You may think it’s unfair that the Supra had performance brake pads and the Z had stock ones, however it should be noted that pro-level drivers like Jackie Ding have tracked the Supra on bone-stock pads without brake failure. We hoped that would be the case for the Z as well, but Coby found out otherwise.
Nissan has a long history of inadequate pad compounds. If you go back through the Lightning Lap from Car and Driver for the 350z and 370z, they do not hold up at VIR.
The brake issue with the Z is really, REALLY disappointing. The 370Z had the EXACT same issue with pads failing, get this 15 years ago, those are the same brakes. No improvement on these brakes on what is being sold as a performance car is unacceptable. Nissan should be putting brakes on the car from the factory that can handle at least a few hot laps. That extra $50 per car is not going to turn anybody away from buying it.
I think the main issue is that Nissan as a whole has been going through a lot lately (CEO issues, etc) and they didn't have enough resources or funding for better R&D. It very much seems like a car with compromise, like they did what they could with what they had. As much as it seems like they could've "just" put better brakes on it, there's a lot more that goes into it as an OEM.
It might be upsetting if you found out they're built using the same 370z chassis from 2010 , Nissan also released the same sports car GTR from 2009 all the way until 2025, the same 6 speed DCT transmission says it all.
The problem is that the stock rotors don’t have much heat capacity. They brake fade very easily. You need a set of high temperature brake sets to do the track.
Its basically a 370z with a new shell and powertrain. Personally I can understand re using old parts that are good, but those akebono brakes were already and issue over a decade ago. That’s because the 370Z and the new Z are the exact same car. The only difference is the new Z has the optional 9 speed (which is really really good in the Nismo but bootycheeks in the regular Z’s) and it has the twin turbo V6 pulled from the Q50/Q60. But both cars share the same chassis code, and a lot of the parts on a 370Z, both stock and aftermarket will fit on the new Z cause like I said before, they’re the same car. Unfortunately because they’re the same car, and share the same strengths, they also have the same exact weaknesses

Nissan really cut a lot of corners with the Z. Worst part is they’re charging a premium price for basically an upgraded 370 Z reminds me of The American cars of the 90s in 2000.
That’s a dumb comment. The WS6 was full of upgrades over a base model trans am. Base C5 was way different compared to a C5 ZO6. Same thing can be said about a base model mustang or a Cobra and Cobra R. Bigger brakes, an entirely different drive train, and a better suspension. You really have no clue. Base C5 came with an LS1, while the Zo6 had an LS6. You can delete this comment.
I think you have no clue what the hell you are talking about. The LS1 and LS6 did not have any considerable difference other than a few bolt ons and an aggressive cam shaft, it made a difference of may be 30 hp and thats it. He is right, there wasnt much difference in the cars during that era, the ls1 and ls6 were the same engines other that may be slighty smaller swept volume that increased the compression ratio and cams and intake.
@@inline6-b586 the heads and valves were different as well as the block. “The LS6 case is different from LS1 blocks in the design and strength of the main bearing bulkheads.” That’s an exact quote from GM. LS6 was far superior to the LS1. As far as chassis go there was also a difference as I pointed out as to what you get for options. I know more about what I’m talking about than you appear to.
@@inline6-b586except the LS1 and LS6 weren't marketed as a whole different generation, like the 370 and the new Z. 30 horsepower back then was not a small change either. Even today, model years usually get like a +5 torque bump For reference, the Q60 made 400 horsepower 10 years ago. What does the new Z make? Literally the same. For what they had, differences were plenty extreme back then
As someone who tracks a 350z, brakes are always the issue. With the stock placement of the calipers pad knock back is a problem as well as cooling. RIP stoptech, but the NISMO Stoptech calipers solve the pad knock back, add some ducts for serious track drivers, then get a fairly aggressive compound pad like the Raybestos ST43s if you can find them or some PFC 01s.
I was so stoked when I seen the new z coming out . Took me a few months to get to drive one . I had sold my ND2 Miata . I was very disappointed in the z as it did not drive like a sports car . Ended up with a Integra type S and I love it .
