Noctowl is my least favorite becaue it has nothing special about in. No signature move, no alternate form, no interesting ability, nothing. It also has a boring design in my opinion.
Alexander plüss Pelipper isn’t complete trash (@ least for a playthrough team). He is a good water type for the first few gyms (if you don’t pick Swampert) until you can get Sharpedo or something stronger (which you often will need two water pokemon to beat Emerald if you don’t run an HM slave). I have also played Pelliper on a Mono-Water team run and he was really helpful for supporting Swampert in double battles and dealing with fighting and grass types.
Was my first ever shiny when I first played silver when it came out. After seeing Ash’s shiny noctowl in the anime I was convinced there was one just outside of New Bark Town, and incredibly luckily I found a shiny Hoothoot there after looking for only about an hour
fun fact: Pikipek was the 1st time I ever used a regional bird as I generally pass on them....until I decided to give Toucannon a try (and gave him a really stupid nickname with "Toucan't") and I don't regret using Toucannon

@Ghoul Gaming well Azumarill became OU in gen 6 because the complication's of getting both belly drum & aqua jet on him where no longer an issue plus he also became part fairy still I'm at least happy to see that Surf & Waterfall will always remain as moves we can team to our mon's as those are good moves...and as for Fly....well since HM's aren't a thing there isnt much of a reason to teach it
@@dorime669 That's not recoil. Recoil in Pokemon is when you take damage from a move your Pokemon used, such as brave bird, flare blitz, or head smash.
Staraptor is a BOSS. I always get rid of the Route 1 birds as soon as possible, but in Diamond, Staraptor was there until the very end, and he was never the weakest link. It's absurd how good he is.
Staraptor is the best bird hands down, although Corv is pretty lit...I think Skarmory has fulfilled its role as a steel flying but Corv may be used for different reasons
Some thoughts: -Keen Eye is a situational ability. Accuracy-lowering and evasion-boosting moves are rarely seen. Noctowl is better with Insomnia or Tinted Lens, while Toucannon is better with Skill Link. -Toucannon doesn't have a wide enough movepool to take advantage of Sheer Force. -I'd switch Corviknight and Staraptor's placements around. Corvikngiht's bulk and defensive typing is what makes it useful in Smogon and VGC formats. The set you showed is its Smogon Ubers set; I think you should have showed the standard OU set, which is as follows: Corviknight @ Leftovers Ability: Pressure EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 208 SpD Careful Nature - Iron Head/Brave Bird/Body Press - Defog - Roost - Body Press/U-turn
I don't think the current state of Sword and shield allows one to reasonably put Corviknight above Staraptor. With the DLC coming out and Pokemon home, the metagame is set to wildly shift, and we don't know how Corviknight is going to fair in it. Staraptor is consistent in it's usage, being in either OU or UU it's entire competitive lifespan (ban list to technically). After the rest of the roster gets into to sword and shield can we really say that Corviknight is Better then Staraptor. But to me as it stands. Staraptor is better
I wonder why nobody even mentions Mirror Armor, its such an amazing ability. On a similar note, i have never understood what makes Pressure good at all, to me its only good if youre a tanky pokemon thinking to PP stall your opponents. Otherwise its pretty useless, and like half of all legendary pokemon have it, even offensive ones like Mewtwo, which feels really unintuitive to me. So can someone please explain to me why Pressure is good? Like, in what situations would it be useful? And when would you prefer it over anything else?
@@babywizard9027 Corviknight is one of the better users of Pressure due to its good bulk. Other good users are Suicune, Zapdos, Moltres, Dialga, Mewtwo and Eternatus, as they use bulky sets sometimes.
@@babywizard9027 Mirror Armor is only good in Dynamax-legal formats, like VGC and Battle Stadium, where it can reflect the stat drops from Intimidate, Max Darkness, Max Phantasm, Max Wyrmwind, and Max Flutterby back at the opponent. Most of Smogon's formats ban Dynamax, meaning Mirror Armor has less usefulness there. Some moves have a chance to lower stats as a secondary effect, like Crunch's Defense drop, but this shouldn't be banked on for Mirror Armor's usefulness, as stat drops from those moves don't happen all the time. Pressure is generally the better option for Corviknight so it can PP stall high power, low PP moves in combination with Roost.
In My Opinion is: 8-Nocktowl 7-Pidgeott(No Mega Evolution) 6-Unfeazant 5-Touucanon 4-Swellow 3-Taloflame 2-Staraptor 1-Corviknight My favorite is Staraptor :)
excluding mega pidgeott/ pidgeott from the list id swap nocktowl w/ unfeazant because nocktowl is not that bad in competitive battles. it is a really strong echoed voicer. it is practically a weaker swellow bit way better than unfeazant
Yeah, his options are a hit or miss for me. I like Unfezent and how there is actually a female version too. It actually shows sexual dimorphism. Kind of cool

