  • I was finally able to put together a DIY mosquito spray for the horses and I think we have an initial success so far. I plan on trying different mixtures as they come in and I can find the ingredients for it. This mixture came from a channel called Art and Bri: • Natural Fly Spray For ... So, check that out too.
    The ingredients for this are simple:
    2 cups of apple cider vinegar
    2 cups of water
    2 tablespoons of dishsoap and olive oil
    20 drops (1/3 teaspoon) each of lemongrass, tea tree, cedarwood and citronella essential oils.
    I didn't have the citronella on hand just yet so I'm trying it without it, so far so good. Once I get that ingredient in though, I'll add it and keep going and report back in! Hopefully this helps somebody out there and stay tuned for another part in the near future.

    Citronella is a well known mosquito repellent as it is used in candles for that purpose so it can only get better when you get that tomorrow. Tall phlox is name of pink flowers I think. They come in white, too. Very pretty!

      Thank you Kathy! Yes, I think it'll be that much better too. Looking forward to adding that last ingredient and then mixing up batches like these like a grandma after thanksgiving dinner makes turkey soup! hahaha... Tall phlox eh? Got it, I now know another plant name around here. Thanks!

    Good time to remind this recipe these days.
    Are you OK Graeme ? I read on French news that US and South Western Canada are going to face an exceptional dangerous heat wave... Sometimes reaching 40°C in BC ? I checked on Canadian press too. Take care for you humans, the horses.. Here each summer, we have it and it is increasing each year.. So far in June it's has been bareable with pics at ~30°C but we've had up to 40°C in some places, previous summers. It's horrible in cities. Death Valley record around 50°C they had 53 ! Some scientists have recorded 80 in some particular places of the Serano desert in Mexico, the hotest desert. No life can survive..
    June 27 : I read 33-43° C in Vancouver area. I hope all the trees refresh the air a bit. Your neighbour Saskatchewan 46.6°C.
    Same in US Oregon..
    And tonight they say :
    British Columbia 46.6°C
    Siberia 48°C🥵

    For soap that’s not being rinsed off, I’d go with a Castile soap type...seventh generation or Trader Joe’s natural dish washing soap...also, avoid citrus essential oils (like orange, lemon, etc) as they cause photosensitivity.
    I’m so happy you found a good recipe!

    • @StableHorseTraining

    • @kathybradbury
      @kathybradbury 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moreen Gauthier that’s a good question. Citronella is referenced in a lot of these recipes, but if it is a true citrus made from a fruit, I’d say that would apply. I’d look it up and find out tho-it could be extracted from leaves or some other plant part.

    • @SaltySherry
      @SaltySherry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I substituted glycerine for the soap. It’s good for skin and is used just like soap as an emulsifier to help the oils mix. It works great.

    • @sintara8442
      @sintara8442 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just get 100% glycerine, way nicer than soap! Citronella has nothing to do with citrus trees except for a simular smell

  • @pennywebb867

    So glad this is working. If it continues to work, you can get a multi gallon jug, mix up huge batch, have it ready to dip and fill your sprayer. I might be wrong but I thought with Lena you did not really spray right side of her neck and rub it on her right ear. Didn't get Luke's right ear also. Can't wait for updates. BTW, I have been using Skin So Soft since the 70's to ward off mosquitoes. This was before they had fancy mosquito repellent name for it. I don't know if it would be cheaper to buy the regular product, or if you even can. I haven't had to use it recently so haven't purchased any but chuckled when you showed your product. I thought, Avon sure did jump on that bandwagon... take good care of yourself and your beautiful daughter. Penny

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My sprayer is currently being used to kill off weeds.. I'd buy another but they're a bit costly! I might not have got all of her, I sort of rushed it but her whole body was pretty stinky after all that. Skin so soft is cost prohibitive as noted in this video how we just use it on ourselves as it doesn't require much compared to spraying a whole horse.. It works amazingly on us, highly recommended, wish it was cheaper though.. I'm sure Avon's prices have gone up since the 70's

    Hmmm, Vingear alone can emulsify oils if blended vigorously - that might negate the use of any soap if that becomes an issue.... Your kitchen blender might smell beautiful for a while...BTW, I believe the CO2 from our breath is a mosquitoes primary attractant - dark colours just provide contrast for their rudimentary eyes...Indigenous peoples used to weave head coverings of cedar boughs to keep bugs off, I do the same when wilderness canoeing and run out of Muskoil, it works really well...

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't putting soap in to emulsify though, it was to make the mixture a tiny bit thicker so it would "stick" a bit more. I think the oil helps with that as well. I need to do more homework on the essential oils though, always something to learn. As for the skeeters, that's my understanding too about what they are attracted to. There are a lot of traps out there that create co2 to draw them in and one guy said "why would I want to make a device that brings more?" as they seem to be able to detect co2 concentrations from 100 feet away... crazy. Anyways, so my idea is only to create deterrents and just keep them from coming around as much.

    Hi Graeme and Hailey, thank you for this interesting repellent cocktail👍 it sounds efficient with a lot of ingredients.. Citronella alone is quite efficient too but hated by dogs, with their fine sense of smell.
    Luke is the more sensitive with bugs. He looks great in his white shirt.. Yes, dark colors attract all the bugs.
    [I use cidar vinegar for many things. It has many virtues. In salad, lots of vitamins, antiseptic and also to clean objects, wood, metal, get rid of tartar (14 or 20%white vinegar does it even better) , but here I digress] ..😁 In the arctic they have clouds of mosquitos in the summer.🦟
    I hope situation improves for you very soon.. But you have a lot humid zones around...

    I know this is an old video about the goldfish in the pond, but have you thought about adding guppies to the pond? they’ll wolf down any mosquitos that land on the surface & the larvae, downside is though
    that they wouldn’t survive the winter.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious, if I have fish in there already that do the job, why would I buy more fish that will die?

    • @PennyLane66
      @PennyLane66 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Goldfish are more vegetarian so are unlikely to make much of a dent in the mosquito population whereas guppies are insectivores & do a much better job. I agree though that the short lifespan of the guppies is a drawback, sorry.
