Our JL just hit 4 years old with 24K miles. Auto stop stop constantly says not ready, battery charging. Dealer says both batteries need to be replaced and are not covered under my 7 year extended warranty. Quoted $750 for both including labor. Uh no thanks, I’ll replace them myself.
Same thing was happening to my JT after 4.5 years and 45k miles. I replaced both batteries from the top side last weekend using Wayalife’s video. Was pretty easy and now my Gladiator is back to normal. 👍✌️
The batteries are wired in parallel so they will charge, except during starting and auto start. They are isolated at startup and at auto stop so the main battery provides the large cranking power, and the small one keep accessories running. So, if the small battery is internally shorted, say from sulfate (which will happen a lot faster if it not kept charged) , it will cause a short on the main battery as well during the period when they are in parallel - causes lots of odd problems. Battery tenders and regular driving of at least 30 minutes, are your dual battery's best friends.
I think my aux battery killed my main battery. My auto start in my 2020 gladiator hasn't been working for several months but who is going to complain about that. I went to get in the Jeep to go to a doctors appointment this morning and the key fob would not unlock the door. I had a completely dead battery that had not problems yesterday. To shorten the story, I pulled the main battery and it will not charge. Isolated the aux battery and it will not charge either. Not sure it is safe to get my truck to the dealer.
100% right.The batteries run in conjunction. Keeping stop/start off in the long term will cause the main battery to take most of the load weakening the aux. This is why the aux battery is first to go followed by the main. Just leave it on
I have a 2018 jeep wrangler rubicon 2.0l turbo two door.. my battery finally died on me after a little over 4 years so i replaced it and come to find out my jeep does not have the axiliary battery, but it does have the start and stop system... win win for me!
A service adviser from Jeep told me a few months back that they have an issue with their batteries not lasting very long or just dying without warning. He even said that he doesn't use Mopar battery in his own vehicles because of that.
That just decided me on not buying my battery from a jeep dealer as I was planning to do tomorrow. I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 Flex Fuel. I never even heard of an "auxiliary battery" and am not sure if I have one. Regardless, I think I'll stay away from Mopar batteries. I'll probably by a DELCO BATTERY ... As they've been around for as long as cars have.
I don't know maybe on the newer ones but I had a 2005 Ram 2500 with the cummins that has two batteries and the stock mopar batteries lasted over a decade. I replaced them in 2018 more out of concern of being stranded not because they actually failed.
Thanks for your youtube on this aux battery. Had my orginal aux battery replace 1 mth before 3 year warranty was up! The installed a new one which lasted about 15 mths and atgued that not covered cuz jeep no longer under warranty. Told them about battery warranty and got it repllace free Thanks
Just replaced both batteries, originals from 2017, and less than 45,000 mi. The H6 main battery was $180 with a 4 yr warranty, that little AUX14 battery, $119.99 with only a one year warranty??, well that just sucks doesn’t it? BTW, be mindful of many AUX14 batteries not having a vent hose hole, and the inability to transfer the factory mounting posts to them, the batteries under the passenger seat on the Jeep Grand Cherokee should be vented to the outside of the vehicle.
I was wondering the same thing. I being told that it has to be special battery under the seat. The one that leaks bad things less. But I still was advised by my trusted private mechanic to open windows to vent things.
My '15 KL trailhawk has ESS, but not a AUX battery. The battery drain with engine shut off is huge, and I've had to buy an over the top performance battery so that it wouldn't die. I bought the jeep used with an 8month old Mopar battery that already had a bad cell. My theory is that they system computers act like a voltage drop test, draining the battery. The computers stay on for 30mins after engine shut off, so if you drive short distances the battery never re charges, and loses it's charge over time. You can actually see the voltage draw down from 12.8V to 12.6, 12.4 before the jeep goes to sleep. The battery recovers a little, then drains further with the next computer turn on (open the door). My ESS only works when the battery is at a certain level- it craps out after 3 days of travel to and from work (2.5 miles). If I don't charge the battery, things are good for about 5 months before the charge gets too low, and the car glitches out. I charge it every 2 weeks or so, summer or winter.
There is ALWAYS some amount of battery draw on modern vehicles. The fact that it recognizes when the keyfob is near so that just touching the door handle unlocks the doors means at some level there is a system searching for the keyfob signal.
My JT batteries both went out today. Same thing the night before my remote started stopped working so I turned it on manually. The following day it was fully drained since I wasn’t even able to start it or jump it. Same took my batteries to the dealership and had them replaced for free under warranty.
Why isn't keep having a recall on this issue? I don't want to do this again! She without my warranty!! Everyone I know including the jeeo dealership is aware if this issue
If you have installed aftermarket parts hooked up to electrical, check to see if there is any draw when Jeep is shut off. This could cause the battery to drain. The big thing is that you can not jump start the JL like a normal car. You must put the ground jumper on the main battery and the red jumper on Post #1 under the breaker panel. This will get your jeep started. There are several videos on TH-cam on how to jump start a jeep JL.
Thanks for this video. I recently bought a used 2020 JL and noticed after I bought it, that it wasn’t using the stop/start when I was stopped. When I went to the stop/start gauge cluster, it keep saying “unavailable, battery is charging” so that told me there was some sort of battery issue. I’m outside of the warranty period but dang are batteries expensive. A non-mopar aux battery is between $120-$150 and a regular AGM battery is around $250. So to replace both, isn’t cheap. I just make sure when I get in, to turn off the s/s. I’m not sure if turning it off reduces any draw on the main battery. But at this point, it’s something that needs to be replaced sooner than later…
If you ever get sick of the auxiliary battery. You can pull fuse 42 and disconnect the ground wire for the aux battery and your system doesn't even know it's there anymore but you also don't have auto stop start that is what I plan to do because I just realized I hit 36 months last month and my battery died funny how it happens. been driving my 2018 grand cherokee without the auxiliary battery for 3 years, 70,000 miles now with no noticeable issues. I'm glad it shut off the start/stop. I'll have to replace my main battery now but it's now 6-7 years old so that's normal.
I have a 2020 JL. I check the battery voltage every morning after its sat overnight and it is 11.9. I've told them about it and they of course tell me that is fine. Of course it's not. A flooded battery or a gel battery below 12.2 shortens the battery life. On an RV tour last year my Jeep battery died three times while towing. Even a lithium brick wouldn't start it. Finally got it started and brought a new main battery on my dime. No time to find a Jeep dealer. Of course they wouldn't reimburse me. Discovered that the brick won't jump start a battery that is too far discharged. Bought another (Noco) that has a boost function.
The bigest issue with these are the poor design in the location. The could have at least designed it to go right under the main battery so the easy removal of the main battery would have allowed direct access. But NO...they have to put it under the control module with fuses and so on making it a PITA. Being an engineer myself I like to say....Great Job Guys....You again created Job Security for some folks. Thanks for the video fella.....Once this happens to mine I will upgrade to the Genesis System and remove that little battery forever.

