A mate of mine just bought his first bike. Because of that he asked the doctor if he can go off the anti-depressants. He agreed but told him there would be side effects. Hasn't experienced any and is feeling better than ever. Here's to motorcycle therapy.
Your comments addressing your mental health are superb. As a psychologist, the number of chats I’ve had on the side at rallies over the years is immeasurable. I think riding offers so much for people’s wellbeing that we naturally gravitate towards it when our bodies need it.
That is so good to hear from you 👍 Very well put, that we naturally gravitate towards it when we need it most. Motorcycling is such a great form of therapy, amongst many other techniques!! Cheers
I have a R1250RS and it was my choice over a GS. I based my decision on being a dedicated road rider. If you ask me, the whole GS mania thing is based largely on visual and visceral appeal. The GS is really a compromise between on and off road. The RS as a purely on road bike gets my vote. Nice review, and your criticism of the clunky quick shifter is spot on.
Hi, great choice it is nice to hear people going for the RS over the GS and being happy with their decision! Completely agree the GS is largely bought on dreaming of adventures, but is very rarely taken off road (I would like on though haha). Hopefully in 2023 when they update the GS they will improve the quickshifter across the boxer range. Cheers
@@thierryfaquet7405 A little late, but whatever. It's a tourer packing an extra 40kg / 88 pounds of weight - unless you plan to make exceedingly long rides and actually want the storage it offers, I'd say the RS is the better option.
My bike is due to be delivered in October this year and i've seen comments such as the quickshifter being clunky. Could somebody elaborate what this mean and are there any bad points about this bike? I choose this bike because im 1.6m and there is an option for 760mm lowered seat.
@@soulevolution2735 I own the 2020 R1250r with all the packages... It feels like a kick behind your neck when you go from first to second gear, sometimes olso from second to third gear, need to go at 3800-4000 revs or more to be able to do shifthing from 2nd to 3th, 4th, and have a nice feeling, shifthing down on the road is a fine feeling..All my friends have GS, and one GT... Last year we made a 3 days ride throught different Mexican states and throught one of the more dangerous but beautiful sinuous road in the country going down from Mountain to the pacific ocean, and afther finishing the trip every body agreed this was the Best bike for that road trip... The only compromise is the rare ocasions when your friends want to do some Off road in the Mountains...but my Best friends Just bought and old 650 GS because the 1200 already had was too heavy for the kind of dirty roads with a lot of Stones we have....
I think the 'Adventure ' bike label could just be replaced with 'Confortable ' . The lack of scrunched up legs and weight on the wrists is the main reason I ride an adventure bike and a Harley........but then again I'm well old ! (59)
I just bought a 2020 RS and first upgrade was some Helibar bar backs. With that I'm pretty comfortable. Been riding Harley cruisers for years and wanted something sportish. I bet I'd love the GS though.
The telescopic forks give a different feel than telelever. I have had the RS since 2015, both 1200 & 1250. Wonderful bike. I use a top box, use it for daily commute. It does all that is asked, with no serious issues. Upshift on the GASP to 2nd & 3rd usually crude, so I use the clutch.
Yes that is one major difference from the GS (telescopic forks). Sounds like you have loved the RS and thats great to hear. It definitely has its place in the market. 👍 Hopefully the new model GS will address the Quick Shifter issues and that will filter down into the RS/RT models. Cheers
🙌 many thanks glad you enjoyed it! Absolutely I find going for a ride so therapeutic and freeing of the mind, it really does never fail to help me feel a bit better. Cheers
I've had an R1250RS for 7500 miles now. A few things... - Yes, you get used to not hitting your shins. - Yes, the GS is a bit more flickable. Just put some effort into the RS and it's fine. - You get used to the quickshifter and how it behaves. You need to be on the throttle to shift up and if you are, it's fine. I pretty much always use the quickshifter going up including from 1 to 2. I use it less going down. It also broke in a bit over the miles. - Over the course of a long day, the seating position of the GS is still more comfortable, but the RS is good. - I hope the medication situation comes out well
👍 Nice you have put some good miles on her! Haha thanks I thought it may be quite quick to get used to hitting the shins. I suppose once you have a few miles under your belt then you get the confidence to put some muscle into the corners. Yes it was a bit of an unfair example with the QS, however I do find other manufacturers to be a lot better. Many thanks I appreciate it. All the best
G'day friend! Good luck with the meds fine tuning. I was happily surprised to see you on the RS! About two months ago I dropped into my dealership to get some oil to top up my R9T - and there on the showroom floor was a rare beast, the RS in Imperial Blue. One sit on it and I knew it was my spirit animal. I had a 750GS and never really liked going offroad, all the noise, dust in my eyes and slightly anxious about dropping - so a big GS really made little sense. On the RS I love the engine, looks, how I feel when I'm bombing around. It's rare here. Oh, apparently the Dynamic Pro is just a user configurable program - I'll have to play with it but don't expect any wheelies lol. Thanks for this finely edited upload!
Hey, thanks so much I appreciate that 👍 Things seem to be leveling out a bit now which is nice!! Yes they are rare in the UK as well, not too sure why. I guess the adventure bike craze has put them out of the market a bit. Still such a great option though, as you say not many people really take their adventure bikes off roading. Feel like the RS is a brilliant option if you like the GS but want to just ride on the road. Haha now worries, I am not much of a wheelie guy myself either!! Thanks I appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers
Have had 2005GS then changed to RS as felt lighter to manhandle. Both 1200 and 1250 RS were superb as I found that they were much easier to get on and of than GS. Plus thet look so much nicer.
don't use quick shifter until you are at 3000 revs or above on up shift .pretty smooth on down shift from higher revs. Not the best quick shifter but it works BMW 'S take some getting use too. love my R1250RT
👍 Yes I was being a bit unfair by using it so low down in the revs! However it is definitely not as good as its rivals. I am sure once you get used to it, its not a problem. I am yet to ride an RT but can imagine they are amazing bikes. Cheers
A good review, thanks Angus, and best wishes on changing your antidepressant. I am sure you provide insight to many people. I take delivery of my RS next week. Why did I choose the RS, and why not the GS? 1. I want it for touring, and like you I wanted a shaft drive. I am not taking it off road. 2. I love the Boxer engine. 3, The COG is low, and this bike is more manoeuvrable when being pushed around the garage than the GS, which I found quite top heavy. I will be shoving it around ferries etc. 4. I can 'flat foot' it - not an issue for many, but I feel more confident. 5. There are fewer of them than the GS - though that is of course because the GS is a great bike.6. I prefer the look of it compared to the adventure style....anyway, I will let you know - but I am keeping my Speedmaster.
