Chose a 2019 Road Glide Ultra. Fairing creates a significantly more protected pocket and is more stable in turbulent situations ie. passing semi trucks. Aesthetically, I prefer the aggressive, menacing shark nose which I think matches it's ability to eat the road. Both are awesome open road touring machines. Can't go wrong with either.

I have rented or borrowed both the Road Glide and Electra Glides in the past. I held off buying any HD touring bike, but I eventually purchased a Road Glide Ultra, based on those previous riding experiences...
The main difference I noted is that the Road Glide Ultra feels a little heavier in slower parking lot type riding. That nose gets top heavy quickly, and it can get dicey if you are not paying attention. But on the open road, the Road Glide is like riding in an air bubble as compared to the Eltra Glide. That fixed fairing cancels out a lot of the air buffeting issues as compared to the bat wing.
Lastly, I always feel the bat wing is too, "in your face," as I feel more wide open viewing with the fixed fairing.

Ace's in their places. All big bikes are iffy in tight low speed parking lots and off road dirt trails. But as a slab eater. They rock and if thats where you are planning on riding you will be served well by either bike.

im surprised the liquid cooling only got a brief mention. The hp gain isnt really the big deal with the liquid cooled heads. its all about not having to deal with overheating in hot weather.

This video was about the differences between the two fairings for the most part. They both chose the batwing over the frame mounted fairing. I agree with their assessment.

I rode through Utah in 95 degree heat this summer on my 2013 Streetglide, im runing Modil 1 20w50 V Twin fully synthetic and lower fairings, i just kept moving to keep air flow and i was fine. The bike never acted strange or ran bad at all, The next day i was 12,000 feet above sea level in Colorado and still running like a top. I've had good luck with all different brands but Harley has been a great riding expierience for me. Like anything, check your fluid levels and tire pressure, change the oils and understand your bike. Stuff i read online makes me wonder who the heck is typing.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nobodysreview6137 you said it in your comment. You had to keep moving to keep air flowing. Sometimes people don't have an option such as in stop and go traffic. In those cases overheating can and will happen.

I’ve owned both, the batwing and the sharknose. Looks-wise, I favor the sharknose. If you like the older traditional/heritage look, I would understand you liking the batwing better. Plus I think the reach to the radio may be closer. I have found that the sharknose transmits less turbulence and vibration to the handlebars, something that is most apparent when following a semi, especially at 70mph or more.
I can’t comment on the headlight difference, but almost every road glide owner I’ve talked to had to adjust the lights upward, as they seem to be set low from the factory. I have a ‘15 CVO RoadGlide now, and the light are good at night.
I think the Venting is better with the sharknose, but you’ll likely want to put the proper height recurve windscreen on it and get rid of the factory screen.
And as far as freaking out because the fairing doesn’t swivel with the handlebars, you’ll never notice it once you get used to it.

Great vid. If someone else has pointed this out, please disregard my following comments.
I think the main cost difference come from the fact that the Electra Glide in your demo is a Classic and Road Glide is a Limited. I think if you were to price an Electa Ultra Limited, you would find that the prices are pretty much the same. The main mechanical difference being in the way the engine is cooled - with the Ultras (both models) having two small radiators in the lower fairings. There's also some other minor things like the rack on the Tour pak, etc.
All of this said, I have read that H-D will stop production of the Ultra CLASSICS and sell only Ultra Limiteds in both the Road Glide and Ultra Glide.
I have owned a 2017 Electra Glide Ultra Limited for 1.5 weeks and have 1500 miles on it. Your comments about the Daymaker headlights on the Electa is spot on. The only negative comment I have is that I wish they had put LEDs on ALL lights, and not just the headlights.
    Again, nice video.

A couple of things I enjoy about the batwing, are since it's fork mounted, the bars almost feel like there's a steering stabilizer attached to them. It also seems to smooth out the ride in the hands by absorbing additional energy from bumpy roads.
One thing I haven't gotten used to on the shark nose, is where the bike is going to right itself in the apex when throwing it over from side to side in the twisties. The added weight, up high and out front, seems to act like a pendulum; something I've never experienced on an Electra Glide.

  • @zachgalati

I actually prefer the road glide, I like the more open space between me and the fairing, I test drove a CVO ultra And although it's a fantastic bike in its own I felt compacted I guess. But it is all personal preference I prefer the frame mounted fairing the the distance between me and the fairing.

I own a '07 Ultra and spent almost 20 years on my Tour Glide. I agree with you, I feel more closed in on my Ultra. The Tour Glide just felt a little roomier. It was a great bike, but so is my Ultra Classic. I think for an extra 2K for the Road Glide, I too would save the money and purchase the Ultra.

