@@robmotiveplus I did notice yesterday the engine did shut off at a light? How is that possible? I restarted by turning off the start stop button, assuming give it gas would have worked as well., but I thought this deactivated the auto start/stop.
The check engine light drops off after 2nd or 3rd engine start. I did this to my JT literally a couple days ago. Bypassing the AUX battery did the trick for me...
How big is the battery supposed to be to run without the auxiliary battery, i just got an H6 760cca, the dealer that sold me the jeep put a 24F non AGM battery with only 550cc
Just wanted say “thanks” for your simple and straightforward fix for ESS. Did this today, in my 2020 Rubicon. Hardest part was getting the 13 mm nut loose! Also, there is a spare fuse storage slot in the top left of the fuse box, so stuck my 10 amp fuse there. Cranked up the Jeep, no lights and all seems well.
Yes, trying this on my Wrangler as well. And that 13mm nut is snug to say the least. Did you just have to use brute force or try something else to get it loose? Guess I need to eat a can of spinach for the instant Popeye muscles to loosen it.
Update...it does NOT drain my battery. So this worked and has for the past 3 days. No more stupid service start stop system and the Avengers A light on my dash. Appreciate the tutorial.
I'll just share my recent experience and let you decide for yourself. So 3 months ago I started my 2021 Gladiator with 38k miles on it, and got the message that the start stop was no longer working. Quick research told me it was probably the aux battery going/gone bad and that it would need to be changed soon or car would not be drivable. I pushed my luck and managed to get 3 more months out of it. I don't drive much or far and I don't use start/stop I really didn't care. Then one day the car wouldn't start. In fact when I hit the button all sorts of strange things began to happen. The wipers moved, there was a whine under in the engine bay and rapid clicks. The dash lights were on and dome but it would not start nor would it turn off it was locked in some electronic spasm. I disconnected the main positive and negative and still it wouldn't "die". Finally after researching I disconnected the aux body side negative that is attached near the main battery on the passenger inner fender/engine wall near the top. Finally the vehicle died. I reconnected aux first then main and the car did nothing. I ran jumper cables from another car to main and managed to start the vehicle which now had no start stop message. I bought an aftermarket aux battery had it installed at local shop and things were fine. No more message ever came back, car started like normal and drove normal. About a month later I started to notice odd things. The volts would stay at 14.1-5 but my headlights had a flicker to them. Occasionally the voltage would drop to 12.1-5 volts. Then the car started to be sluggish to start and I figured the main battery was dying as well. Made sense with car being 4 years old from what I've read that's the time the main would be going. Still it seemed fine and I put a jump box in the truck just in case. Then one day while across town when I went to start it again it just clicked. Used jump box and it fired right up as I took off the jump box there was a message on screen said to stop safely as vehicle would shut down soon. Volts read under 12. The steering was bad as the electric assist would cut out as I was turning the wheel. I managed to drive 3 blocks to a friend's place where the engine began to sputter and die as every light on the dash lit up. Towed to dealership, both batteries were bad, even the new one, and a fusible link was bad. Repairs made no other issues found 1528.54 dollars later. TL;DR If your aux battery is going out replace it or do the bypass asap. Don't wait. I remember old cars you could drive with a bad battery running off the alternator but these modern cars become a brick and can strand you anywhere.
Great video. I also got stuck with “interesting” results on the dash. The Stop Start service warning was still popping up. Found out that disconnecting the main battery’s negative entirely was needed for 10 minutes in order to do an electrical reset.
If you do this the ESS will continue to operate off of the main battery which means you need to hit the ESS off button each time you drive. It also disables the remote start feature.
Had this issue over the summer while playing in Colorado on top of a pass. I had installed a Auto Start/Stop Eliminator in the spring hoping that it would keep the aux battery from dying quickly, while i like the Eliminator because it remembers the last setting, the battery shots craps at the most in opportune time. Made it down the mountain, pulled the negative cable off the main battery to clear codes, then disconnected the Aux battery, pulled fuse 42, hooked up the main negative cable, restarted the jeep and no problems. Made it back home, pulled the aux battery by going through the passenger side wheel well instead of pulling the full fuse block, taped off both cables for the aux battery and dumped the battery. Still running off the smaller main battery, no issues, I will go with the lager battery when this battery shoots craps. I can't believe people spend the money on replacing that dang thing.
