I tried and failed maylene multiple times... I realised way too late that you could have used a houndoom or kirlia for lucario because they both appear near her gym.

he is the easiest but he's not to be underestimated, for example, if you think you go against him with a lower level piplup (say like level 13 similar to Turtwig as it can destroy Roark's Team at that level due to Razor Leaf) you might kill his first two easily, but Cranidos won't go down so easily to bubble and can hit back really hard.
the guy who I watched nuzlocke platinum lost half his team battling her, if his Scizor hadn't gotten lucky with Bullet Punch at the last minute even if would've gone down to snow cloak and maxed out evasiveness thanks to double team, it was so painful to watch that I swore that the next time I played platinum myself...i'd tear her to pieces.
And lucario is semi late game. You get it before the 6th gym but as an egg. Then you need to hatch the egg and evolve riolu. The hard part is you happiness to evolve it. It's not hard it will just take a while if you want to use it early.
Rowan Yeah I can understand arguments against Lucario and Gallade since they’re late game, but Toxicroak? I looked up it’s Gen 4 stats the other day and was pleasantly surprised. It’s not too bulky, but it outclasses Machoke in every other stat. Honestly, I can see why Saturn has one as his ace.
Morgan Gobin Croagunk is somewhat rare in the Safari Zone and you face two gym battles where a fighting type could be useful before you get to Pastoria City so using a Machoke is reasonable

Acting as if you used Turtwig other than Roark and Crasher Wake is cute, but very inaccurate. Turtwig is the worst starter in Sinnoh. Your best grass move in Pearl is Razor leaf cause everything else is special, and you can never do much against team galactic without earthquake which you only get as a Torterra and still can't hit their Golbats, seeing how both the TM for Rock Slide and Stone Edge are always way too far in the game.

Bronzor can learn Solar Beam and Sunny Day, and it literally only has one weaknesses because if it abilities and it's Gen 4 where Steel resists Dark and Ghost.
Normally in Pokemon games, I get a Fire Type, Water Type, Grass Type, Flying Type, Electric Type, and a slot for another type, and I go through that almost the entire game while switching some Pokemon out every once in a while.
I honestly don’t remember Maylene giving me any problems as a kid. I usually had a Monferno with me and that did the trick. Fantina, though... completely different story.
Idk why her turtwig wasn’t a grotle honestly. In D/P it’s level 19, and level 20 in PT...turtwig evolves in the mid teens (I dont remember the exact level) so her having a turtwig makes no sense lol
One word for Candice - Lucario. You don’t need Infernape to sweep her. Also saying the ‘the most common fire type choice is Ponyta’ is an understatement, it was the ONLY fire type choice
I appreciate that you considered available pokemon and expected levels when challenging gym leaders. Personally, I would say Byron is easiest: - Terrible weakness to two starters, and generally weak to all three - Huge selection of pokemon available to fight him - Lots of places around to grind experience. - Stale moveset Roark, while much lower in level, has a scary strong Cranidos that outspeeds most pokemon available at the time and absolutely is stronger than everything. While his Onix and Geodude are nonthreats if you chose Piplup or Turtwig, Cranidos is scary no matter what pokemon you have. I disagree with your final verdict, as I think Sinnoh has one of the harder gym challenges. Certainly harder than Gen 1 and 2, harder than 5 and 6 in my opinion. Gen 3 is clearly harder, and though it has no gyms, I consider Gen 7's trials harder. I think Gen 8 is about even in terms of difficulty overall, but while there are some much harder gyms, there are also several that are even easier.

But I would definitely swap Fantina with Maylene, only because I've never actually had that many issues dealing with Lucario, and handling 3 evolved pokemon of some sort from Fantina with a mix of good attacks and status moves was always so brutal, especially when it was quite rare to actually have a super effective move you could use at that stage, just hitting them with whatever. Also, I'd swap Wake & Byron for the same reasons above regarding the evolved pokemon, Floatzel can be a threat whereas Bastiodons type combo offers a lot of weaknesses.
You forgot that the teams change in Pokémon Platinum. Because in Platinum Volkner doesn't have Ambipom and Candice doesn't have Medicham. The title should be in the Diamond and Pearl games not in Sinnoh.
The first game I had was Platinum and I really struggled with Roark. I had both a Monferno and Budew and I lost 3 times. It kept outspeeding me with Headbutt and either flinching me or if I do outspeed it would get a critical hit. Yet I have 0 luck so that’s probably just me 😂