@@rebellion310 I don't get it either. Just dumb engineering. I will say that you should definitely go through the wheel well if you replace the aux battery. Do not go from above. You're taking a big chance messing with that power distribution block.
Also, while I would recommend deleting the aux battery entirely, I have replaced them from the bottom without removing the inner fender liner, or wheel or doing anything with the main battery or fuse box. This was a 2018 JLU Sahara

This happened to me. I installed the Mopar aux switches and the same Mopar lights. After 3 months, needed to replace AUX battery, another 3 months needs a new AUX battery
It's called a core charge and it's meant to keep people from discarding them and they end up in the landfill instead of recycling them. It's not a dealer charge.
I have a 2019 JLR stick shift, so I don’t know if this only pertains to the stick shift but anytime I start stop light comes on it disables my cruise control. I wouldn’t mind so much if it was only the start stop that disabled but I like my cruise control.
The $20.00 fee is usually called a "core charge". The 36-month warranty is probably prorated, meaning the further into the 36 months the battery lasts, the less value it has. the replacement under warranty will cost you something. I have a 2017 Grand Cherokee Limited with over 100,000 miles. Both batteries are original (knock on wood).
my Genesis Dual Battery system solved this problem for me. You can delete that battery altogether. Mine died on a trail the last time. I had enough. Your right they know the battery is crap. But it's location is one of the reasons it fails so dam often. Be it floods, dirt/mud or engine heat because of that location it gonna keep failing. Thanks for this video. @emerrilljr what year and type of jeep did you install it in? I just bought a 2023 grand cherokee and it has an auxiliary battery under the driver's seat which will be a pain to get to.

This is crazy! I had no idea about a second battery, im about to have it checked this weekend, i was ignoring the auto stop error forever. And now my jeep is haviny relay issues.
Good info. Glad my 392 doesn’t have ESS. I was dreading replacing the aux battery on my 2019 JLR but traded it before it needed replacing. (Drove through 30inches of water at Drummond Island in that 2019… must have gotten lucky!!! 😳)
FYI, I just had this error for several months and it eventually took out the alternator and possibly the main battery. Ended up needing both main and aux batteries and a new alternator. So I would address the aux battery sooner than later if you have the auto/stop fail message.
My 2021 with 2600 miles already failed. Thank goodness my other Jeep is a 4xe; it has no start/stop or even a starter (BUT there was a recall about a random shut off while driving...oops).
My dealership tried to tell me my main and aux battery warranty was only good for 2 years even though its on label. I put up a fight and they replaced them but damn it was an effort.

