regarding the prayers for the dead, another aspect to Catholic theology on this subject is that God wants us to pray for each other and also God will apply every prayer said for a person at the time of their judgment. As a former Protestant, I get how this doctrine might be confusing - but we must understand that God exists completely out of the human constraints of space and time and knows every prayer that will be said for a person, regardless of if their body has died on Earth. So if you were to pray for your deceased great-great-great-great grandmother, God would hear that prayer as He is not constrained by human time and knows every prayer that is said for a person regardless of if they died already on Earth. God knows all things and time/space/are all subject to his existence as they only exist because of Him. I hope that this helps. Also, as a suggestion I see you are spending time in St Louis. I strongly suggest a visit to St Francis De Sales Church in St Louis. It is astounding beautiful Church and worth a video. It will also shine a light on Traditional Catholicism and the priests of the Institute of Christ the King, which are great. I hope you get the chance to do that. I will pray for you, Matt. God Bless.
Great explanation of praying for the dead! On another note, I once visited a lovely, little church near the Arch. It was covered in blue tile on the inside, walls and ceiling. Would you happen to know the name of the church?
I think it's more of a difference in theological interpretation there. So us Protestants view it as only Christ can be the intercedent for us as he sacrificed himself for us and his blood covers us. Some denominations see praying to the dead as putting them an an equal footing with God and therefore sacreligious. Just wanted to explain where the differences come from. No shade.
@@annfrost3323 I've spoken to many Catholics that say they pray to the dead instead of God, stating they believe their ancestors will intercede with God for them. My grandmother was one.
When an atheist asks why believe in God, Pascal’s wager comes to mind. When a Protestant asks why believe in Purgatory, well I take the same view point. If it does not exist, ok, no problem, my prayers won’t do anything, but what if it does exist and the deceased person is in it and needs of our prayers? Now you may say, “it is not in the Bible”, again, we can reason it as we can reason God to an atheist. God bless!!

I love your videos about the Catholic Church! As a lifelong Catholic, it's so great to see Protestants who are curious and so respectful about the Faith. Catholic parishes have a great program called RCIA, which has classes that teach people more about the Catholic faith, and are open to everyone. Maybe you'd enjoy checking it out. This makes a good, helpful introduction to Catholic churches and practices for outsiders. Even for non-Catholics, reading the writings of Therese, the Little Flower, would prove interesting and instructive. I'm Protestant, but I can respect what saints like Therese have contributed to Christianity. If I remember, one of the large churches at Lourdes has been built in this round style, and the church of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland is similar. I've seen others on TV, as well.

one of my friends had left the church and he and his wife came back after attending a funeral for his wife's brother. I guess we get funerals right.
My wife converted to Catholicism after attending my Dad's funeral mass in 2020. It happens! Faith on fire!
I've noticed the same with several relatives, friends of our family & parishioners who left to search elsewhere (other churches). I even recall a parishioner saying at a prayer meeting that her late grandmother, a cradle Catholic turned passionate Pentecostal, suddenly felt called to return "home" in the years before she passed, and made arrangements to have a Catholic funeral.
@@isaiah3872 A cradle Catholic, my first Protestant funeral was a complete mystery to me. Everyone was so solemn and sad. My second, a different denomination was the opposite as everyone was clapping and laughing. Catholics acknowledge the sadness of our loss, have no eulogies, rather focus on God's love and forgiveness, and hope of eternal life for us all.
Another great video. I specially appreciate that you seem to be a bit more open about your own convictions during the dialogue, always respectful an graciously. One additional catholic observation: we consider baptism much more a grace from God and fruit of his own initiative and only secondarily a personal response to his initiative.

What a nice little visit. The church grounds and architecture were beautiful. Fr. Herzog was gentle and informative. When he asked if that if that burned was levity in a somber moment taking place in that church.

Thanks for the great video. I’ve watched you for years and this is my neighborhood parish, but I learned a thing or two, too. There is a large project going on to reduce and consolidate the many parishes in St. Louis. I pray our neighborhood will be able to worship here for another 100 years.

Pronounced Terez...St Therese my namesake the little flower cause she said we don't have to do big grand things to be pleasing to God...like the little flowers in the fields we can do small things with love pleasing to God...a hug there, a smile helping others. She was French...St Therese of Lisieux France and she was made a Doctor of the Church.

