Deng took pragmatic approach to a national level and that paved the way for the next 40 years of rapid development. Policies should serve the people, not the elites.

The people are not important to the regime. The people are rather seen as something that can be sacrificed purely historically. And it does not look like the regime cares what people think. Instead, the regime wants to silence people who have opinions that the regime does not like

This help me understand China better.
I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. Admiral Zheng He came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another.
When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire.
Then came the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victory was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium.
After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government:
    1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free.
    2. Make opium legal in China.
Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French, with supports from the US and Russia from behind, started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor.
In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance(Japan, Russia, Britain, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary). Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris.
In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone.
Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles.
Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies has transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from.
In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height.
For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China.
Everything China does is negatively reported.
They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor.
They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US.
They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US.
When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices:
    1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists.
    2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes.
China chose 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky.
    During the pandemic,
When China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman.
When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers.
When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated.
Western Media always have reasons to bash China.
Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good.
Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world.
They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars?
When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down.
The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad.
China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not buy looting the world.
I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong. Good luck China.

The Spanish Flu is named that way not because the origins of the virus were in Spain but because Spain was the only country actively reporting on the devastation being caused by it. The true origins of the virus are believed to be a US military base located in Kentucky. The cause being a jump from a swine influenza strain jumping to humans. The virus then began spreading as men were shipped out to fight during World War I, allowing it to establish major roots all over the world. It wasn’t until 1918,when the most infamous set of epidemics occurred, before it rose to such prominence.

Native Americans were subjected to many different forms of violence, all with the intention of destroying the community. In the late 1800s, blankets from smallpox patients were distributed to Native Americans in order to spread disease.

People tend to stop looking, when
they are happy with the evidence.
Looking further could spoil the story.
      -Shaune Huolohan
I think this is actually an amazing story that doesn’t get told enough at present (because too many people are too busy hating on China).
Normally when one person checks into hospital with pneumonia like symptoms and dies, you assume they have pneumonia.
When you get a half a dozen you think, ok, that was a weird coincidence.
Once you get up to a round dozen people start to think “something is going on here”.
But to make the jump from “something is going on here” to identifying a new and virulent pathogen is extremely hard. You don’t even know what you are looking for at that stage - all you know is that people are dying. Could be a virus, could be bacterial, could be poison, could be radiation - could be God damned anything. Even if you knew it was a virus (they didn’t) it is still maddeningly difficult to pin down because you are looking for something that nobody knows exists - there are no tests for this.
But the medical staffers at Wuhan had to channel their inner Gregory House MD and work out what it really was, and they did so in simply astonishing time (certainly when compared to past outbreaks of novel diseases).
In future years I am sure we will come to recognise and celebrate what they were able to achieve. But unfortunately in the toxic climate at present when everyone in China is ‘an enemy’ their remarkable work goes largely unheralded.
      -Colin Riegels
*This is my hypothesis. Take it with a grain of salt.
The timing and the location where covid-19 virus was detected is highly suspicious.
Firstly Wuhan been a city smack it a very central location in China will cause the virus to spread extremely fast.
Secondly the timing close to the largest migration period on earth(The Chinese spring festival) will further enhance the spread.
If the Chinese authorities had not lock down Wuhan fast the spread could be devastating. Kudos to them.
Further if Wuhan were to be the location where this virus originated it is perplexing why it haven't spread profusely to the rest of China while this virus have spread to all 4 corners of the world. Wuhan is not known to be the region where exotic meats and games are in fashion that would be Yunnan or even Guangdong.
All this made me deduced that this virus is planted by some parties with evil intentions to maximise effectiveness.
I hope someday the truth will be revealed.

@Chee Hong Lim: I think it is unintentionally released from Fort Detrick due to sloppy work. I bet CDC covered it up under the direction of their Commander-in-Chief. I speculate that SARS-co2 is not an approved agent to be kept on site. Congress has to approve all agents in level 4 labs.
      Watch these short videos.
The virus did not start in Wuhan. It started in Fairfax, VA which is about 50 miles from Fort Detrick. In the summer of 2019, CDC closed their level 4 lab for lapses in the ventilation system. They also retain SARS-CO-2 as one of their agents. Check out these videos and check Fort Detrick’s webpage.