I'm so confused by this f'n aux battery stuff! So here's my story. 2019 Wrangler JL all batteries were fine, everything working, life was good. Installed a Tazer and disabled the Start/Stop thru the Tazer. Had an appt for some warranty work. got scared and removed the Tazer and reset all to factory. The minute I took the Tazer out and did the reset, dash message "Auto Start/Stop Not Ready ~ Charging". Everything is working fine, no flickering, no starting issues, no Start/Start yayy life is good. I was just gonna let the Start/Stop battery rot in it's little box but after reading this thread should I rethink dealing with the Aux Battery. I was about to re-install my Tazer and forget about it all over again. I was wondering also if the disable thru the Tazer is what caused the aux battery to go out. Whoever came up with this auto start/stop should be jailed!
It also powers the aux switch group, not only stop/start. You can also get a beeffier battery if you get aux switch from dealer, although I,m not sure how much better it is.
I grew up in Franklin Lakes. Used to go to Irelands for wing night all the time. Just replaced both batteries with an Optima H6 Yellowtop (Main), and a Super Start (aux). Pain in the ass to replace the auxiliary, but problems solved.
It's easy to get to at the bottom if you take your tire off. Still in a sucky location. Also you can start it by putting the positive on the main, and the second bolt on the fuse box goes to the aux for jump start. The more you know I guess.
My 2021 JLU Rubicon with the stop/start system doesn't have the auxiliary battery. I've also got the new electric e-torque option. Now 2 years in my main battery is dead haha
My gladiator is a stick, when i would shift in 5th gear the autostart would screw up, no cruise control, no backup cam, and didnt show me which gear i was in. When i would shut it off everything was good again
The Jeep's probably still trying to use that secondary battery as a energy stabilizer and since it's discharge that's why your experienced using these weird things. It might even be trying to use it and so when it realizes that it's under it switches back which is why you would get the flick ring and the lights. But as far as voltage, I wouldn't be running with the small battery broken because it will destroy your alternator potentially because it will continuously try the charge a dead battery It seems like you were not moving when you enabled the lights and the little battery died was auto start. Stop one of the things that you disabled so that the vehicle would be running off the alternator as far as power and not off of that little battery? There's a lot of Jeep guys and they have a tremendous amount of extras on their vehicles that draw electricity and if the engine's not running and you're drawing from it like electric seats, you can do it one time and it will kill your battery dead permanently. You will forevermore have issues😅 anything that has continuous draw that's high like the lights but if they're LEDs they shouldn't have done that. Anyway, I'm just curious trying to get the issue fixed before I pick up the vehicle. 😅
Sounds crazy, why don't fca just use another regular 12v instead of this tiny one. And the etorque have a 430w battery, but that is really quite heavy.

Same thing for me. Have an 18 rubi and have been in and out of issues for 10 months now. Have both batteries replaced 5 months ago and just starting to have the problems again. I May jump out of owning a Jeep for a while until these problems are figured out
Most batteries for all vehicles now are 2 year batteries. If you get more than 2 years from a factory battery your lucky. Its a cost cutting measure by manufacturers. Buying an aftermarket battery you will get 3-5 years.
If you need a battery for any vechile Menards has ACdelco batteries. Cheaper than auto stores. Bought one for my Subaru there. Also have a 2021 wrangler JLU.
how to solve it a lot of people complain about an issue with battery because installation takes a hug of a job there's any way to disable that batter or relocated from a mystery location

My windows were stuck and rolled down! I was pulling a friends flat bed trailer. I was out of town! So while there is no good time to break down this was extra bad! My jeep is a 2020 it! My payment is super high! But all I've ever owned is a jeeo! I still have my 94 jeep wrangler! Which I love so much more then this jeeo. But needed the extra room and truck bed! I was wondering if you thought the water is what caused your battery problems? And do you have any advice on how to prolong these batteries or how to just time it so I can kill it in time for the warranty to cover it!
I installed the dual battery system from Genesis after the aux battery failed a little after a year. Not to mention it's a MESS just to get to the aux battery to replace it under the fuse box.
@@chriscartwright2811 Yes it does. The secondary battery underneath the primary is completely removed. The hot (+) side feed of the smaller battery will interface with the new battery kit... It took a little over 4 hours to install the Genesis kit assuming you have the tools on hand and don't have to stop and get something... Thanks for the comment...
I hate the dual batteries. Lessons I have learned about 2020 Grand Cherokee. 1. If you get weird lean running errors, check your batteries 1st, the engine module is very sensitive to weak batteries and can cause lean bank calculation errors. 2. Always replace both batteries at same time if having problems with 1. They are NOT electrically isolated and a weak battery will draw down a good battery and also mask the actual issues. 3. The replacement Walmart battery is cheapest around and certainly has been better than the OEM main battery. Thoroughly annoyed at Jeep for a poor job of implementing start/stop just to meet cafe standards.
At least yours gave you some warning. I was on top of a mountain when i got the dreaded Auxiliary bat warning light, i had to make sure i made it down from the pass and then get it unhooked, pulled the fuse. After that, no issues, main has been running good in TX heat all summer, and NEVER adding that battery back in. I may add an extra battery back in the passenger compartment, but it will not be set up as the factory had the small one. Worst design ever....
My Aux battery just started getting weak after a cold snap. The Start/Stop light has gone off and I get an occasional warning on the dash that says "Battery Charging Aux Switches Temporarily Unavailable". Hopefully they will still cover it under the extended warranty.
@@rubi-redjeep6765 My fear is that if I get the dealer to replace it under warranty, they will only cover the battery. I will still have to pay for them to put it in. Since I have a 2018 JLU , it isn't as easy to swap as later models as it is under the fuse box as opposed to being under the main battery. I might have to stock up on fender clips instead!
You can charge it by red to main battery and the negative cable to the second bolt closest to you on the fuse box that goes to the aux and you can jump it that way. Very few people know this apparently.
damn... wish i knew that sooner. going on 4th year with having to bypass that stupid thing. also, they make it a mission to get to the battery and most people do not have the skills to get to it... only two ways is through the engin bay and under the main battery and fuse panel or take apart the inner fender and go from under...

Bought my jeep JL 2dr last year brand new. Only has 8000 miles on it and the water pump came loose almost causing over heating and now my Aux battery is dead. Back to the dealer I go for warranty repair. What sucks is I don't trust it now. It makes me NOT want to take it on road trips. I shoulda got a Tacoma.
2023 Jeep grand Cherokee altitude my out of factory lasted 96 day it ended up taking out both battery’s just replace under warranty if not would have cost me 884
So, is there a 36-month "free replacement" on both Jeep Gladiator batteries? Next month will be 36 months since my 2021 went "into service", and I anticipate free replacements if both have that type of warranty.