Many thanks I appreciate it and glad you liked the review. Congratulations on your new bike 👍 All very good and valid reasons for having it over a GS. That is definitely a strong point of this bike, I have always liked the looks. Think you will have great fun touring with it. Few, definitely have to hang onto the Speedmaster 😁 Cheers
Great review of the RS. To me it's odd that I have not yet seen a slobbering love-fest video on the RS. If I were a vlogger, you'd feel the need to wipe your computer screen from time to time! But I love hearing other's insight on this bike. I have had my RS for a year and a half. Bought it for in town commuting for my short ride to work and local errands, so not getting a lot of miles on it except for maintenance trips 125 miles away! Nonetheless, I love the nimble handling around town and the rush of that shift-cam engine when I get the opportunity to wind it out. Just got back from its first trip to the mountains, including Smokey Mountains National Park and Trail of the Dragon. It is a blast in the mountains. I can't compare flickability to the GS, but I had no complaints with handling, and I will not be doing off-road unless GPS gets me off course! I agree with comments on the clunky autoshifter 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, but downshifts to 1st have smoothed out over time. My only complaint has been the windscreen, which I replaced with the V-Stream. This made an incredible difference at interstate speeds. Keep up the good work and best wishes on your MH journey.
Hi Stewart, many thanks I appreciate it 👍 Haha I can tell you like the bike then! Sounds ideal for what you use it for. I am a bit jealous of your recent trip to the mountains 😁Need to plan myself a trip soon. Yes shame about the QS in low gears but then I suppose that is not really what it is designed for. Great bike and looking forward to its update, potentially with the boxer 1300!! Cheers
Another great review Redang. Good for you in making this video whilst coming off some meds. I tried that once by very, very gradually reducing the dosage but didn’t work for me. But heyho everybody’s different and I wish you luck in this new faze of your treatment. Take care.
🙌 Thanks so much and glad you liked the review. I thought I should go ahead and do it otherwise I will feel bad for not doing it! Thanks, the first week was a bit hard but things seem to be leveling off a bit now. I am going to give it ago, but there is no shame on going back on the meds if needed. Cheers and all the best.
Wonderful review and so very well done! Granted, I'm a bit older at 71, but I believe I've solved this dilemma once and for all...I purchased one each. :) :) :) '19 GSA, soon to be replaced by a '23 GS on order, along with a '20 RS. Love 'em both. Downsizing from the '19 GSA to a '23 GS, as I simply prefer the slightly smaller, look/feel of the GS vs. GSA. Nice to have the extra range of the GSA, but not at the expense of that humongous fuel tank. By the way,, I'm a Walter Mitty off-road rider. If I accidentally rode across your yard, I'd classify that as off-rode riding. I did install bar risers on my RS, and for me, that was a game changer. If I could only have one...I'd be lying to you if I picked one over the other. Save up your money, get the kids out of the house, become old/senile and buy 'em both. Can't go wrong with either one. Keep up the great work!
👌 Many thanks I appreciate it, and very glad you liked the review. 😂 Good for you, now that sounds like the best way to solve the problem!! Absolutely brilliant, why compromise if you don't have to. Same if I where to get a GS (which I would love to) then I would have the standard as think the GSA would be a bit big for me. Very much looking forward to the new model GS coming out soon. Haha I need to have the kids first! Possibly I could sell one of them to get the GS 😉 Many thanks and all the best.
@@redangrevivalI forgot to mention the most important message concerning your recent review. Thank you so much for being up front with mental health and how important riding motorcycles can be to help find your way out of darkness. In the last year and a half, I lost my passenger/fiance/love of my life to cancer. Six months later I lost my daughter unexpectedly to sepsis. Without my great motorcycle friends/community, along with getting out for a ride every once in awhile, did more than I can put into words to help me from literally giving up. I appreciate your message so much! Keep up the great work.
@@j.t.8759 Thanks so much 🙌 It is my pleasure to talk about it and I really hope that it can help others out to also be more open about their mental health. So so sorry to hear about your loss. That must be so hard I cannot imagine! So great to hear that motorcycling has been a positive place for you and has helped you through your hard times. Long may it continue to help and all the best. Take care of your self, you are not alone!
Good video, I had the same problem with the cylinders which was one of the reasons I ended up getting the Yamaha Super Tenere. Think I'd go with the RS, bit cheaper too I think. Keep up with the mental heath awareness, very important, and hope you'll reaclimat to life without pills soon. 🙂👍💕
Hi Scott, thanks glad you liked the video. Yes I hit my shins a few times on the cylinders!! Ouch haha. I am sure I would get used to it but definitely something to consider. I have never ridden a Sipper Tenere but have heard good things 👍 Yes RS definitely works out a bit cheaper. I will do and many thanks I appreciate it. I seem to be acclimatising a bit better now so fingers crossed it continues to improve. All the best, cheers
Thanks for the great video. If you hit a downer make sure you are as busy as possible and keep as fit as possible. Keeps your serotonin high. Take care
It is a pleasure and thanks really pleased you enjoyed the video. Cheers I appreciate the advice 👍 I think I am slowly adjusting now, things seem to be getting easier. Thanks again and all the best.