Can we stop calling it the 400Z? It never was called that by Nissan for one simple reason: The Z name has always been based on the displacement of the engine, NOT the horsepower. If anything it should be called a 300Z because of the 3.0L engine. Basing the name off the horsepower is historically inaccurate.
@@adccars359 oh i think with some nice coilovers, some adjustable arms for a proper alignment and a BBK upgrade it would slaughter the supra. ill also take the vr30ddtt long term over the b58 any day. both great engines, but nissan wins for longevity over bmw every single time.

The last footage with the GT3 makes me want to go full racecar with my R32 GTR but then I remember how nice it is to drive on the street haha I will have a GT3 car one day!
You guys should totally run a new BRZ/GR86 in this series. I’m very curious how they’ll hold up on the track, especially after seeing how Z’s brakes couldn’t hold up at all.
So one point, i doubt the z is faster stock, i dont believe it is based on tested numbers. Secondly, for anyone deciding between these 2, just remember the supra has a very veryyyyy cheap and easy way to get to safe 500whp. The z does not. You probably could push the z to higher numbers at your own risk. The B58 reliability in the supra is just the icing on the cake.
Really love this series, Coby’s so good on cam & narrating his drives That said, I’ve been rooting for the 400z since release and it just keeps coming up short on these head to heads, and that’s all before the dealerships bs Pathetic brakes are an insane shortcoming to have on a car like this
This is a great series,VIR looks like alot of fun! Its nice to see some track footage on attainable cars and throwing in some footage of the r8 gt3 was epic
I like so much these track tested vids! Coby is really good and explains everything so simple! If you upgrade brakes, coilovers, wheels and tyres etc yes the Z will catch the Supra. If you upgrade the same of both cars, the gap will probably be bigger...
I almost had a heart attack watching from my bed. props to gears and gasoline for sharing. and big kudos to Coby Shield for putting his life at risk for our entertainment. Thank you all.
Great video and nice driving by Coby! Non-NISMO Zs have always been grand tourers if you look back at the history of the model. I think a lot of folks end up feeling disappointed at the new Z's on-track performance because in the modern era everything that looks fast and has power is expected to be a track weapon, regardless of whether that's the goal of the manufacturer. In the case of the new Z, the NISMO model is the track oriented version. The Sport and Performance trims are designed for the road and the softer suspension and not-very-grippy tires are appropriate for that goal. Speaking of tires, the stock Z Performance tires are holding it back quite a bit as well compared to what the Supra comes with. Hopefully some time Coby gets to drive a NISMO on track (which also has bigger brakes by the way! And an oil cooler).
I ditched those UNSAFE bridgestone tires after only 5000 miles on my Z. A set of prius tires from 2006 are better!! Seriously the worst tires I have ever owned on any car - worse than the old 4 for $59 specials back in the 90's!! Just cut down "it's for our shareholders bro!!" edition. Nissan should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves for continuing to take CUT DOWN tires and push them for OEM use. Now here's where it gets fun: You can go buy the SAME TIRE from tire-rack - and it will have more tread. Turns out Bridgestone supplies the ultra shit version with the same model number to nissan so the corporate losers can enjoy a few extra pennies per share ROI - cuz - gotta feed the coke addiction. At a minimum - every Z comparison should run nothing less than a basic ps4s...as the majority of Z owners get rid of those ghetto trash bridgestones within a year of ownership if they actually drive the thing!
The new Z is such a disappointment. So overpriced for essentially a 370Z (which was essentially a 350Z) with an Infiniti engine. They did no development on the “new” Z. It still has all the deficiencies the 350Z had (fuel cut off in corners with half a tank of gas or less, brakes, soft suspension, etc.) while wanted $50k plus for it with a diff. It should be $40k with a diff. Nissan really dropped the ball and this coming from a former 300ZXTT, 350Z, and 370Z owner.