I think a rider's size would also have a lot to do with the comfort level. I'm tall, at 6'5" and 300+ pounds. I ride an Electra Glide Ultra and I feel the handle bars are too low for me. I like the idea of taller handle bars like my first Harley, a Heritage Softtail. My next buy will probably be the Road Glide model. If the bars feel too far back, I can always roll them forward a little.

You are absolutely right about size being a variable. I've rented both bikes (and own a Road King) and I would have to add the "Tall Boy" seat to both... and I'm 6'2" and 250. I've heard the ideal height for the stock RG is 5'8" to 5'11".

In the 1980's I owned 2 "Tour Glides " the predecessor to the RG . They were fabulous machines which we rode cross country several times. I have also owned 3 "Electra Glides " over the years & like you , find little to chose between them. My main concern is that a frame mount fairing should help you maintain control in the event of say a DEER collision [which has happened to me twice ] I got a buck right in the fairing on a frame mount & was able to bring the bike to a safe stop. Love them both & currently ride a Road King ! Go figure!

I have a 2017 Road Glide and I definitely prefer it over the Electra Glide. I traded in my Victory Vision which I must admit, was more comfortable for me (6'2"). The Road Glide was the closest motorcycle I could find that would compare to the Victory. I tried all the big cruisers and Road Glide was it. Great video and thanks for putting this together.

If you have never ridden a full fairing bike. I would be almost ashamed. My God, I started riding in 1963. Before I turned 30, I had ridden bikes with fairings. Anyone with a lot of miles under them is going to be more at home with what they are used to. If you have ever raced, you will know that every road racing bike has the fairing mounted to the frame for the two reasons. First, it isn't going to affect the center of gravity. Secondly, wind gusts will not input to the bars. Granted, you will still feel them when it is frame mounted but when something has to move the whole bike plus the weight of the rider, it will take a lot more to affect it. You were just out of your element. The first time I rode Pikes Peak, I hadn't taken into effect what the lack of O2 was going to do to my blood flow. Basically, my arms became useless above 12,000 feet and it became a real thrill. You were tired and doing things you hadn't put into your muscle memory. What I am saying is it was you, not the bike. Neither one handles well. In my 70 years though, I have never met anyone who actually liked a frame mounted fairing when they first rode but they always like them after they have gotten used to them.

For a bigger guy, the Road Glide feels less jammed up. You eluded to the more forward positioning of the EG and that’s the biggest factor when you’re 6’4”. I have an 08 RG and like the stability and comfort vs the EG. Both beautiful bikes... I’m partial to the red.

  • @jimmyleonard61

On my '14 Street Glide Special, set up with lowers and the adjustable fairing vents, just like the Ultra. True you do get a lot of air coming up over the lowers work the vents turned the way shown on the video but if you turn them as far open as possible you WILL NOT feel the air flow mentioned. Makes it a lot warmer while cold weather riding.
I now have a '15 Road Glide Special. The extra storage, in the fairing is nice, but I miss my Street Glide.

I can't believe you guys missed this... seriously, the 2k price difference is NOT in the fairing, it's because the road glide is twin cooled and the and the ultra isn't... both bikes cost almost the same (within a couple hundred bucks) when equipped the same way ... You guys did not compare apples to apples with only the fairing being different! How do you miss this???

6'2" and I find the ergos of the electraglide very comfortable. In fact I've changed nothing, stock bars, everything just fit me right out of the box. The seat to pegs, etc, are the same, the distance of the fairing to the rider is really the only difference, and since these bikes don't have lower fairings to encroach upon your knees, that's not a concern.

I have had a couple road glides and the biggest thing I seen is the wind buffering in the bars can be a workout with the Street Glide / Electra Glide vs the fixed fairing of the Road Glide. As for the bars differences, most people change the bars anyways. As for the headlight, you can get daymaker knock offs on ebay for like $100-$200.

Totally excellent point that should have been mentioned earlier. If you ride even a little at night on twisty mountain roads, that would eliminate the road glide for me. Great to have a headlight shooting off the edge of the corner.. (sarcasm). In fact, I wish someone would incorporate a headlight for motorcycles that actually over-corrects into the direction of turn for night-time illumination. (you turn the bars 20 degrees, and the headlight would turn 40 degrees, on some kind of cam mechanism....); you know, actually turning the headlight further up into the turn so you can see what's coming! Also take into account the lean angle- as you lean into the turn (at night) the headlight automatically aims to a lower point on the road. Or am I the only one that has ridden through the twisties on a cold dark rainy night? (north Georgia). Would have been outstanding to actually see further through the turns!!!

