A Protestant Visits a Catholic Church in the Round (and Stumbles Upon a Catholic Funeral)

- I figured we'd need to put things off when I showed up at Little Flower Catholic Church and discovered they were setting up for a funeral, but Fr. Herzog (the priest there) insisted this was part of the life of the church and that we should see it. This is a unique and beautiful church and I'm grateful for the chance to get a glimpse at how Catholicism works at the end of life.

I'm getting confirmed a Catholic on Pentecost Sunday, Lord willing. What a gorgeous church! I've visited theatres in the round when I was in England enjoying Shakespeare...this building plan really makes so much sense for people to be able to see what's going on at the altar during mass.

I grew up Baptist, I'm nearly done with RCIA and will be having my first Holy Communion this May. I chose St. Therese as my Confirmation saint (or rather she picked me). This channel was a huge factor in me coming back to faith, and I'm truly thankful for all that Matt has done and is continuing to do.

I just moved to Pendleton myself and my son is going to St. Joseph’s. Downtown had a great Catholic Church.

Happy Easter, y'all. FYI Many of the early Masses were celebrated over the remains of deceased (often martyred) faithful. The funeral Mass is very appropriate!

Matt, I invite you to do some light reading about the Little Flower. She profoundly impacted me personally and the Church overall. To the point that, because of her unique insights about the love for Christ in action, she is considered a "Doctor of the Church". I would love to hear your thoughts about her sometime. Therese of Lisieux (aka Therese of the Child Jesus or "The Little Flower") is also a "Doctor of the Church" so she is a big deal in the Catholic Church, and has been a hero of mine ever since my sons went to visit Lisieux in France as part of their World Youth Day pilgrimage in 2005. I had never heard of her before then, but ever since then she, and her amazing family, continue to inspire me. They are truly inspirational models of Christianity - Google them. Loving the channel - looking forward to the next one. Happy Easter †

Most Catholics I know are Catholic in Name Only as my mom says. We're Protestant but she came from a Catholic family. She said she learned more about Catholicism from my dad studying at Bible College than she ever did at home. And I find that true with a lot of Catholics here who say they don't know much about their faith. Which is too bad. Everyone should know the specifics of their denomination. We may worship in different ways; but, we all love the same God.

@@MrPeach1 Bishop Barron is another one. Just commenting on how education is important in any denomination. My mom said when she learned what Catholicism was about she decided to become Protestant because she disagreed theologically with it. But she still says that she wished she had the education growing up so that she could make that choice earlier.
@@mish375 Well to be fair to your mother she only learned about Catholicism through your Dad who isn't even Catholic...which is like saying, once I heard about my family from my family's enemies I decided to disown them. If you think Catholics don't know their own faith, which is true, you should see how badly Protestants mischaracterize it. Never met a single Protestant who understands Catholicism.

one of my friends had left the church and he and his wife came back after attending a funeral for his wife's brother. I guess we get funerals right.
My wife converted to Catholicism after attending my Dad's funeral mass in 2020. It happens! Faith on fire!
I've noticed the same with several relatives, friends of our family & parishioners who left to search elsewhere (other churches). I even recall a parishioner saying at a prayer meeting that her late grandmother, a cradle Catholic turned passionate Pentecostal, suddenly felt called to return "home" in the years before she passed, and made arrangements to have a Catholic funeral.
Thank you all for the wonderful comments about our unique Church. It was named after St. Therese of Lisieux the year she was canonized, probably making it the first Parish named in her honor. The parish was formed in 1926. The Church was not completed until 1947.

This makes a good, helpful introduction to Catholic churches and practices for outsiders. Even for non-Catholics, reading the writings of Therese, the Little Flower, would prove interesting and instructive. I'm Protestant, but I can respect what saints like Therese have contributed to Christianity. If I remember, one of the large churches at Lourdes has been built in this round style, and the church of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland is similar. I've seen others on TV, as well.

