I also want to share a bit of animation pain that cant be unseen. In the cutscene at the start of halo reach's long night of solice, when we get closer shots of kat and carter talking, every time one shot ends, the frame freezes for just a second on that shot which leads to a very clunky set of shots (maybe its just on xbox one, or maybr its just me)
Gotta say, the BR and I didn't become "friends" for a long time. To me, I thought it was the replacement of my beloved AR, taking away the fun of the spray'n'pray the smg didn't quite live up to. After many years though, I gotta say its grown on me and I'll happily carry one with an AR. The reload animation isn't a glitch, its a warning to the covenant that there is no safety on the 3 carriage train
This was fantastic and I really loved the personal preferences you talked about with the br ammo counter colors (I agree, dark orange/almost black with bright orange numbers looked way better). Please do a DMR one once the Bandit rifle is out in season 3. You could do an awesome Evolution of the Pistol video much in the same vain as this talking about how the look and function of the UNSC Pistol in each title has been fairly different.
I do like the idea that the UNSC keeps their rifles similar on purpose. Not just because it lets them keep parts homogenized when possible, but it lets the soldiers' reflexes take over better and focus on WHEN to use the weapon rather than HOW.
ABSOLUTE LEGEND. For context I saw the pole and that was 2 hours ago from posting this comment. I literally thought to myself it'd be really cool if LNG just posted the video right after this, and to my surprise he did. Fucking LEGENDARY.
Amazing video as always, you really captured everything which is to be expected from you. The Battle Rifle's design is truly some of the best in all of gaming weapons. I remember in my xbox 360 profile bio I made a battle rifle using text, which I had done spending hours editing my profile on xbox's website. I like how you talked about the difference in hit registration of the BR from halo 2 to halo 3, I remember at first everyone was wondering why they were missing their shots. The battle rifle also behaves different in the Xbox 360 version compared to MCC (I think primarily because of tick rate plus 30fps/input lag) and I'm glad you mentioned that. It's sad that the OG H3 BR is truly gone with the 360 games sunsetted. Personally, I've always loved the projectile based hit reg in games. I'm glad bungie paid homage to these weapons in Destiny 2, and it's even better that they are some of the best PvP weapons you can use. I also find it funny how a video about the battle rifle unintentionally helped explain that 343i really missed the mark with weapon balancing and its effect on the overall sandbox combat loop. IMO the battle rifle isn't that great in Infinite, the slow burst speed as well as the super fast movement speed & acceleration in Infinite make fights feel worse. It's why the game is less playable at a competitive level on mouse and keyboard compared to a controller with strong rotational aim assist, coming from someone who has pretty good aim with a mouse (quake/csgo vet here). The MnK aim assist being added in the Winter Update speaks for itself in this regard. To be specific, mnk has aim assist when you're character is moving only, it's basically rotational aim assist for mouse and keyboard. Them needing to add this just shows flaws in 343's game design, whereas the original halo games are very playable on mnk with movement speed and acceleration being slower as well as burst speed being faster. These issues were the same in H5 but worse, which is why so much aim assist and magnetism was needed for the game to be playable.
13.43 actually, when you kill the last elite inside and you walk towards the hallway to the airhockey there is a hidden weaponlocker that opens up on your right hand... took me 9 years before I saw it the first time.. you walk by it really easy :)
10:50 I can’t STAND this argument about the H3 BR… I used to play H2 semi pro and I really didn’t like the H3… with that said I am an avid g*n guy… I really don’t think people understand how fast rifle bullets move. Let’s say it was .308… they would hit target EXACTLY like the H2 BR… it’s the most realistic. Bullets like in the H3 BR would be like 700 fps. (Feet per second) maaaybe 900. It’s not remotely accurate to an a RIFLE especially over distance. In campaign it’s totally fine, but in multiplayer it just seemed like they wanted to make it less sweaty, which was the truth. Anyone who played H2 in its day and got to level 40 plus KNOWS the difference. Anyone whom knows firearms / ballistics knows this… I’m sorry , I just can’t stand the argument . Love your videos , keep em coming my man!
