    This is so in-depth, well researched, and perfectly communicated. GREAT job, Matt! I wish that my local HD dealership had one person that could communicate on your level. Constant/chronic turnover of flunkies here.

    As someone who owned a 2016 Limited for 2+ years and rode almost daily, I can tell you that Mr Laidlaw hits all the real points that you could ever want to know about this bike. His thorough review of each model is invaluable to anyone looking for their future Harley. He teaches more about the pluses and minuses than you can learn in a short test ride. Thank you Matt for providing awesome reviews!

    Thanks Matt. I've been waiting for your review of the Ultra Limited. I bought mine just a month ago after selling my '05 Ultra Classic on which I'd put 100,000 miles. Probably only guys who'd owned the pre-'09 models with the older frame could appreciate the differences in ride quality these new bikes with better brakes and suspension offer. I've found myself saying to friends over and over, "This is the best motorcycle I've ever ridden. I'm so happy with it." You're right. Sooo comfortable on the highway, but so good in the twisties as well. There the greater lean angle is great and the linked brakes and sportier suspension have transformed this bike. I fly confidently over mountain roads that used to bump my "oh shit" factor to the limit on my '05. My grandson, a daily passenger, loves the new bike (though largely due to the torquier 128 and louder Bassani DNT exhaust). I've ridden a fair bit in these recent rains and came away with dry boots and only damp thighs. The handgrip warmers are cool (a first for me). I agree with you about the tour pack and latches as well. Two full face helmets fit nicely in the tour pack and all the latches are improved, though the hinges on the tour pack are probably still too small.
    That said (that's a Matt thing there :) ) I'm at the stage in life where this is probably my last bike so I want it to be my best. At 500 miles I took it to The Chopper Place here in Riverside and we put Revolution Performance 128" jugs and pistons on it, beefed up the valve springs and guides, upgraded to an S&S oil pump, cam plate and bearings, and used a Screaming Eagle 515 cam (which we will be changing to a 504 next week). Along the way we found a number of quality defects in the motor, but this is not the place to discuss that, I know. Now the bike feels and rides like a top-o-the-line tourer for sure. For taller riders (I'm 6'2" and 240) the windshield is fine, (I tried extending it with cardboard by 2" to see if there was improvement but there wasn't) I have found the seat puts me forward too far. I've added the WHIM and the wireless headsets. The phone calls are clear. People calling while I'm riding can not tell I'm on the bike even with the loud pipes, though it can be hard for me to hear them at times. When the WHIM was installed I also had the BCM flashed to allow passing lamps to stay on with the high beams.
    Great bike now. And I'm ready to put on another 100,000.

    Great review matt. The limited is the most comfortable bike for the job in my humble opinion. Plenty of real world power, it has no problem climbing hills fully loaded 2up. And is still the best looking touring bike made.

    On the question of 'value'....my 1999 Ultra Classic was $19,400 when new. Brought up to 2019 dollars on the inflation calculator that equates to $29,462. With the added equipment, the new developments in engine technology, the Rushmore improvements, navigation, and all for a lower price, that makes the Ultra Limited a pretty good value! The only things missing are saddle bag guards, CB, and passenger grab handles. The engine on the 2019 is 114 cu-in while the 1999 was 88 as well!

    I’ve had my 107 Ultra for nearly 2 years and can’t fault it. 1000km trips 670 mile per day no worries and still be able to walk at end of day and honestly say you enjoyed it. Redshift 468 Cam and full exhaust system put you up to 105 hp and 122lb foot ponds of torque which blows away even the 117CVO. Well not blow them away, maybe stick with them.