I replaced my battery due to coming home and finding my Jeep dead. After i replaced it I got the service shifter warning light and now my Jeep won’t come out of park. And i have called dealers and no one has any ideas on how to fix it.
Well my 2018 jk has the same battery that the JL came with, and I still have it... I have 2 12s subwoofers, extra speakers and I still have the same battery, never had a problem. I always remote start, I always have my subs on, I also have a light bar, underglow and more, it's not always a shit battery my brother
In one of the videos, one of the guys disabled the second plunger that tells the computer if the hood is open or closed and in doing so it disables auto start without using electronic means so you can reattach it if you go to the dealership😅 Does anybody know if this has any performance issues if the auto start stop is lit? I'm thinking about buying a Jeep and I have Cummins ram and if the check engine light is on it will drop my MPG. So I was wondering if anybody has a similar experience with the Jeep?
Vampire Bleed. Seen my 08 jk have an auto start short which caused it to stay in a proverbial constant try to start and promoted a vampire bleed of the battery. I am not sure if that strange event can be replicated or roll over to other automatic models.. the main power wire from the auto start box was jacked up and corroded near the battery.. easy fix when i finally figured it all out.. My start stop hasn’t worked in a few months. Weird part is it says it’s “not ready charging” all the time and I have no dash lights on. While i don’t care I’d like to know it’s not a bigger issue.
I just had my aux battery replaced by the dealership since my Jeep is still under warranty till February 2022. I mentioned this and they said if my Jeep warranty expires in February, so does the new aux. battery. In other words, they will not honor the 36 months battery warranty.
That’s interesting, I guess it varies on the dealership. Just because when I went through this, I was over 15k miles out of warranty and they still honored the 36 month Aux battery warranty.
The new vehicle warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Your battery can be warranted up until that point. Once you pay for a new battery, the 36 month free replacement warranty begins, It does not start over when the battery was replaced for free under the vehicle warranty. Otherwise, the warranty could perpetuate forever, if, let’s say, the battery always went dead every 35 months, although that would sure be nice!
My dealer said the battery warranty expires when warranty ends regardless if battery has a warranty. Once you buy a new one then your battery warranty restarts for 36 months but you must have your receipt for it to be honored.
Do you think a faulty/near dead aux battery could possibly cause a random misfire in one of the engine cylinders? My 2017 Jeep GC auto start/stop indicator randomly dings on the dash and then 5 min down the road, my engine feels “puttery.” Soon after my engine light comes on. It’s been through the dealership 4 times for this same cycle of issues. I’ve tried everything from spark plugs, ignition coils, rocker arms, lifters, dealership wiring diagnosis, etc. Didn’t know this aux battery was even a thing until about a week ago after doing some further digging on my own…this turned out much longer than I intended. However, all I’m asking is if you think the aux battery could be weak and therefore shorting or tripping something electrical and defecting the auto start/stop feature, then eventually cause bad fuel injection timing, resulting in these random on going misfires to just one cylinder?
I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but I highly doubt that could be the case. Honestly, I never thought about that correlation, but then again I could be 100% incorrect about that. Good subject to bring up though!
@@rubi-redjeep6765 Yeah, I'm not entirely sure if that correlation is even possible, but with how tech filled these cars have gotten over the years, I figured at this point I have nothing else to try. The replacement aux battery I installed this morning and so far the vehicle has ran great with no dash start/stop indicator or engine light. I guess time will tell. For the sake of anyone else possibly experiencing something similar to this down the road, I will respond my experience after another week of daily driving.

My camper will drain my aux bat if sitting more than a week cause aux for Jeeps runs the excessories and main battery runs the motor it's safety thing so chances of getting stranded in the middle of nowhere reduced by signs and signals are telling you something isn't right with the battery before you decide to take your jeep in the middle of know where. unfortunately stock batteries are cheap. You get what you pay for in batteries. Also have Electronic magnetic pulles shield wired to the main and a winch also have a smaller emp device on the aux. Don't Jerry rig it. The goal was overland off grid for months if necessary recommend lithium ion batteries the one's that look like a six pack of soda 7:21 also a jump start device from auto parts store is a way to avoid the dead battery stranding you. $80 can be a good invest. Aux doesn't die over night it's a progressive issue that will get worse if neglected this being the signs not to go off road or grid tell your ass gets maintenance.
I got a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Willy edition and I think my aux battery went bad, I never changed the aux battery only have the factory one that came with it when I bought it three years ago, do you think I’m still covered under warranty at the dealership?
Question.. you don't have to change the auxiliary battery along with the actual one? I can just change the actual battery and leave the auxiliary one there.. I don't use the start/stop feature.. it was so annoying! But I guess it died along time ago since I get the "A" symbol every now and then..my jeep is about 5 years.. I have already jumped start my jeep like 3 times now
Technically you don’t have to change both, but that auxiliary battery will drain the main battery over time. Which is probably why you’ve been jump starting your Jeep.