What ive noticed in MCC multiplayer is CE: most tryhard of the playerbase H3: 2nd most tryhard of the playerbase Reach: nearly as tryhard as H3 H4/H2: median of the playerbase H2A: Casuals of the playerbase
These videos are so enjoyable to watch. Entertaining, informative, and very great to watch. The BR is not my favorite weapon, mostly because of how dominant it was in the sandbox. But just because I don't like it doesn't mean I don't use it for its incredible reliability and versatility. Halo 3's BR is my personal favorite and I've found it to be the best version of the weapon when using one, Halo 5's is the second thanks to how useful it is in Warzone Firefight for me. The BR may not be as dominant as it used to be, but it's not a forgotten weapon. Especially with those, like myself, who grew up with this weapon in our hands. And that sound, both Halo 2 and 3, absolutely legendary.
I think the halo 3 BR is great for custom games. It's my favourite fps weapon of all time due to how god it was at everything and it's relatively high damage. It's also easy to noscope at long distances with it aswell which makes it better at long range than lots of other weapons. It has a good mag size and looks great too. I've used this gun for over 3 years and I have this saying "I had a BR" when i kill someone with a BR. It's the reason I love burst weapons in evry game. They're really tatical and operator status aswell which is cool. I've also played a great deal of halo 4 which I think is a good halo game but the BR is easier to use which I don't like because it removes lots of the skill it used to have. I do love though that due to the loadout system, I can always spawn with my favourite weapon. The halo 4 one isn't bad just not as good as the halo 3 one due to a very small skill gap. NOTE: I'VE NEVER PLAYED HALO 2 SO I CAN'T COMMENT ON THAT ONE AND IF IT'S BETTER THAN THE HALO 3 ONE
Honestly still feel like the Halo 3 BR is the best, I never noticed the projectiles not doing damage back in the day but I did mainly play 16 player System Link which could be why. Overall I'll take slower projectiles over "hitscan" in Halo anyday, after feeling the utter pain of the Reach DMR on large maps (it has more range than the Halo 2 sniper) I've had this mindset ever since.
I love your videos and the hard pursuit of detail that you use when you play videogames, I even use it to enjoy more my life. I know it sounds strange, but I love your work so much! Greetings from Mexico!
I'm so happy that you mentioned the BXR from Destiny. It's so sad to see what happened with 343 but bungie keeping their weapon in their current game in some form is so nice
29:27 wow thats kinda cool i didnt know about that, makes me want to play h5 lol mostly for firefight, but would try multiplayer too if i could. too bad its not on PC. makes me want a port even more but the possibilities of that happening are way lower now with whats been going on :c
Great vid LNG. Small correction: in H4, you don't find the BR floating outside for the first time. In the room just before entering the pressure chamber to go outside to that section, the side wall opens up and offers you fully-loaded Battle Rifles. I believe it's a reference to the Halo 2 trailer when the Master Chief prepares to jump out of the space station and on the way he grabs a Battle Rifle out of the wall weapon-holder.
I've played Halo 3 for 10 years and never gave much thought about the AR and BR sharing animations, and now I can't unsee that safety haha. Love your breakdowns of effects on the sandbox. Good work once again man! Fun Note: Every Halo game to my knowledge utilizes projectile weapons at the technical level, even when those projectiles are so fast they are functionally hitscan as you mentioned. Even H5 as weird it seems. There was a video years ago of someone slowing down the physics of Halo 2 Vista to such a point they could walk around a BR Burst as it traveled through the air, and walked into it causing damage. I think this is because of how weapons in the blam! engine initially worked, and that part of the engine never needing a reason to evolve. Ultimately though when we talk about hitscan vs projectile its a sandbox conversation so people reasonably call H3 projectile and H2 hitscan. Tag systems are cool.
So bizarre to hear about the thought/design process that went into the separation of ranked and casual play, when you consider 343s obsession with everything being competitive now.
Ironically 343 actually caters too much towards the casual focus. EVERYTHING is so hyper-easy to use that it makes the game feel sweatier since everyone is a death machine now.
@@LateNightHalo Hmm, never thought of it that way. I guess you're right, when everyone is hyper-lethal, everything will feel sweaty, and the actual sweats will come out on top even more so because of it.

While I did not love Halo 5, this video really put into prospective for me that I'm glad it had its own vision. The BR design in 5 looked so cool but was not very much fun to use. Great video and very interesting.
Was not expecting the destiny br on here but it's my favorite weapon in the game and the best thing is that the shader I use for my armor make the weapon pure black so when I first put it on I was so happy great video as always you should do a mod let's play at some point that would be cool
12:54 omg i need those in a campaign and firefight mod also might actually be interesting if they actually just added it to reach, could start out as a rotating playlist event. same with other weapons. H5 did it i dont see why mcc can't. imagine playing with a br or dmr in halo ce and you can argue it doesn't need it or would ruin the games but no it wouldn't, it would just be a game mode option and would be cool to see.