    Drove a beautiful Two tone red 2010 FLHTCU with Stage 4 = 103ci. Great bike but what a beast to drive. I felt like a was wrestling with it and with a passenger only amplified the challenge. I’m 5’6, so lowered the bike, added Arnott suspension, more parts +++++ and still was struggling with it. Went to 2 ‘’ heal boots, still struggled and the ride comfort was just not acceptable no matter how much $$ I spent to improve. Test drove a 2019 FLHTK at season end. What a totally different machine. Day and night. Immediately tried same but in LOW version bike. That one inch suspension height difference is HUGE in comfort. The FLHTK stock is EXTREMELY comfortable and had a 130lbs passenger in test ride. Traded in on the spot my 2010 for a Scorched Orange 2019 FLHTK and added Stage 2 torque kit. Bike will arrive March 2019. Really looking forward to lots of miles this summer. So I chose to buy a FLHTK with most comfortable suspension and keep my 2’’ heal boots. Perfect ride height and very comfortable ride. So easy to handle and balance.

    Man are you right about thinking hard about how you’re going to use the bike before making a decision on which bike is for you. I absolutely fell in love with the night rod. Loved that bike. I purchased one for a great price, since they were discontinuing. Then, as time went on, I discovered I like to ride A LOT. I road to work, supermarket, friends houses, to clear my head, any excuse to get out there. Well, I ended up having to wear a backpack which was super uncomfortable. Bringing my PC and work stuff to and from work sucked. Sometimes I needed to use GPS, which was a hassle on the phone. Then, when I found myself on the highway a lot, getting beat up by the wind was getting old. Long story short, I moved to a street glide and never looked back. Way happier with the bigger bike, way more practical. If I would have thought it through, I could have saved time and money. Time for shock upgrade now as these shorter shocker can get bumpy feeling. Great vid, as usual. Love your content, especially in the dead of winter, freezing our asses off here in Jersey.

    Great video Matt. I own this bike and did some of the upgrades you mentioned. I just finished the removeable tour pack upgrade along with the WHIM for coms. I also replaced the oil pump with an S&S pump (just because of the possible pump issue) and plate and also added a SE torque cam (at the time there were no other cam options). I will probably ride this bike until I can't ride anymore. Can't imagine anything else I would ever need on a bike. Tons of power and torque - loaded up this bike and took it from PA and rode west to Sturgis, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains, Utah, Wyoming (7k mile trip). Temps were blazing - over 100 degrees every day and the bike never missed a beat and the water cooled heads def helped along with the added coolflow fan.
    i would say you were a little critical on the grading (ie brakes) but i'm sure you are just trying to not be a total HD fanboy. Can't imagine what else you could ever need on a touring bike.

    I’m 6’2” 300 pounds, and love my ‘07 Ultra Classic, the 96ci and 6 speed is sufficient.
    The largest difference I feel between my ‘07 and my friends ‘10 and ‘14 is the APPEARANCE of the rear tire, not worrying about non necessities like complicated stereos w/ GPS, thanks iPhone . I prefer quicker turning with less effort of the narrower tire on Parkways and getting through traffic.
    I did upgrade to the CVO 19” front wheel with Brembo (sp) Calipers, and the HD 12” mini batwings.
    I’ll ready for a new one, when all the kinks are worked out of the clutches, brakes and oil transfer... that I haven’t had on mine. Great video...

    29:00 totally agree on people not ever adjusting rear preload for weight. It makes a hell of a difference on any bike. I tend to set mine firmer than I need bc I like the feel. Also good points on buying the right bike from the factory as opposed to buying a bike based on looks and then spending far too much money on touring accessories.

    I think you provide the most comprehensive and honest reviews on the internet Matt. Regarding the Ultra Limited, I have ridden a 2017 for 42k miles and wouldn't trade it for anything. My only suggestion for HD would be to make the gauges more readable under all daylight conditions (speedometer tick marks and the LED display). The white on black LED on the Heritage is a big improvement in readability and hope to see it on the newer Limited gauges in the future.

    Funny thing about harley vs competitor prices since you mentioned indian. Harley absolutely beats Indian in prices when it comes to Big Twin Cruisers. Sometimes as much as a few thousands dollars.
    Almost all of the M8 Softails are a better value than the Thunderstroke 111 Cruisers from Indian.
    And the prices of accessories from Harley is waaaay cheaper than accessories from Indian, as well.
    A lot of people need to do their search on bikes before accusing harley of being overpriced, because in some cases it's just not true, and people need to stop throwing harley under the bus for their own self affirmations.