Had similar issues with the ESS. We used the option of removing the battery and bypassing the battery with a jumper on the fuse block. It has worked well on a JLU and a JT for over two years.
@@mblake0420 Yes, it allows you to bypass the second auxiliary battery. I used a 10 ga jumper on the N1 and N2 posts in the fuse box. Disconnected the aux leads from the main battery and removed the aux battery. No issues for over two years in a JL and JT.
I have been wanting to do this on my 2021 JL with the 3.0 liter ecodiesel. I have already had to replace the auxiliary battery twice. Luckily, it was done under warranty. This is a common procedure for eliminating ESS in the Gladiator forum/groups. I’ll be having my dealer replace my batteries for free if they fail while my ‘22 Gladiator is under warranty, but as soon as the warranty is up, I’ll definitely be doing this to mine (if I keep it that long). That aux. battery location is the dumbest afterthought I’ve ever seen on any vehicle! I get that under hood space is lacking, but why not put it behind the glove box under the dash or under the back seat?!? Literally ANYWHERE other than where they put it would be better!!!
I have a 2021 Wrangler EcoDiesel. The diesel engine has the Aux battery under the Main battery. It is super easy to change the Aux battery while changing the main battery which I did at 3 years (which is a long time for a battery in Arizona). That way I don't have a battery issue in the desert. I don't like the Auto Start Stop system. I hit the button every time I go somewhere. I did hear the JL Tazer system has a setting where the Jeep remembers the last setting. You can push it and forget it. I haven't done that yet. Your way seems much easier. Thanks
I’m on my fifth aux battery and sec on new new set of sensors. Just did the delete. My Jeep stealership was zero help once the warranty expired. The fifth one was installed last day of warranty and failed in a week.
Thank you big government for forcing these bs envoronmental "savings" on us that may save a fraction of a percent of fuel. In the mean time, it causes the general public to spend on replacing useless batteries at a larger cost the to environment and my wallet. Oh and also wearing down other components in your car like the starter.
What you just did seems to be a popular method to deal with the auxiliary battery. Did you find that the start/stop system still works but now uses the main battery? I don't like the start/stop so I always push the button to disable the feature. When my auxiliary battery starts to act up I will be doing the fuse pull and negative cable disconnect and tape off.
@robmotivejl Not true on my 2021 JL. I removed the fuse (42) and completely eliminated the aux battery and I still have to push the button to disable my ESS.
Not sure what other steps were missed. Fuse pull and neg batt terminal disconnect. I also have the 2021 jl that’s why I’m curious before I do this mod.
From what I understand you can still be left stranded when the aux battery dies even if you pull fuse 42. All that does is disable the start stop. The true fix is deleting the aux battery and hooking up its connection to the main battery.
I have a 2021 wrangler and also having issues. Aux switches not working while battery charging. I thought aux battery. Mine has a 3.6 with e-torque. Turns out no aux battery under fuse panel. different system. Just a heads up for people w/e-torque. Just bad main battery.
Question- If u remove the aux battery positive cable from the aux battery and attach the aux Battery positive cable to the main battery positive post. Would this bypass the aux battery and fool the ESS into thinking it is attached to the aux battery? I would think everything would work like the factory and no check engine light or messages. (Other than no aux battery in the loop).
Ok i am on my 2nd start battery replacement. I have a 2018 rubicon jl. I am going to try this. But ? You keep saying auto stop. Can I assume you also mean start? Did you leave in the start battery. I assume yes. Why didn’t you also remove the positive lead??
Did the Aux Battery by-pass and removed F42, almost every thing works now as it should. Only issue is the Air Bag red symbol won't shut off. Tried disconnecting Main Battery for 30 minutes, no help. So what to do next.