Wild to talk about the better brake pads on the supra and then say "yEaH, bUt tHeY dOnT OvErHeaT oN StoCk PaDs EitHeR." Like, okay? but you still had upgraded pads on only one car?
I had a 1999 Porsche 911 C2 Cabriolet with the 6 speed that had brakes you couldn't get to fade with 300 whp, for PDE's or backroads driving. Superb Brembos. Bone stock pads and fluid. In a car that weighed 3015lbs wet, it was fast enough to have fun and would certainly give the 400Z all it could handle for lap times if the Nissan's brakes actually worked. The 400Z being 25 years newer and still having garbage brakes is just unacceptable.
It's disappointing that the Z has sub-par brake pads, but honestly, who tracks a car without installing proper pads? I've never tracked a car with stock tires, brakes, or fluids. Never assume that your car is safe and track ready, if you're not the one that prepped it.
Loving this series It would be cool to get to a certain point where we can go H2H some fav cars revisit them... maybe even suggest to the owners some mods what you would do and have them come back... and yeah guess that would require people spending money they might not have, and lending their car out again. And it would be really cool to see Coby drive some faster street cars (was it a 911 GT3 last episode that kept getting in the way?) just to see where something like that will stand compared to say the civic supra etc etc - granted that would require people lending you their super expensive cars.
Enjoyed - As a Z fan/owner - Hope we can get a Z there with the proper setup - and - this is why many look at the cost and go buy something else as the Z really needs a number of things to actually compete .
Super cool to see these cars compared to each other. The 400Z has been a dream car of mine for a while. Now I want to see it back on the track with some of those mods mentioned. Biggest and probably the only pro I've heard about those cars is the power delivery. Would be interesting to see the dyno curves of the supra and the Z compared.
It seems to be a car that has looks that are better than it's performance (from the factory at least.) But it also seems like the downsides are pretty easy to sort out with a bit of time and money.
I have an idea for the track tested series, you guys should see if you can get some of the NASA/SCCA spec classed cars to compare. Seeing a show down between a Spec Miata / SPEC3 / Spec E46 / etc. with the same driver would be awesome!
Three things to the Z .. - it was manual .. - how are you wanting to track time a Z with OEM brakes .. -Its does not have any modifications So technically it was not a proper track race
You may think it’s unfair that the Supra had performance brake pads and the Z had stock ones, however it should be noted that pro-level drivers like Jackie Ding have tracked the Supra on bone-stock pads without brake failure.
@@inline6-b586yet BMW just offers a better tune for most of their “competition models vs the non competition cars lol
Ooooo so much difference woah
@@inline6-b586except the LS1 and LS6 weren't marketed as a whole different generation, like the 370 and the new Z. 30 horsepower back then was not a small change either. Even today, model years usually get like a +5 torque bump
For reference, the Q60 made 400 horsepower 10 years ago. What does the new Z make? Literally the same. For what they had, differences were plenty extreme back then
I'm loving this series with Coby! He does a great job of explaining the differences between the cars.
As someone who tracks a 350z, brakes are always the issue. With the stock placement of the calipers pad knock back is a problem as well as cooling. RIP stoptech, but the NISMO Stoptech calipers solve the pad knock back, add some ducts for serious track drivers, then get a fairly aggressive compound pad like the Raybestos ST43s if you can find them or some PFC 01s.
he was right though with the one and a half second... 1.5 seconds to the civic type R😂
Ctr won't keep up with the 21 Supra on this track.
@davothegreat9990 you dont get it, do you
I was so stoked when I seen the new z coming out . Took me a few months to get to drive one . I had sold my ND2 Miata . I was very disappointed in the z as it did not drive like a sports car . Ended up with a Integra type S and I love it .
Good lord that was scary
Can we stop calling it the 400Z? It never was called that by Nissan for one simple reason: The Z name has always been based on the displacement of the engine, NOT the horsepower. If anything it should be called a 300Z because of the 3.0L engine. Basing the name off the horsepower is historically inaccurate.
+ Came to say. Channel loses credibility to me when they don't even know that simple fact.
I want to see a Z with suspension, brakes, and alignment come back and do this again.