My recent platinum playthrough made it clear: Gardenia is the toughest gym leader at that point in the game with her pokemon knowing magical leaf power 60 special never miss attack destroyed me even when hitting me not very effective. Also you have to defeat her for gaining access to important beneficial things such as vs seeker and the bicycle.
I wouldn’t say the fighting gym is anywhere near as difficult as the ghost gym, especially if you are also considering platinum. A level 26 missmagius can take down your starter Pokemon in 2 hits and it tanks damage really well at that level, as well as the gym leaders use of a hyper potion.
This is a very accurate video but I think Fantina is harder than Maylee just by a small margin. Because Fantina's gengar and mismagius has confuse ray and her drifblim has minimize and ominous wind.
Fantina from diamond and pearl still gives me PTSD. Even if I went in with something strong against her mismagius she would always move first and confuse me. I've never had an easy fight against her.
@Jacob Perry I honestly found her way too easy in platinum using Luxio with bite at level 25. I found Wake in Platinum much harder as I ditched my Luxio to get a gible I missed in my team, had Roserade only, and his Ice Fang did too much damage, and he is decently overleveled pokemon at the time for me. Mt only choice was giving using my gabite at like level 40-45 with Earthquake to finall kill it. Maylene's lucario was decently hard but the problem is that I found that having Staraptor with Close Combat and overleveling, even though I didn't fot her.
Good luck with her I played it for the first time last month and lost to her four times (My team was infernape roserade staraptor luxray gastrodon and glaceon
That Cranidos can be hell if you aren’t ready for it. And I’d switch Candice and Byron. I hatched Riolu and had no issues with him, Candice on the other hand was trickier
I almost exclusively play with the Nuzlocke rule set so a lot of the difficulty comes based on how my RNG is going. Also Candice in Platinum becomes MUCH more challenging with her Froslass, that thing is a nuzlocke killer.
For Maylene: Use the move growth twice with Roselia. KO Machoke + Meditite with giga drain. Pull out Staravia with intimidate on Lucario. Finish with Monferno.
Sinnoh seems to be pretty balanced and does well when it came to order of the gym leaders in terms of your rankings Roark is #1 - 1st easiest Gardenia #2 - 2nd easiest Wake is #4 - 4th easiest Byron is #6 - 5th easiest Volkner is #8 - 6th easiest (3rd hardest) Fantina is #5 - 7th easiest (2nd hardest) The only outliers are Maylene & Candice otherwise the gym leaders either matched up with their rankings (Roark, Gardenia & Wake) or were slightly off of their rankings
For Fantina, I actually used a Girafarig in my Pearl Nuzlocke against her because that's what my team had at that point. The Normal/Psychic typing means that none of her Ghost-type attacks hit, it resists Mismagius' Psybeam and Gengar's Poison Jab, and Girafarig learns Assurance, so you can hit them back super effectively.
Mystic Umbreon: Lucario is the hardest gym ace pokemon to take down in Sinnoh. My torterra: *takes off his headphones after hearing lucario's faint cry from one earthquake* You said something?
I swept through Fantina's team with a luxray with crunch and beat Malene with a infinape that out sped her whole team. Personally I think Fantina is the hardest gym leader in sinnoh
I would have to say from easiest to hardest the order is Gardenia, Roark, Candice, Maylene, Byron, Crasher Wake, Volkner, & Fantina Your Starter, Machop from Route 207, Budew (which isn't worth using because of how weak it is), & Psyduck (in Platinum) are the only supereffective options against Roark, although Geodude with Rock Smash is also a solid option. Beware of Stealth Rock & don't underestimate Roark. You need to beat Roark before you can get Psyduck from Oreburgh Gate in Diamond & Pearl because of the rocks you need to smash to get to the downstairs area. Gardenia you have access to Ponyta, Staravia, Zubat (Wing Attack at level 17), & Kricketune (continuously using Fury Cutter) for Supereffective options & it's even easier if you started with Chimchar. Diamond players also have it easier thanks to Murkrow in Eterna Forest. It's easier than Roark as long as you remember type effectiveness. Maylene you could sweep her with a freshly evolved Staraptor (Level 34), although she's not the hardest Sinnoh Gym Leader to beat. You could have a Haunter or Bronzor/Bronzong with both having Levitate alternatively. Her toughest Pokemon seems to be that Machoke thanks to its Foresight & Rock Tomb. Luxray (Level 30) is a great choice for taking down Machoke if you can paralyze it with Spark. Against Crasher Wake, Pokemon that are good to use include Luxray (except for Quagsire), Roselia (if you don't have Torterra), Staraptor (great against Quagsire) & whatever you have that's at least level 30 (Level 36 for Platinum) & not weak to water, dark, or ice. Beware of Quagsire having Yawn in Platinum. Maybe later I'll explain the last 4 Gym Leaders.