Always preferred the look of the RS over the GS. Practicality wise, the RS, also ticks that box as well, considering most GS owners, don't take them off road. Hey mate.. Good luck with that head space. You're right about motorcycling being good for your stress. Just remember, riding is also a mental thing, much more than driving. For me, if " i'm out of sorts"..{ i have anxiety, and a nervous condition}, i stay away from riding. Good luck friend.
👌 It is a great looking bike, I really like the front end! If you are not going off road then it is so worth considering the RS over the GS. Thanks so much I appreciate that. Motorbikes have been so good for my mental health and continue to help massively. I agree if you are feeling really bad and not safe to ride then defo, take some time before getting on the bike. I find atm it clears my head so well, like meditation. Thanks and all the best.
Thank you very much @RedAng for your video. I really like the RS but need to test it before I invest such an amount of money in a ride. Tested the GS and, despite the confort, I must say it didn’t inspire me… for that money you should be impressed about the feeling and the looks and I’m not quite there… Suzuki GT is also on my list for testing and comparing but, as you mentioned, shaft is definitively a plus! Quickshifter is another issue that should be addressed… In the meantime, I’ll keep enjoying my Tracer 700, a great bike for beginners. With regards to your situation, give it time and you’ll see brighter days 😉 Keep it up! Greetings from Madrid!
Hi it is my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! Absolutely if the GS did not impress you enough then it is a lot of money to spend on a bike that doesn't hit the spot. The RS definitely has it's bonuses over other sports tourers, however the quickshifter would be a problem for me. Highly recommend testing the Tracer 9GT, great bike 👍 Many thanks I appreciate that 🙌 Things seem to be leveling out a bit now so that is good. Hopefully a week or so more and I will have adjusted without the meds. Thanks and all the best
I’ve had a GS and an RT. I’d buy an RS but I had one as a loan bike and the wind noise and buffeting was horrendous. Maybe after market screen would help though.
Nice video.. and a lot of bike. I still say if they got rid of the sideways pistons they would sell a great deal more bikes. I see your following me now... I was at the Cliffton Suspension Bridge just a little while back, great view from the top and the cafe is nice too. As for the antidepressants.. they are not good news.. keep riding your bike Angus.. love the locations. Ride and stride Cheers
Thanks 👌 Yup it is a lot of bike haha. Could be a good cheaper option to a GS for someone who doesn't go off road. Personally I would have the GS! We will cross paths one day! Yup a stunning bridge and love a coffee at the cafe. Starting to adjust to being off the meds now I think, fingers crossed it gets better. Cheers

Why oh why do tubers keep comparing the rs to a gs……………….other than the engine they are totally different, chalk and cheese? I have never ever been into bmw bikes but bought a RS 18 months ago after testing a gs (boring) but also have ridden hayabusas since gen 1 and also now ride a full spec gen 2 busa blah blah blah………..the RS totally makes me smile every time I sit on it without even riding it 😂
Good review sir. I have had two GSA’s over the last five years, excellent bikes handle brilliant. I have reached the age when the weight of the bike nearly got the better of me, didn’t put it down but very close to it. So I now have the RS Sport in the garage, it was a tough decision but the smaller and lighter size of the RS I have found better for me. Power wise as good as the GSA, handling ‘nearly’ the same as I am not going off road the bike suits me lovey. I tour somewhere every year and I am confident the RS will do the business, very pleased with it, its worth test riding one if you want to stay with the brand if the GS a bit to much. Good stuff 👍
👍 Many thanks I appreciate it and glad you liked the review! I can definitely understand the GSA beginning to get on the heavier side. A great choice to go for the RS, obviously has its differences but also so similar to the GS in many ways. I think you won't be let down touring at all, it is still a very comfortable bike and although wind protection not quite as good as on the GS it is still good. Plus you still get that lovely boxer twin 😉 Cheers
@@kevinroberts2395 I bought the 1250 RS this summer and switched to an MDV Windscreen from Germany . Great protection , bought the screen with adjustable deflector and it is perfect , Good service from MDV as well.
@@kevinroberts2395 Hi Kevin, sorry for the late reply. I have changed the screen to a Givi its taller and wider without looking like a barn door !! I have it set in the top holes of the bracket but have it in the lower position, that suit my height just fine. The buffering in the chest is greatly reduced and nothing on my helmet just normal mild wind noise. It has improved the protection greatly (for me). Enjoy the bike they are great i love mine. 👍
Had five of these since 2015, quick shifter has never been an issue, then again I’ve never rode another manufacture with it. I now have a brand new one, has any one noticed it now has white flashing shift lights? Also now has a Sport option on the TFT with DTC and Brake force and also lean angle on the display?
Nice sounds like it has won you over completely 👍 Always good to find a bike that you like so much you can just stick with it! Best you don't try another QS!!
if you think shaft drive is better because of maintenance, you should check that specifically the one of the bmw is rusting frequently and maintenance for it is as anoying as the chain otherwise its an expensive fix.
Thanks that is a good point! I can imagine any maintenance needed on a shaft drive can be very expensive. I hope the rusting is not a common thing for BMW shaft drive? Overall I think I see it as a bonus though.
hopefully not. we all love our machines however, even though bmw does not require you to check the shaft until certain km, i would open and check it frequently if i were you , just to be safe, the rubber boot link is not as sealed as it looks, leading the grease to disappear from the connection and the water to creep and make the rust. nice design, not so nice application. take care.
Nice video and review. Cool bike, never tried it. I went for S1000XR because of that beautiful engine and I love the bike. The quick shifter on XR is really good and better than on GS, probably its better with i4 engine than the boxer, not sure.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the video! It is an interesting bike and you don't see many of them around. Great option instead of a GS. Yes I am yet to ride the S1000XR but can imagine the engine is amazing. Quickshifters are always easier to get smoother on inline 4's 👍 All that torque low down I thing the quick shifter struggles on a boxer twin. Cheers
I Have recently bought the R1250 RT similar Bike but much more comfortable Try that one out, Great Review and Video and well done on highlighting and mentioning your mental health, we as Men should be talking about it a lot more, I hope you feel better soon with coming off your antidepressants, But don’t worry if you are not able to this time, what is important is keeping you Stable. Hope to see more of your videos soon, Take care and Ride Safe 👍👍👍🏍🏍🏍
Hi Tim, yes I feel like the RT is probably one of the best motorbikes on the market for touring right now! Will definitely try one out very soon. I am not 100% sold on the looks, however dynamically wise I think it would be incredible! Many thanks I appreciate that 🙌 Absolutely mental health should be talked about more, especially men. Had a bit of a rough one the last week, however seem to be balancing out a bit now. Sticking with it for the time being and trying to remain positive. All the best and same to you.
