    I can say 100% the only thing that worked on my gladiator was a touch of toe out! After checking and re checking everything, trying different toe in, adding and removing castor, tyre pressure, shock settings, different stabilise the toe out instantly made my Jeep drivable again, this video and some reading online really helped so thank you sir all the way from Australia

    Funny thing about this trick. It used to be common sense in the old days. My dad taught me years ago that the toe on every vehicle should go slightly outward. Never straight ahead. I set a straight toe on a Dodge I once owned and it shook the suspension like mad. Adding a slight outward toe cured it plain and simple. Shame on Jeep for setting bad specs. More proof that the company is the major cause of the Jeep problems. If I ever come through Vegas, I'll definitely ask you to do the front end for me. As I no longer work on cars. Thanks for posting. And btw, not too many people have the talent to explain something that any dummy can understand. You are a very good teacher.

    Great video. After 3 years, I have never experienced death wobble on my Gladiator with my AEV lift and 37" Cooper STT Pros. I also have added other top notch components like Steersmarts Yeti XD tie rod and draglink assemblies and adjustable trackbar. I check that everything is tight and bushings and ball joints are not worn out every 2-3 months, and before I go on any overland trip no matter how short or long the trip will be. A good idea is to mark bolts with a paint pen to see if anything has loosened up over time.

    I've been four wheeling since 1982. Have built, two from the ground up, quite a few rigs over the years (Jeeps and pickups but ignore the make since all the running gear was a mix). I've had good luck solving death wobble but not perfect. This is the best solid technical informatoin I've seen on death wobble, an excellent video. One timy thing overlooked: The steering stabilitzer(s) (sometimes you need two) must be in top condition. Nonetheless an excellent video. (fwiw I've published 14 articles in the four wheeling mags in the day and Moses Ludel published a couple of articles on my builds)..

    Hardly anyone here in Germany drives a lifted Jeep JK with 4 inch lift and 35s.
    I also have Death Wobble from time to time but only if I drive over a bump and relieve the suspension. I always thought in wheel alignment that toe-in would be better, so I've always set more toe-in.
    On cars with independent suspension, a little toe-in stabilizes straight-line stability.
    I'll have to try this right away. Death Wobble on the Autobahn is not funny 😅

    WOW thanks for that video. I have a 2015 JKU with 80,000 miles on it. I have owned it since 2017 and never had a DW or any real issues with steering in that time (brakes are another story). Due to its age\milage, I took it to a 4x4 shop for a good front-end inspection to keep it happy for another 80,000. They recommended replacing the drag link since it was showing its age and JUST out of spec. Ball joints in spec, tie-rod\ends in spec (but showing age), no movement in trackbar or control arms. It is pretty much stock except for a front bumper. I had the rake corrected for a heavy front bumper with a 1" Teraflex spacer and new shocks all around, had the drag link replaced and the tierod (and both ends). I finished with an alignment.
    Driving at low speeds was wonderful. It felt like a new Jeep. Highway driving, I got my first DW ever. I thought I was a dead man. I had to stop to correct it. Did it again on another highway (both times on a corner turning left and hitting an expansion joint in the highway. I had no idea what the issue could be. The printout showed .10 Toe, both left and right. Stock control arms so no caster to adjust but green. Now I at least have a plausible explanation. Thank You

Had to replace my tie rod and drag link. Went with the CavFab standard steering that deleted my sway bars and steering stabilizer. At 40mph, the death wobble is terrible and makes it only driveable off road. We checked my tow angle with a measuring tape. There is 3/4 inch difference from the front of the brake rotors to the rear of the rotors. I’m hoping this info will help. I do have a question...I noticed that when I come to a stop from time to time (on the highway) when I reach around 50 to 55 mph while braking I get a small amount of Death Wobble, what could be the problem? • @donaldhester6555
    @donaldhester6555 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It has been 50 years since I took auto mechanics, but for the tow-in, I remember the spec from the manufacturer as being for both wheels combined. So, if tow-in is 1 degree, that is .5 degree per wheel with the steering wheel centered. That totals out to 1 degree. Tow-in is also determined with the mechanic reading the setting on the machine while pushing both front wheels at the front away from each other to account for the force applied by the tire friction as your car moves forward on the highway. If there is no slop in the tied rod joints, you will not see any.