I think pidgeot toucanon and noctowl should be below Unfezant, it's pretty fast and has a nice ability paired with a movepool that all things considered isn't terrible, Staraptor Swellow Corviknight and Talonflame are all better though in my opinion mega pidgeot I think is really insane, but pidgeot on its own absolutely blows
Why is Toucannon above Unfezant? Toucannon is slightly more powerful than Unfezant, but it’s just as frail as Unfezant and way slower to boot. Toucannon has a better move pool and much better abilities, but speed is extremely important for offensive Pokémon such as these two, and I feel that it makes Unfezant a better Pokémon in general (just look at Swellow)
lovethatdarkness yea, they are really close to the start of the game, being on the second route most people enter. I also think the pellipepper line should have also been on the list, appearing before swellow’s line.

@@laxusstrauss5945 Dynamax is banned. You were kind of right. Corviknight is Magnezone food. Its defenses arent that great to compensate for the firepower present post Pokemon Home. It will stay in OU i feel (like skarmory) but I still believe it will be better than Staraptor.
I used a Swellow on my team in my Omega Ruby playthrough and it was amazing! Nothing was able to outspeed it and it was really useful in double battles with my Swampert. (Although Super Training may have been why it was so strong.)

Michael A Burns fearow doesn’t have a big move pool. The most out there moves it learns are u-turn and drill run. Other moves are flying and normal types.
My favourite will always be Pidgeot, It's one of the first Pokémon I caught in my first playthrough of Pokémon heartgold, I named him after my parrot, and I loved him so much, I liked to imagine that this WAS indeed my parrot in game so I treated him the best. I always loved him, watching him evolve was like watching my child grow up. Yeah sure, If I hadn't named him after my parrot, maybe I wouldn't love him so much, but I surely would love him! I love birds in general, they're my favourite kind of animals, so any bird Pokémon got a like from me (except some Mystic already stated were terrible) and honestly I'll always love him, I have a Pidgeot plushie and I love it too much. Maybe he's not the strongest Pokémon, and maybe he is pretty common, but I'll always love him no matter what
I love swellow and think it is very underrated. It is my favorite regional bird, it doesn't matter if its the strongest or not cause it is a very good pokemon to use and deserves more attention
Agree with Staraptor being the best regional bird. I used it in my competitive team and he performed really well. Hope it'll make a comeback in Sword and Shield.
Completely disagree. Staraptor is just bad in competitive pokemon. Not as bad as unfeazant or noctowl, but definitely worse than talonflame, corviknight, mega Pidgeot or even swellow (guts+faccade really hurts). I get that fans love staraptor and I like it too, but putting it over corviknight with that fucking mirror armor is just wrong and biased
@@caitnostamas2040 The list isn't based on how good they are competitively. It's just based on their overall stats, abilities, and move pool. If this were based on how good in competitive play they were, then yes, Staraptor would not be at the top, but it's not about that.

Being ranked in a BL tier between 2 tiers isn't an example of a Pokemon being "bad" by any means, since it still means it's too strong to be in a lower tier. Having said that, a Pokemon can be bad within a certain tier, but that has less to do with it being actually bad and more to do with it not having great match-ups against the rest of the metagame around it; and don't forget that some lower tier Pokemon are still viable in higher tiers, too. To say it's bad competitively is akin to saying it doesn't have any worthwhile qualities at all, and if that were true, it would be a LOT worse in a much lower tier (such as a Pokemon in PU being bad in that meta).
toucannon is actually underrated, with the skill link ability it'll always hit bullet seed and stab fury attack 5 times. pair it with a swords dance and brave bird or drill peck, hold a quick claw and it can be a decent mon
Unfezant Male is my favourite Pokémon from Unova I love it, Pidgeot is also awesome and so is Swellow I like Noctowl as well and Toucannon was my saviour in Alola.
My favourite thing to do in ORAS was go into uber with Swellow with a Flame Orb and Guts, protect first turn then Bravebird and Facade to sweep Mega Rayquaza team's, granted I probably wasn't versing the greatest opponents but it was still fun to watch a full team of legendries get swept by a Swellow.
Well basically it depends how you use these birds in competitive and switches. Stats matter but all birds have different roles in building teams. In-game you can increase the respective stats by baton pass. You can easily sweep with noctowl too
I know I'm a year late, but an interesting bird fact. Corviknight is probably named after the crow and Jay scientific family, Corvidae. So it's a crow and utilizes knightly features in its design with the armor ect. So they named it Corviknight.
In anime it seems like reversed, Swellow is the strongest bird Pokemon Ash had where Starraptor can't win a single battle without type advantage (including weavile with close combat).

