Another nice technique is to use a round deep dish tray for flower pots (in other words - a general plastic dish for flower pots), which needs to be a large enough size to put a 'plastic square drainage grate' (from local hardware stores). The flower pot then sits on the plastic drain grate. It's then possible to just water the plant --- some prescribed amount -- every few days or so, and any water that drains through the pot will be ok, as it goes into the water tray, but the flower pot won't sit in water, because the pot sits on the drain grate. This is for cases where we don't want to take the flower pot over to a tap or bucket in order to give the spaghnum moss a soaking - which is nice and ok for small number of plants, or we got a lot of time on our hands. Otherwise, if we have lot of plants, some time-saving (but still effective) methods can come in handy.

Hi Amy! Watching your video just let me know why I keep my orchids the way that I do. I learned so much from you and your watering that I have transferred practically all of my orchids I think except for three of them into semi water culture with moss and River Rock on the bottom then I leave about an inch put my holes in with the soldering iron and then I make coals from there up with the soldering iron I feel it as I was saying with the river rock on the bottom then the Moss and then I top it off with a little bit of river rock. I love it! I think of you every time I see the Beautiful moss on the inside is all nice and green my orchid roots are so healthy and beautiful. And my containers are any beautiful plastic items that I buy at Ross or Big Lots or Party City. Love you Amy God bless! 👀👉👵👈

Super video once again my special friend 😆 Do you use the flushing method when you fertilise your orchids? I have resorted to using a lot less water when I fertilise (that is every alternate week) but I don't know if that is the right thing to do. I have been told I must take care that I don't create an acid build-up! To date my orchids seem quite happy and I have not noticed any form of white residue on the top layer of bark.
Oh yes, I also spray the aerial roots when I water every week on your advice now, as you indicated that absorption takes place along the tips and length as well. They seem ultra happy with that and I have noticed the tips have that lovely darkened reddish colour now too. Yaay we are all very happy. Love to you and Buddy and your camera gal 🌞💝

Hello my friend! :) I've noticed that since I use low doses of fertilizer, there's no fertilizer build-up. I water with clear water about once month, when I think about it. ;) Several years ago, I used fertilizers at a higher dose and salt build-up was a problem. In any media, I don't recommend high doses of fertilizers for this reason. It will break down the bark and turn it acidic...then it's all downhill from there. When your orchids are happy, that's the best sign that you're growing them well, and you're doing a great job! :) I spray down my aerial roots about once a week as well, I believe that is important for their growth as well. Aah yes .. that makes all the sense in the world. To be quite honest I do not actually measure my orchid feed as per instruction. If anything I use much less than stipulated and only do that 2x a month as mentioned. So it seems to be working for now. Yaay!

You're really wise to do what works for your orchids...it sounds like you've got an intuitive green thumb! :) You can measure and "do" everything just right, but intuition and knowing what your plants need is key. There's a part of learning to grow that really can't be taught apart from that intuition. It's part of "Orchid Whispering". lol! You can try using a humidity tray around your orchids, or you can place your orchids on saucers filled with small rocks. Fill the saucers with water so that it's just under the orchid pot, so that the pot doesn't touch the water. That will create additional humidity around the orchid. She first water orchid media with RO Water and get the media wet . Then he pour only a tinny amount of soliable fertiliser on the & arround the root not making the pot wet and thereby save water and fertisiser aswell ( sound good ))!!
i asked her why she does this ?
She replied to me that
" getting media wet and fertilise can make roots to absorve max than you pour fertiliser on a dry root !! "
Any way both have good / Bad
but understandind and following is always good !!
but those grow on lava and bare rooted mounted orchid they might feel comfortable socking them couoke of minutes !!

How often are you fertilizing your orchids that are growing in moss? Now that the temperatures are warmer? Poor little mini Phal Intenscity! I wonder if her bloom likes being turned upside down? It makes me nervous when you do that, LOL! Do you remember the moss experiment that I was going to do? I transplanted a WC Phal into moss in the middle of January. It had one root and it really wasn't thriving. The Phal is really doing well now - it suffered no transplanted shock at all. The old root did die but it now has several nice, new green roots! :)
Right now, I'm fertilizing with Better Gro and then the next watering I use Cal-Mag. I've read that you only need to fertilize in moss twice a month because the moss retains both nutrients and moisture really well. So if you're using MSU, you can fertilize twice a month and you'll be covered, because the MSU has calcium. Or you could fertilize with MSU and then alternate it with Epsom salts. Thanks for sharing the results of your experiment...it WORKED! :) I'm so glad that the Phal is doing well now in moss. That's great news! It's going to be summer this weekend! :) A & B
Caroline hi Carolyn it's me Libby. I was reading your comment and I actually do remember. I must say that I learned so much from Amy. Now I have done what's Best in my growing space and I have practically all of my orchids in semi water culture I get any plastic container that I like and I get my little soldering iron and I put holes in them put rocks on the bottom the rest I put moss and then a layer of rocks on top Philip the bottom and I can go 3 days 4 days without watering my orchids and they are outside the Moss is all green and healthy. Hi Cassandra and welcome to my channel! 😇 I only water my orchids in moss when the pot gets light in weight...that means it's ready to be watered again. It might take a week or even 2. Hey amy thanx for all the great videos. Ur videos helps a lot. Well am an extremly new orchid grower( just one month or so). I am having some problem in understanding the light requirements for orchids. I have them on window where they get very bright shade but no direct sun light.do i really need to let them have some sun light on them directly(but filtered)? I mostly grow vandas and dendrobium.