I removed the fuse and disconnected the ground but all my lights came back on also it disabled my remote start so obviously the remote start runs off that small auto start-stop battery on a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon. And when the check engine light comes on in the auto start-stop light comes on it runs like crap starts running real rough
I tried this exact thing on my 21 Gladiator Mojave, and it acts like the battery isn't even connected, no gauge lights, won't start. I tried tightening things, tried a few times, no luck. Seems like the aux battery is dead and it killed my main. I've replaced the main, I guess I'll just swap out the aux next.
Bypassing BUT leaving the AUX battery in place. Any concerns of AUX battery deteriorating over time and leaking sulfuric acid over the Jeep frame and components?
Great trouble shooting. I will use your method to disable the system when the Auxiliary battery start causing me problems. I think that if the aux battery is in good shape, it is a good source to start the vehicle if the main battery is bad. The reverse will not be true. The entire system is just cumbersome. They should have installed the aux battery in an accessible place. Symply poorly laid out system.
Thanks for the video. I have been looking for information on a problem I'm having and I wonder if this could help. It happened a couple of times. I get in the gladiator and all the lights come on, including the Jeep logo across the u-connect. I press on the brake to start it, push the start button, and all the dash lights go out. Nothing. I checked the battery terminals and fuses. Didn't really expect anything since its a 2023 with only 3600 miles. Anyway, I went back in and all the lights were on. Stepped on the brake, pushed the start button and it started right up. Its happened 3 times now. Could it be a bad battery cell? Any input would be helpful. Thanks
Haha I did this. Found fuse 42, disconnected the cable. No lights on dash. Went for ride and first time at a light auto start/stop still working and jeep shut off. I pressed button and went about my day. 😖 In recap. I’d did not work on my JL.
I did mine yesterday After 2 days testing , 2 times in stop signal jeep seems to stop the engine, after that i need to press the aux battery switch off on dash
this doesn't completely disable the ESS system. It is supposed to prevent the bad aux battery draining off the main battery. You still have to press the button on the dash to disable the system.
I've talked to a couple aftermarket shops and they really know what they're doing this guy is good a mechanic he said your alternator will not charge your battery when you do this if it's on there for the factory it's made to work like this now the Jeeps that don't have it for the factory it's a different kind of motor if you have this exhilar battery you are supposed to run it it is going to cause problems that's why I haven't done it everyone told me it will cause problems it's made to have it for a reason it's not just to start stop it runs other things it lets the alternator charge the battery
The amount of amperage the alternator puts back to the battery is low because it's running all the other electronics which is its job starting is your battery/starters job. If you leave the lights on or drain your battery anyway shape or form you will have to put it on an actual charger the alternator will not ever recoupe what was lost and thats a good way to blow out an alternator and starter they all work together and when one goes its hard on the others also for those newer vehicles you have to have an AGM charger to match the batteries make up or else you will wreck your battery on the old style chargers (dont throw them away they are still great for other standard batteries better then the new chargers)
I've been doing a bit of research and just FYI for June 2021+ JT/JL it's actually the other black wire... Which is really weird coz like.. how am I gonna connect the black wire you took off without that metal plate on there? lol.. I guess I'll find out tomorrow :)
I just replaced both batteries. I read the aux battery is for the SS system in addition to "other systems". Not sure what they are referring to. Still have a SS warning light. No codes stored. Such a PITA...
So I did this and it didn't work for me. Whenever that wire that you unplugged is not attached to the other black wire I get no power whatever. Although weirdly there's a telephone button that looks like it was installed aftermarket which blinks a blue LED. it's the only thing that works.
@@robmotiveplus Turns out it was my main battery that was dead. I have a new one coming this weekend. I dunno if I talked about my jump charger in previous comments but it was broken. I got this new NEXPOW charger. it's nuts. I jumped the Gladiator 6 times and it wasn't even down to 75%. Crazy powerful charger.
I did this and it seemed to work, no check engine light, but I still have the auto start repair warning.. even though the fuse is gone and ground removed.. ideas?