Lol. Swellow the strongest bird. Talonflame was literally the MVP of the Gym run (Had the most gyms of his Kalos mons and also the most winst in those, only gym it didn't had a win was in Grants).
Swellow won against fighting grass and bug types type and a donphan 😕 Staraptor always faced powerhouses like drapion and the OPiest ursaring ever created And don't compare move efectiveness such ×4 because that don't count in the anime If the opponent lost to a single move the anime would be borring
It's curious that nowadays nocktowl is one of the best 'cause he has access to hurricane and nasty plot with tinted lens and upgraded stats, I don't think he is the worst at all
tinted lens is nice but nasty plot won't help it much as it wouldn't be able to set up since it gets one shot. Even if it can set up it's still too slow and gets taken out before it can even attack. Hurricane is nice and all but has very low accuracy. If it misses you are pretty much dead, It might be better but still far away compared to the other birds
People often think that wingull and pelipper is not a regional bird despite seeing it first on route 103 but tailow is on route 102 which is later in the game
No mention of Fearow? He's an early bird too. And given the lack of the physical/special split in gen 1, as well as access to drill peck, I always felt like it outperformed Pidgeot.
@Darkwing Duck137: I would say that was true up until Pidgeot got it's mega evolution. Before then, it was completely forgettable and wasn't worth trying to use over anything else because it was all-around mediocre; but as soon as it could mega evolve, it suddenly became a really powerful threat that was even solid in OU. Fearow may have been better before then, but not by that much, to be completely honest.
Noctowl could have been a dark/flying type. That would have been more unique. Or even more it could have been psychic/flying, although that could be over powered in earlier generations.
I think corviknight has the potential to be number 1 especially with its hidden ability but it hasn't had that much time on the competitive scene to really showcase its potential so I would honestly say it and staraptor are about even right now
After using bulk up/roost corviknight with mirror armor, I can’t really say that any starter bird is better than it. It is pretty amazing at what it does.
My Talonflame at level 60 already has 200 speed in moon and it kicks ass. And it also uses grass move solar beam, acrobatic, fire blast, and flame charge. I truly love this pokemon.

I love Noctowl, it's one of my favourite pokemon so it pains me so much that it's terrible. In original gold and silver the only flying move it learned from leveling up was peck. It's like game freak wanted it to be useless.
I always felt that noctowl and swellow deserved a third stage evolution like the rest

I had Noctowl in my HeartGold Team. It came in Clutch for me many times!
The one thing that (almost) all the other early birds have that Noctowl doesn’t is a third evolution. That is all that is holding it back.

@@babywizard9027 Mirror Armor is only good in Dynamax-legal formats, like VGC and Battle Stadium, where it can reflect the stat drops from Intimidate, Max Darkness, Max Phantasm, Max Wyrmwind, and Max Flutterby back at the opponent. Most of Smogon's formats ban Dynamax, meaning Mirror Armor has less usefulness there.
Some moves have a chance to lower stats as a secondary effect, like Crunch's Defense drop, but this shouldn't be banked on for Mirror Armor's usefulness, as stat drops from those moves don't happen all the time. Pressure is generally the better option for Corviknight so it can PP stall high power, low PP moves in combination with Roost.
Staraptor is just a boss in everything, ESPECIALLY in the Mystery Dungeon series, where Agility is op af.

I think pidgeot toucanon and noctowl should be below Unfezant, it's pretty fast and has a nice ability paired with a movepool that all things considered isn't terrible, Staraptor Swellow Corviknight and Talonflame are all better though in my opinion mega pidgeot I think is really insane, but pidgeot on its own absolutely blows

Why is Toucannon above Unfezant? Toucannon is slightly more powerful than Unfezant, but it’s just as frail as Unfezant and way slower to boot. Toucannon has a better move pool and much better abilities, but speed is extremely important for offensive Pokémon such as these two, and I feel that it makes Unfezant a better Pokémon in general (just look at Swellow)

@@laxusstrauss5945 Dynamax is banned. You were kind of right. Corviknight is Magnezone food. Its defenses arent that great to compensate for the firepower present post Pokemon Home. It will stay in OU i feel (like skarmory) but I still believe it will be better than Staraptor.

I used a Swellow on my team in my Omega Ruby playthrough and it was amazing! Nothing was able to outspeed it and it was really useful in double battles with my Swampert. (Although Super Training may have been why it was so strong.)
Noctowl needs a regional variant. Give it the psychic/flying type.