@@rubi-redjeep6765 you can bypass the aux battery and remove it... have seen it done on videos and talked about it on forums.... got my wifes jeep 3 months ago used at a dealer and the main battery was dead.. so had a new one put in... 3 weeks later she needed a jump.. the light for the ess unavailable just popped on... going to bypass the aux and get a bigger battery today... the way fca did this battery design is not good..
The start stop battery sucks mine died and when it did it killed my main battery cost me about 400 to get new ones then when it happen my jeep wouldn't even come out of 3rd gear
Interesting that Jeep mounted that stupid battery low and right behind the fender well. You can't go through a puddle now without shorting it out. Makes me really think twice about a newer Jeep purchase.

The batteries are wired in parallel so they will charge, except during starting and auto start. They are isolated at startup and at auto stop so the main battery provides the large cranking power, and the small one keep accessories running. So, if the small battery is internally shorted, say from sulfate (which will happen a lot faster if it not kept charged) , it will cause a short on the main battery as well during the period when they are in parallel - causes lots of odd problems. Battery tenders and regular driving of at least 30 minutes, are your dual battery's best friends.

I think my aux battery killed my main battery. My auto start in my 2020 gladiator hasn't been working for several months but who is going to complain about that. I went to get in the Jeep to go to a doctors appointment this morning and the key fob would not unlock the door. I had a completely dead battery that had not problems yesterday. To shorten the story, I pulled the main battery and it will not charge. Isolated the aux battery and it will not charge either. Not sure it is safe to get my truck to the dealer.

100% right.The batteries run in conjunction. Keeping stop/start off in the long term will cause the main battery to take most of the load weakening the aux. This is why the aux battery is first to go followed by the main. Just leave it on
I have a 2018 jeep wrangler rubicon 2.0l turbo two door.. my battery finally died on me after a little over 4 years so i replaced it and come to find out my jeep does not have the axiliary battery, but it does have the start and stop system... win win for me!
A service adviser from Jeep told me a few months back that they have an issue with their batteries not lasting very long or just dying without warning. He even said that he doesn't use Mopar battery in his own vehicles because of that.

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 Flex Fuel. I never even heard of an "auxiliary battery" and am not sure if I have one.
Regardless, I think I'll stay away from Mopar batteries.

I bought a battery from O Rely and the Jeep dealer service refused to install.
I don't know maybe on the newer ones but I had a 2005 Ram 2500 with the cummins that has two batteries and the stock mopar batteries lasted over a decade. I replaced them in 2018 more out of concern of being stranded not because they actually failed.

The H6 main battery was $180 with a 4 yr warranty, that little AUX14 battery, $119.99 with only a one year warranty??, well that just sucks doesn’t it?
BTW, be mindful of many AUX14 batteries not having a vent hose hole, and the inability to transfer the factory mounting posts to them, the batteries under the passenger seat on the Jeep Grand Cherokee should be vented to the outside of the vehicle.
I was wondering the same thing. I being told that it has to be special battery under the seat. The one that leaks bad things less. But I still was advised by my trusted private mechanic to open windows to vent things.
My '15 KL trailhawk has ESS, but not a AUX battery. The battery drain with engine shut off is huge, and I've had to buy an over the top performance battery so that it wouldn't die. I bought the jeep used with an 8month old Mopar battery that already had a bad cell. My theory is that they system computers act like a voltage drop test, draining the battery. The computers stay on for 30mins after engine shut off, so if you drive short distances the battery never re charges, and loses it's charge over time. You can actually see the voltage draw down from 12.8V to 12.6, 12.4 before the jeep goes to sleep. The battery recovers a little, then drains further with the next computer turn on (open the door). My ESS only works when the battery is at a certain level- it craps out after 3 days of travel to and from work (2.5 miles). If I don't charge the battery, things are good for about 5 months before the charge gets too low, and the car glitches out. I charge it every 2 weeks or so, summer or winter.

There is ALWAYS some amount of battery draw on modern vehicles. The fact that it recognizes when the keyfob is near so that just touching the door handle unlocks the doors means at some level there is a system searching for the keyfob signal.
My JT batteries both went out today. Same thing the night before my remote started stopped working so I turned it on manually. The following day it was fully drained since I wasn’t even able to start it or jump it. Same took my batteries to the dealership and had them replaced for free under warranty.
Seems like a very common issue with us JL/JT owners!

If you have installed aftermarket parts hooked up to electrical, check to see if there is any draw when Jeep is shut off. This could cause the battery to drain. The big thing is that you can not jump start the JL like a normal car. You must put the ground jumper on the main battery and the red jumper on Post #1 under the breaker panel. This will get your jeep started. There are several videos on TH-cam on how to jump start a jeep JL.
Thanks for this video. I recently bought a used 2020 JL and noticed after I bought it, that it wasn’t using the stop/start when I was stopped. When I went to the stop/start gauge cluster, it keep saying “unavailable, battery is charging” so that told me there was some sort of battery issue. I’m outside of the warranty period but dang are batteries expensive. A non-mopar aux battery is between $120-$150 and a regular AGM battery is around $250. So to replace both, isn’t cheap. I just make sure when I get in, to turn off the s/s. I’m not sure if turning it off reduces any draw on the main battery. But at this point, it’s something that needs to be replaced sooner than later…
If you ever get sick of the auxiliary battery. You can pull fuse 42 and disconnect the ground wire for the aux battery and your system doesn't even know it's there anymore but you also don't have auto stop start that is what I plan to do because I just realized I hit 36 months last month and my battery died funny how it happens.
And you have to make sure that you secure, wrap in electrical tape, the ground wire for the aux battery so that it cannot contact any other metal.