Hello, Thank you for the video. Very useful. The engine light is ON since I bypassed the aux battery. Could you please run me through the steps to make it go away one more time? That would be superuseful. Thank you. Best, G
Hey rob I’m having the same problem with my gladiator dealer changed my small battery ok it was fixed only for a few days then it came back on then took it back to the dealer and now they charged me $75.00 just to turn off that light on the dash if you or someone knows how to turn off the light please let me know batteries are new thank you

Anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it? Im hoping it comes back in a couple days maybe it downloads or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Same thing happened to me on my 21. Put every thing back to the way it was.Took a drive then did the bypass again and everything worked fine. Maybe the computer was adjusting to the changes? All I have is a red flash on dash when I start it then it goes away. Back up camera works fine.
So I did this on my 2020 JT, no light, disconnected the negative (the correct one) and pulled the ESS fuse. Drove for about 10 minutes and worked, many stops and engine kept running. The next day, somehow the Gladiator is stopping again at a full stop. I have to push the disable button for this to work. So somehow the jeep is now using the main battery for Auto stop/start. I am miffed...help anyone
Don’t do this if you’re just trying to eliminate Auto Stop Start. I wasted 30 minutes of my life trying this just for that purpose. Doesn’t work for that.
@@robmotiveplus I did it verbatim. Removed the F42 fuse (ESS) and removed the smaller battery negative battery terminal. It’s obvious which negative wire because it’s the smaller diameter. I have a 2023 so it’s possible they’ve changed things electronically somehow.

I don't like the start/stop so I always push the button to disable the feature. When my auxiliary battery starts to act up I will be doing the fuse pull and negative cable disconnect and tape off.
Nope. The fuse defeats the system.
@robmotivejl Not true on my 2021 JL. I removed the fuse (42) and completely eliminated the aux battery and I still have to push the button to disable my ESS.
@TIPH966 probably because you left out a step. Gotta watch the whole video.
The true fix is deleting the aux battery and hooking up its connection to the main battery.
eTourque is the way to go. Sure you have the ESS but no stupid "aux" battery.. ( The mild hybrid ysytem has a 48v battery the handles the ESS)
Hiya, What year Jeep JL is this? I have a 2024 wondering if it’s the same, your video is the newest post on this.
It’s a 2018.
I have a 2021 wrangler and also having issues. Aux switches not working while battery charging. I thought aux battery. Mine has a 3.6 with e-torque. Turns out no aux battery under fuse panel. different system. Just a heads up for people w/e-torque. Just bad main battery.
This is why you don't buy those systems
Interesting. I watched a different video that disconnected the other negative cable with the bolt.
They could have. They’d be ground thru the aux battery but still running thru the aux battery.
Sir what’s good to have for car batteries to keep them maintained is the Noco Genius5. Worth every penny….
Typically yes…however, this system seems immune to common sense!
I would think so, but you should consult an electrician 👍
Good to know I hate the start and stop, I always need to turn it off manually… the day the secondary battery will die, I’ll try with my grand Cherokee
Your assumptions are correct.
When you bypass the Aux battery by removing the 42 Fuse and neg cable can you then use an H7 battery vs H6 which supports the start/stop system?
I am not familiar with either.
@ isn’t that what you did in this video? Or does that Jeep not have the auto stop start? Thx
H7, H6 battery?
Please keep us updated. If you don't experience any problem I will try this with my JT. Appreciate the video.
No issues as of today👍
@@robmotiveplus Does the Remote Start still work ?
That Jeep doesn’t have it.
Did the Aux Battery by-pass and removed F42, almost every thing works now as it should. Only issue is the Air Bag red symbol won't shut off. Tried disconnecting Main Battery for 30 minutes, no help. So what to do next.
I’d reconnect everything.
DOES NOT WORK WITH 2023 GLADIATOR RUBICON ECO DIESEL! Gas models might work?
Will that affect your jeeps original warranty and what about aftermarket warranty which I have .My rubicon is 21
Only if it directly causes the failure of an otherwise warranted part.
I have a 2020 jeep compass and there is no F42 fuse. Anybody know the fuse number for the compass?
Fuse legend is beneath the fuse box lid on every car. Open it & locate it.
That’s a bummer!
