It’s ironic that people prefer to run a single map 100 times rather than a campaign once. But it demonstrates the value of the illusion of choice. If someone thinks they’re choosing to do something, they’re far more willing to sacrifice novelty. If they can introduce the illusion of choice in the campaign, they’ll have really solved the ARPG’s dilemma of making the early game intriguing long term.
I will never forget how the d4 devs spent a majority of their resource on the campaign with all the quests and cinematics and then in season 1 they made the campaign skippable. Literally killed their game because progression was removed. poe devs are so based for understanding this
The D4 campaign should definitely yield a similar amount of xp as spamming helltides/infernal hordes (currently too much xp), but having alternative ways to level is really cool.

PoE 2 looking so good. I have faith that they will do it right. And it's such a simple thing to implement. A lot of online games nowadays have it, too. Thankfully, this won't be too much of a problem in PoE 2 due to the game being much slower.
@@kiwiinbrazilOf course it is. It is a basic "kill cam" feature that we've had for well over a decade in online games. It uses server-side data to replay the events tick-by-tick. @@sujimayne No, it is not a ''basic feature'', especially in arpgs. A lot more goes into it than ''just code it bro'', like exponential costs for servers.
The campaign is so nice, the leveling and gearing process is amazing for people who don't finish the league in three weeks. At least it's kinda a rush for me, who finishes it in about a day...
Plus, I think it’s important that while the attacks per second are going down the decisions per second are going up which makes us that the game is actually a bit more involved. I would almost say that it makes the game more fast feeling
I don't think they should ever do campaign skips, but IMO I do think it would be nice if they made it to where after you get all your passive points from the side quests you don't have to do it again that league and then when you start a new character you have a few extra points to help level new characters faster.
I could see maybe doing kind of like what LE did could work. Not exactly skipping the campaign but having alternate routes that do skip portions of it that go through the dungeons, which is very nice to do with twinked alts and such.
What if when you start your character it gives you some prebuild option to choose. Then when you are playing the game it will highlight items and gems for that build. In the passive tree it would highlight the next node to choose. For the item, when you hover over it a tooltip comes up and explains why its better to wear that then what you are wearing. Once you learn the game you could start to deviate from that or just choose to not follow that. I think that would be cool
For the new player experience, they should do it like Hearthstone. Hearthstone has an embedded tutorial (which you can turn off) that makes deck suggestions without actually choosing the cards for you. So it could have pre-made builds onhand, and you can choose to have it guide your levelup choices or gear choices.
Skipping campaign is boring and not a good way to test new characters. D3 already did that, played it for six months and never looked back. Ive been playing POE for 4 years now, the campaign helped in making that leveling from new char not boring for me.
I really hope this game is a departure from the speed of endgame that currently exists in PoE. I get that people enjoy zooming through a map at 5x speed nuking everything and I don't want to take that experience away from them in PoE, but PoE2 should distance itself from that and give meaningful and engaging minute to minute combat and not a currency collection simulator.
Agree. I enjoy being a bit slow in poe1, but it's annoying when that's considered "ultra slow". I do hope the standard speed is greatly reduced in poe2. But still has the ability to be quick.
I'd like to see a poe campaign work kinda like how remnant 2 did it to change it up a bit each playthrough, if it's anything like that then perfect imo👌
"What would that look like?" It would look like Baldur's Gate 3's internal wiki...which poe2 has. If you can't get through the campaign with that, grab your wallet and pay $100 for each vapid D4 patch.
When POE 2 comes out, does POE 1 get a massive graphics update to match POE2? I havent seen this addressed anywhere...and how is it going to work for the campaign? Is POE2 a continuation of POE1, or can you choose where you want to start off?
The first part is unlikely. Although quality of life features of PoE2 can backport into PoE1. PoE2 *was* a expansion that got turned into a *standalone game*, it takes place 20 years after the end of the campaign in PoE1. Just treat it as a new game/new character. The only thing that'll *transfer over* is the MTX you buy, as long as it exists in PoE2 too. (Same applies backporting, you won't have a bear or werewolf skin since that's a druid class from poe2 thing) Edit: What the person told on top of my comment is true, this current league in PoE1 is basically a meta league, that's moving the world story forward. In this league we are basically helping the foundations of Kingsmarch, which is a port city in Act 3 of PoE2, the city was first shown in Exilecon.
No. It wouldn't support PoE1 gameplay. The game is too chaotic to run on modern systems at a stable framerate. Even the current graphical fidelity can struggle on high end hardware if you juice maps.
Seeing John at the recent show. They so all suggested supports for a set skill. Its a middle ground. Is this support best? Who knows. But all these supports will work. It lets you experiment and fail but knowing that your choice is the "perfect" one... is yours.
Happy medium is making players complete the campaign with their first character in every league, and then if they make an alt they can create them without gear but at level 70 with all skill points to spend, but no gear (transfer gear from main/stash)

