- While the Master Chief may be the mascot of the Halo series, some could argue they remember Halo more for the terrified foot soldiers of the Covenant.. The iconic Grunts. Known for their excellent humor, large numbers and tendency to flee at even the slightest form of danger, in this evolution video, we will be taking a look at the Grunts journey through Halo’s history. Seeing as Halo is over 2 decades old, they’ve appeared in many forms and there’s a lot to cover. The fact that a 20 year old game design has been basically unchanged (in the case of Infinite vs CE/2/3) and still looks great is a testament to how far Halo was ahead of its time
Wrong. 343 Has been changing way too much and couldn't even make a new grunt animation. They modified the halo shit 5. Version and called it a day after some model swaps. It's such a shame that halo actually gives a fuck about modern shooters. Halo is fucked unfortunately thanks to 343

I actually love the infinite grunts, they look and are pretty swell. Though I will always love the reach grunts
I wouldn't say "ahead of it's time" more that the Design is just smartly made to be unique enough to not become dated, so more "timeless" than "ahead of it's time".

I'm a classic Halo fan, but Infinite's Grunts are my favorite. Even more chatty and dangerous. Grunt Ultra (white armour) finally have shields !
Don't play legendary on Thunder because the grunts Ultra Will wreck you
Some of the Grint Ultras in Halo Reach had energy shields

One of my favorites is an interaction between a grunt and an elite when they lose line of sight with the player;
Grunt: "the human is gone! WE'RE SAFE!"
Elite: "you're safe when I say you're safe. Keep looking!"

Infinite has my favorite grunts in the series solely because of their dialogue. I died to one and he said "Yeah, try to fight back now you dead idiot!!!" Although 3 has my favorite design
I grappled a grunt and as I zipped to him he said "THE PHYSICS OF THIS ARE QUESTIONABLE!" 😂

I liked a lot of the 343 art style, and I'm not afraid to say that I miss most of it, and I think they copy+pasted too many things from the original trilogy. Like master chief's mjolnir for example.
@@jackcolson4745 I think Infinite is good in about 70% of it, but the Mjolnir just looks odd imo. However the guns and enemies were spot on, I still can't get over those Elites man...

I’ve always loved the grunts they are special. Unique, cute and funny creatures. I think my favorite in-game are Halo 2 since you get to experience them often as allies and enemies. Really like the Halo 3 ones too. Would like to see the alternate H1 style and the grunt deacon from wars return. Reach ones were fun

I laughed the 1st time a Grunt actually meleed me to finish me off!
There dialogue is simaler to the xbox 360 1 liners of halo 3, but less raspy.
I like all grunts apart from the Halo 4 ones.

I really like the slight differences in the Infinite Grunt’s armor. It makes it look scavenged and slapped together
After the amount of abuse the alien races have been through, through all of the games
I wouldn't be surprised they just slap together their armor now not giving two craps about it knowing they'll die either way

Something else I saw about Halo Infinite grunts is that they have the ability to NOT go down with their own ship when going on a suicide charge. Sometimes if they think you're not watching, they ignite the grenades, run as fast as their tiny legs can manage, then just drop them at your feet and try to run clear of the blast.
Evolution of the drones would be cool along with the engineers. But for me my favorite version of the grunts has to be Halo Combat Evolved. Their design matched perfectly with their silly voices

The grunt goblin was such an interesting idea. To me a hackathon sounds like something that 343 could really use right now for Infinite to help prevent burnout in the team while offering the player base something unique and special to keep engagement.
Honestly, it better be in firefight, but I think it should have a slight design change, more smooth surfaces and a little less detail or to match the bainished, give the goblin, spikes, scrappy armour with gaps and rope
The CE grunts and there voice lines were always my favorite and they came with two iconic armor designs. Sometimes i impression myself and act like a typical CE grunt would while playing CE campaign lol. "No not me!" "Bad bad cyborg!" "Leader dead run away!"

That grunt voice at the end was spot on, honestly I really hope 343 would get you to do some voices for them later down the line, maybe if Infinite gets a firefight mode you could be an Easter egg voice every so often

1 year later and LNG’s Grunt impression is still the best one I’ve ever heard to date.
I never knew me and grunts had so much in common! We both love to nap, can’t keep up, says things we don’t think are funny but everyone else thinks are, swears insults, love food nipple, man I could go on!

25:00 I was REALLY hoping for a Banished Grunt Goblin boss fight in Infinite. It's really a missed opportunity since they had 2 HVT grunts in game. I was let down to say the least
Imagine if we get to have the Propaganda Grunt as a boss fight.
Like at first he appears as just a normal Grunt then he hops into a Goblin and begins to tear shit up
Maybe for the DLC.

Fantastic video! The Infinite Grunts have definitely become my favorite grunts in the series. I absolutely love the animation work put into them, there's so much personality in their exaggerated and goofy movements! You can definitely tell that the animators at 343 were having a blast animating them! Their dialogue is also top tier, with Glibnub's propaganda standing out.
That poem… it was beautiful. Up there with Poe and Austen. Seriously one of the greatest contemporary writers of our human history. That grunt is truly one of the greatest poets of all time and he deserves to have his works published.

This was fun! CE grunts will always be my favorite, but Infinite is pretty good. And the impression was just awesome!
Honestly, they suffered from the 343 need to change things just to change them, but the new ones are solid, and the Goblin is amazing. I loved it in Halo Wars 2 and definitely want to see it come to infinite!

The Halo 4-5 dark years of Grunt design are staggering to behold (that some of those designs were greenlit is honestly astounding!). But it brought us to the Infinite, where 343 knocked it out of the park (re: Grunts at least!).