been driving my 2018 grand cherokee without the auxiliary battery for 3 years, 70,000 miles now with no noticeable issues. I'm glad it shut off the start/stop. I'll have to replace my main battery now but it's now 6-7 years old so that's normal.
I have a 2020 JL. I check the battery voltage every morning after its sat overnight and it is 11.9. I've told them about it and they of course tell me that is fine. Of course it's not. A flooded battery or a gel battery below 12.2 shortens the battery life. On an RV tour last year my Jeep battery died three times while towing. Even a lithium brick wouldn't start it. Finally got it started and brought a new main battery on my dime. No time to find a Jeep dealer. Of course they wouldn't reimburse me. Discovered that the brick won't jump start a battery that is too far discharged. Bought another (Noco) that has a boost function.

You brought light to a lot of issues that I’m having with my jeep. I’m on my way to buy the “infamous” auxiliary battery. lol
The bigest issue with these are the poor design in the location. The could have at least designed it to go right under the main battery so the easy removal of the main battery would have allowed direct access. But NO...they have to put it under the control module with fuses and so on making it a PITA. Being an engineer myself I like to say....Great Job Guys....You again created Job Security for some folks. You remove the aux battery from the wheel well. You shouldn’t be removing it from above. Not recommended.

@@rebellion310 I don't get it either. Just dumb engineering. I will say that you should definitely go through the wheel well if you replace the aux battery. Do not go from above. You're taking a big chance messing with that power distribution block.
Also, while I would recommend deleting the aux battery entirely, I have replaced them from the bottom without removing the inner fender liner, or wheel or doing anything with the main battery or fuse box. This was a 2018 JLU Sahara

This happened to me. I installed the Mopar aux switches and the same Mopar lights. After 3 months, needed to replace AUX battery, another 3 months needs a new AUX battery
I guess it happens to the best of us!
It's called a core charge and it's meant to keep people from discarding them and they end up in the landfill instead of recycling them. It's not a dealer charge.

I known people with JL’s that had about 4 replacements within a span of 3 years. It’s annoying because it’s a pain to get to that battery lol
My factory aux battery lasted 2 1/2 years before it started causing electrical gremlins.
I have a 2019 JLR stick shift, so I don’t know if this only pertains to the stick shift but anytime I start stop light comes on it disables my cruise control. I wouldn’t mind so much if it was only the start stop that disabled but I like my cruise control.
The $20.00 fee is usually called a "core charge". The 36-month warranty is probably prorated, meaning the further into the 36 months the battery lasts, the less value it has. the replacement under warranty will cost you something. I have a 2017 Grand Cherokee Limited with over 100,000 miles. Both batteries are original (knock on wood).
my Genesis Dual Battery system solved this problem for me. You can delete that battery altogether. Mine died on a trail the last time. I had enough. Your right they know the battery is crap. But it's location is one of the reasons it fails so dam often. Be it floods, dirt/mud or engine heat because of that location it gonna keep failing. Thanks for this video. Just do a aux battery delete. You pull 1 fuse and disconnect negative cable from main battery that goes to the aux battery.

FYI, I just had this error for several months and it eventually took out the alternator and possibly the main battery. Ended up needing both main and aux batteries and a new alternator. So I would address the aux battery sooner than later if you have the auto/stop fail message.

My 2021 with 2600 miles already failed. Thank goodness my other Jeep is a 4xe; it has no start/stop or even a starter (BUT there was a recall about a random shut off while driving...oops).
Make sure your ground connection to your frame is tight and free of oxidation. Its right beside your battery.
My dealership tried to tell me my main and aux battery warranty was only good for 2 years even though its on label. I put up a fight and they replaced them but damn it was an effort.

I'm so confused by this f'n aux battery stuff! So here's my story. 2019 Wrangler JL all batteries were fine, everything working, life was good. Installed a Tazer and disabled the Start/Stop thru the Tazer. Had an appt for some warranty work. got scared and removed the Tazer and reset all to factory. The minute I took the Tazer out and did the reset, dash message "Auto Start/Stop Not Ready ~ Charging". Everything is working fine, no flickering, no starting issues, no Start/Start yayy life is good. I was just gonna let the Start/Stop battery rot in it's little box but after reading this thread should I rethink dealing with the Aux Battery. I was about to re-install my Tazer and forget about it all over again. I was wondering also if the disable thru the Tazer is what caused the aux battery to go out. Whoever came up with this auto start/stop should be jailed!
It also powers the aux switch group, not only stop/start. You can also get a beeffier battery if you get aux switch from dealer, although I,m not sure how much better it is.
I grew up in Franklin Lakes. Used to go to Irelands for wing night all the time. Just replaced both batteries with an Optima H6 Yellowtop (Main), and a Super Start (aux). Pain in the ass to replace the auxiliary, but problems solved.
Still working ok ? Mine died TWICE within a month. Traded it in immediately.