Tyres are a major factor. The stock ones re absolutely trash.
Z has 65 more hp than a90. it should win
@@adccars359 oh i think with some nice coilovers, some adjustable arms for a proper alignment and a BBK upgrade it would slaughter the supra. ill also take the vr30ddtt long term over the b58 any day. both great engines, but nissan wins for longevity over bmw every single time.
Oh yeah just rebuild the car for another 15k and it should be great. What a piece of junk.
@@adccars359 the Z most definitely does not have 65 more horsepower, look up dyno numbers, 2024 Z makes 360 whp, 2024 mk5 dynos around 376 wheel horsepower
Z: No! No! No! No! No! stop trying to kill me.
Supra: God this thing is fast.
Oh buddy! The Car at the end is the chefs kiss to end this great video! Great work guys!
This is my first time watching a channel such as this. I was glued to each turn shown and the bonus car at the end was a great surprise especially with having a pro driver. Enjoyed this, thank you.
This series is awesome, please keep this going! Literally my favourite car review as a track guy, I have a full suspension build M2 comp and a E90 M3 I wouldn’t mind bringing you guys from Toronto just to contribute. It’s not easy to do track content on TH-cam,Keep up the good work guys!
Outstanding video comparison all around. Covered tuning potential, stock capabilities with the GR Supra, and the dominance of GT3 tech. Very nice.
calling it the 400z will trigger a bunch of trumpet exhaust enthuziasts, brace yourself for the "ackshually..." comments lmao
I don’t ever like Zs but why are they calling the car a completely different made
Up name of the car
its like calling a bmw a toyota...
Wait, what are they calling it then?
@@musewolfman everyone was just expecting it to be called 400Z because of the power rating. Nissan named it the z, ditching the number coming from the engine displacement.
For real. Laughable.
Shoutout to Coby for being able to talk pretty normally while pushing the car to its limits. Not an easy thing to do
The extra at the end was such a rare treat! Hopefully we get more of the "somebody's car gets driven by Coby" endings.
Love these Track Tested videos! Coby shines at the technical delivery that anyone can understand. Great work all around G&G.
Shoutout to Coby. I enjoyed his commentary while driving. His experience def showed when things went wrong in the z. Nice work guys
SICK content and great context - GnG still reigns as one of the legit content providers of real world info. Appreciate you guys!
Love these track videos. Pls keep em coming
I see like one Nissan Z for every 20 MKV supras I see in one week. It’s crazy how fast the hype died for the Z, I forget it exist sometimes for how rarely I see it
i am really loving this series, i was never a fan of watch racing stuff, but i really enjoy watching the technical part of driving fast
13:25 incredible composure. What a professional
his honesty is what made this video great. I love the review.
There is no such thing as a 400Z. It is a Nissan Z. 😅
The last footage with the GT3 makes me want to go full racecar with my R32 GTR but then I remember how nice it is to drive on the street haha I will have a GT3 car one day!
I know the z kinda underperforms, but it looks so good
This is a fantastic series! I really love it!
Yup, feel the brake issue. Lost brakes on back straight in Okayama downhill at 260kph. Scariest thing ever. He did an amazing job staying calm.
Even if you don't tune, the 2021 and newer Supras are rated 50 HP higher than the 2020 in this comparison
Really love this series, Coby’s so good on cam & narrating his drives
That said, I’ve been rooting for the 400z since release and it just keeps coming up short on these head to heads, and that’s all before the dealerships bs
Pathetic brakes are an insane shortcoming to have on a car like this
This is a great series,VIR looks like alot of fun! Its nice to see some track footage on attainable cars and throwing in some footage of the r8 gt3 was epic
What we needed to see! The Z needs better brakes, it's just a little too scary to see
I like so much these track tested vids! Coby is really good and explains everything so simple! If you upgrade brakes, coilovers, wheels and tyres etc yes the Z will catch the Supra. If you upgrade the same of both cars, the gap will probably be bigger...