Would really love to hear your interests with Sonic. Considering the recent years, its been good to be passionate about the series. And your in depth and appreciation for smaller details is kinda what makes sonic so lovable. You're the perfect person to talk about it.
I always feel sad for halo5. So much effort is put into designing the game, from weapon balance to art details, but 343 wasn't able to meet fans demands on many other aspects, which made all the effort kinda go to waste.
Weapon balance was definitely more of their issue. They knew how halo used to be balanced but instead chose to chase the COD style of design a weapon sandbox
I always felt the classic Battle Rifle's stiff animations in Halo 5 and Infinite were intentional, to give it a more distinctly classic feel compared to the modern version, similar to the CE Magnum
The OG BR has always been one of my favorite guns in any shooter. Probably also explains why I love the pulse rifles of Destiny, as you mentioned, or guns like the Hemlok in Titanfall. It’s a shame the more recent iterations haven’t felt quite the same. I don’t hate them, but they lack that perfect punch that I love to see from burst rifles. Great video! Also- Twilight Princess is an excellent choice. It’s been my favorite Zelda since it came out. Love the whole franchise, but that game is just absolutely peak. Mostly for the atmosphere like you said, but it also has my favorite dungeons by far.
It's so strange to see so much of the weapons in first person. The last Halo game I played was 3 on the 360 and it definitely was not on a widescreen TV. It was on a real small CRT TV. I'm taking the ones that had a built in VHS player.
So glad to see that the BXR from destiny make the video! I had a demolitionist adrenaline junkie roll from before they updated the perk pool but that thing is an absolute monster in pve and pvp. Funny to see the points you touch on about the BRs history and to see it still being a beast in destiny lol. It just got a slight range nerf to bring it more in line with other 450 pulses but she’s still gonna be a monster! That lightweight buff along with its ease of use and wide “optimum” range the BXR ain’t going no where 😂 Awesome video! I would love for you to cover some destiny topics you find interesting but whatever you up I’m sure I’ll be watching it 🙏

I also want to share a bit of animation pain that cant be unseen. In the cutscene at the start of halo reach's long night of solice, when we get closer shots of kat and carter talking, every time one shot ends, the frame freezes for just a second on that shot which leads to a very clunky set of shots (maybe its just on xbox one, or maybr its just me)
Zelda is so dope. The lore hunters come up with some pretty intriguing stuff. Definitely a rabbit hole I enjoy going down
15:38 "expand Halo's reach" I see what you did there. Whether it was intentional or not it's a juicy pun, very nice.👌
The more I think of it. The fact that MCC exist is something not many franchise will ever give their players
Btw thanks for the answer in the end of the video XD
These videos are overly entertaining, please keep up this series!! ❤
certified battle rifle moment
13.43 actually, when you kill the last elite inside and you walk towards the hallway to the airhockey there is a hidden weaponlocker that opens up on your right hand... took me 9 years before I saw it the first time.. you walk by it really easy :)
I like the BR kits made for Infinite so fucking much
10:50 I can’t STAND this argument about the H3 BR… I used to play H2 semi pro and I really didn’t like the H3… with that said I am an avid g*n guy… I really don’t think people understand how fast rifle bullets move.
What ive noticed in MCC multiplayer is
CE: most tryhard of the playerbase
H3: 2nd most tryhard of the playerbase
Reach: nearly as tryhard as H3
H4/H2: median of the playerbase
H2A: Casuals of the playerbase
Lmao halo 2 is by far the most competitive.
Let's goooo
New LateNightGaming Weapon history video!
It’s Crazy how from halo 2 chef is wearing the same armor to halo 4 and yet new stuff as well as weapons in the ship there’s new looking weapons
23:00 yeah halo 5 has gotta be my fav fps game lol, thruster is just rly fun to me.
I'm all for you branching out in different topics. I find your stuff insanely relaxing to listen to
Honestly still feel like the Halo 3 BR is the best, I never noticed the projectiles not doing damage back in the day but I did mainly play 16 player System Link which could be why.
Much appreciated!❤
9:40 Thank you, for that Taras, now it's gonna bother me every time I play Halo 3 for the rest of my life.
I am so glad you started this video by mentioning the Halo CE pistol. 👍🏻
I'm so happy that you mentioned the BXR from Destiny.
It's so sad to see what happened with 343 but bungie keeping their weapon in their current game in some form is so nice
Too bad its getting a zoom nerf. I have mine stacked with 99 stability and 98 handling.