It's easy to get to at the bottom if you take your tire off. Still in a sucky location. Also you can start it by putting the positive on the main, and the second bolt on the fuse box goes to the aux for jump start. The more you know I guess.
My 2021 JLU Rubicon with the stop/start system doesn't have the auxiliary battery. I've also got the new electric e-torque option. Now 2 years in my main battery is dead haha
My gladiator is a stick, when i would shift in 5th gear the autostart would screw up, no cruise control, no backup cam, and didnt show me which gear i was in. When i would shut it off everything was good again

The Jeep's probably still trying to use that secondary battery as a energy stabilizer and since it's discharge that's why your experienced using these weird things. It might even be trying to use it and so when it realizes that it's under it switches back which is why you would get the flick ring and the lights. But as far as voltage, I wouldn't be running with the small battery broken because it will destroy your alternator potentially because it will continuously try the charge a dead battery
It seems like you were not moving when you enabled the lights and the little battery died was auto start. Stop one of the things that you disabled so that the vehicle would be running off the alternator as far as power and not off of that little battery? There's a lot of Jeep guys and they have a tremendous amount of extras on their vehicles that draw electricity and if the engine's not running and you're drawing from it like electric seats, you can do it one time and it will kill your battery dead permanently. You will forevermore have issues😅 anything that has continuous draw that's high like the lights but if they're LEDs they shouldn't have done that. Anyway, I'm just curious trying to get the issue fixed before I pick up the vehicle. 😅

Same thing for me. Have an 18 rubi and have been in and out of issues for 10 months now. Have both batteries replaced 5 months ago and just starting to have the problems again. I May jump out of owning a Jeep for a while until these problems are figured out
Most batteries for all vehicles now are 2 year batteries. If you get more than 2 years from a factory battery your lucky. Its a cost cutting measure by manufacturers. Buying an aftermarket battery you will get 3-5 years.
If you need a battery for any vechile Menards has ACdelco batteries. Cheaper than auto stores. Bought one for my Subaru there. Also have a 2021 wrangler JLU.

My windows were stuck and rolled down! I was pulling a friends flat bed trailer. I was out of town! So while there is no good time to break down this was extra bad! My jeep is a 2020 it! My payment is super high! But all I've ever owned is a jeeo! I still have my 94 jeep wrangler! Which I love so much more then this jeeo. But needed the extra room and truck bed! I was wondering if you thought the water is what caused your battery problems? And do you have any advice on how to prolong these batteries or how to just time it so I can kill it in time for the warranty to cover it!

I installed the dual battery system from Genesis after the aux battery failed a little after a year. Not to mention it's a MESS just to get to the aux battery to replace it under the fuse box.

@@chriscartwright2811 Yes it does. The secondary battery underneath the primary is completely removed. The hot (+) side feed of the smaller battery will interface with the new battery kit... It took a little over 4 hours to install the Genesis kit assuming you have the tools on hand and don't have to stop and get something... Thanks for the comment...
I hate the dual batteries. Lessons I have learned about 2020 Grand Cherokee. 1. If you get weird lean running errors, check your batteries 1st, the engine module is very sensitive to weak batteries and can cause lean bank calculation errors.
2. Always replace both batteries at same time if having problems with 1. They are NOT electrically isolated and a weak battery will draw down a good battery and also mask the actual issues.
3. The replacement Walmart battery is cheapest around and certainly has been better than the OEM main battery.
Thoroughly annoyed at Jeep for a poor job of implementing start/stop just to meet cafe standards.

At least yours gave you some warning. I was on top of a mountain when i got the dreaded Auxiliary bat warning light, i had to make sure i made it down from the pass and then get it unhooked, pulled the fuse. After that, no issues, main has been running good in TX heat all summer, and NEVER adding that battery back in. I may add an extra battery back in the passenger compartment, but it will not be set up as the factory had the small one. Worst design ever....
Have my Rubicon for 1 year and on my 2nd dead aux battery, even under warranty it's annoying to get a 3rd one.
My Aux battery just started getting weak after a cold snap. The Start/Stop light has gone off and I get an occasional warning on the dash that says "Battery Charging Aux Switches Temporarily Unavailable". Hopefully they will still cover it under the extended warranty.

Since I have a 2018 JLU , it isn't as easy to swap as later models as it is under the fuse box as opposed to being under the main battery.

You can charge it by red to main battery and the negative cable to the second bolt closest to you on the fuse box that goes to the aux and you can jump it that way. Very few people know this apparently.
damn... wish i knew that sooner. going on 4th year with having to bypass that stupid thing. also, they make it a mission to get to the battery and most people do not have the skills to get to it... only two ways is through the engin bay and under the main battery and fuse panel or take apart the inner fender and go from under...

Bought my jeep JL 2dr last year brand new. Only has 8000 miles on it and the water pump came loose almost causing over heating and now my Aux battery is dead. Back to the dealer I go for warranty repair. What sucks is I don't trust it now. It makes me NOT want to take it on road trips. I shoulda got a Tacoma.

Fortunately, the Wrangler 4xe doesn't have the Aux battery. It uses the 17kwh battery to keep the 12v battery topped off.

Well my 2018 jk has the same battery that the JL came with, and I still have it... I have 2 12s subwoofers, extra speakers and I still have the same battery, never had a problem. I always remote start, I always have my subs on, I also have a light bar, underglow and more, it's not always a shit battery my brother
In one of the videos, one of the guys disabled the second plunger that tells the computer if the hood is open or closed and in doing so it disables auto start without using electronic means so you can reattach it if you go to the dealership😅

Seen my 08 jk have an auto start short which caused it to stay in a proverbial constant try to start and promoted a vampire bleed of the battery.
I am not sure if that strange event can be replicated or roll over to other automatic models.. the main power wire from the auto start box was jacked up and corroded near the battery.. easy fix when i finally figured it all out..