    • @nomaddawhat7643
      @nomaddawhat7643 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      All manufacturers' prices are close, so I don't know why people pick on Harley, other than it is an easy target. Look at touring bikes from Indian, Honda, Yamaha, etc. and they are all in similar price ranges. I'm not counting the Kawasaki Voyager because although it is a nice bike, the fit, finish, and features are not in the same class as the others IMO. I've had 3 Kawasaki Nomads and always said it was twice the bike at half the price compared to Harleys, but not any more with the improvements Harley has made over the last decade. I love my 2017 Ultra Classic. It's the best bike I've ever had. If Harley stays on this path, they have a customer for life. Also, no other manufacturer has the dealer network, parts, accessories, upgrades, etc. that Harley has. It is a very unique company in that regard, although I'm sure Indian will continue to build up their network and offerings, which I think is good for them.

      @@nomaddawhat7643 What many people, including my self have experienced is they typically offer no discount from MSRP, then add unwanted dealer accessories on showroom bikes. The difficult one to swallow is their fabricated Dealer set up fee's (HD Tax) which ranges up to over 2K on touring bikes at my local Riverside, Ca Dlr. The end result is a very expensive bike, not to mention now add freight. Indian isn't far behind & have copied HD practices. As an example, the BMW dealer next door to them charge no set up or freight fee's and will deal on discounts below MSRP. I own both brands, but HD sales are sinking year after year and they blame it on pure demographics, price gouging also reduces sale.

    • @nomaddawhat7643
      @nomaddawhat7643 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@larryj8924 I hear you. I saved about $100 over the HD price by buying my Ciro 3D filler panel lights from West End Motorsports. I also bought my extended heel shifter from J&P Cycles. I got a great deal on my bike because the 2019s were coming in and the dealership was trying to move the last 3 new 2017 Electra Glides, not to mention the 2018s. Look for a deal & special financing promotions to save $$$ for sure. Of course Matt has me wanting to see if I can get a trade-in deal on a 2019 Ultra Limited, but I don't want to fall into that trap LOL. I think I will just rack up all the miles I can on this one.

    Great Review......a side note on the paint, the 2 custom colors are no longer offered, Harley discontinued about mid year. My first choice was the Scorched Orange but I like the Wicked Red/Twisted Cherry
    as well. And on the infotainment system.... Soundz out of Daytona now has a retrofit kit to allow the install of a 19 model year unit into any 14-18 model. Price is around $500 completely plug and play with all performance options working. It's pretty cool I saw it installed in a 16 Roadglide and every thing worked as stated.

    Great video as always Matt. I have been waiting for this video since 4 months!! All good except that you haven’t talked a lot about it in comparison to 2018 FLHTK. Seriously, the front part of the 2019 model(fork/batwing/wheel etc) feels at least 30% lighter than the 2018 model. I have tested them several times recently. Plz ride both models once again, immdly one after the other and you will feel the difference. I guess even the 2019 seat is some 20% stiffer than the 2018. It actually feels good. Hoping to see your feedback on this... Anyways, I’m just addicted to your videos! Like I said earlier, your reviews are the best among all others. Cheers!

      I'm going to trade in my denim blue 18 for a vivid black 19 limited exactly like this one.

    Great review!
    I just upgraded from a 2010 Fatboy Lo to a 2019 Road King standard. Basic bitch vivid black .. I love every minute on it
    The old lady loves riding on this one.
    I commute every day.. all hwy.. so this thing is amazing
    The new touring chassis is amazing. Bike is so damn nimble and feels light on its feet.
    I recently went old man and started using the windshield and I get it.. I prefer to pull off the shield but when I’m commuting or running long on the hwy the windshield is a must.
    Matt mentioned “recliner”
    My bike is the most comfortable seat I have in my house (yes it’s better than my crappy sofa)
    I can’t imagine what the limited is like on a long haul but at this point the RK fits my needs perfectly. Im not running 1000+ mile trips now so the limited would just be a waste

    Matt, I feel you should rate 'suspension' on its own. Just got one of these, have never ridden a Harley before, but have lots of suspension experience and it's really its own classification now, even with the Harleys. Cheers, great video

    Great comment limited rear suspension travel on the SG and RG ... ride and clearance suffer for sure, especially if you ride two-up. I run with 13" rear shocks on my CVO SG. It does change the stance of the bike, but performance is more important out on the road. I recommend 13" rear shocks if you are OK with the slightly higher seat height.