Pronounced Terez...St Therese my namesake the little flower cause she said we don't have to do big grand things to be pleasing to God...like the little flowers in the fields we can do small things with love pleasing to God...a hug there, a smile helping others. She was French...St Therese of Lisieux France and she was made a Doctor of the Church.

That is such a beautiful church with a wonderful Priest. As a Catholic who returned to her faith 3 years ago I ask you to try and attend a Traditional Latin Mass to see the full richness of the faith. Another great video. I specially appreciate that you seem to be a bit more open about your own convictions during the dialogue, always respectful an graciously. One additional catholic observation: we consider baptism much more a grace from God and fruit of his own initiative and only secondarily a personal response to his initiative.

What a nice little visit. The church grounds and architecture were beautiful. Fr. Herzog was gentle and informative. When he asked if that if that burned was levity in a somber moment taking place in that church.
If you’re curious, the Eastern Churches also pray for the departed, who they believe are in/passing through an intermediate state of existence.
You were very respectful and even your question in relation to purgatory was non confrontational where it so easily could've been. I'm a convert (from protestant to catholic) so I understand your perspective completely. There is something beautiful and peaceful about catholic churches though and the incense is worth the price of admission alone

There's one in Rome which was built before Christianity and is still in use.
there are a lot of ancient round churches in Europe. In Italy you find S. Vitale in Ravenna (VI century) or S. Costanza (IV century) and S. Stefano Rotondo in Rome (V century) that were built as round churches on purpose unlike the Pantheon that originally was a pagan temple. I think there were a number of reasons: the shape of the Anastasis in Jerusalem, that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the perfection of the circle that reminds to God... Usually a round or octogonal shape was used in Roman funerary architecture and Christians took those shape for their martyria. I hope I was clear enough, English isn't my mothertongue

Fun fact: Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower actually dressed up as Joan of Arc (who wasn't a canonised saint at the time) for a play they organised in the convent. There are photos where she is dressed up, you can google it.
Thanks for the great video. I’ve watched you for years and this is my neighborhood parish, but I learned a thing or two, too. There is a large project going on to reduce and consolidate the many parishes in St. Louis. I pray our neighborhood will be able to worship here for another 100 years.

We Catholics pray for the reunion of all Christians through Christ’s Holy Catholic Church. I converted 19 years ago from Protestantism and surrendered in 2020, meaning I am really trying hard to fight my own concupiscente nature.😮

This church reminds me of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak, Michigan. That Basilica is also named after Saint Therese of Lisieux.

A wake is typically a less formal event than a funeral. There isn't really a ceremony where everyone sits down together. The family will typically be seated or standing by the casket as people come through to give their condolences. It's very open, too. They are usually a few hours long, and people come through at different times. Some people will come through for 5 minutes to give condolences. Others will stay the whole time.
I've never been to a wake inside of a church, though. Not sure if they are much different there.
At some point there is a short prayer service called the Vigil consisting of Scripture readings and prayers for the deceased and mourners or in some places, the rosary.

I just want to say that you're channel was my first relook back into Christianity. I wasn't raised Christian but was baptized catholic. I even got my communion but stopped after that and was dragged into the Jehova's Witness. I swear they are the instrument of the devil, I have never felt more further from god than when I was around them. I didn't get baptized but my father did so my goal is to help drag my father back into the light of the lord. He disagrees with their doctrines and is just on the cusp of leaving and I think the lord placed me at this time and place. If (by the power of the holy spirit) I can drag him out of that organization it will be my testimony. Also I am still deciding my denomination and would love to here all your recommendations. Seems like your already basically in the Catholic church. I recommend go to confession, then start receiving holy communion again, and then ask about receiving the sacrament of confirmation. Thats just my opinion though.
You are already baptized there is only one baptism. You just need to know the faith. Follow along the Cathechism is a year podcast by Fr. Mike here in youtube…🙏🏻

I think a good perspective on praying for the dead is that though we experience life "in time," sequentially, that does not bind God to judge the soul of the person sequentially since God is out of time, omnipresent, so just because "in time" we are praying on behalf of that person after their death "in time," that does not mean God is somehow forced to go "well, sorry, that prayer got to me too late." Because we exist in time we do something does matter, however, that does not mean that God can't choose to act outside of the rules of existence imposed on us, otherwise we would be force to deny the possibility of miracles.