  • @bikerheart
    @bikerheart 4 ปีที่แล้ว

So you are saying the frame mounted shark nose fairing does a better job at keeping the wind from directly hitting the knees than the fork mounted bat wing (even with wind deflectors)? I used to do a lot of cooler weather riding on my Electra Glide so this was a problem for me. . .not an issue when riding a 'Wing or Kawi Voyager

i've owned both, now riding a 2017 road glide. what a machine. wish i'd purchased one years ago. but i guess that comes with age. the lowers were my biggest concern, thought i would hate them because of heat but not the case. they're a blessing for the cold though. only negative is that they are bug magnets and make oil filter removal quite the challenge. definitely need the funnel tray. they have shrunk a bit from years past. installed tall boy seat. at 6'2" 230. was a game changer. the new suspension and handling is unbelievable s well.did i mention my wife loves it. that says it all.

I agree that the fork-mounted fairings get a little "wobbly" in high-wind situations. They can catch the wind kind of like a sail on a boat. The add-on wind deflectors increase that feeling. That's why I took mine off! Strong cross-winds can provide some serious cause for "pucker-power" if you catch my drift.

Test drove both the RGU and the UL - went with the UL. I like the look of the RGU but preferred the handlebar position of the UL. I seemed to be able to hear the stereo better at freeway speed with the UL - probably because the speakers are closer to you. Touchscreen was also a few inches closer. My preferences - YMMV and happy riding! Both are great bikes.

After watching this video and a few others like it, I rode to Daytona on my ‘17 Road King. Then, I test rode the ‘19 Road Glide Ultra and the ‘19 Ultra Limited, among other brands like Honda, Yamaha and Indian. I settled on the Limited. I like the riding position. I like the feel of having the controls closer to me. The only thing I don’t like is the open space between the upper fairing and lower fairing which allows cold air through. The thing is, compared to my old Road King, it still keeps much more air off of me than what I’m use to.

I have an 05 Suzuki c90 boulevard I don't have a fairing on it but I do have a windshield and I can tell the difference with the frame mounting windshield when I take it off my big question is when you're doing the corners what the frame mounted fairing out of the headlights give you around the corner

I've put over 20k on an Ultra Limited in the last two years. Many highway miles. Never really felt the wind buffering the fairing that I've heard so much about. and some of those miles allegedly without touching the handlebar.

This was a really good talk. I have a garage full of Harley's, BMW's, and a Ducati. I really really really loved my Road Glide, until she got stolen(that sucked), however my Street Glide is an absolute pleasure to ride. My Street Glide truly is my most favorite bike. So Street or Electra is the right money. It really is.

I ride a 2016 ultra limited. I had planned on looking at the 2020 RG special tomorrow. The UL was my first Harley. I’m curious if I’ll like the RG special tomorrow. I ride the UL most of the time without the trunk except on the cross country trips. Not sure how it will
    Go tomorrow.

If you’re a tall guy like me, the RG is probably more comfortable as I don’t feel like I’m right on top of the fairing. I did ride the EGU with 14” apes and have to say that made all the difference in arm comfort. My 08 RG always seemed a little too heavy. Sold it recently and now seriously considering the EGU with apes.

i've ridden many many bikes. when i had a road glide i was amazed at how many "bikers" asked me how i liked the fairing. it doesn't move? i would tell them, "oh why didn't you say you didn't know how to ride. you're supposed to look where you're going. not what the fairing is doing" still dont' get why you guys can't get around it. oh wait because it doesn't look cool right?

I find my electra glide handles pretty nimble. In a heavy wind the faster I am riding makes the bike more stable due to wind pressure on the fairing. Had a friend who rides a dual sport he said the harley was heavy in the corners. I rode his squirley bike following and found it unstable at speed and corners. My electra glide cornered smoothly and powered out of the corners effortlessly. I do not think he was trail braking or gearing down in corner approaches and rolling on the throttle exiting. Electraglide nimble beast.

