  • I get asked about my sprayer... A LOT! One of my first ever TH-cam videos covered all the basics of my Gravity Fed HVLP Pneumatic Spray Gun but that was a year ago, so it’s definitely time for a refreshed version. In this video I’ll talk about how I use my spray gun to flip furniture with chalk style paints and water-based topcoats. I’ll also give you some other options if a pneumatic system isn't right for you, show you how I clean my gun and more.
    I am definitely not an expert on the topic of air tools or compressors so here is a link to a great beginner style video by Leah at “See Jane Drill” that I found really helpful • Air Compressor, Line S...

    Hi Katie !
    I bought the wagner home decor in April and it is working very good. I tried the HVLP with the compressor but it was too technical for me.
    My whole kitchen was painted with it during the pandemic and I love the result.

      get disposable paint strainers from a paint store or hardware store (Lowes or HD). You should always strain your paint. Double check your instruction manual if your gun is missing a small filer. Depending on the brand and type it could be in the handle if it's airless. Happy spraying!

    Why not just use the flexio line? I'm an avid auto painter and love my sprayer but for furniture it's overkill and have tons of overspray. If you or anyone are set on a spray gun make sure to use LVLP not HVLP because it uses less PSI to CFM ratio required. Meaning you can use a small cheap pancake compressor which usually use 3 CFM @ 30psi. All guns are different but LVLP's usually require same CFM which is most important component. Also, use a PPS system you can find them at Harbor Freight which comes with a permanent cup and the liners and also buy the universal spray gun adapter that makes attaching and detaching the cup system quick. Always filter your paint as well!

    Katie, you make it all look so easy! I have loved every piece you have done! Would you ever use latex paint in a satin finish? I have done that and been pleased with the finish, just wondered why you never do?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to promote everyone creating with whatever medium or technique they fell inspired by, but here's my stance on latex...
      Plain old latex paint is formulated for use on walls and not furniture surfaces. It has a tendency to stay gummy and sticky for a very long time. If it gets dinged or scratched it tends to start lifting the other paint around it and peel away. Furniture paints will scratch or dent but they won't peel up around the damage. I'm able to get a nice hard finish with chalk paints and poly topcoats and that's my preference. I've done a few videos recently where I removed failing latex finishes before fixing them up if you're interested in watching.

    Do you have to break the gun down and clean between coats or is there a trick like wrapping brushes/rollers in plastic wrap to keep them from drying out? I mean logic would dictate if the paint on your piece was dry, the paint in the nozzle would dry as well and clog it.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope, I just hang it up and wait for the next spray. It’s fine to leave it loaded for a few hours or even overnight with waterbased paints and topcoats.

    I purchased the central pneumatic HVLP sprayer from Harbor Freight and have the large compressor. I am trying to spray Lily Moon 3 in 1 paint and it is just not working. Do all paints have to be thinned to get the volume of spray to coat? So far I am not getting enough paint coming out and it clogs easily. Pretty frustrated.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would thin LillyMoon with a bit of water tho get a better viscosity but it shouldn’t be too hard to get a good spray. Make sure your filtering your paint through a paint strainer - especially if it’s clogging - and open the flow dial on the back to get more product moving through.

      If you’re having trouble with your sprayed texture try experimenting with different types of paints, consistencies and settings.

    Hi Katie, so I finally got my first spray gun but having a hard time finding the right filters. Not sure your respirator is 3M but if it is can that p100 filter work both for the sanding, using shellac based, and spray painting as well as stripping furniture?

      @salvagedbykscott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been using a Honeywell mask for years but just picked up a 3M mask too. According to both companies websites the P100 filters do offer both gas/vapour and particulate protection.

    Hi Katie, l have a question about curing paint 😊 I just sold a little cabinet which was on the net only 2 hours. The unit was only finished approx 3 days ago and the lady wants to pick it up tomorrow. I’m just concerned about the paint being cured enough. How quickly do you let pieces go after painting? Thanks in advance ☺️ ps acrylic paint and of course top coats.

      Hey Darren! I give all of my clients a little care card that explains cure times and that they’ll need to be extra cautious for the first 30 days. It also covers cleaning (no harsh chemicals, excess water, etc.) and a reminder to be careful with scratchy decor placed on surfaces. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the info, I bought one simulator yours here in California at harbor freight, I think it might be similar to your princess auto. Do you have problems with it clogging up? And it leaves a little bit of orange skin texture, almost imperceptible, but I get really close to it and I see it and I don’t like it 😕 🙈. Any recommendations? I’m trying hard to get good finishes, but I’m struggling, thanks!

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It shouldn’t clog if you’re filtering your paint. If you’re not a fan of the texture, try turning down your air pressure, thinning your paint a little more and sanding in between coats. Practice makes perfect 😉❤️

      @@salvagedbykscott thank you for your advise! I will try thinning more, I might need to get to the point where I know what’s the right consistency. I hope to get to your level of expertise one day 😄. All your projects are awesome ✨ and thanks for sharing as well, you e help me so much!!

    Can I use 20 gallons compressor?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe most guns require a minimum tank size of 30 gallons but you’d have to ask the specific tool manufacturer for direction on that.

    I was wanting to repaint my laninate and particle board furniture in my bedroom. Any suggestions for me? I wanted to use chalk paint, but need about 2 gallons. Any suggestions where to get 2 gallons? All I can find is qts.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm... The largest I’ve ever seen is a quart size. Chalk paint does usually have much better coverage than traditional latex paints so you might not need as much as you think. I can do a 6 drawer dresser an a nightstand with a quart in my sprayer. Brushing uses even less. Good luck with your projects 😁

    Such a clear informative video! I tried spraying some dining room chairs which was a real disaster! I’m positive I did something wrong😩.
    So you mention in your videos how much you really like the shellac base primer. Do you clean out your help sprayer with ammonia?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve only just started spraying my primer and I do clean it up with ammonia. I’ve always rolled it and will probably go back to that application as cleaning the shellac is no fun 😒

    How many ounces of paint on average do you use on your projects? how many oz for dresser/nightstand/ china cabinet do you think? can you tell me ounces, I was thinking about getting a spray gun with a 6oz cup.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually make sure that I have a Quart (32 oz) of paint for each project, just incase something goes wrong and I need an additional coat or 2, but small dressers and nightstands usually use somewhere close to 16 oz (1 Pint). Larger dressers, china cabinets are around 24oz depending on the colour. I use a 16 oz gun. I hope that helps!

    Have you ever or do you think watered down chalk paint could be sprayed out of just a regular spray bottle like you get at dollar tree ❓

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      🤔 You’d have to add so much water that it would comprise the colour and texture of the paint. I think you’d just end up with a mess.

    If you have a septic system house DO NOT clean your paint supplies in your sink. Do it outside in your lawn. Paint will destroy your leech field in no time

      Nope. You need at least 30 gallons to be able to maintain a continuous spray.