your not including the platinum teams in this? The gl's are a lot tougher in platinum, heck Candice's Froslass can get really dangerous about a month ago I watched someone who was nuzlocking the game, almost lose to her because of that thing alone and he had a magmar and scizor for crying out loud.
I'm kinda surprised to see Rorak ranked first. I mean I'm not saying he should be too much higher but I remember his cranidos hits like a truck with that headbutt, and while onix isn't a threat by itself it can usually set up a stealth rock before it goes down. I guess I would have at least ranked him above Gardenia
Could you do the best late game Pokemon from each game. You know, the kind of Pokemon we really want to have on our team but can't because they appear just too late in the game to use. Its really annoy that there's just some Pokemon that I really want to have of my team but I can't reach them until before or after the final gym battle.
My Pearl team was Torterra, Drapion, Blissey, Garchomp, Gastrodon and Honchkrow. Those guys are all currently chilling out in the PokePelago enjoying Alola before being sent to Pokemon home to spend eternity 😂
I remember being so confused as to why my Staravia's wing attack wasnt super effective on that Lucario😂 took me so long to figure out ! That was one of the great things back then, everything wasn't spoiled/leaked/announced before the games were released, so I actually had to figure stuff out myself

One word for Candice - Lucario. You don’t need Infernape to sweep her. Also saying the ‘the most common fire type choice is Ponyta’ is an understatement, it was the ONLY fire type choice
Skuntank can also sweep her s well.
Actually no many realise this but Skuntank learns Flamethrower as soon as it evolves from Stunky.
I appreciate that you considered available pokemon and expected levels when challenging gym leaders. Personally, I would say Byron is easiest:
- Terrible weakness to two starters, and generally weak to all three
- Huge selection of pokemon available to fight him
- Lots of places around to grind experience.
- Stale moveset
Roark, while much lower in level, has a scary strong Cranidos that outspeeds most pokemon available at the time and absolutely is stronger than everything. While his Onix and Geodude are nonthreats if you chose Piplup or Turtwig, Cranidos is scary no matter what pokemon you have.
I disagree with your final verdict, as I think Sinnoh has one of the harder gym challenges. Certainly harder than Gen 1 and 2, harder than 5 and 6 in my opinion. Gen 3 is clearly harder, and though it has no gyms, I consider Gen 7's trials harder. I think Gen 8 is about even in terms of difficulty overall, but while there are some much harder gyms, there are also several that are even easier.
All the points that you stated throughout the video on the Sinnoh gym leaders is a absolutely spot on.
I always thought fantina was tougher in diamond and pearl than platnum because of the lower levels.

Wake was pretty easy all you needed to do was have a grass and electric type that are at least his level and you will win easily.

But I would definitely swap Fantina with Maylene, only because I've never actually had that many issues dealing with Lucario, and handling 3 evolved pokemon of some sort from Fantina with a mix of good attacks and status moves was always so brutal, especially when it was quite rare to actually have a super effective move you could use at that stage, just hitting them with whatever.
Also, I'd swap Wake & Byron for the same reasons above regarding the evolved pokemon, Floatzel can be a threat whereas Bastiodons type combo offers a lot of weaknesses.

You forgot that the teams change in Pokémon Platinum. Because in Platinum Volkner doesn't have Ambipom and Candice doesn't have Medicham. The title should be in the Diamond and Pearl games not in Sinnoh.
The first game I had was Platinum and I really struggled with Roark. I had both a Monferno and Budew and I lost 3 times. It kept outspeeding me with Headbutt and either flinching me or if I do outspeed it would get a critical hit.
Yet I have 0 luck so that’s probably just me 😂

Honestly Maylene was one of the easiest imo, and I'm not even any good. Fantina and Candice were the most difficult for me
My recent platinum playthrough made it clear: Gardenia is the toughest gym leader at that point in the game with her pokemon knowing magical leaf power 60 special never miss attack destroyed me even when hitting me not very effective. Also you have to defeat her for gaining access to important beneficial things such as vs seeker and the bicycle.
I wouldn’t say the fighting gym is anywhere near as difficult as the ghost gym, especially if you are also considering platinum. A level 26 missmagius can take down your starter Pokemon in 2 hits and it tanks damage really well at that level, as well as the gym leaders use of a hyper potion.

On the topic of wrong typing, Yellow Giovanni has Persian (his type is Ground type).
This is a very accurate video but I think Fantina is harder than Maylee just by a small margin. Because Fantina's gengar and mismagius has confuse ray and her drifblim has minimize and ominous wind.
Pretty sure that Drifblim has Aftermath as well which comes as an unwelcome surprise once you take it down 😂

Agree, back in my days remember my friends and I had a really hard time dealing with Maylene even with Monferno and Staravia
Fantina from diamond and pearl still gives me PTSD. Even if I went in with something strong against her mismagius she would always move first and confuse me. I've never had an easy fight against her.
@Jacob Perry I honestly found her way too easy in platinum using Luxio with bite at level 25. I found Wake in Platinum much harder as I ditched my Luxio to get a gible I missed in my team, had Roserade only, and his Ice Fang did too much damage, and he is decently overleveled pokemon at the time for me. Mt only choice was giving using my gabite at like level 40-45 with Earthquake to finall kill it. Maylene's lucario was decently hard but the problem is that I found that having Staraptor with Close Combat and overleveling, even though I didn't fot her.