I would agree "eventually" you should feel like a god. But id much rather have everything be harder or take longer but be 80-90% deterministic rather than 80-90% rng and if you get lucky you get to feel like a god sooner, where if you dont you are perma stuck in a hamster wheel going nowhere. 🤷♂️
Nobody is advocating for 30 minute boss encounters. Not a single person. And none of the devs have made any indication that this is the direction they are taking with bossing or maps. You are dooming based on a complete fabrication. It's crazy how people defend one extreme by claiming others just want another extreme.
I enjoy doing the campaign, the first time. I know I would enjoy the game more if I didn't have to do that chore on my 4th reroll. I don't want an instant level 70 character or anything, I just want to blast while leveling the same way I do later on. I don't doubt for a minute that you enjoy doing the campaign and thinks it's good to do, but and this might be hard for you because you are fucking quin, not everyone thinks the same way as you. That is not what I want to hear. If the gameplay gets fast as POE 1 at end.. I will spend zero cents on the game. I am ready to throw hundreds of USD on this game, but it needs to keep the pace where we can play our skills in the GAME not in POB
Campaign skip is tricky. On one hand, you get to the endgame faster. On the other hand, it dimishes the value of the game big time and ppl run out of things to do quick. Campaign is an integral part to a game.

Its just gamers are so critical lately that no game is launched officially, they all use "beta" or " early access" so they can always say its not completely ready and polished if something goes wrong. This is just a launch Quin is right.
I'd like campaign repeats if there were 100x more map generation ect.. ya know that thing Diablo (one) was built on that's been long forgotten. Static maps in all arpgs now sad af.
I dunno. If the gameplay is as slow as it looks, I might give it a playthrough once, and then go back to zooming in PoE 1. I respect methodical gameplay in a single playthrough, but I'm not gonna do that same thing every season. That's where their strategy comes into question. Is Dark Souls good? Is Elden Ring good. Yep. Once, maybe twice. But not 4 times a year.
I see a problem arising... PoE players are expecting a better looking, less complicated, higher quality of life PoE. It is all of those things, but the things they're not expecting are going to be so massively different that I don't see PoE vets liking PoE 2 very much. Just my honest opinion, I think PoE 2 will bring back everyone who quit 1, or wanted to try it but didn't. And the vets will play it for a month and then return to 1 where they'll stay.
Story mode is the best part, D2 is King, D4 is backwards you skip everything and its just silly, you are Godly Day 1 in D4 which is sad, everyone is legendary, I Hope POE 2 you have to earn the title of God, and be good not just everyone get it just by logging in
poe1 leagues wont get smaller - they actualy DeVeLoPing poe2 at the moment, and we get biggest leagues ever once poe2 is out, they could be even bigger
I don't think the campaign should be removed or somehow be able to skip it. I also don't think tweaking it to make it less "boring" is the answer. The answer is to make it SHORTER. Which is too late for that now anyway. But i think that would be the best compromise. That would basically kill the acts speedruns but it would be for the greater good. Make it so an below avg player finishes the campaign is...2-3 hours as opposed to 10-12 or more.
14:50 "...are you killing 30 monsters in dark souls..." no, but im not playing dark souls nor i want to play dark souls "do you need to obliterate screens every 3 seconds, no you don´t " you don´t get it man... Is not about deleting whole screens every 3 seconds. 99% of the population never reach that level, the real apeal about poe is if you have enough experience, game knowledge, currency, spend hours theorycrafting testing and playing the game, you could potentially reach the point were you could obliterate screens every 1 second. Every other game were this is not possible, people eventually just quit because they feel they achieved the peak of their potential. In PoE this potential is so high and hard to achieve that works as a carrot at the end of the stick that keeps players coming back after 10 years of still playing. You wan´t poe 2 to be a slow paced game with no degeneracy? I bet you it will die not soon after if they do that...
Campaign is a good filter for shit builds, although they could make it a boss rush for alts with some hidden paths that unlock after you finished once and boss killing quests that level you to an average level for the next boss
LE basically does this, there are paths in the campaign you can take to skip portions of it, but not all of it by going through the dungeons. Which speeds things up a ton especially when you are leveling twinked alts.

Its simple: 1- The game has a competitive economy, so if one can skip story that means 100% of players are forced to skip it otherwise they would be behind by 10 hours. 2- Progression is what gives any videogame its value, skipping 70 levels in one click ruins the ARPG cycle and player retention as a result. 3- Most players only do campaign and even then its too hard for them, doing the campaign "once" then be forced to skip it means these players wont learn any mechanics. mobs in endgame hit like a truck if you dont already know everything you wont make it a single second you learn these things by getting hit and dying in campaign.

I have friends who *Absolutely refuse to play standard* but also *hate the campaign and never want to run it again and wish they could skip straight to endgame*. They say things like "anything that happens in standard is a complete waste, its pointless, it means nothing". I'm not saying that I think standard is great, but my god, if they're bitching this much when the solution is right in front of them... I just can't understand why they cause their own stupid suffering like that.
@@blugobln85 standard is a complete meme though. What they're saying is that they want poe that isnt void of meaning while also skipping the campaign.

