    I think it could be argued that a fourth side exists with the GMU. While they're obviously not very present in the game, I think a lot of the player base would side with them if they were ever fully introduced, being driven by profit. This would stand in direct opposition to Rameses moto of "its not about the gold, but about the glory." They wouldn't be "evil" in the sense that flameheart is, but would have a major impact on the pirates life nonetheless.

    Okay I am halfway this video but there are several points you have wrong. It's more gameplay wise then lore wise you have to reach rank 50 with 3 companies to become pirate legend. In the athena's fortune novel, Larinna herself was offerd to become PL after her first voyage, but she turned it down. And even that voyage itself the crew she joined betrayed the order of souls.
    Secondly the ferryman does not belong to any side, he himself judges who can gain acces to his portal or not. In the same novel, Captain Quench (I think that's his name) had made a great reputation with the order of soul's and was send after Larianna. But when he arrived on the ferry he insulted the ferryman, what gave him a life sentance on the ferry.
    Not to mention he even locked up Jack Sparrow himself, someone we asume to be a 'good' pirate. Or at least on the good side of piracy.
    Edit: Thanks for the heart! Stil a great video though, did like it.
    Also if it was lore wise that you have to build a reputation with the companies to become PL, why do the reapers also count with that?

    Flameheart would call himself king - and to my pirate, no free person kneels to a king. To be prosperous and be free means there needs to be some semblence of order, even if it's just a loose set of guidelines known as "The Code" - and an avatar of destruction such as Flameheart can't bring that. Not saying Ramsey is right of course, but he aligns closer to my mindset.

    I used to be fully Athena's Fortune, but I've come to appreciate both Athena and Reapers. I still tend to lean towards Athena, because I tend to morally side with them more, but I fully support the Reapers view on Trading Companies. I also appreciate that they're the only ones who have avoided the Sovereigns' influence, whom I distrust IMMENSELY, and Athena's complacency in letting them worm their way in is concerning.
    Honestly, while it's probably too late at this point, (especially after the loss of Pendragon), I feel like Athena's Fortune and the Reaper's Bones coming together to make some sort of agreement/compromise would be the best case scenario. They both want some form of freedom on the seas, and they now have a common enemy, so if Flameheart and Ramsey could find some balance between their ideals, I think it would be a fantastic era. When I usually play I'm a bit of both Athena and Reaper. The more free way of tides from Athena is what I enjoy most but don't care for their alignment. The goals of the Reapers aren't my thing but their faction aesthetics do grab me. In the end though if I were to choose I'd probably be a more submissive Reaper in a sense: Still willing to attack and protect my treasure, but not actively on the hunt, and more interested in endeavors like achievement hunting, getting chests, tall tales and fishing.

  • @lachlanokeefe8020
    @lachlanokeefe8020 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Honestly, Athena's is the best "type" of freedom that the options offer. Flameheart's freedom can be seen as "true" freedom, but the problem with true freedom is that eventually it results in only a few ending up with any freedom at all. This is because whoever has the traits/abilities that the system appreciates the most, strength, in the case of the reapers, ends up being able to control others through the endless freedom they have been offered, ironically taking away the freedom of others.

    • @Corzappy
      @Corzappy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's exactly why Flameheart's "freedom" is paradoxical.
      He wants there to be no rules, but not having rules is a rule in and of itself, and he appoints himself to enforce that rule with an iron fist. Really his ideology only works if the reapers kill him and anyone else who attempts to "Rule" the Sea of Thieves, but that only happens if he first takes power over the Sea of Thieves, and establishes his views as the only view.

      I agree, that Athena's way of running things is the only viable option. It's a common and realistic way a wild territory is getting colonized. Ramsey came in as a wild pirate, settled down, brought more people, kickstarted a civilization here and established trade routes with the outside world. He is basically a founder of a newborn country. It is the most non-violent and logical way to do things. And the most boring one. I am not even talking about how well 17th century people deal with locals in wild foreign lands, especially if locals don't look like them.

  • @ianbelletti6241
    @ianbelletti6241 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sure, the Pirate Lord had to make some compromises, but he also saw that Flameheart's version was untenable in the end because there'd be no freedom for anyone but Flamheart if Flameheart had his way. It's for that reason that Ramsey had to compromise while putting checks and balances in place.

    The pirate life is about freedom, greed, adventure, self interest and independence which is what the new world represented during the 1400s-1800s. The true way would be to look after yourself and act in ways that benefit yourself whether that’s making deals and pacts or destroying and stealing, every situation is different. Also strike down anyone who would claim to be king, so the best option would be to do away with all the authoritarian factions entirely. Perhaps a merchant rebellion is in order allied with those who support a truly independent sea of thieves. But only as long as the merchants agree to keep their outside world politics and rule away from the sea and only have a presence for trade and commerce. Maybe even the sirens would join the cause for independence. And imagine if there were some way to control the sea life to help as well. An epic tale that’d be.