Why do people still call it a 400Z. Absolutely ridiculous and stupid. It's just Z.
Yeah, it's annoying, it was never called the 400Z.
AH THE SATURDAY MAGIC TOUCH HAVE ARRIVED
Never been this lucky to be here so quickly! Love your videos guys! Keep it up🎉
A good set of tires in the Supra and that thing would be a weapon stock. I'm impressed.
23 year old chassis is worse than 6 year old chassis, more at 6
And they’re both about the same price…..
Who’s got the 23 year old chassis?
@@olajimimark thats the problem! good thing dealers are giving 15k price drops now, because they just collect dust at dealers.
@@hotboyracingthe Nissan
@@olajimimarkno they are not. The Z starts at 42 and the supra at 54. That is a big differance.
Love this series and so cool to see Coby so involved with you guys!
The timing of this video is perfect!!! Right when I needed it. Thanks!
The lap with the GT3 looks insanely fast!
I almost had a heart attack watching from my bed. props to gears and gasoline for sharing. and big kudos to Coby Shield for putting his life at risk for our entertainment. Thank you all.
The Supra had a seat and harness. That combo is at least 2 seconds improvement right there
Absolutely love this series, keep up the amazing videos guys :)
Honestly, the Supra is a do it all sports car and the new Z seems more like a comfortable GT coup
Which is what z's are.
Love this series guys. Hoping you guys continue this!
For 50k-60k you could get a used GTR and get 2x the performance out of it
Very Enjoyable, Loved the extra content in the end as well.
Very smart to have the track layout on the steering wheel !❤
Okay the last surprise was completely unexpected 👀
Pedal cam came in clutch.
17:44 Motorsport Playground! 🇲🇾 salute
Any idea whose car is this? Seems like a Hong Konger's.
@dunno but I know they wrap that series of race cars
@@danielsoon0302 I didn't notice their logo until you pointed out lol.
The Z has a duck TAIL, not a duckbill. A ducks bill is on its face not its ass...
That GT3 lap looked nuts
Previous generations of the z struggle with brake fade as well. Not enough air flow over the rotors to keep them cool.
The arm of Coby's race suit looks like the sticker on a Chiquita banana.
Loving this series
It would be cool to get to a certain point where we can go H2H some fav cars revisit them... maybe even suggest to the owners some mods what you would do and have them come back... and yeah guess that would require people spending money they might not have, and lending their car out again.
And it would be really cool to see Coby drive some faster street cars (was it a 911 GT3 last episode that kept getting in the way?) just to see where something like that will stand compared to say the civic supra etc etc - granted that would require people lending you their super expensive cars.
Love these track based car comparisons. Coby is a pretty amazing driver too
You can tell the bro's misus was filthy at him for getting invited over her, haha.
Dog box, lol.
Enjoyed - As a Z fan/owner - Hope we can get a Z there with the proper setup - and - this is why many look at the cost and go buy something else as the Z really needs a number of things to actually compete .
Your editing are on point, loved it!
BOT
If the owner added negative camber on the front only I would expect that to make the car more tail happy than from factory.
this is my new favorite series
I love that this channel got their own tame racing driver 😂
Continue this series, it’s amazing!
The Z would be ok if it wasn't priced the same as the Supra
What's a 400Z?
I really enjoyed this episode! Good job Gears and Gasoline.
I LOVE THESE EPISODES! A little technical and a little bit of POV. Perfect Saturday episode to watch with my son.
09:41 "Holy Cow!" You know things got serious when Coby uses firm language
I have an idea for the track tested series, you guys should see if you can get some of the NASA/SCCA spec classed cars to compare. Seeing a show down between a Spec Miata / SPEC3 / Spec E46 / etc. with the same driver would be awesome!
It’s called Nissan Z. Not 400Z, not 400ZX. We know what engine it has. This is like saying VTECH lol
Three things to the Z ..
- it was manual ..
- how are you wanting to track time a Z with OEM brakes ..
-Its does not have any modifications
So technically it was not a proper track race
The extra content at the end was drool worthy 🤤