I had a 2015 Road Glide Ultra CVO for 14 months and put 22,000 miles on it. I live in San Francisco. I rode to San Diego, LA, Sturgis, YellowStone, Washington, Oregon, Yosemite, and ALL over NorCal. My 110 pushed the bike very well. However I dont ride tons of custom bikes like this guy.
The navigation is GARBAGE and all auto companies need to give up on Navigation altogether and give it to Garmin, or a phone interface like custom companies are doing.
Dropping a cylinder isnt a big deal. Never had an effect on the bike. Doesn't cool it down.
The Heel Toe Shifter linkage went out on me Every 7000 miles and I had to have it towed twice and actually kept an extra linkage with me when I went to Sturgis.
As for spliting lanes, I did it daily. It is a huge bike and you need to be experienced. But it isnt that hard to do. In LA it is VERY difficult. The lanes are not big enough and the drivers are not as polite as in the bay area.
Riding in the Twisties is a chore. You are working at it the entire time. You scrap the pegs pretty easily and you have to be aware of whats ahead all the time. That was the actual only thing i used the navigation for, it showed the road map and allowed me to predict the upcoming turns. I too used a Ram Mount with my phone.
The suspension is crap and needs to be monitored and aired up regularly. Even the dealership said it should be upgraded, which is fucking bullshit for the CVO. Even the TRD by Toyota has Bilstein Shocks. I shouldnt have to upgrade anything on this bike.
The bike is very comfortable. People fucking love it. It was a fun bike to own. But i would never buy another New Harley and probably not even buy a Harley. My experience with Harley was shit.
The heated seats for driver and passenger and grips were nice. My gf loved it. It is super comfortable and you can do 500-600 miles per day no problem. You fill up every 150 miles.
This bike is absolutely WAAAAAAAY OVERPRICED. When you compare these bikes to BMW, Triumph, Indian, etc Harley is the most expensive and you are not paying for quality. You are paying for the name.
I don't agree that people think you are an idiot. Maybe a few guys like this, but most people fucking love this bike. I rode everyday, everywhere, in full gear, in a suit, in shorts, in the rain, sun, and once in the sand (oops) and i survived. I tipped it like three times and needed help lifting it and I am 36 and 240lbs. This is a fucking heavy bike.
I would say, never ever ever buy a new bike from Harley. Never. Buy it used and add whatever you want to it and let the old, rich, dumb guys eat the loss in value. You can buy my 45,000 CVO now for $26,000 just two years old. That is a huge difference. Cheers.

the addition of the liquid cooling also factors into the extra $2000, it's not just the fairing that is different when you consider that. A better direct comparison would have been road glide special vs street glide special in my opinion. Both are great bikes though!

Actually between a similarly equipped Electra and RGU it is only 1k difference because you have to add in the GPS+Security. The RGU still has water cooling the Electra does not. If you want to compare equivalent models, the Ultra Limited is the batwing with water cooling and it cost more than a Road Glide Ultra. The bat wing provides less wind protection by far

I feel must say... I have a 1996 Ultra glide and my fiances dad has a 2009 Road Glide. I much prefer the Road Glide, to me the handle bars are easier to move considering they don't have all that weight attached to them and the Road Glide feels roomier because the fairing is more stretched out and I like that too.

I ride long distances a lot, I prefer the wind protection of the Electra Glide over the Road glide. I'm 6' & when cruising at highway speeds the bike tracks perfect & the wind blows over my head (Klock 6" windshield) The Batwing additionally protects my hands from the wind when riding in 40 & below weather.

I rode a road glide today and hated it. It felt really stiff and wobbly at slow speed. Also felt really top heavy for some reason?? Got in a ultra....perfect and nimble as a bike twice as small. Had a 2012 RG Ultra; loved it, 27K miles first year. Got talked into a 2014 Street Glide Special; nice around town but does not manage the wind as nicely at 75-85 on the open road, 20K miles the first year. Bought a 2016 RG Special and rode to Sturgis 5 days later from CA. I like the lighter weight and shorter bars on the Special. You can easily do 600-700 miles per day. The RG Ultra is heavier than the Electra Glide Ultra with water cooling, radiators and a little more heft in the Shark Nose Fairing. There is more weight on the front end of the RG fairing and feels a little more top heavy at standstill. This goes completely away once you move. The handlebars are two inches taller on the RG Ultra than the Road Glide Special. So, you are right burchmmd. If I want a city bike it will be the new 114 Fat Boy. My road bike will always be a Road Glide. By the way, the new 114 motor lifted the front tire and chirped third gear on the new Heritage; merging on the freeway, 100 comes quickly. I was very impressed; stock bike.

Rode both...have over 50+ years on bikes. Mostly ultra classic's...but i have recently purchased a 2018 Road Glide Ultra.....and man i have to say....i am sold on the Road Glide.. I noticed a difference immediately on the ride home on the interstate. No where near as much buffeting from traffic, especially large trucks, and felt more stable and secure. Took a few back roads home and noticed a minor handling difference (positive) in the twisties. I am a taller rider and the handlebars up and back more are extremely comfortable for me. All the years riding Ultra Classic's i had to have reduced reach bars on my bike to stop me from bending over the tank. I truly am overly satisfied with my Road Glide Ultra. If your a taller rider you will enjoy this bike.