Hi, yes I actually got it from a shop called Halfords. It is meant for bicycles!! Just fits most motorbikes so well 👍 Sorry no model name on the bag. They should sell it in all Halfords stores.
Props to you for doing a great review on the RS. Hope your mental health is doing well. When you said you wouldn't take this bike over other sport-touring bikes, which ones would you prefer?
Many thanks I appreciate it 👍 Glad you enjoyed the review. I was referring to the Kawasaki 1000SX and the Suzuki S1000GT. I just prefer the inline 4 cylinder engines in these two bikes over the boxer twin for traditional sports touring! Cheers
I really love your perspective on Motos. I am an old-school rider and have been riding 30 years. I have moved to ADV-style sport tourers over the years, but as an avid track day rider, I really appreciate the sport more than the tourer in "sport tourers" I like how much more involved I feel with a sport tourer. My sense is the sport tourer segment is going to make a comeback. Thinking about trading my Multi in on an RS! Curious how you think this RS stacks up against the Guzzi V100?
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoy the videos 👍 Yes I must admit a traditional sports tourer is great, comfortable and able to tour but still an edge of sportiness! Personally I would go for this RS over the Guzzi V100, think it just has the edge on performance and build quality etc... If you want something a bit different then the Guzzi is great 👍
I have owned three GS's over the years and they are indeed a great bike, but there are not more flickable than an RS.The 19 inch front wheel, 60mm more travel through a telelever set up makes the front feel very remote with little feedback coming through. They handle well but not as well as the RS in the bends. That with the increased weight and higher ride height make the RS a much better machine for tarmac which is where most GS's spend the majority of the time.
Nice video and I hope your mental health improves. You mentioned “Traditional tourers” a couple times, but why no mention of the RT? The GS, RS, and RT all have the same engine. I would like to see you review the RT and give your impressions. My 2022 RT now has 5000 miles and it is fantastic. Cheers.
Hi many thanks I appreciate it and glad you liked the video. The only reason I did not mention the RT is because I have never ridden one!! I feel like I would love it though 😁 Probably more so than the RS. I am not a massive fan of the looks of the RT, however I think subjectively it is probably one of the best bikes in the world! I shall schedule a ride. Cheers
@@redangrevival I understand what you mean about the looks. The RT is a beast and not the “Sexiest” looking bike I have ever seen, but the new revision (‘21-‘22) has improved the look slightly. And the electronic suite (Active cruise control, suspension, TFT, ride modes, etc.) are simply amazing. Yes, schedule a ride while the weather still allows. Once you get used to the low down weight you will find it quite nimble. Ride safe and cheers!
Nice vid, always liked this bike. Going to ask for one to demo when my GS is in for its service next. Can I ask what clamp you use for the gopro handle bar / yoke mount, and also the sticky mount you use for the HJC helmet?
👍It is definitely an interesting bike. It is very good but, I am the same as you, not completely sold on it either. Something does not quite gell. Many thanks I appreciate it. All the best to you.
First off I'm a GS man and now on my 3rd, but looked at the RS each time before buying the GS. I really liked the Lupin Blue RS when I bought my 1st GS but ultimately because I was going to be touring 2 up the GS was the better option for my pillion as she felt exposed on the RS with me leaning forward to the bars. The other things that put me off subsequent models were the drab colour options and laterally when I test rode the 1250 I didn't like the more sporty rider position as that restricted my view to the rear and having the higher viewpoint on the GS was a plus too. Yes you quickly get used to the sticky out cylinders! They're useful too if you drop it as the bike doesn't fall over so far as a traditional bike. Compared to the Kawasaki and Suzuli IL4s at real road speeds in the uk the RS with it's torgue definitely has the edge. Personally I don't have a problem with the QS, it's a trade off because of the shaft drive and all that torque which I'd rather have. It does learn your riding style so dors smooth out and when you need it 3rd-6th it's a real advantage. Now then.... the new RS for 2023 has the wider bar option plus better colour options so it could tempt me. I feel another test ride coming on. Oh and you don't save a few thousands as the RS SE isn't as well spec'd in standard form as a GS TE. To get the same you need to add the 3 packs which then gets it a lot closer price wise to the GS. Still a great bike though and for the road riding solo it's probably a better option.
I understand all your points and also agree 👍 I would personally go for a GS because of these reasons (and I love the adventure style!) Same very much looking forward to testing the new RS model. Really is a very good benefit to have the cylinders to lean on if you drop the bike! Great protection etc... Hope you get on well with your test of the 2023 model. Cheers
@RedAng Revival Thanks, my latest GS only has 3k on the clock due to covid and not being able to ride it much over the last 2 years and at 66 I'm not intending buying another but the RS could tempt me if the riding position is more upright like the R or GS. The cyliders do need protecting though as the covers are easily penetrated by a stone etc. if you do drop it so either engine bars or MachineArt x-heads are a wise investment if owners want to avoid being recovered if they might think they'll drop it. Another thing I do is to mix the modes. If you select the mode you want for throttle responce, and abs etc on the Right bar yiu can then select a different setting for the suspension. E.g. select Road mode then change the suspension on the left bar switchgear to Dynamic if you're on a nice bit of road.
I almost pulled the trigger on the RS before I'd even tried one as I wanted a sports tourer for a change from a GS and adventure bikes. However the day before I sat on a stranger's bike at a cafe stop and have never been so disappointed. Don't ask me why, but I found it heavy and uncomfortable. The cylinders were horrible too. A few months later I bought a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 sx which is fantastic so far. If only it had a shaft drive though!