Michael A Burns fearow doesn’t have a big move pool. The most out there moves it learns are u-turn and drill run. Other moves are flying and normal types.
My favourite will always be Pidgeot, It's one of the first Pokémon I caught in my first playthrough of Pokémon heartgold, I named him after my parrot, and I loved him so much, I liked to imagine that this WAS indeed my parrot in game so I treated him the best. I always loved him, watching him evolve was like watching my child grow up. Yeah sure, If I hadn't named him after my parrot, maybe I wouldn't love him so much, but I surely would love him! I love birds in general, they're my favourite kind of animals, so any bird Pokémon got a like from me (except some Mystic already stated were terrible) and honestly I'll always love him, I have a Pidgeot plushie and I love it too much. Maybe he's not the strongest Pokémon, and maybe he is pretty common, but I'll always love him no matter what

Completely disagree. Staraptor is just bad in competitive pokemon. Not as bad as unfeazant or noctowl, but definitely worse than talonflame, corviknight, mega Pidgeot or even swellow (guts+faccade really hurts). I get that fans love staraptor and I like it too, but putting it over corviknight with that fucking mirror armor is just wrong and biased
@@caitnostamas2040 The list isn't based on how good they are competitively. It's just based on their overall stats, abilities, and move pool. If this were based on how good in competitive play they were, then yes, Staraptor would not be at the top, but it's not about that.

Being ranked in a BL tier between 2 tiers isn't an example of a Pokemon being "bad" by any means, since it still means it's too strong to be in a lower tier. Having said that, a Pokemon can be bad within a certain tier, but that has less to do with it being actually bad and more to do with it not having great match-ups against the rest of the metagame around it; and don't forget that some lower tier Pokemon are still viable in higher tiers, too. To say it's bad competitively is akin to saying it doesn't have any worthwhile qualities at all, and if that were true, it would be a LOT worse in a much lower tier (such as a Pokemon in PU being bad in that meta).

toucannon is actually underrated, with the skill link ability it'll always hit bullet seed and stab fury attack 5 times. pair it with a swords dance and brave bird or drill peck, hold a quick claw and it can be a decent mon

My favourite thing to do in ORAS was go into uber with Swellow with a Flame Orb and Guts, protect first turn then Bravebird and Facade to sweep Mega Rayquaza team's, granted I probably wasn't versing the greatest opponents but it was still fun to watch a full team of legendries get swept by a Swellow.
Corviknight should be higher than staraptor. Staraptor has only ever been OUBL, while corviknight is one of the best pokemon in sword and shield.

Well basically it depends how you use these birds in competitive and switches. Stats matter but all birds have different roles in building teams. In-game you can increase the respective stats by baton pass. You can easily sweep with noctowl too

I know I'm a year late, but an interesting bird fact. Corviknight is probably named after the crow and Jay scientific family, Corvidae. So it's a crow and utilizes knightly features in its design with the armor ect. So they named it Corviknight.

It's curious that nowadays nocktowl is one of the best 'cause he has access to hurricane and nasty plot with tinted lens and upgraded stats, I don't think he is the worst at all
tinted lens is nice but nasty plot won't help it much as it wouldn't be able to set up since it gets one shot. Even if it can set up it's still too slow and gets taken out before it can even attack. Hurricane is nice and all but has very low accuracy. If it misses you are pretty much dead, It might be better but still far away compared to the other birds

No mention of Fearow? He's an early bird too. And given the lack of the physical/special split in gen 1, as well as access to drill peck, I always felt like it outperformed Pidgeot.
I guess since the first bird mon you encounter in gen 1 is Pidgey, Spearow didn't make the cut same for wingull
@Darkwing Duck137: I would say that was true up until Pidgeot got it's mega evolution. Before then, it was completely forgettable and wasn't worth trying to use over anything else because it was all-around mediocre; but as soon as it could mega evolve, it suddenly became a really powerful threat that was even solid in OU. Fearow may have been better before then, but not by that much, to be completely honest.
Noctowl could have been a dark/flying type. That would have been more unique. Or even more it could have been psychic/flying, although that could be over powered in earlier generations.

I think corviknight has the potential to be number 1 especially with its hidden ability but it hasn't had that much time on the competitive scene to really showcase its potential so I would honestly say it and staraptor are about even right now
After using bulk up/roost corviknight with mirror armor, I can’t really say that any starter bird is better than it. It is pretty amazing at what it does.

My Talonflame at level 60 already has 200 speed in moon and it kicks ass. And it also uses grass move solar beam, acrobatic, fire blast, and flame charge. I truly love this pokemon.

I love Noctowl, it's one of my favourite pokemon so it pains me so much that it's terrible. In original gold and silver the only flying move it learned from leveling up was peck. It's like game freak wanted it to be useless.
