  • As the U.S. and Singapore commemorate 55 years of bilateral relations, we look at how this partnership has played a significant role in Singapore's growth and progress. Even as the economy boomed with American MNCs setting up shop here, Singapore also collaborated with the U.S. in security and defence matters. Analysts, observers, and politicians discuss how bilateral relations have grown from strength to strength.

    From this vedio it's safe to say although we are geopolitically neutral we are almost "ally like" to the US.
    Not treaty ally like NATO or others but a friends with benefits type.
    Not to mention like in the vedio
    They invest more than korea japan china india combined in singapore which many singaporeans either don't know or take for granted..

    Excellent documentary.. Indeed a tough line to straddle. But let's call a spade a spade. Singapore relations have always leaned towards the US, due to circumstance. The sole super power since 1945, with the most capital, innovation, and talent to deploy. How this changes over time as China increases its share of the global pie, remains to be seen. My only hope, as we enter this multi-polar global order, is that neither side gets too cocky, and takes a mis-step somewhere. Lasting words from the great man Lee Kuan Yew himself. But I'm an optimist at heart. Really excited with China's rise! Its transformation these past 20 years have been staggering. It'll be interesting to see how Chinese society morphs as it elevates itself to a full fledged knowledge based economy.. And I think we're already seeing these domestic shifts happening. But hey, it happens to all societies as it gets more wealthy.

We are the best among Asia, even more now than Hong Kong as I believed US company will be considering moving out of Hong Kong into Singapore.. It will happen as China are scrutinize listed company in Hong Kong and this is a signal that us investment company in Hong Kong have to find their other niche. Watch what China is doing to their Chinese company and from there, foreign company should learn something and change investment strategy. US and their company must watch and observe carefully and deeply the action of China but need to know and decipher the underlying rationale too..

    Singapore must also do need to do a balancing act not rubbing China on the wrong side while hobnobbing with US. As long as the US interests are well served ie., the US investments are safe there is no problem. US will standby Singapore.
    Otherwise China will beat Singapore into submission and China has a lot to gain in the process, Singapore offers a strategic foothold for China.
    That explains why Singapore is time again advocating US not to severe its relations with China. Without US protection Singapore will be won in a day or few days by China if war were to breakout.
    Singapore will have to carry on the balancing act for maintaining it stays quo or even for its mere survival at the extreme circumstances.

  • @johntango
    @johntango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have read all the posts & most of the replies.
    It is easier in most conversations & true to a certain extend to say that Singapore is neutral like Switzerland.
    However the fact is in financial documents & historical records that Switzerland while appearing to be neutral was not from onset of World War 2.
    Switzerland in fact cut a deal with Nazi Germany. Which is Germany agreement & promise not to invade or meddle with their politics. In return, Switzerland agreed to help Germany keep their pre-war & war time loot & spoils, mostly wealth & gold from the Jewish genocide and adjacent invaded countries like Poland.
    Over a decade or so, the United States Government recovered hundreds of billions from 3 noted Swiss Banks.
    Okay, assuming each have verified the above. Singapore is no different to want to avoid conflict like the Swiss during WW2. SG is too small like that one eyed former Indonesian President infamously said “Singapore is a tiny red dot”. True to the core.
    We are too small to be like Switzerland. Therefore we need to keep our independence and maintain our economy by working with many other countries, big & small to survive.
    Appearing neutral is always good for our diplomacy but in reality our ideology for being independent leans towards that of the free western societies.
    We trade in USD. Many contracts are in USD currency.
    Our troops trained & even stationed in many countries like Thailand, Brunei, Taiwan (rogue CCP province 😅), and Australia & even our commandos had a couple years stint in New Zealand back a decade or so ago. Now no longer there as per official press release from SAF (MINDEF). Too many data points to list here.
    The writing is on the wall. In an arm conflict especially involving the Americans, do we know where SAF & MINDEF stands? A rhetorical question 😃

      John Tango, In my opinion you are conflating Independent, Independence with Free Western Societies. History and global politics seem to reveal that these same free Western societies have had a long history of being colonial colonisers and enforcing post colonial Western finance, media and political hegemony at least upto the 1990s. I believe China itself wants to remain independent, having itself overthrown the colonial yolk in 1949 after 100 years of oppression by all the so called Liberal Democracies. Singapore needs not just to appear But Actually be Neutral and Independent. Like Switzerland, better to be a housekeeper of everybody's investments since we have cumulatively, more than 1.7 Trillion of it since 1965.

    • @johntango
      @johntango 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@khtay8731 I agree with you Mr KH Tay. Only difference I would say it is still going on well past the 1990s. Just a shift in how a group of ppl exploiting another demographic group of ppl.
      For SG, we too are exploiting the cheaper or cheapest labour to shore up our GDP. We get foreign investors to come to an place where much of the infrasturture namely the buildings & constructions are built by cheap foreign labour.
      Agreed with what you said that SG *should* be neutral & not just appear neutral. However, the is where our posts differs. I am saying is that Singapore is leaning towards the free west as an ally in many ways, not just economically, & militarily but culturally too. Sure we have our own distinct culture in the food we eat, how we speak, how we don our fashion, etcetera but I also observe the shift to American culture sadly but inevitable. For examples, we now accept spelling “colour” as “color”. And we used to file our personal income tax by 31st December, then IRAS got us to file by April 15th, finally it changed to April 18th. There are literally hundreds of unobvious but subtle changes from our post colonial years to that closer to the American model. We do not use to eat cheese but now even our local hawkers add commerical cheese into their recipe.