Lucky you sat on it first!! For a sports tourer I would also go for the Ninja 1000sx, just love the inline 4 and way it rides 👍 I think the BMW boxer twin is more suited to the GS. Wish more bikes had shaft drive! Cheers
I can relate to what you describe. I have no direct experience with the RS except for sitting on one in the show room and I didn’t like the ergonomics, too stretched for my frame. I come from a R1250GS which I owned for two years. I did a lot of touring on it, 36 000 km and was eyeing the S1000XR as my next ride but somebody told me that the Ninja 1000sx was a similar proposition for less money. After reading a few flattering comparaisons between the XR and the Ninja (flattering for the Ninja, that is), I rode one for three hours and there was no going back to the GS. I love the Ninja, have been to the Alps with it, do touring, weekends, commuting. The only thing I miss is the shaft drive on long rainy trips. The GS compared to what I’ve heard about the RS is the more flickable proposition as the wheelbase is shorter and the steering angle sharper.
Same I am very interested to see the improvements on the tracer 👍 That is a really good question! I think I would go for the Tracer 9GT. Just prefer the upright riding position and the triple engine. The BMW is a more premium bike, but I would still go for the Tracer.
@@redangrevival thanks for the reply. That's also my thoughts. I did try the 1000xr but I didn't get on with it. Loved the tiger 900gt but don't like the boxes for panniers
@@christophereaves7108 No problem. Same I really like the Tiger 900 as well. The Tracer is a brilliant bike and the new update should be even better. Cheers
I think the clunky quick shifter is a characteristic of bigger twins. My previous KTM Super Duke GT had a "clunky" QS especially at lower revs/lower gears. They'll never be as smooth as the I4 quick shifters.
Thanks 👍 It is a very impressive bike with all of the tech you ever need (bar radar cruise control)! Definitely not a beginner's bike! Highly recommend taking a look at the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 if you get the chance. Great value for money and a great ride. Cheers
Looks nicer than the GS but Im thinking probably to me a poor second I'm thinking . interesting review tho RR and good luck with the drop off meds .I'v done it too but not sure it's been a good idea for me tho .Still like ya say keep on keeping on 😉👍
I am not too sure, it is basically a GS but 100% road focused. I would personally have a GS over it because I love the adventure styling (like most people)! Thanks so much, it was tough the first week but things seem to be leveling out a bit now. Hopefully my body will adjust ok. Absolutely don't stand still and keep moving forward. I am finding that mindfulness breathing is really helping 👍 Thanks and all the best, stay positive
I’ve the 1200 RS and will be upgrading this year. Agree with the turning on the RS. It’s so wide. I’m now between 1250 RS and GS. I was driving alongside the GS when last touring and it looked so huge on the road, it almost put me off 😂 I tour a lot and the RS has been so good to me I’ll probably stick with RS
Yes the RS has more of that traditional sports tourer turning circle (big)! Sounds like you are enjoying the RS and could be a sensible decision to stick with it. Could always take a GS for a test ride and see what you think of it 👍
That’s not really a review now is it? First impressions after a quick ride. The RS needs more than that to get to anything like grips with it. I owned a GSA and now have an RS and to say it’s not smooth is ludicrous. For a twin it’s buttery smooth without any really intrusive vibes. I find mine with very few faults and have little criticism. That’s the only time in 35 years I’ve been able to say that. Screen is the one thing I’ll change because of the buffeting. MRA XFlow Vario is on my shopping list. Satnav cradle is too low and bars a little too forward. It could have done with twin usb power sockets in the cockpit but that’s easily remedied. Other than that? Faultless. GS is more flickable but not as planted nor has it as much feedback. The. RS has that classic planted spirts tourer feel which is reassuring. It’s safe handling, in fact it handles far better than you’d expect and with decent tyres like Roadtech 01 se’s or Roadsmart 4’s. Turning circle is not at all bad and no worse than many spirts bikes. Nothing whatsoever wring with quick shifter. You, like a lot of vloggers, simply use it wrongly! It should be used from second gear upwards with wide open throttle. Downshifts need full closed throttle. Then it works perfectly. River is the Avon, not the Severn, so more homework needed on geography😂 The RS imho is a far better road bike than the GS. It’s a better tourer too and feet flat is reassuring. All day comfortable and can keep up with most spirts bikes A to B over long distances without criplling the rider. Midrange is huge, overtakes a breeze and that boxer lump has charm and character. I miss the more upright position and armchair comfort on my GSA, also the superb full led lights and the talker riding position enabling you to see over traffic. I don’t miss it’s bulk nor it’s tip toe tall seat when at a standstill where you sometimes need to be wary if adverse cambers or you’ll drop it. Handling is good on both but the RS is better overall. Lighter weight and different gearing = more rapid acceleration. It’s a superb motorcycle and deserves to be more popular than it is.
I love KTM and for the time being I'm more focused on roadsters, actually I'm on a SDR 1290 R EVo. Nevertheless, if I was on the market for a sport touring I'd probably pick up this bike rather than the GT sibling of my Superduke. A really nice package, we'll see if KTM is going to really improve the current bike (the GT I mean) for the next version ✌
👌 KTM's are fantastic, just love their V-Twins! I am yet to ride a KTM GT, but can imagine it is very nice. However I am not a fan of the looks and the build quality on the BMW is amazing. Agreed hopefully KTM improve the GT soon. Cheers
2017 GS owner. Other than cosmetics, I can't think of a reason to choose the RS over a GS. The GS is better for "touring"(more comfortable ergos) and is more "flickable" in the twisties and easier to turn in tight spots. Perhaps, if you're not tall(lower handgrips and shorter foot peg distance on the RS) and all you're going to do is ride pavement, the RS saves you some $$.