  • @Pompomgrenade
    @Pompomgrenade ปีที่แล้ว

    Funny that you did not mention the steering dampener... Which is exactly where my Jeep dealer went to first, when my Jeep returned to the dealer with the death wobble at less than 5000 mi. The warrantied change of the steering dampener took away the death wobble.... I had already done a fastener check on all steering components and found them tight.

    When checking the track bar angle, does it matter if the wheels are hanging (as shown in the video) or with tires resting on ground or lift rails?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It matters more when the weight of the vehicle is on the wheels. However, by rights, they should be parallel either way. With the taller lifts, like the 4" and higher, while hanging the axle will shift harder... so focus more on flat ground. Example, while on the alignment rack itself

    Thank you for not mentioning the steering stabilizer. My cousin just had their brand new gladiator in the shop for death wobble and the dealership told them it was the stabilizer. I was like, if they replaced it, that's fine, but it wasn't the cause of death wobble. I just replaced everything on my tj, ball joints, tie rod, drag link, pitman arm, and steering gear box. Had to of course take it in for an alignment, but she's tracking smooth and straight again. Fortunately, i never had the death wobble, but it was wandering all over the road!

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When the suspension is tight, working correctly and in full alignment, you should never need the stabilizer itself. That is there only to keep the turning abilities smooth, not to fix a problem or prevent a problem. Only once, in 23 years, did I see a stabilizer be the problem... but it was not because it was weak or blown, but because it locked up and froze.... hence why I did not mention that as a culprit for this issue. Glad your TJ is tracking smooth!

I just bought a 2004 Wrangler with 106k miles, and about a 2" lift. The 2nd time I drove it I experience a major Death Wobble at 50+ miles an hour. I couldn't hold the steering wheel stable as I was slowly applying brake. It wobbled until about 10mph. I can't imagine going 75 and getting a DW. This video was very helpful in explaining the issues. Thank you for making this video. Of course I subscribed!

    If my shocks and springs are worn out could this cause the wobble? On the occasion I hit a hard pothole it will wobble do you think that could be the cause new to my 97 Grand Cherokee...one more question ? Do you think it's worth to buy the Rough Country 4 in lift with the new shocks and springs and stuff... thanks buddy love the video by the way taught me a lot keep them coming....NEW TO MY 97 GC...

      Your shocks and springs would have to be beyond worn out to be the cause of the DW, but worn out shocks cause worn out bushings, and those can cause the DW. The RCX kit for the grand Cherokee is a decent set up. I ran it on my 96 XJ years ago, and was happy with it. Personally I am not a fan of their shocks though. For the GC, I recommend Bilsteins... much better ride and last longer. JMO. Congrats on the jeep, and welcome to the family. If you ever need any advice, let me know. My email is in most of the video descriptions.

    Would these steps still work to eliminate the issue?

    I have a 2004 WJ with about 3" of lift and 32" tires. I've replaced literally everything in the front end and it still has the death wobble. I've tried setting toe like you showed and even on the inside edge of tolerance with no change. The only weak spot I think I might have is I used Moog stock replacement upper control arms. Even though everything feels tight I get a rattle over bumps and if I hit a bump over 50 it shakes like hell. Is it possible that the stock style bushings in those upper arms just can't handle the lift and bigger tires?