Matt, that is a beautiful church, another beautiful church to visit is the Basilica of the immaculate conception in Washington DC. Just got back to Texas after my second visit there. It is absolutely breath taking in its beauty.

Vatican II didn’t say anything about removing altar rails or anything like that
6:00 rewatch this sections - its not about specifically removing the rail its about separating the church's "holy part" and people. Everything is Holy.
The original poster is correct: no where in Vatican II did it say “destroy the communion rails, destroy the High Altar, place the Eucharist off to the side in an unimportant place, let lay people run intro the altar to play priest and use their unconsecrated hands to falsely administer the Holy Eucharist, let lay people receive communion in their hand without kneeling, etc etc.”
With all due respect to the responder, that is an erroneous statement. The Altar IS a sacred place and should be treated as such. God has always ordained the Altar as a set apart sacred place. In the Old Testament, the Holy of Holies was where Gods presence appeared (the New Covenant fulfillment of this is the Real Presence of The Eucharist). The Holy of Holies was covered by a veil, and no one was allowed to enter except the High Priest, and even he would only enter once a year to offer the blood of Sacrifice and incense. The Sacrifice was offered by the Priest for himself and for the sins of the people. Well, Traditionally in Catholicism this is how we have always understood the Altar and the Mass. This understanding is preserved in Traditional Parishes (usually Latin Mass or Eastern Catholicism/Byzantine Rite). Lay people storming into the Sanctuary destroys this symbolism and downgrades the Altar from a Sacred Space of Sacrifice to God, to a normal place. It also diminishes the priesthood. In Eastern Catholicism, the icon wall is closed off during the consecration and lay people never go into the Sacred. This sort of reverence is important and must not be dismissed as something of “the past.”
Up until modern times (which has coincided with widespread loss of faith), lay people did not presume to enter the Altar. Now, lay people, in a spirit of pride, storm into the sanctuary and impose roles unto themselves that have had disastrous effects on the Church’s Liturgy. The fundamental problem with the modern desire (influenced by feminism and other modern sensibilities) to have lay people storming the altar, administering the Eucharist, or having a girl version of altar boys is a spirit of pride and presumption. For some people of course, it is ignorance, but regardless… it is undeniable that the Altar has been desacralized by the Hasty Reforms made in the 60s and 70s. The Church has existed for thousands of years (and even longer when you consider the Church’s lineage is the Old Testament). Only since the 1960s/1970s has it become common for lay people to go up to the altar and treat it like a play thing without reverence. The results of this are clearly disastrous and have been documented in full.
There must be a return to solemnity and reverence in the Mass as we must offer to God rightly ordered Worship. I say this with all due respect and no insult intended, but rather, I want to express how the Church has always understood the sacredness of the altar throughout its entire existence.
@@grant3287 Living in a specific period of time is OK to a point (because it is history and important to remember) but living on one specific tradition is too much importance in the past and not moving on (there are many points of tradition to learn from not just one small piece of history). I dont think God realllllly cares about an alter rail or not he is more concerned that you turn to Him (in whatever form that takes for you in the present stage of life). Don't YUCK someone else YUM because of your limited understanding (everyone is limited in understanding not a slam on you specifically)
My "Confirmation Name" is Therese' from St. Therese' "The Little Flower". She is such a WONDERFUL SAINT, AND EXAMPLE TO ALL!!!! And yes, it's a LOVELY CHURCH "BEFITTING" of St. Therese'.