I think that is it, if you are just riding on the road then you can save yourself a few thousand pounds, but still get most of what the GS is about. I do like the RS as a different option to the GS, however personally I would prefer the GS 😉
I wonder if BMW is going to continue the RS, just got a list of what will be improved on all BMW motorcycle models for 2023 and the RS wasn't even on the list. This list was officially released by BMW so as an RS fan it kind of scares me! :O :'(
It is a great bike. To be honest though you don't see many of them around, which suggests the sales figures may not be great. It is unfortunate but I would not be surprised if they discontinued it 🥴
@@redangrevival Thanks for the comment RedAng, that is also what I am afraid of. I am not a GS guy, I just want to stay on the road and also don't really want an RT because I use my bike to commute or even shopping and only doing short travels so the RS is the perfect 'light' bike. Unfortunately you're right, don't see too many of them around so their future is in the air ... :( Thanks for the review!
The review was fine, it's not my sort of bike. BMWs are expensive and thief magnets but each to their own. I got to sit on a Triumph Scrambler 900 the other day and I was grinning like an idiot. Such a beautiful bike. I know it may sound obvious but make sure you eat properly and get enough sleep when you come off meds. The bike will give you the fresh air and daylight which also helps. I take high dose Vit C and B Complex which helps for me. Look after yourself and ride safe. ML&R.
Thanks, glad the review was up to scratch 👍 Was worried about that! I personally prefer the GS! Think it has more character and I prefer the adventure looks. Yup especially the GS's get stolen A LOT! I used to own the Triumph Street Scrambler 900, fantastic bike. I sold it for an Africa Twin, with I hadn't. I had the Matt green colour, such a great looking and riding bike. I did drop it going off road a few times! Not really meant for that though. Many thanks, no that is great advice. Easily over looked to not get enough sleep and eat healthily. Was a bit shaky at first first but seem to be leveling off a bit now 👍 Shall see how it goes.
This Scrambler is called Hetty and she is....matt green! With bar end mirrors, a black headlight grill and a beautiful ribbed black leather seat.. She goes all over the North Devon lanes. I guess she could do a green lane if it was fairly level but they are a bit heavy for steep off roads. Sounds like you're coming all good now. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Stay strong and be true to yourself 👊🏻
@@lilynorthover8378 👌She sounds like a beauty!! Yes they are not ideal for off road use. Just some light gravel tracks really. Yup finger crossed. Thanks
The GS will always be first choice for the Ewan’s and Charlie’s going the longway round to Tescos at the weekend , but for the rest of us the RS is a far better bike , even more so with a set of handlebar risers …. All day comfortable 👍👍
I would suggest the better solution: the comfort of the gs riding position, with 17 inch front wheels, all the goodies and a perfect quickshifter: the S1000XR. I ride mine for over 25k kms a year in all year all weather. The rs has to much weicht on the wrist for me (, 56 years old, 1m90 and 120kg.)
I was thinking more along the lines of a R1250xr would be my choice. That Inline 4 with its high rpm and high power is not my cup of tea. Bloody fast I will give it that. Just for just taking it easy the boxer wins
@@LonelyTreeSunset and some back lite switch gear. It's probably because bmw are using the same switch gear they started using in 2013> if it does go back-lit maybe we can retro back-lit our older bikes
👌 Yes a great option and very interesting. I am yet to ride one but have it on the list! I suppose some people just really want that boxer twin from the GS. Good to hear that you ride all year round as well. Cheers
I have both. The GS is a better long distance on-road tourer given much more legroom and more upright riding position and more luggage capacity. By comparison, the RS is a (brilliant) sport tourer and while both are fantastic handlers on road, the RS gets the nod there. I disagree that the RS is a better road bike - it just depends on what you like and what you use it for.
👍 Unless you are comparing like for like bikes in the same segment then it is hard to say which is really better! As you say down to personal experience really. I would go for the GS!
Nice review on the MBW 1250 RS! Thanks for it. This is a very road capable bike, and specially for fast touring distances in proper conditions asphalted roads, of course. The driveshaft is always a big feature to have on a bike. The bike as a sporty body position and gives you immediately that kind of feeling but with that engine it is really different from every other market proposals of this segment and makes it unique in that sense. Never had one, maybe I will try one this coming year. I’ve had too GS’s the 1200cc and the 1250 cc, very capable but I always took note of the absence of passion when riding those two bikes, and I think that there weren’t issues, just a matter of personal taste or preferences. Although I think that for bigger bikers the bike looks maybe not so spacious for a rider, pillion and luggage… Concerning the mental health subject, for me I had my share of that. Episodic situations, related to the loss of dear persons, which is a cause of depression that never went away for good, but it’s manageable. There are other “ropes” of depression more difficult to address, the kind that manifest it self without a certain cause or origin, that is a big trap. The meds alone, don’t work for me and riding a lovely bike helps a lot to fight this illness state, at least it works to prevent or to avoid things getting deeper or harder to deal with. Very nice review on this fine BMW motorcycle, it motivated me to test ride it. I think I will do it, for sure. Thanks once more for pleasant and well done video 💪💪
Hi thanks so I appreciate it and really pleased you enjoyed the video. Sounds like you have lots of experience with the boxer engine! The 1250RS is definitely an interesting ride 👍 Mental health issues can be so hard, I hope you manage ok and can continue to find relief from motorcycling. All the best and take care
@@redangrevivalI did 300 miles around the moors and Ilkley direction yesterday on the SX. Got home and found out I had an hour to spare so did an extra hour, I could have ridden much more. I feel myself wanting to know how the RS rides, I think a long test ride would be enough. One day.
Excellent review! Congratulations on getting off of the antidepressants...my advice; take a tea spoonful of Lion Mane Mushroom powder daily. It has helped my "forever" depression and made me a generally happy person. God Speed👍
Thanks so much I really appreciate it 👍 Not going to lie, it has been a bit of a struggle but I am getting there! Thanks I have heard of Lions Mane actually, will look into it. Cheers and all the best
@@redangrevival I feel safer in that position. I can see over the cars and trucks in front of me. I also feel I’m able to handle an emergency off road or power slide easier because of my body position. And yes, I’ve had to do both before. On a Harley it was a bit tricky.