A lot of players don't have the time and energy to research every option and skill, so I think for them it's great to have suggested build options so they can just choose between a few easy options instead of doing a deep dive into the systems. The depth and micromanagement of everything is still there for those who really want to get into it.
The depth and micromanagement of your build is the entire point of poe though. If you don't understand that, you're playing the wrong game.
@@taylon5200 Everyone needs to start somewhere. I think many of those who are "lazy" new casuals will once they get into the game start learning more and eventually also explore the deeper customization options. At least having the suggested options won't put them off from trying the game.
I'm a new player and I started in 3.24 necropolis. I started SSF and did no build guide, the game is complex and has a steep learning curve but it is rewarding as you progress I made it to the pinnacle bosses but couldn't beat them. This season I went trade same build and beat all the content so if you are willing to put in the time to the game you will be rewarded. Doing it this way has my knowledge of the game higher than some people who just follow a guide and have played for years. If you want to get better at the game you have to play the game and learn to understand all the systems.
Based comment right here. That’s how I started but ended up following guides with the excuse that I didn’t have time to learn the game. Filling guides made me hate the game if I failed and got bored suuuuper fast. Playing HC SSF right now and love it
@@garrettholden7784 yeah I've played d4 and LE and making a build was easy. I hate guides ruins the fun of the game for me. PoE 2 looking so good. I have faith that they will do it right. If you wanna be that unkillable god with second to second screen clears you should work for it, grind your gear and optimize your skill tree. Feeling like the ooba ooba saviour of the world at level 20 just ain't it. Really my only concern is that my old CPU is too shitty for it haha
A death recap would massively help the new player experience
or even a replay of the death... wonder if that would even be possible
It's not perfect as it is the server-side POV and will skip anything between ticks, but can give you a good idea of what happened.
GGG already has the data on how you died, they just need to find a user-friendly way of displaying it. That is the only real challenge.
800% Value
I lol’d
He um, ah, he sure um, is, ah quin.
For the new player experience, they should do it like Hearthstone. Hearthstone has an embedded tutorial (which you can turn off) that makes deck suggestions without actually choosing the cards for you. So it could have pre-made builds onhand, and you can choose to have it guide your levelup choices or gear choices.
As long as we all get our Tabassy Rassy

I really hope this game is a departure from the speed of endgame that currently exists in PoE.
I get that people enjoy zooming through a map at 5x speed nuking everything and I don't want to take that experience away from them in PoE, but PoE2 should distance itself from that and give meaningful and engaging minute to minute combat and not a currency collection simulator.
Agree. I enjoy being a bit slow in poe1, but it's annoying when that's considered "ultra slow". I do hope the standard speed is greatly reduced in poe2. But still has the ability to be quick.
Agreed
early access will be an open beta for balancing, and about 6 months later they officially release and add a league
I'd like to see a poe campaign work kinda like how remnant 2 did it to change it up a bit each playthrough, if it's anything like that then perfect imo👌
"What would that look like?" It would look like Baldur's Gate 3's internal wiki...which poe2 has. If you can't get through the campaign with that, grab your wallet and pay $100 for each vapid D4 patch.
id delve all the way though the campaign if i could skip it
When POE 2 comes out, does POE 1 get a massive graphics update to match POE2? I havent seen this addressed anywhere...and how is it going to work for the campaign? Is POE2 a continuation of POE1, or can you choose where you want to start off?
it is a continuation iirc, city you build in the current league already exists in POE2
(Same applies backporting, you won't have a bear or werewolf skin since that's a druid class from poe2 thing)
Edit: What the person told on top of my comment is true, this current league in PoE1 is basically a meta league, that's moving the world story forward.

Finally, someone has said it about the campaign! I also see it that way (although I don't create 10 alts per league or even play every league)
Happy medium is making players complete the campaign with their first character in every league, and then if they make an alt they can create them without gear but at level 70 with all skill points to spend, but no gear (transfer gear from main/stash)

I would agree "eventually" you should feel like a god. Rng is literally what holds this game together if everything is deterministic end game crafts wont feel good. To feel good you must first feel pain
Nobody is advocating for 30 minute boss encounters. Not a single person. And none of the devs have made any indication that this is the direction they are taking with bossing or maps. You are dooming based on a complete fabrication.

Well we haven't really seen much gameplay outside of the first two acts. Even in poe1, exluding alts, you are not really zooming by act2.
His twitch chat is so brain rot

Players shouldn't be force to do anything.
I bet you it will die not soon after if they do that...

as i understand you have the campaign and go through a story and after the campaign is finished the actual game with all the insane bosses and shit begins. am i wrong on this?
if this is the case i would like an option where you have to go through the campaign ONCE but after that you can choose to skip it.
Its simple:
1- The game has a competitive economy, so if one can skip story that means 100% of players are forced to skip it otherwise they would be behind by 10 hours.