Observing in moss when I water the orchid stays wet even after a week. Normal????????
@@elizabetrodriguez7778 I did an updated video on this last month with lots of info. If the moss is still wet after a week, reduce the amount of water you use. It's really easy to overwater in moss. Set your orchid pot on some paper towels to reduce the moisture if you do happen to overwater. 😇

Hi Amy and thank you so much for this video and such a GORGEOUS flower!! I have two mini Phals that I've been dying to transfer to moss and also my larger Phal that was a mini lol!! I bought the Solo cups and moss so can't wait!! Btw, would Red Anthuriums that are usually sold in grocery stores do well in all moss? I got mine in October in full bloom and it's not doing well!! I tried bark and also river rocks and nothing!!
Hi Aida! Anthuriums are really prone to root rot, so the soil they prefer is about half potting soil and half perlite. I think sphagnum moss would set up too moist of an environment for them. Happy growing!

Hi James! This mini phal is a no ID, but I have a regular-sized phal that looks exactly like it, and the ID is Phal Intenscity. I call it my "mini Intenscity". Sorry I can't be more exact with that ID. I found it at Lowe's last year, and had to have it! Have a great day and happy growing! :)

Hi Sandy! I really like both, and I would use either one. But I have most of my minis in moss, and just one in the Orchiata bark. (I have it in bark because I ran out of moss. But it's done really well.) I think growing the minis a little bit better in moss. That was a great question, it really made me think! :) Have a great day and happy growing!

Hi Amy, I know this is an old video, but I need some advise. Have you stopped using live spagmoss in your orchids? I have about 4 orchids that have grown the dry New Zealand Spagmoss and is green now. Should I repot them? I’ve read that it may not be good for the orchids. All 4 are doing great though, but I’m not sure what to do. Help!
Hi Carmen! I did an update video last month about this. My environment is too humid now to grow in live moss, so I've converted almost my entire collection to Orchiata bark. If you decide to repot yours, I would wait till fall, especially since they're doing so well in it. Happy growing! 😇🌺
How do you fertilize? I have oncidium orchids and though I know they would thrive in moss I keep them outside and I don't know how that would work since I don't bring them in when it rains unless there is going to be a storm. Any suggestions?
How do you know what size of pot to repot your phals in? If they dont have huge roots to you put them in smaller containers?
Does it matter if the moss mixture turned green? I've purchased a premium orchid mixture but not sure if I should repot it. Mine has half moss turned to green.
Your moss has sprouted...and that's a wonderful thing. All of my moss is sprouted and green. My orchids thrive in it. 🌷

@@randomblueper6689 once it's green, it usually stays that way. I don't allow green moss to get really dry, proper watering is important. Not too wet, not too dry.

I would like to know if it is possible to bring an orchid back from the dead? I gave my wife on our wedding day an beautiful orchid. But it was neglected when we left it at her parents. As it has special meaning, I would like to keep it. Is this possible?
Hi Benjamin! What type of orchid is it? Is it not blooming anymore or are the leaves and roots dried up? What is the extent of the damage? If it's too far gone...if the leaves and roots are shriveled up and dead, then it would be easier to start with a new plant. But if it's not blooming and the foliage is still nice, then you can work with it. Happy growing!
Hi Miss Whisperer knows best but I took a 1.5” piece of orchid stem that looked dead it had no roots and it had a .5” cut leaf and that was it. I put it just touching Miss Whisperers water with calmag recipe and low and behold a few days later it started to get a new leaf and a root! Try it if you still have it. Who knows maybe it will come back

The problem is; you have made yourself complicated in the first place, just use a pot with drainage holes already..
It'll be much simple in the way of watering and ur orchid might even be healthier.
Hi! I completely changed my setup for draining my orchids growing in moss. I did a video last month where I show my watering hack. You're right, it's much easier when they're not growing in an outer container that doesn't have holes.