    For now I'll keep to Ramsey. While he definitely has his flaws, the other options are just worse. The end of Piracy basically means an end to the SoT so Breathen can go shove off. Flameheart's calling is enticing, as his call is for the 'true' pirate way, but in his transformation he has twisted, and his call is nothing but a Siren's welcome now. To be honest, I have started to separate Flameheart from the Reapers. To me at least, they are two separate factions and should be treated as such. Follow me or die mentality and proclaiming himself as king is anything but pirate, and fly's in the face of what the Reapers want. But why Ramsey? Let me explain.
    Let's say for a moment that the guilds were not there. That we just up and poof away Athena, Gold Hoarders, Merchants, Order of Souls and so on. Okay, what is left? After all if Reapers get there way there is no need for a Reaper faction. So now there is no one to pay gold, the keys to the chests are gone, skulls become paper weights, no one to buy your fish and there is now no goods in the SoT. It is basically a rotation of whatever is floating around. Congrats you have a chest! That you can't open. A skull that no one wants and you just whispers at you, and a pig that just eats your food. Not to mention with the lack of goods flowing into the SoT we now have no cannonballs, no sails, no iron to make weapons, no one to make your drinks or make new clothes. Basically, without the deal Ramsey set up, this is just a wild place where you'll eventually run out of stuff, can't even fight without weapons and cannonballs. Oh but the Reapers will just take over all those services. So nothing changes then? Instead of multiple guilds keeping each other in check you want ONE guild with all the power? That means they control you, so how is that any different from Flameheart? I honestly think the Reapers have a place in the current deal, to keep the pirate life alive and as a check to the balances. They have their spot, they just need out of Flameheart's influence.

    The thing about the reapers is that their goals don't make a ton of sense.. like, think about it. Flameheart becomes king and kicks all the trading companies out of the sea of thieves. where do you sell your loot now? you're not opening those chests without a skeleton key and crates or skulls aren't really valuable to the average pirate so either a ton of pirates just cannot get any loot or they'll have to end up selling to someone with a skeleton key the same way they do now. and it's not like there are a lot of rules to be followed in the sea of thieves at the moment either, you don't need to be a reaper to sink people for their loot (or even just for the fun of it) what difference would overthrowing the pirate lord make?

    both Athena and Reapers are needed to keep the Sea of Thieves stable while keeping the spirit of the intent in tact. much like how Rare seems to want players to act, having a balance of both is needed for an optimal experience.
    that being said i personally will always be billigerently against The Grand Maritime Union. the microcosm of trade Athena provides keeps the supplies in the Sea of Thieves flowing. but as soon as you become connected to another trading market, you start to become a state.
    tactically speaking, i think the Reapers targeted Golden Sands Outpost was because it seems semi-cannonical new ships come in from the west. so having a fortress where new ships come in would be a really good way to keep the Sea of Thieves isolated from other trading markets. but now with the border pushed away we may see another targeted attack against either Dagger Tooth or Plunder to try to re-establish a border.

To constantly kill and steal and consume until nothing is left is a drain on one's very spirit, and skeletons are doomed to a cold life without food, sleep or comfort. Granted, I don't really agree with all of Ramsey's decisions, such as him tolerating Rathbone's betrayal and allowing the Gold Hoarders to exist, but I believe his aims to be good, and the other trading companies perfectly noble. The Order seeks to free stranded, skelly cursed souls and learn their secrets, and without the merchants, there would be shortages everywhere. Trade simply must happen, and as long as the merchants retain their pirate allegiance, it'll all work out.

Maybe forcing Flameheart and the Pirate lord into a shaky alliance to preserve the Sea of Thieves, there's probably a lot of character development for the Pirate Lord and Flameheart in there too somewhere.

    Mike Chapman describes the hourglass system as "choosing between good and evil".
    Athena's Fortune is always presented as heroic, noble and good while Flameheart is always presented as entitled, manipulative and selfish.
    Even with all the complicated and conflicting motives in this video, at the end of the day, it is still just presented as good VS evil.

      The story and politics of sea of thieves would be fine if they didn't make us pick sides. The story is so one-sided it isn't even fun. They give us a choice to side with the reapers but not a reason.
      The athenas fortune is full of characters that you are supposed to care about and you have good reasons to side with them but the reapers are just the other side you can pick. Picking reapers is just to see what would happen when the bad guys win.
      The story feels like it was written before these community choices were a thing and hasn't evolved since. I hope the story changes, the reapers have potential to be very interesting characters and I would hate to see them just be comically bad guys with no redeeming qualities.