My battery went bad before 50 miles...... yes 50 miles. 24hrs of ownership and back at the dealer.
My start stop hasn’t worked in a few months. Weird part is it says it’s “not ready charging” all the time and I have no dash lights on. While i don’t care I’d like to know it’s not a bigger issue.

I just had my aux battery replaced by the dealership since my Jeep is still under warranty till February 2022. I mentioned this and they said if my Jeep warranty expires in February, so does the new aux. battery. In other words, they will not honor the 36 months battery warranty.
That’s interesting, I guess it varies on the dealership. Just because when I went through this, I was over 15k miles out of warranty and they still honored the 36 month Aux battery warranty.

The new vehicle warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Your battery can be warranted up until that point. Once you pay for a new battery, the 36 month free replacement warranty begins, It does not start over when the battery was replaced for free under the vehicle warranty. Otherwise, the warranty could perpetuate forever, if, let’s say, the battery always went dead every 35 months, although that would sure be nice!
My dealer said the battery warranty expires when warranty ends regardless if battery has a warranty. Once you buy a new one then your battery warranty restarts for 36 months but you must have your receipt for it to be honored.
Do you think a faulty/near dead aux battery could possibly cause a random misfire in one of the engine cylinders? My 2017 Jeep GC auto start/stop indicator randomly dings on the dash and then 5 min down the road, my engine feels “puttery.” Soon after my engine light comes on. It’s been through the dealership 4 times for this same cycle of issues. I’ve tried everything from spark plugs, ignition coils, rocker arms, lifters, dealership wiring diagnosis, etc. Didn’t know this aux battery was even a thing until about a week ago after doing some further digging on my own…this turned out much longer than I intended. However, all I’m asking is if you think the aux battery could be weak and therefore shorting or tripping something electrical and defecting the auto start/stop feature, then eventually cause bad fuel injection timing, resulting in these random on going misfires to just one cylinder?
I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but I highly doubt that could be the case. Honestly, I never thought about that correlation, but then again I could be 100% incorrect about that. Good subject to bring up though!
@@rubi-redjeep6765 Yeah, I'm not entirely sure if that correlation is even possible, but with how tech filled these cars have gotten over the years, I figured at this point I have nothing else to try. The replacement aux battery I installed this morning and so far the vehicle has ran great with no dash start/stop indicator or engine light. I guess time will tell. For the sake of anyone else possibly experiencing something similar to this down the road, I will respond my experience after another week of daily driving.

side not 5 years no battery issues, just don't use auto start stop and wired the switch to power to bypass the stupid switch..
My camper will drain my aux bat if sitting more than a week cause aux for Jeeps runs the excessories and main battery runs the motor it's safety thing so chances of getting stranded in the middle of nowhere reduced by signs and signals are telling you something isn't right with the battery before you decide to take your jeep in the middle of know where. unfortunately stock batteries are cheap. You get what you pay for in batteries. Also have Electronic magnetic pulles shield wired to the main and a winch also have a smaller emp device on the aux. Don't Jerry rig it. The goal was overland off grid for months if necessary recommend lithium ion batteries the one's that look like a six pack of soda 7:21 also a jump start device from auto parts store is a way to avoid the dead battery stranding you. $80 can be a good invest. Aux doesn't die over night it's a progressive issue that will get worse if neglected this being the signs not to go off road or grid tell your ass gets maintenance.
I got a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Willy edition and I think my aux battery went bad, I never changed the aux battery only have the factory one that came with it when I bought it three years ago, do you think I’m still covered under warranty at the dealership?
I would check with the dealership, sounds like you’re close to the cutoff or you’re past the warranty.
So I Just changed the main battery then I got the error message. So does that mean that now I need to replace the auxiliary battery?

Question.. you don't have to change the auxiliary battery along with the actual one? I can just change the actual battery and leave the auxiliary one there.. I don't use the start/stop feature.. it was so annoying! But I guess it died along time ago since I get the "A" symbol every now and then..my jeep is about 5 years.. I have already jumped start my jeep like 3 times now
Technically you don’t have to change both, but that auxiliary battery will drain the main battery over time. Which is probably why you’ve been jump starting your Jeep.

@@comowhat2744 You can try to run just the main battery and have the Aux removed, but I’ve never seen anyone do that, to be honest. If you do, let me know how it goes. I’ll be curious.

@@rubi-redjeep6765 you can bypass the aux battery and remove it... have seen it done on videos and talked about it on forums.... got my wifes jeep 3 months ago used at a dealer and the main battery was dead.. so had a new one put in... 3 weeks later she needed a jump.. the light for the ess unavailable just popped on... going to bypass the aux and get a bigger battery today... the way fca did this battery design is not good..
Can I "slow" charge the auxiliary battery?
The start stop battery sucks mine died and when it did it killed my main battery cost me about 400 to get new ones then when it happen my jeep wouldn't even come out of 3rd gear

Interesting that Jeep mounted that stupid battery low and right behind the fender well. You can't go through a puddle now without shorting it out. Makes me really think twice about a newer Jeep purchase.