RS's seating position is not good for long distance riding. Screen is way too small. Pegs are way too back. Also, the break dive is unlike any other BMW. NOT a long distance tourer for sure.
For me its nice to hear that there are other ppl fighting depression with bikes 😁
🙌 Thanks glad you can relate. Motorbikes have been so good for me recovering, just find them so healing. Stay well
@@redangrevival thank you, I wish u well also.
My wife passed away nearly 6 months ago, my therapist is a KTM 690 Enduro R
A mate of mine just bought his first bike. Because of that he asked the doctor if he can go off the anti-depressants. He agreed but told him there would be side effects. Hasn't experienced any and is feeling better than ever. Here's to motorcycle therapy.
Thanks for the review and acknowledgement of depression. Cheers to you!
Cheers
And why didn’t you choose the RT as a full road bike ? Was the price the main factor ?
Haha I completely agree! I think the main reason people ride adventure bikes is because of their comfort and commanding riding position 👍
Cheers
Enjoyed the ride out with you here. It’s nice to jump on for a ride when things are a bit bleak, works for me every now and then
🙌 many thanks glad you enjoyed it!
Spot on and why I went from an R1200RT to a GSA in 2008. One brief ride and it felt so “right”. At the time I was a mere 49!
👍 there really is something great about how the GS rides. I am 33 and already considering one haha
Thanks for this vid man! You are doing great! Keep going! Looking forward to the next review/adventure. Cheers!
👍 It is my pleasure, glad you liked it! Thanks so much I appreciate that. Onwards and upwards. Cheers

Sounds like you are happy with your change of bike 👍 Exactly one of the main benefits of the RS, so much easier to handle day to day! Enjoy
don't use quick shifter until you are at 3000 revs or above on up shift .pretty smooth on down shift from higher revs.
Cheers
The RS is the one I got. Very happy with it
Good choice, nice to find people having the RS over the GS and being happy with their decision!
Great vid. Keeping them coming and keep riding. Always makes me feel better!
🙌 Thanks so much I appreciate it and really glad you enjoy the videos
Short but slick. Really like your reviews. Stay well
👌 Absolutely, a shorter/slicker GS! Many thanks I appreciate that.

Thank you very much @RedAng for your video. I really like the RS but need to test it before I invest such an amount of money in a ride.
Tested the GS and, despite the confort, I must say it didn’t inspire me… for that money you should be impressed about the feeling and the looks and I’m not quite there…
Suzuki GT is also on my list for testing and comparing but, as you mentioned, shaft is definitively a plus!

With regards to your situation, give it time and you’ll see brighter days 😉 Keep it up!

Hi it is my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! Absolutely if the GS did not impress you enough then it is a lot of money to spend on a bike that doesn't hit the spot.

Johnnywoo. I've just bought an R1200RS for the same reason. Interested in knowing if you change the screen to get better wind protection.
Best you don't try another QS!!
if you think
shaft drive is better because of maintenance, you should check that specifically the one of the bmw is rusting frequently and maintenance for it is as anoying as the chain otherwise its an expensive fix.
Thanks that is a good point! I can imagine any maintenance needed on a shaft drive can be very expensive. I hope the rusting is not a common thing for BMW shaft drive?
Overall I think I see it as a bonus though.
hopefully not. we all love our machines however, even though bmw does not require you to check the shaft until certain km, i would open and check it frequently if i were you , just to be safe, the rubber boot link is not as sealed as it looks, leading the grease to disappear from the connection and the water to creep and make the rust. nice design, not so nice application. take care.
@@rumorscameras Cheers
Nice video and review. Cool bike, never tried it. I went for S1000XR because of that beautiful engine and I love the bike. The quick shifter on XR is really good and better than on GS, probably its better with i4 engine than the boxer, not sure.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the video! It is an interesting bike and you don't see many of them around. Great option instead of a GS.
Yes I am yet to ride the S1000XR but can imagine the engine is amazing. Quickshifters are always easier to get smoother on inline 4's 👍
All that torque low down I thing the quick shifter struggles on a boxer twin. Cheers
I Have recently bought the R1250 RT similar Bike but much more comfortable Try that one out,
Great Review and Video and well done on highlighting and mentioning your mental health, we as Men should be talking about it a lot more,
I hope you feel better soon with coming off your antidepressants, But don’t worry if you are not able to this time, what is important is keeping you Stable.
Hope to see more of your videos soon,
Take care and Ride Safe 👍👍👍🏍🏍🏍
Hi Tim, yes I feel like the RT is probably one of the best motorbikes on the market for touring right now! Will definitely try one out very soon. I am not 100% sold on the looks, however dynamically wise I think it would be incredible!
Many thanks I appreciate that 🙌 Absolutely mental health should be talked about more, especially men. Had a bit of a rough one the last week, however seem to be balancing out a bit now. Sticking with it for the time being and trying to remain positive.
All the best and same to you.
Stick with it Angus. You are a good guy.
🙌 Thanks so much, I am still keeping on and improving slowly. Cheers
Hi. Please could you tell me what the make of the handlebar bag is. I could really use one of those. Thanks.
Hi, yes I actually got it from a shop called Halfords. It is meant for bicycles!! Just fits most motorbikes so well 👍
Sorry no model name on the bag.
Cheers
@@redangrevival Much appreciated! The S1000GT is a deal for the price.
If you want something a bit different then the Guzzi is great 👍
@@redangrevival for sure, well i love the Guzzi quirkiness. So bought one yesterday 👌 Btw i love your awareness and openness about mental health Mate.
@@KiwiMoto72 Congrats and hope you love the bike 👍 Its a special ride
Good video mate!!🔥
Thumbs up and much support from my side!
👍 Many thanks I appreciate it. Glad you liked the video and thanks so much for the support. Cheers
Nice vid, always liked this bike. Going to ask for one to demo when my GS is in for its service next. Can I ask what clamp you use for the gopro handle bar / yoke mount, and also the sticky mount you use for the HJC helmet?