    Because the sea of thieves thrives off of conflict and war, it may be best neither faction is eliminated. If Athena's Fortune were eliminated, the Reaper's Bones would kill off the remaining sources of their plunder, they would run the economy dry and the Sea of Thieves would die.
    Meanwhile, if the Reaper's Bones were to be eliminated, the Sea of Thieves and the frontier it holds would be threatened by the trading companies' control. The Sea of Thieves would die off as it's spirit would be forever lost.

    While reaper GAMEPLAY is true piracy, reaper POLITICS are not.
    Flameheart literally wants to control the seas under his dominion. Under him, any pirate would become his minion that is forced to move at his command.
    Free men would cease to exist as there would only be reapers and the rest of the world waging war, as anyone not confirming to either side would be annihilated or forced to work as a slave.
    I am not in favor of any faction reaching full supremacy, but I despise Flameheart the most because he is the only one that, lorewise, actually wants supremacy, while the Piratelord, who I don't like as a person, at least doesn't want to inhibit out freedoms.
    I guess there's the huge trade empire thingy in the lore too, always forget their name, that want real supremacy, but since they aren't that active in the game yet, they aren't on my agenda.
    Overall, I love reaper gameplay, but I hate them from a lore standpoint.
    And anyone that supports Flameheart in community events is helping them take away our freedoms.
    Lore aside though, obviously Flameheart will never gain proper control, as this is a sandbox video game.
    So choose who you want, just don't try to explain to me that Flameheart is the real pirate, when he's factually more like an empire dictator that wants to rule and conquer.
    He's not a man that loves freedom at all, he loves power.

    The differences, despite some similarities, comes at the notion that both Companies have entirely SPLIT the concept of Piracy... with only one radically straying far from it. Piracy has been applied to those who were either Pioneers or even Trading Companies that were on the wrong end of the Law... but the Pioneers are more important, since they have always been the very essence of adventure, glory and freedom... the very same type of person that the Pirate Lord was.
    It perfectly falls into the mold in which the Athena's Fortune advocate for... and I assume the problem comes in at the assumption that the Trading Companies have pretty much influenced the old world's rat races over unto Sea of Thieves. However, remember that these Trading Companies are being POLICED by the Athena's Fortune should they step out of line. Also, assuming the problem being Ramsay's character of being full of himself... that shouldn't be a major factor. Character is a stupid way of seeing things.
    So, think of it this way... if the Trading Companies remain in the Sea of Thieves, whilst Pirates have the means to loot and plunder their vessels... it brings a sense of balance. Like a farm of some sorts.... Reap what you sow. So the Athena's Fortune may know a thing or two.
    As for the Reaper's Bones, THEY would be the ones to completely break away from the concept of Piracy in favor of some "might makes right" ideals. They could easily be described as a Roman/Mongol Horde-esque "civilization" of Gladiators (or Gypsies) clashing and blowing each other out of the water... effectively creating an even bigger problem, which is self-destruction. Should they ever allow Flameheart to return, he'll see to it that we lose the rite or will to do as we please... and he KNOWS it. Because Flameheart, before even adopting the Servant of the Flame, had abandoned the concept of Piracy for the thrill of battle. He lost interest, and will see to it that his new interests are thrown in to ruin the Sea of Thieves.
    Now it isn't to say "might makes right" is necessarily bad for Pirates... Pirates in history have always gotten around by being the toughest nails. However, to completely single this concept out with Piracy is where things will keel over. So there's my thesis.

    If one's really in the Reapers because they want a survival of the fittest free for all, then they shouldn't be hiding behind a conglomerate of mask-wearing edgelords. They should be making a unique name for themselves like Flameheart and Ramsey did. The seas are already free as they are. There's no man-o'-wars protecting treasure fleets from the greedy grasp of singular pirates, and alliances are all self serving whether under reaper banners or trading company aligned pirates.
    The only reasons to stick with Flameheart's Reapers are (a) to have an excuse for slaughter, (b) because one likes the stifling air of a totalitarian monarchy, or (c) since its the best shot at decking Ramsey in the shnozz for some impersonal slight or because he's very blatantly ignored the encroaching Grand Maritime Union through the Emporium and Sovereigns (very fair).
    To whine its because one wants to 'protect the freedom of the seas' however is just to choke on Flameheart propaganda that puts those types on the front lines to secure an even harsher rule than Pirate Derp Ramsey's.
    The Dark Brethren are the closest thing to fighting for what the Reapers claim to represent, except they're a bunch of jaded puppeteers who don't care about pirates so much as just making Ramsey and Flameheart stuff it. Honestly pirates have it good right now even with the trading companies, especially for reapers taking their loot without much resistance. Its when the GMU comes in full force that trading companies will truly be a problem.
