    Hey! In this video I compare the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X to the Robinson R66. A fierce battle between the two best single engine turbine helicopters on the market today. The Garmin suite in the 505 or the cost savings in the R66, I tell you which one you should choose and why!

    Bell has service available virtually everywhere. While Robinson may have good service ability, anyone who can work on a 206 or a 407 can work on the 505. Yes bell and robinson have different operating methods and yes they are both good companies you need to consider, Robinson is the Toyota and Bell is the Super Duty. Both good. Both get the job done but for work and all day comfort, from these two, go with the Bell. The 505 is a great personal helicopter especially for hot and high. The 407 and 429 are work horses, also great performers and very quiet and comfortable. One thing you forgot is that the 505 is significantly quieter inside. Noise contributes considerably to fatigue. So if you just want a personal helo and don't plan on too many all day flights the R66 will do you fine but if you are flying many hours regularly you will want to look hard at the 505. Be safe.

    I'm an instructor in the 505 and appreciate you taking the time to put together this video. Several of the owners that come in for transition training do this exact cross-shopping. A lot of them have told me that when they first start looking, they'll see that the Robinson is $500k+ cheaper for what looks, on paper, like a very comparable aircraft. However, once they fly both helos, they say it's not even close and are happy to spend the extra money. I've never flow Robinsons so I don't have a personal opinion on them, but I will say that the 505 is probably the most impressive machine I've flown in almost 20 years of flying helicopters.
    Also, fun fact: The "505 SHP" is a number that Bell puts out on its manufacturers data, but we have no idea where that number came from. The actual numbers are: 451 SHP Continuous, 492 SHP Takeoff Power, 516 SHP ECU limited, and 536 SHP maximum. Keep in mind the transmission is rated considerably lower than that (428 SHP continuous and 475 SHP takeoff). Pretty sure the 505 SHP was a marketing tool, especially because the name of the helicopter came first and has nothing to do with the power.

    I have an R66 and R44, really like 505... hard to compare the two. Bell is hands down beefier, faster, more aggressive... r66 is very nice, a smooth executive feel, but the 505, you get that stronger military vibe. Oh, a million more, there's that... 🤙

    The r66 is the most realistic option for private ownership. Make no mistake, most people will need to fly somebody else's helicopter to make it affordable, but if you're dead set on owning your own there's just not a lot of people that can stomach the price tag of the bell. You can get a used r66 for half a million dollars.

    Bell 505 wins hands down. Bell has been the gold standard in helicopters for years. The crazy Robinson T-Bar cyclic which I hate is always a deal breaker to me. Having FADEC and glass cockpit further gives the advantage to Bell. More money but I feel it offers far more safety.

    Don't forget autorotation performance, the bell with it's higher inertia, tried and tested longranger rotor,is far superior in this aspect and to some degree even better than the AS350 , you could be at flight idle in the 505 , cut the power back (how you'd do this with the FADEC I don't know) , raise the collective turn about 180° and put put it back down again ( the huey could do about a 360° turn apparently). In the Robinson this would not be possible . Naturally circumstances would have to be the right ones for this sort of demonstration to occur

    • @laz288
      @laz288 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MD520 is in its own category. Compared to the 505 it has a much smaller interior, no storage compartment, more cramped back seat, much less visibility in the rear due to the broom closet (controls closet in the middle) and it has a much lower range than the 505. The MD520 and 530 are my favorite helicopters as they are considered the sports car of the sky. So what ever you give up in a sports car (corvette, etc) you give up in the MD520 but you gain all the other benefits that come with a sports car.

    R66 sells a lot due the 600K+ reduced cost and maintenance. Although all 2 bladed underslung helicopters can be subjected to tail boom strikes by low G maneuvers, seems the Robinson is more susceptible to this. There have been a lot of Robinson accidents with tail boom strikes in the past few years.
    IMO the 505 is a superior helicopter in many ways and is almost a 100% new design from the Jet Ranger (aside from the rotor design) . The R66 is just a turbine version of the R44 which goes back to 1990 which was a revision on the R22 from 1979. Robinsons selling point it the price so I do not see them every making a 100% new design.

    With 130 hours instruction given in a -505 (6,000+ total hours, ATP, CFII, checked out in 85+ models of aircraft) I can state unequivocally the BH-505 is a PoS. It is like a Yugo with rotor blades. During the 90-days I managed one, we had multiple failures and warranty claims. Fit and finish is terrible (they even forgot to install the door lock tumblers at the factory). A significant hydraulic leak with associated damage to tthe cabin roof (and complying with the subsequent AD) held up the sale.
    I have flown nearly everything in the Bell line and love their aircraft but the -505 is a not worthy of this great company. They designed the -505 solely to compete on price with the R-66. Bell ended up building a crappy helicopter with horrible engineering and even worse build standards, instead of building a far superior performing helicopter and pricing it slightly higher.

    before i bought my 2024 bell 505 i looked at the robinson to me it is crap. too tall a mast and the controls are wierd. a very ugly helicopter. i had several old jet rangers over the years. so i know how they fly. the new bell 505 is much much easier to fly. startup is totaly brain dead. hit a button and off she firesup. and it is simple to fly. the robinson is just a strange thing. and they crash more than any other helicopter. Australia from what i read almost banned them for being unsafe. and bell sent their test pilot to basically retrain me for 2 weeks. he wouldnt leave till he felt i knew what i was kinda doing. , where i live i will not fly in the winter so it sits in its heated barn here at me ranch.i will tell you this. robinson is a very very ugly helicopter. and harder to fly than the new jet ranger. oh robinson tried to get me to buy one. the day they came here it was cold and windy. not blowing over 15 knts. they had a hell of a time landing it. they did everything but buy me a hooker to buy it.2 weeks later bell showedup. it was windy and very cold that morning. think the wind was blowing around 25-30 knts no problem. landed sweet. i bought it well ordered it and the wait was not to long like 15 weeks. custom painted. then took her back east to have a custom headliner installed. andthicker front seats. now it fits like a glove. i fly her now that winter is about over 2-3 times a week around northern washington. and the new ranger is a sexy bird. the robinson is basically harder to fly that center cyclic is wierd. you want to know how bad the robinson is? see how many crash in southern calif when they are test flown, their quality control sucks fit and finish is terrible. my opinion ? just say sc rew it and do not waste your time. buy a bell 505. the fadec is sweet i now have over 60 hrs on her since i got her in sept of last year