Thanks I appreciate it 👍 I use the following GoPro clamp amzn.to/3wNlLsT

What revs are you doing at 70mph in top please? Good of you to share your situation. We all suffer to a degree and finding joy is key. Best wishes.
Sorry I actually can’t remember that exactly! I can say it is very comfortable at 70mph 👍 Many thanks I appreciate it and good health to you
How about legroom. Is the knee angle sharp?
Hi, leg room is not bad at all. But obviously compared to the GS it is not as comfortable or roomy! By no means is it sports bike angle.
@@redangrevival like i though
Interesting, not sure for me though. Congratulations on your progress, Keep on biking. 😎

Nice review. Thanks

Respect dude. Tuff it out with the medication.
👍 Thanks so much mate. Appreciate it!

Is there something from sport?
Great job and kudos for the mental health check in. We all need to increase our awareness
Thanks so much I appreciate that and glad you enjoyed the video. All the best to you 👍
Do you think that is a good choice for a 1,93 cm tall rider?
I think you would be more comfortable on the GS. However I do not think you would find the RS uncomfortable.
Always a Rocky road on the way down but then you go up again, been there just shout and say what you like.
👌 Thanks for the support. Yup think I am starting to level out now, hopefully start feeling better in next week or so. Cheers
Which one would you pick for comfort and performance specially for torque? The multistrada v2s or this rt?
V2S for comfort and BMW for torque!
The GS compared to what I’ve heard about the RS is the more flickable proposition as the wheelbase is shorter and the steering angle sharper.
im currently waiting on the Tracer update for next year, but would you choose the RS over the Tracer GT?
Cheers
Great video. You just gotta ask yourself: "What would Steve McQueen do?" Then go for it!
Many thanks I appreciate it and glad you liked the vid! Haha absolutely, sounds like a great life moto 👌
I think the clunky quick shifter is a characteristic of bigger twins. My previous KTM Super Duke GT had a "clunky" QS especially at lower revs/lower gears. They'll never be as smooth as the I4 quick shifters.
Yes it definitely is. However the new KTM'S QS is great and much smoother than the Boxer twins! Hopefully BMW will improve on it for the next model 👍
Very nice! Maybe too many features for me but only still a beginner really. Saw my first Bonny up close today and some Hondas👍
Thanks 👍 It is a very impressive bike with all of the tech you ever need (bar radar cruise control)! Definitely not a beginner's bike! Highly recommend taking a look at the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 if you get the chance. Great value for money and a great ride. Cheers
@@redangrevival On my list with the Scram, Moto Morini x cape, Zontes 350 GK...🤞
Great work 👍the name of the dealership as got to be a joke !? I’m sure you’ll be feeling good very soon 👍
Hi Paul, many thanks I appreciate it 👍 Haha it really is called that!! Don't know how they have pulled it off.
Thanks very much.
I’ve the 1200 RS and will be upgrading this year. Agree with the turning on the RS. It’s so wide. I’m now between 1250 RS and GS. I was driving alongside the GS when last touring and it looked so huge on the road, it almost put me off 😂
I tour a lot and the RS has been so good to me I’ll probably stick with RS
Yes the RS has more of that traditional sports tourer turning circle (big)! Sounds like you are enjoying the RS and could be a sensible decision to stick with it.
Could always take a GS for a test ride and see what you think of it 👍
I am 5’10 and wondering if it will be suitable for long rides in terms of leg position and seating. Great video. Thanks.
Many thanks I appreciate it 👍 I think you would be ok on longer rides. It is far from a sports bike riding position!
Exellent review.👌🏻
Thank you 🙌
That’s not really a review now is it?
River is the Avon, not the Severn, so more homework needed on geography😂
The RS imho is a far better road bike than the GS.
@@tibork3845 My pleasure 👌

👌 Yes I found it very comfortable as well. Maybe not as good wind protection as the GS but still not bad at all!
It's trump card over the competition is the shaft drive, very nice review, take of urself

I do need a 1250GS on my daily starbucks coffee run.
Can you imagine suddenly having to traverse a gravel patch on tarmac with a 1250RT.
😂
Yup, I know right!
use quickshifter for upper gears above 5k rpm .
Yes works much better and that is what it is designed for really!
I think the new M1300GS might fill that gap. Hoping for a Multi Pikes Peak equivalent.
Cheers
That would also be an interesting concept! Suppose BMW need to make some bikes with out the boxer haha
Would the RS make a nice motorway muncher?
Yes absolutely 👍 Not as comfortable as the GS though
I have both. The GS is a better long distance on-road tourer given much more legroom and more upright riding position and more luggage capacity. By comparison, the RS is a (brilliant) sport tourer and while both are fantastic handlers on road, the RS gets the nod there. I disagree that the RS is a better road bike - it just depends on what you like and what you use it for.
👍 Unless you are comparing like for like bikes in the same segment then it is hard to say which is really better! As you say down to personal experience really.
I would go for the GS!
The obvious sibling for the RS is the RT, not the GS. Still, nice review!
Yes I know, but think the GS is just so popular and the RS deserves a bit more attention. A possible option! Thanks 👍
Top video.. thanks..
Thanks so much I appreciate it 👍
Nice review on the MBW 1250 RS!
Although I think that for bigger bikers the bike looks maybe not so spacious for a rider, pillion and luggage…
Concerning the mental health subject, for me I had my share of that.
The 1250RS is definitely an interesting ride 👍
Mental health issues can be so hard, I hope you manage ok and can continue to find relief from motorcycling. All the best and take care

I take mine on forest service roads just fine
RS's seating position is not good for long distance riding. Screen is way too small. Pegs are way too back. Also, the break dive is unlike any other BMW. NOT a long distance tourer for sure.
Fair enough, I suppose it depends on how tall you are! I could do long miles on this but would definitely be more comfortable on a GS.