    ML: great informative vid. I finally sold my DUCATI and now ready to move onto the HD world. I’m considering the Ultra Limited mainly for the extra cooling units in the leg fairings. I left DUCATI because of the reliability issues and the heavy unscheduled maintenance required. Seems like Harley will not be much different until they work the gremlins out of the M8. Do you think that having the extra cooling system in the leg fairings will add to the potential for more motor/ system problems, as well as, increased maintenance intervals/ cost...?

    • @baitsauce
      @baitsauce 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      FWIW, the only issue I've had with my 2015 Ultra is a single issue with the water pump. I haven't changed it out (yet) and I've heard Harley has that issue worked out. As long as it's not a hot day, like over 110, and you're not in stop and go traffic it can still be safely ridden.

  • @georgecostanza2695
    @georgecostanza2695 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had an Ultra limited and loved it, but touring bikes have come a long long way; so if you're being honest and objective about it, aside from style, it's far from a 9 in any category. When shopping for a modern touring bike, features I'd like to have but aren't offered by HD include: reverse, front and rear heated seats, power wind screen, cornering ABS and traction control (finally added in 2020), active suspension, and remote saddle bags.

  • @CraigSmith568

    Are the holes in the filler panels between the fender and saddlebags designed to fit lights? Also I don't know many people who don't upgrade their grips from stock. Seems wasteful to get heated grips and have to buy heated grips if you want to upgrade. Great video and super nice bike.

    • @dh2392
      @dh2392 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rent thru Harley's website. We rented two then new 2014 Ultra Limited's thru a Denver dealer and when we got there we were given one new one and an earlier model with heated grips that didn't work. My hands were going numb on one particularly cold ride. Never really did get a satisfactory answer as to why we didn't get the bikes we rented online, and probably should have complained to corporate, but didn't. Anyway, someone we know that does fly and rides more frequently than we do, said to rent thru Harley's website. I don't live in California so I'll leave the ride recommendations to others.

    Great review and like the honesty in your ratings. I should have the scorched orange on order in another couple of weeks. Compared to my 96 FLSTC this and the 107 are beasts and thankfully, have brakes! I do have the question about the fan option that mounts over the rear cylinder in place of the black heat shield. Do you have an opinion about that? I will be riding in traffic (Atlanta) at times and could not stand the heat from the 2017 on me (I rented one for a few days to see if I wanted one back then) .

    Around this coming winter time, I am looking for a used (circa 2019) 107” Ultra Limited here in the U.K. I would assume if such a bike has between 15 to 20K miles and dealer serviced, I would assume any niggles, problems or dealer call backs for updates would have been sorted.
    Previous bike was a 96” Ultra Classic which was great for what I needed except it being limited at highway speeds.
    Any comments?

    I know this video is over two years old and odds of this comment reaching many people is slim but I'm compelled. STOP bagging on anything that isn't the latest and greatest. In this case we're talking about pre-'09 frames. You 'highly recommend against anything pre '09.' No one would argue the new frames are superior but the previous iteration is still plenty valid. I bet you sold a fair amount of them too. Carry on. Your channel is terrific.

    Matt- with regards to your comment about not ordering ultra classics because the price point is so close between the ultra classic and ultra limited. There is only one reason I went with the ultra classic and that is because I can remove the lower fairings in the summer, On the ultra limited you can't remove them because of the cooling tank and radiators housed in the lower fairings. I ordered the quick disconnect kit and it's easy to remove and reinstall the lowers. On in winter and off in summer.