@Room 1808 How much is the CIA paying you?
The United States does have a well-documented history of interfering and sometimes interrupting the workings of democracies elsewhere. It has occupied and intervened militarily in a whole swath of countries in the Caribbean and Latin America and fomented coups against democratically elected populists.
The most infamous episodes include the ousting of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953 - whose government was replaced by an authoritarian monarchy favorable to Washington - the removal and assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961, and the violent toppling of socialist Chilean President Salvador Allende, whose government was swept aside in 1973 by a military coup led by the ruthless Gen. Augusto Pinochet. (American dad made a episode on this one with the dancing dictator?)
The United States and Great Britain jointly organized false flag operations during the 1953 Iranian Coup. The aim of the operations carried out in the country was to deliberately undermine the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh had made the mistake of nationalizing Iran’s oil companies. This angered the US and the UK, who jointly decided to launch a series of bombing campaigns against mosques and prominent people that they then blamed on communists sympathetic to the government. Protests grew against Mossadegh, egged on by the CIA and MI6, and Mossadegh was eventually fired from his post by the Shah of Iran and placed under house arrest. He would stay there until his death in 1967. The US refused to admit any involvement in the overthrow of Mosaddegh until 2013.
‘Operation Northwoods’ was the name given to a proposed covert campaign by the CIA that would have seen acts of terrorism committed against targets and civilians in the United States that could then be blamed on Cuban operatives as a precursor to an invasion of Cuba and the removal of Fidel Castro. Northwoods was proposed to the then US president, John F. Kennedy, but he ultimately rejected the idea.
      www.history.co.uk/article/the-truth-about-false-flags-from-nazi-germany-to-the-vietnam-war
CIA involvement in coup 1965 is one great example on how the west took sides by supplying weapons, made propaganda and indirectly killed more than 3 million innocent lives. Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt person who supported the US. That's how US mining company 'freeport' got hold of indonesian biggest gold mine.

Declassified files outline US support for 1965 indonesian massacre - National Security Archive.
      -Jeff Lith
For decades, these actions were considered imperatives of the Cold War, part of a global struggle against the Soviet Union and its supposed leftist proxies. Its key participants included scheming diplomats like John Foster Dulles and Henry Kissinger, who advocated aggressive, covert policies to stanch the supposedly expanding threat of communism. Sometimes that agenda also explicitly converged with the interests of U.S. business: In 1954, Washington unseated Guatemala's left-wing president, Jacobo Arbenz, who had had the temerity to challenge the vast control of the United Fruit Co., a U.S. corporation, with agrarian laws that would be fairer to Guatemalan farmers. The CIA went on to install and back a series of right-wing dictatorships that brutalized the impoverished nation for almost half a century.
A young Che Guevara, who happened to be traveling through Guatemala in 1954, was deeply affected by Arbenz's overthrow. He later wrote to his mother that the events prompted him to leave “the path of reason” and would ground his conviction in the need for radical revolution over gradual political reform.
Aside from its instigation of coups and alliances with right-wing juntas, Washington sought to more subtly influence elections in all corners of the world. And so did Moscow. Political scientist Dov Levin calculates that the “two powers intervened in 117 elections around the world from 1946 to 2000 - an average of once in every nine competitive elections.”
In the late 1940s, the newly established CIA cut its teeth in Western Europe, pushing back against some of the continent's most influential leftist parties and labor unions. In 1948, the United States propped up Italy's centrist Christian Democrats and helped ensure their electoral victory against a leftist coalition, anchored by one of the most powerful communist parties in Europe. CIA operatives gave millions of dollars to their Italian allies and helped orchestrate what was then an unprecedented, clandestine propaganda campaign: This included forging documents to besmirch communist leaders via fabricated sex scandals, starting a mass letter-writing campaign from Italian Americans to their compatriots, and spreading hysteria about a Russian takeover and the undermining of the Catholic Church.
“We had bags of money that we delivered to selected politicians, to defray their political expenses, their campaign expenses, for posters, for pamphlets,” recounted F. Mark Wyatt, the CIA officer who handled the mission and later participated in more than 2½ decades of direct support to the Christian Democrats.

CIA always worked with NED. (National Endowment for Democracy). They always try to destabilize any country with different ideology. All started way back after the end of world war 2, the cold war started. US sees other ideology as dangerous and feel the need to bring democracy to all countries, so in other words, every US presidents starting from harry s truman are all involved. Believing democracy as a perfect system that all countries MUST adopt. This made US act aggressively and invade nations with different ideology, creating wars and chaos around the globe.
I saw this while doing a research on "Nazis and CIA" on Google search.
Augsburg’s SS unit performed “special duties,” a euphemism for exterminating Jews and other “undesirables” during the Second World War.
Although he was wanted in Poland for war crimes, Augsburg managed to ingratiate himself with the U.S. CIA, which employed him in the late 1940s as an expert on Soviet affairs. Recently released CIA records indicate that Augsburg was among a rogue’s gallery of Nazi war criminals recruited by U.S. intelligence agencies shortly after Germany surrendered to the Allies.

I'm a Chinese high school student and I found a interesting fact that most comments of TH-cam regard Mao as a bad guy and Deng as a great leader. But in my view, without Mao's contribution Deng cannot achieve such an achievement.
During the Mao's epoch(maybe "age"?I have a terrible English score...),China had to face strong enemies like US and USSR with unstable society and very low level's industry,so Mao had to set up a series of strange policy to tackle these problems.Mao made many mistakes but he give us a stable society(compare with Chiang's age)and basic industry(and much higher democracy level!A lot of people think Mao is a dictator but he really proceeded the democracy in China, compares to former time)
After Mao,Deng got a much better environment:we do not fight with US,USSR did not want to invade us,we have a basic industry…Deng had his great reform on this basics.
Nowadays ,i don't think china will have another Mao or Deng(I call them"Napoleonic leader").Because mordern society have much more information than before and it is also more complex, only a few people can't really handle it,even Napoleonic genius. So it's the time of common people to tackle the problems, every person tackle a little part of problem and this act pull the history.