I have only played the first Halo, so I'm biased. But I loved the Halo 1 grunts. So full of character, and screams. Lots of screams.
I will never forget deciding to take a warthog up that twisty ramp in the snowy area, and not knowing there were grunts waiting for me at the top....until after 10 minutes of failing to get the warthog up the ramp I hear "What's TAKING him so LONG?!?" from at the top of the ramp. Another 5 minutes of warthog fails and then I hear "I can't take it any more I gotta KILL SOMETHING! RAAAAA" and me and my warthog were bombarded with plasma grenades. I exploded mightily, and was greeted with "DIBS ON HIS HELMET!"
I couldn't help smiling at those adorable little f**kers lol.
Not sure what a "Food Nipple" is, but I think the Brutes reference it in Halo 2's Arbiter cutscenes, while they're dragging Thel through the dungeon.
I didn't care for the Reclaimer Saga design of the Grunts. The enlarged heads made headshots much too easy, so they weren't much of a threat, and their kamikaze attacks looked far too robotic. Bungie Grunts would scream and flail their arms as they charge at you, while 343's Grunts just hold both grenades over their heads as they speedily stomp toward you. Not as funny.
I'm not opposed to their being multiple designs, though. Similar to how Jackals and Skirmishers are the same species, I always saw the new designs of the Covenant as something of a different "race" of the same species. The obvious exception here is The Arbiter, since he existed before the 343 games.
Food nipple is a blue substance in a bottle with a nipple. The stuff grunt eat
It’s basically the grunts rations. Think of it like a hamster drinking his water out of a hamsters water bottle (I have no idea what it’s called)
In contact Harvest they are described as free-standing food dispensers, with long tubes and receptacles that end in a nipple the Grunts use to distribute the food into their gullet.
I love that halo infinite iddle animation when they shake up quickly, it's so funny and cute at the same time
I love the infinite grunt. I hope they’re proud of it. The fact they were able to improve upon something that was pretty perfect was awesome. Also that was a very good grunt impression.

I always loved when the grunts acted like brutes on purpose as if to mock them. They usually did it when small debris was in front of them.
If the grunts started as how your little kid brother would play an fps then halo 4 and 5 grunts is how that little brother who is know older would play an fps.

A grunt in infinite once told me, master chief that he was gonna “punch me in my gas hole” and with a nice cherry on top he called me a mouth breather.
I personally love the reach grants since they speak in their native tongue
Same goes for the rest of the covenant on reach, other then the brutes when it comes to gameplay.

My favorite Grunt iteration has to definitely come from the first 3 games. I love them equally. Although if I had to pick one I would have to pick the Halo 1 Grunt style.
The Halo 4-5 grunts give off more of that "so ugly its cute" kinda vibe tho. Cant forget about the Halo 4 Grunt buttcheeks 😂. Also that voice impression at the end was top notch. The "its the green man!" had me in tears.

Really enjoyed the inclusion of the Grunt’s pre release history. I may be a sucker for it, but it genuinely added to the video. Got some info for your future video on the Halo enemy that shares similarities with Sonic and whose name almost sounds like Lego. H1’s developers posted discarded work for the Hunter on Twitter. There’s an animation of the worms dispersing upon death (I wondered if that bit of lore was a hastily cobbled excuse for the lack of Flood Hunter form) and a model with an arm instead of the cannon IIRC. Can’t recall who posted this stuff, think Marcus Lehto retweeted it.
Sheik posted on there his thought process behind the things he designed. The bit about Bungie attempting to turn H2 into a tactical shooter is news to me, is it true? I know the Pimps at Sea build of H3 has a leaning mechanic.

halo infinite grunts are true cannon fodders, not just by design or made to be goofy aswell, i love them all as great enemies to come up against but during legendary or even laso runs, these grunts are the bane of nightmare cannon fodders with those ultras and disrupters, all players cant even peak out or even melee them cus they kill you so quickly, even during alot of rebellions they struggle against them, like covenant in the prophets if they succeed of taking control of high charity and yapyap wouldnt be a joke anymore, he be takin serious, hense why theyre truly called ''cannon fodders'', hopefully 343 will bring back some grunts of new ranks or even a unique boss like the grunt goblin along with grunt heavies, ultras and high explosive suicidal grunts (better than standard plasma grenade grunt suicide grunts)

I'd have to say my favourite Unggoy is either the Reach or the Infinite iteration. Both are fantastic - although Infinite's voice lines take the cake.
To me my favorite grunts are the halo reach grunts. I just love the design. It’s what I think of a grunt. Especially in halo 2 anniversary.
I have to say, the grunts in Infinite are by FAR the best. Actually shield variants as well as mule pack variants? Great, amazing attention to detail. Beautiful in combat and gameplay and dialogue too! Man Infinite, what an incredible FPS.
I’ve almost never played a Halo game other than the one I own, Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox. I didn’t ever look closely at the grunts, and because of the lower quality models I knew they had gas masks, but I thought the grayish-blue part of their head was their eyes, basically I thought they were closer to bugs than whatever they are.

What I like about Bungie, and 343i they change the grunts even if it's bad change or a good change.
My favorite Grunt is Halo Reach since it's one of those grunts that change the entire grunt design to have armors, and colors at the sametime.
But Halo Reach sadly change their voice to deep, and native language. They function oppositely from their Trilogy counterpart.

Infinite grunts are the the ultimate combination of all the grunts from past Halos. The problem with the 4/5 grunt design is the giant head. Still my favorite will always be Halo CE grunts.

I remember when a couple days ago I was reading some of Halo: The Flood for an animated CE retelling I'm working on, and first seeing that they called the grunts simian, and I loved that you mentioned that they were inspired by chimpanzees in your video! Great vid and dope grunt voice!