    I have a question as to I am chasing a ghost it seems on my 2022 gladiator. In your video of “ the secret to the cure”. When you went to do “ the trick “ I noticed when you changed the first reading to the outermost limit that you done so by the drag link. Then you adjust the other side toe reading with the tie rod end ? Is there a reason for that ? And if so, after that if your steering wheel is not centered how would you adjust it ? Because ultimately in order to straighten the steering wheel back up would you not do so by the drag link ? Which would then change that first measurement reading you fixed ? Great video, just trying to figure this out on my vehicle. And so far...I’m chasing a ghost it seems. And mine started at only around 10,000 ish miles on the vehicle.

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay, two things. First, be sure you have the steel steering gear box and not the aluminum one. There is an open TSB from FCA on the JL and the JT for the gear box replacement. Second... to adjust the vehicle correctly on the alignment rack, the steering wheel is locked with a tool in the straight position. You adjust the drag link to set toe on the right front wheel, and the tie rod to set the toe for the left.... IF it is a factory setup. Once done, the steering wheel will still be straight. However, if it is not, if you adjust the drag link outside of the alignment plates, like on the pavement, the only part it will turn is the steering wheel as the tie rod itself holds the toe between the wheels. The reason I start with the drag link and not solely a tie rod adjustment is to ensure the steering wheel remains straight, there for using the right front wheel as the reference to adjust the left front wheel. 😉 if that makes sense.
      Send me an email at Yasmarproductions@gmail.com and I will sent you a clear picture of the final results that just about any shop will understand. 😉

  • @alexcat1

    Ok, I was told that you adjust the toe inward because when you drive down the road it'll push the toe outward.
    Also, and I found this out the hard way, issues with your brakes (clogged lines, pulling to one side when braking, etc) can cause the dreaded death wobble by putting stress on your steering components!
    Lastly, tire wear, balance, flat spots, etc... can affect those components.
    I love this channel btw... You break everything down better than most of the mechanic's channels!! Keep up the good work!!!

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you toe in you amplify it... especially on lifted jeeps... found over the years that slight outward works best.... and because it is still in specs, have never seen negative tire wear. Lol.
      Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the efforts are appreciated

  • @robertdoran7387

    I have done alignments on Mercedes Benz multi link suspension cars only. I remember excessive Negative Castor can cause wandering and even some vibration.
    2 Questions:
    On a rigid axle, will the Castor angle change when you put on a lift kit?
    And...
    Will that change in Castor angle contribute to a wobble?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The caster does change, and will certainly add to the shake... which is where the positive toe concept comes from when aligning a lifted to jeep, to force the proper up thrust during the cycling of the suspension during up travel... due to the live axle itself, camber and caster adjustments are null, unless much more funding is spent towards things like adjustable ball joints, adjustable control arms etc... therfore for most, the wobble is inevitable due to design. And this is why the positive toe, as a counter measure to assist in proper movement....
      You are correct in your conclusion.... 😀😃

    Hi! I’m assuming that the steering wheel was straight after all of that? Because if the steering wheel required straightening then you’ll have to mess with that drag link once again which may affect your previous settings?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the steering should be straight after an alignment is performed. However, if it's not, then the nice thing about a solid tie rod steering system is you can straighten the steering wheel on the ground without affecting the total toe. 😉 but like I mentioned, the wheel is usually straight after a proper alignment

    Thanks for your videos! I had a terrible death wobble. I just got most of the joints (upper lower ball, tie rods, sway bar links) replaced in my stock front end and had them toe it out at the edge of the specs. Wobble is gone but now my steering feels like it has to "catch up" when I turn and does not correct itself straight very well. Seems to wander easily. Do you think this is from the alignment? I might put the toe back in some if that is why my steering seems weird. Any help is appreciated!

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  ปีที่แล้ว

      Steering wheel return is based on the caster adjustment.... which there is no caster adjustment on the Jeeps. Requires a separate bolt kit... I would be interested to see the alignment specs actually. You said it's all stock?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most of the time, there is no adjustment for the caster.... if I had to guess, something up front is still not right, a mushing for joint may be wearing out. Check trac bar first, tie rods etc. With adjustable co trol arms, you can change caster, it may help. But certainly get critical on the other parts