If you explained the concept of a church like this to me, I would think it's kind of bizarre and modern. But seeing the way it's executed-- it's so beautiful and traditional. Right on
There's one in Rome which was built before Christianity and is still in use.
there are a lot of ancient round churches in Europe. In Italy you find S. Vitale in Ravenna (VI century) or S. Costanza (IV century) and S. Stefano Rotondo in Rome (V century) that were built as round churches on purpose unlike the Pantheon that originally was a pagan temple. I think there were a number of reasons: the shape of the Anastasis in Jerusalem, that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the perfection of the circle that reminds to God... Usually a round or octogonal shape was used in Roman funerary architecture and Christians took those shape for their martyria. I hope I was clear enough, English isn't my mothertongue
This church reminds me of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak, Michigan. That Basilica is also named after Saint Therese of Lisieux.
I've been in that church. It's just beautiful, and such a beautiful message in architecture .

In Royal Oak, MI there is Church named the Shrine of the Little Flower and has the "round" set up as well. Beautiful church!!

Baldichinos are amazing, here in England we have Cathedrals like St Pauls (built Anglican) with one over the high alter.

One never meets a priest whom wants to be seen as special. Its always Christ they hold upon the Alter within consecration that raises their humility.

Fun fact: Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower actually dressed up as Joan of Arc (who wasn't a canonised saint at the time) for a play they organised in the convent. There are photos where she is dressed up, you can google it.

I think a good perspective on praying for the dead is that though we experience life "in time," sequentially, that does not bind God to judge the soul of the person sequentially since God is out of time, omnipresent, so just because "in time" we are praying on behalf of that person after their death "in time," that does not mean God is somehow forced to go "well, sorry, that prayer got to me too late." Because we exist in time we do something does matter, however, that does not mean that God can't choose to act outside of the rules of existence imposed on us, otherwise we would be force to deny the possibility of miracles.
Baldocchino (canopy over the altar) also alludes to the wedding theology in the Scriptures, esp. the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in Revelation. The altar is where Christ lays down his life for his Bride, the Church. The altar becomes the marriage bed.

Hey Matt, thank you for your openness to discussing Catholicism. Regarding the prayers for the dead, another aspect to Catholic theology on this subject is that God wants us to pray for each other and also God will apply every prayer said for a person at the time of their judgment. As a former Protestant, I get how this doctrine might be confusing - but we must understand that God exists completely out of the human constraints of space and time and knows every prayer that will be said for a person, regardless of if their body has died on Earth. So if you were to pray for your deceased great-great-great-great grandmother, God would hear that prayer as He is not constrained by human time and knows every prayer that is said for a person regardless of if they died already on Earth. God knows all things and time/space/are all subject to his existence as they only exist because of Him. I hope that this helps.
Also, as a suggestion I see you are spending time in St Louis. I strongly suggest a visit to St Francis De Sales Church in St Louis. It is astounding beautiful Church and worth a video. It will also shine a light on Traditional Catholicism and the priests of the Institute of Christ the King, which are great. I hope you get the chance to do that. I will pray for you, Matt. God Bless.
Great explanation of praying for the dead! On another note, I once visited a lovely, little church near the Arch. It was covered in blue tile on the inside, walls and ceiling. Would you happen to know the name of the church?
I think it's more of a difference in theological interpretation there. So us Protestants view it as only
Christ can be the intercedent for us as he sacrificed himself for us and his blood covers us. Some denominations see praying to the dead as putting them an an equal footing with God and therefore sacreligious. Just wanted to explain where the differences come from. No shade.
@@mish375 wait. One is not praying to the deceased. You pray to God for compassion for the soul of the deceased.
@@annfrost3323 I've spoken to many Catholics that say they pray to the dead instead of God, stating they believe their ancestors will intercede with God for them. My grandmother was one.

When an atheist asks why believe in God, Pascal’s wager comes to mind. When a Protestant asks why believe in Purgatory, well I take the same view point. If it does not exist, ok, no problem, my prayers won’t do anything, but what if it does exist and the deceased person is in it and needs of our prayers? Now you may say, “it is not in the Bible”, again, we can reason it as we can reason God to an atheist. God bless!!