29:27 wow thats kinda cool i didnt know about that, makes me want to play h5 lol mostly for firefight, but would try multiplayer too if i could. too bad its not on PC. makes me want a port even more but the possibilities of that happening are way lower now with whats been going on :c
It lives on in destiny 2 and its really good to boot
Great vid LNG. Small correction: in H4, you don't find the BR floating outside for the first time. In the room just before entering the pressure chamber to go outside to that section, the side wall opens up and offers you fully-loaded Battle Rifles. I believe it's a reference to the Halo 2 trailer when the Master Chief prepares to jump out of the space station and on the way he grabs a Battle Rifle out of the wall weapon-holder.
I *refuse* to believe Halo 4 dropped on the 360. There's no way I'm that damn old.
I never noticed the glitch with the safety, until you mentioned it, and now that I've seen it I cannot unsee it.
Man I love these videos. I love how there so comfy, entertaining, and educational. Keep up the amazing work Mr. L N Gaming!
45:47 Hah, I'm playing through Minish Cap for my first time on Wii U. It's super fun and I wish I had it on the GBA as a kid
Love seeing the BXR-55 included. Love that it can live on in Destiny as well as a faithful recreation.
Rest in peace spongebob music. End of an era.
Brs are so fun and the evolution of it is awesome and the different designs and variations of them are awesome
Nice nod with the chapter title layouts. Subtle.
Thank you! I feel clever when er I do them haha
cant wait for the future videos thanks for letting us know at the end and stuff
So bizarre to hear about the thought/design process that went into the separation of ranked and casual play, when you consider 343s obsession with everything being competitive now.
Ironically 343 actually caters too much towards the casual focus. EVERYTHING is so hyper-easy to use that it makes the game feel sweatier since everyone is a death machine now.
@@LateNightHalo Hmm, never thought of it that way. I guess you're right, when everyone is hyper-lethal, everything will feel sweaty, and the actual sweats will come out on top even more so because of it.
@@gagefisher4785 some of 343’s ex multiplayer devs have recently said they feel that the studio focused too much on ease of use and that it makes the game hard to play online since everyone is going on killing sprees
I always wondered how a Reach BR would have been like
it was planned I think in concept art, along with stuff like an LMG
@@jurassicarkjordanisgreat1778Most of Halo Five weapons are reused reach concept art with the new unsc design. It was planned for their to be a new weapon manufacturer who used those designs…
But some reason that lore got cut?
They scrapped a really cool odst team finding the prototypes deep in a reach bunker :)
34:56 the barrel has not changed much other than length , I think you mean the compensator . That’s the thing on the end of the barrel. They have gone with something similar to the real life Gama compensator which can be used on the AR15 or an AR10 M4 etc
My takeaway from this whole video: 343i has no clue what Halo actually was and has completely run the series into the ground
I’ll be honest, I don’t like Call of Duty, but I still love your videos on the evolution of its weapons.
i always loved this series
welcome back, man
we need to see a new reshade video for CEnshine
Another banger video! 💛
Thank you for uploading it. I love long TH-cam video essays.
Man, you explained so well what never felt right to me about Infinite's BR
This is a massively improved video. Kudos
9:35 I've been playing this game since 2008, and now I'm going to notice this all the time.
...How could you...
Hot take but I prefer projectile over hit scan. To me it feels more forgiving if you miss target slightly
I always felt the classic Battle Rifle's stiff animations in Halo 5 and Infinite were intentional, to give it a more distinctly classic feel compared to the modern version, similar to the CE Magnum
I think it was just rough animation quality lol
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
H3 shotguns melee bothers me so much because of the disappearing hand and now this. I will never unsee this
It's so strange to see so much of the weapons in first person.
That lightweight buff along with its ease of use and wide “optimum” range the BXR ain’t going no where 😂
Awesome video! I would love for you to cover some destiny topics you find interesting but whatever you up I’m sure I’ll be watching it 🙏
Every video analysis you do makes me miss the old Bungie and good Halo days and further expands on 343 incompetence
I’d love to see an evolution video for the M1 grand or AK-47 from cod
Halo and 343 are truly a Shakespearean tragedy
I honestly did not think you would talk about the destiny battle rifle but im glad you did
24:44 the H5 red dot was a legit abomination… it’s NOT the BR!! I like many other things .. but things about it… but that red dot DESTROYED IT. It absolutely KILLED IT.