While he tried many things which did not totally have very good outcomes, he was the unifier of the whole of China. Above all, he kept the foreigners out of China's economic system and thus prevented them from looting the useful riches and resources of China with their hard currency and large amount of capital. So China was able to improvise the correct successful economic reforms that made so much progress for China.

I just cannot finish all of the video, yes every single event and historical keystone is truth, but the logicalities behand that are totally wrong. Too many misleading explanations. I just give out one example:
10:18 Why Central Government started a "destroy-four-pest-activity" especially include sparrows (Rats, flies, mosquitoes may make sense but why sparrows?). Because biological warfare made by US dropping insects with bad germs in China's territory near by North Korea through aircrafts. China must defend - to kill bad insets and hosts of bad germs (rats and sparrows). There is another typical "Chinese life behavior" came out - boiling water before drink to kill possible bad germs in water. For diplomatic strategy, government hidden the real reason why asking people do such thing in that time. It is not for a stupid reason - Chairman Mao want to conquer nature.
The balance of nature had been broken by killing a lot of good creatures - sparrows. But who should pay for that? The leaders of China? or Invaders of US? (Korea War).

What you're hearing from westerners are lies aimed at destroying China so be very careful in accepting what they tell you as the gospel truth! The 1989 "protest" was organized by the CIA to overthrow the Chinese government so that the US could set up a new leader and government for the Chinese people with an American puppet that had been trained by the CIA to take orders from the US government. The US has also organized many other protest groups to overthrow the Chines government, such as the Tibetan terrorists who were trained by the US military to attack the Chinese people and government in the 1950's and 60's; the Uighur terrorists in the 1980's to the early 2000's who were trained by the CIA and National Endowment for Democracy (A subsidiary of the CIA) to kill innocent Chinese people so that the everyday lives of the ordinary Chinese people would be disrupted and to beat the Chinese government into submission so that the province of Xinjiang could be seized out of China's control and given to the Uighur separatists who have joined forces with the US government; and the Hong Kong "protests" were all organized, trained, and funded by the US government to destabilize China and overthrow the Chinese government because the US wanted to eliminate any rising countries that could challenge its global dominance in the economical, military, and social spheres.
If you read the US State Department documents they all said that all of the wars and upheavals within China and other countries that surround China were to contain China's rise and keep Chine down so that China would never be able to challenge the US's global hegemony over other countries. The US also has the same objective for Russia and that's why you are seeing so many wars around both China and Russia. These wars are all proxy wars designed to weaken both of these countries by eliminating their allies and get other countries to join forces with the US to go against China and Russia. There is a former US Marine Corps soldier by the name of Brian Berletic who has a channel on TH-cam who does a great job of exposing the US's crimes and schemes against China, Russia, and other countries that the US sees as a threat against its global hegemony. His TH-cam channel is called "The New Atlas" and your eyes would be opened like never before to the corruptions of the US government once you have watched a couple of his videos!

I disagree about the quality. During Mao's period average life expectancy grew from 33 years to 65. But they completely ignore this incredible success. Also the narrative the students were just mindless drones used by Mao is way too simple. Mao prevented the military to shoot the students (unlike Deng 24 years later) but the students didn't wait for Mao to start rioting.

Much respect for China successfully fending of western imperialism, a profoundly difficult achievement. Look at the result of the other major regions that failed in this regard (Africa, India, even aboriginal Australia, etc). Respect to Mao for protecting China from outside interference. Mao also did the forgotten but crucial work of rural health advancements saving 100 million lives and modernizing architecture which set the conditions to make the industrialisation that followed being possible.

China's spending on police and domestic surveillance will hit new heights this year, with "public security" outlays unveiled on Saturday outstripping the defense budget for the first time as Beijing cracks down on protest calls.
China's ruling Communist Party also issued its loudest warning yet against recent Internet-spread calls for "Jasmine Revolution" protest gatherings inspired by popular uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East.
The 13.8 percent jump in China's planned budget for police, state security, armed civil militia, courts and jails was unveiled at the start of the annual parliamentary session, and brought planned spending on law and order items to 624.4 billion yuan ($95.0 billion).

Mao is depicted as a utter devil. U showed that there are still many ppl admire and worship Mao. But why? What's their saying and logic? If u don't care explain, ofc viewers will think they are fools and brainwashed. But that cannot be further from the truth. Mao's achievements are just summarize into one sentence at the end. However, it's exactly the secret why China has achieved more that those 'democratic' and free market countries like India, despite they were in much better shape than China when just gained independence. As a neutral country as Singapore, I really expect CNA can deliver a better view on CPC than those western media. Clearly u didn't, might as well just relay CNN news instead.