Did your engine get back to running smoothly after the battery delete?
@stevenslack3892 The battery didn’t have anything to do with that.
does this affect remote start? if it doesn't I'm going to do this tonight
Good question? I’d think not, but I’ve not tried it.
I had that issue, just commented about it. Did you have any issues on yours @qshrek ?
@@samvigil9835 not yet.
Good evening hope all is well what year is your Jeep
Thanks
What if you just remove 42?
great thanks for posting this, I hate these systems!
I have a new rubicon and changed the battery twice cause they died. I’m going to try this hopefully it works
I tried this exact thing on my 21 Gladiator Mojave, and it acts like the battery isn't even connected, no gauge lights, won't start. I tried tightening things, tried a few times, no luck. Seems like the aux battery is dead and it killed my main. I've replaced the main, I guess I'll just swap out the aux next.
.
Bypassing BUT leaving the AUX battery in place. Any concerns of AUX battery deteriorating over time and leaking sulfuric acid over the Jeep frame and components?
AGM BATTERY. Won’t be an issue .
Symply poorly laid out system.
the 2020 RHD 2 litre has the aux battery directly under the main battery, just lift the main out ,lift the plastic hatch and there you are
Thanks for the video.
Thanks
Could be many things. It’s under warranty; I’d take it in.
That seems to work, Or can replace the batteries. Yeah that is $300 but Christa appears to be going to drive the Jeep might be worth the investment.
Do you take the auxiliary battery out or un hook it? Or just leve it???
I left mine…but it probably should be removed.
Good video.. I feel your pain! Thanks you for this good idea
Still working with no issues.
a dealer mechanic told me it will put a drain on main battery any issues so fat ?
No issues with mine.
So this eliminates the auto stop and can this work on a 23 jeep gladiator?
Unfortunately no. It takes the aux battery out of the mix.
@robmotiveplus so how would I eliminate the start stop on a 23 jeep gladiator
@patrickthach8612 There is a device out there for that. Search auto stop eliminator.
So far so good.
I read the same thing. "Other things" are yet to be identified. I think audio is one of them although I haven't had any issues with that.
Very good explanation - thanks!
I've been doing a bit of research and just FYI for June 2021+ JT/JL it's actually the other black wire... Which is really weird coz like.. how am I gonna connect the black wire you took off without that metal plate on there? lol.. I guess I'll find out tomorrow :)
I tackled that in a video I believe.
My wife's jeep won't remote start anymore now that I've done this exact procedure. 2020 JL with the turboed 2.0L
I believe I have the same model of Jeep, other than the remote start have any Service engine Messages reappeared for you?
You hit the jackpot Rob with this discovery.
Definitely the easiest solution I’ve found👍
I just replaced both batteries. I read the aux battery is for the SS system in addition to "other systems". Not sure what they are referring to. Still have a SS warning light. No codes stored. Such a PITA...
That’s a bummer!
I changed main battery in my jl and got CEL. Disconnected ground again for 2 min reinstalled and cleared CEL ?
Good that it cleared.
Auto start will strip your ring gear on your flywheel. Very expensive fix..disabling will fix this problem.
So I did this and it didn't work for me. Whenever that wire that you unplugged is not attached to the other black wire I get no power whatever. Although weirdly there's a telephone button that looks like it was installed aftermarket which blinks a blue LED. it's the only thing that works.
That’s odd?
@@robmotiveplus Turns out it was my main battery that was dead. I have a new one coming this weekend. I dunno if I talked about my jump charger in previous comments but it was broken. I got this new NEXPOW charger. it's nuts. I jumped the Gladiator 6 times and it wasn't even down to 75%. Crazy powerful charger.
Sounds like a good unit.
I did this and it seemed to work, no check engine light, but I still have the auto start repair warning.. even though the fuse is gone and ground removed.. ideas?
I don't have anything displayed.
Hello,
Thank you for the video. Very useful.
The engine light is ON since I bypassed the aux battery. Could you please run me through the steps to make it go away one more time? That would be superuseful.
Thank you.