I always save before I battle gym leaders so I can soft reset if I lose... I had to soft reset five times and actually strategize for Fantina

That Cranidos can be hell if you aren’t ready for it. And I’d switch Candice and Byron. I hatched Riolu and had no issues with him, Candice on the other hand was trickier
It's been a while since i played gen 4, but is there not a Dark type you can catch for Fantina?
I almost exclusively play with the Nuzlocke rule set so a lot of the difficulty comes based on how my RNG is going. Also Candice in Platinum becomes MUCH more challenging with her Froslass, that thing is a nuzlocke killer.
For Maylene:
Use the move growth twice with Roselia. KO Machoke + Meditite with giga drain. Pull out Staravia with intimidate on Lucario. Finish with Monferno.

Sinnoh seems to be pretty balanced and does well when it came to order of the gym leaders in terms of your rankings
Roark is #1 - 1st easiest
Gardenia #2 - 2nd easiest
Wake is #4 - 4th easiest
Byron is #6 - 5th easiest
Volkner is #8 - 6th easiest (3rd hardest)
Fantina is #5 - 7th easiest (2nd hardest)
The only outliers are Maylene & Candice otherwise the gym leaders either matched up with their rankings (Roark, Gardenia & Wake) or were slightly off of their rankings
For Fantina, I actually used a Girafarig in my Pearl Nuzlocke against her because that's what my team had at that point. The Normal/Psychic typing means that none of her Ghost-type attacks hit, it resists Mismagius' Psybeam and Gengar's Poison Jab, and Girafarig learns Assurance, so you can hit them back super effectively.

I would have to say from easiest to hardest the order is Gardenia, Roark, Candice, Maylene, Byron, Crasher Wake, Volkner, & Fantina
Your Starter, Machop from Route 207, Budew (which isn't worth using because of how weak it is), & Psyduck (in Platinum) are the only supereffective options against Roark, although Geodude with Rock Smash is also a solid option. Beware of Stealth Rock & don't underestimate Roark. You need to beat Roark before you can get Psyduck from Oreburgh Gate in Diamond & Pearl because of the rocks you need to smash to get to the downstairs area.
Gardenia you have access to Ponyta, Staravia, Zubat (Wing Attack at level 17), & Kricketune (continuously using Fury Cutter) for Supereffective options & it's even easier if you started with Chimchar. Diamond players also have it easier thanks to Murkrow in Eterna Forest. It's easier than Roark as long as you remember type effectiveness.
Maylene you could sweep her with a freshly evolved Staraptor (Level 34), although she's not the hardest Sinnoh Gym Leader to beat. You could have a Haunter or Bronzor/Bronzong with both having Levitate alternatively. Her toughest Pokemon seems to be that Machoke thanks to its Foresight & Rock Tomb. Luxray (Level 30) is a great choice for taking down Machoke if you can paralyze it with Spark.
Against Crasher Wake, Pokemon that are good to use include Luxray (except for Quagsire), Roselia (if you don't have Torterra), Staraptor (great against Quagsire) & whatever you have that's at least level 30 (Level 36 for Platinum) & not weak to water, dark, or ice. Beware of Quagsire having Yawn in Platinum.

5.)Roark (i know he is first but his Cranidos was pure pain)

I'm kinda surprised to see Rorak ranked first. I mean I'm not saying he should be too much higher but I remember his cranidos hits like a truck with that headbutt, and while onix isn't a threat by itself it can usually set up a stealth rock before it goes down. I guess I would have at least ranked him above Gardenia

Could you do the best late game Pokemon from each game. You know, the kind of Pokemon we really want to have on our team but can't because they appear just too late in the game to use. Its really annoy that there's just some Pokemon that I really want to have of my team but I can't reach them until before or after the final gym battle.
I've had more problem with Roark (with an overleveled Piplup) and Fantina than with Maylene. Staraptor owns her.

That was one of the great things back then, everything wasn't spoiled/leaked/announced before the games were released, so I actually had to figure stuff out myself

If you can keep Bite on the Grass starter until you reach Gym 5 in Diamond & Pearl or Gym 3 in Platinum, it may help with the ghost types of the gym.(Just watch out for Aftermath on Drifblim & Poison Jab on Gengar.)