    In an electoral democracy where the one-person-one-vote policy is practiced honored, your chance of getting a good and effective president or any elected officials and hence cabinet members is a like throwing a dart in the dark, or even worse. No academic background or proven professional experience is needed in order to be a president of the USA.
    To get better presidential candidates (or any so-called elected officials), the US must change its political system, utterly.
    The candidate campaigning --> voters vote --> one candidate elected is the most idiotic political system in human history. I wonder who or what kind of sane mind could had invented such system?

    在 2016 年美國失常總統提倡美國優先及讓美國再次偉大政策,論美國提倡美國優先及讓美國再次偉大背後,反映美國人進行更自私自利政策,以犧牲別人利益鞏固美國全球霸權地位,全球政治體制能多元化發展,大家只能跟著美國走由美國人說了便算數,這樣美國政策符合大家利益嗎?現在有一個問題為什麼全世界各國要幫助美國人完全他們自私自利政策?到底其他國家及美國盟友得到什麼好處呢?如果美國進行政策以損害其他國家和美國盟友利益安全換來美國人自己安全大家是否要盲目支持美國呢?今天美國盟友英國、德國、法國、加拿大、日本、南韓、澳洲等,美國為了與中國打貿易戰打赢私利,斷威迫利誘這些奴才國家選邊站隊支持自己,因此美國叫牠坐牠不敢坐,美國叫牠吠牠不敢吠,美國叫牠咬牠不敢咬,這些奴才國家完全忘記自己是一個主權獨立自主國家,好幸加拿大、英國、澳洲甘願向美國壓力下跪叩頭屈服,完全是優秀奴才國家,只會向美國表明孝忠下跪叩頭屈服。今天美國為了征服全世界,首先選擇征服俄羅斯,然後打倒中國,所以美國斷挑撥離間威迫利誘你們這些奴才國家與俄國和中國搞軍事對抗和經濟制裁,可憐你們與俄羅斯和中國交往及做生意受影響,而美國乘機大賣武器賺你們金錢,其他國家佔據你們商業市場,你們軍費支出年年增加,最後經濟和軍事更加要依賴美國,逃出一輩子做美國奴才命運。如果不幸發生戰爭你們這些歐洲和亞洲奴才國家首先做美國替死鬼,事實最後吃虧是你們這些奴才國家。其實你們這些國家是有獨立自主選擇權利,需要事事跟著美國指揮棒跳舞,當美國老大與別國爭利益時候,總是叫你們這些奴才國家選邊站隊做馬前卒替死鬼,最後得益最大是美國老大,你們這些奴才國家得到什麼,精人出口,笨人出手
    歷來西方民族只信奉勝者為王,敗者為寇弱肉強食叢林理念,因此對「戰爭創造和平」理解也是勝者為王,敗者為寇思維。所以全世界人類有沒有東西吃,各人食物份量多少是由勝利者決定,如果聽教聽話給多一點點,聽教不聽話一點也沒有,順我者生,逆我者死。這是美國對待世界人類相處方式,完全自我為中心自私自利極權獨裁行徑。而中國人提倡「和平創造和平」理念,就是大家以和為貴要打架或吵嘴,假如存在任何矛盾和衝突都應該用和平方式解決,而且最重要大家不要砸爛大家飯碗。如果有任何吃的東西大家平均吃,只要大家努力合作是可以把蛋糕越造越大,大家蛋糕份數越分越多,吃蛋糕人越來越多,這是中國人提倡「人類命運共同體」全球人類生存理念。但美國官員說行,你們所有人只能順我者生,逆我者死,如果不聽從指示搞抹黑和制裁行動,甚至軍事唬嚇和侵略你,這就是美國民主政治騙子真面目。今天地球比喻為一艘破爛不堪木船在大海漂流著,而船底中央破了一個大洞,由於船上兩個中美船長因意見合發生嚴重矛盾,美國船長說船開去西,而中國船長說船開去東,由於兩人互相讓反方向划造成木船原地踏步。由於船中央底部破了一個大洞海水不斷涌入船艙,因此站在船中央一群人要把涌入船艙海水停潑出去才沉船。所以大家能隨便走動必須站在船中央平衡中美兩邊,如果造成一邊失平衡導致木船沉沒,現在全船人等待中美誰的持久力够才能走出沉船困局。但美國船長經常威迫利誘全船人幫忙他划船去東,如果好幸有人選擇錯誤幫忙美國抗中會導致木船隨時失平衡沉沒。所以大家想地球和人類滅亡,最佳選擇就是兩邊幫忙讓中美自行解決,這樣木船不會因失平衡沉沒,全船人類就安全