Best,
G
Just watch the video again👍
Didn't work on my 2020 jeep rubicon JLU
I did this 4 days ago on my 2019 JL. Removed the ground cable and the fuse. Still getting the error message on the dash
That’s odd.
Doe remot start still work ?
This Jeep doesn’t have remote start.
I just replaced the aux battery but the A light still on. Somebody know how to reset it? Help please Jeep Rubicon 2018
Hey rob I’m having the same problem with my gladiator dealer changed my small battery ok it was fixed only for a few days then it came back on then took it back to the dealer and now they charged me $75.00 just to turn off that light on the dash if you or someone knows how to turn off the light please let me know batteries are new thank you
I assume it takes a device of some sort to turn it off.
I’ve read that this can disable the REMOTE start feature. Anyone run into it?
Cheaper than buying a bypass device
Thx
Still waiting for the long term effects (1 year +) before I do this.
Excellent discovery. Will you be doing the same to your 2024 Wrangler? I'd be interested to know.
Once I start experiencing the issue I will for sure!
Jeep obviously has this problem with all its auxiliary batteries push starts. I hate it! I've spent about $2,300 for something that's still a problem. I will ask my mechanic about disconnecting this feature.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
I just did the bypass and now key fob is not seen so will not start, I put it all back and still no go HELP
Sounds like something else to me? Check the battery in your fob.
I just tried it again after a few min and it started?
@standingbear39 Weird? I’d still change the battery in your fob.
I tried this with my 2020 gladiator and it worked fine but now i lost my backup camera and my off-road pages. Also my infotainment center looks different. Anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it? Im hoping it comes back in a couple days maybe it downloads or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No issues with that here.
Is it possible the ground cable is contacting metal?
completely tapped off.@@robmotiveplus
Did you have dead battery issue before this too or were you just eliminating the auto start stop feature?
My 2020 gladiator is doing the same thing after I did my delete.
Followed the steps but my Auxiliary light is still on my dash board.
Do you have the Auxiliary switches?
Mine is still on the dash also. Did you ever figure it out?
I did exactly the same thing in my gladiator 2021 sport and it didnt work. The car would not start at all.
Try the other ground cable instead since there are 2, depending on your model it may differ
I can't stand my jeep anymore because of this problem
It is annoying!
I tried this and lost my climate control. May have to do a hard reset. It's still not working right after I put everything back.
I think it's odd you're only get 10mpg, mine gets 24 mpg avg
The check engine light will be back on soon.
Nope, it never was.
Thank you Thank you…..
Why do you have to pull the entire negative terminal off instead of just pulling the aux? About to do this and minds mechanically dumb lol
dealer change was $1000 not doing that again.
WOW!
Why Jeep still have this feature!!!!
Good question 🤔
5000 miles and problems. I hate this product. buyers remorse.
I think the problem is the angry grill .. 😂😂
Not for the owner…my wife.
Don’t do this if you’re just trying to eliminate Auto Stop Start. I wasted 30 minutes of my life trying this just for that purpose. Doesn’t work for that.
I can’t speak for what you did, but for mine it’s been off ever since I did it with no issues.
@@robmotiveplus I did it verbatim. Removed the F42 fuse (ESS) and removed the smaller battery negative battery terminal. It’s obvious which negative wire because it’s the smaller diameter. I have a 2023 so it’s possible they’ve changed things electronically somehow.
@@ScottH1130 Ugh! I too have a 2023 and was cautious thinking about "what if I do this and it doesn't work"?!?! You saved me the trouble! Thanks! If I start having troubles I will give it a try - but until then, Nope. ;)
I'm in the same boat with my 2023 Willys, fuse 42 out & underhood ESS switch disengaged but motor still shuts off at lights. I will remove my auxiliary battery when it will become a parasitic drain but it seems ESS is now fed from main battery
Thank you for informative video.
No answer yet if remote key still work??
If u do that u loose ur Etorque and have less fuel economy and take off power if ur etorque light is on change ur fuse array. Fuse easy fix!’
I do not have Etorque.
Next time loosen the big one first, then the battery terminal you do it both while it’s still on there
