How to Make a DIY Mosquito Trap That Actually Works!

- In this video I show you how I made a DIY mosquito trap that really works! Seeing the Dynatrap mosquito traps interested me in making my own but with a twist. New Jersey light traps work so well I wanted to incorporate it into this as well. I was skeptical as to whether or not making one of these would make a dent in my mosquito issue but after just a couple days of using it, I could see that over time this will definitely cutdown on the mosquito population around my house.

You don't necessarily need the insecticide. If the fan is constantly running the moving air will dehydrate the mosquitoes and they will die.
Good idea and good execution. You could control the size of the insects that get into the trap by placing more screening over the intake with holes that are the right size for the smaller bugs.
FYI: Menards green pails (cover not included) will develop a crack across the bottom after a short time, and that’s using them indoors. It’s a handy feature, especially if you were storing a liquid.
I made similar units powered by cheap little solar panels and DC fans and LED’s. No risk of electrocution, and I put them wherever needed without extension cables.
Led bulbs don’t generate much heat though, with mosquitoes it’s more heat and carbon and sweat that attracts them not light
I like that you surveyed the future residents of this home, making sure they were going to be comfortable with your caulking. Very thoughtful of you. 😉

You don't need a trap, just put out black buckets filled with water and a product called mosquito dunks, or DIY it with yeast, sugar and a few drops of dawn dish soap (any dish soap really). Far more effective, cheaper and easier to maintain. Mosquitos land on the water and the soap means no surface tension so they drown and so do their larvae.

I just moved to Kentucky and have my first experiences with mosquitos that are my responsibility. I did try reasoning and offering support to them to find a better residence but they are adamant that my house is where they want to live. So I guess I need to build them a condo to party in. Thanks for the build. I think I will do a version for my small residence.
Yes definitely make them a condo for their own! They enjoy mine so much that after they get done partying they all just take a nap. And it must be really comfortable because they just keep sleeping!

This has definitely been the worst year ever for mosquitoes in Kentucky,I wouldn’t put it past our government to drop off trillions of mosquitoes in every state to torment us!
I'm from Louisiana, living in Kentucky now, I just don't even notice the mosquitoes anymore up here 😂😂

I have a DynoTrap and it seems to catch mostly June bugs and moths. Thanks for the suggestion about the Atrakta. I'll try that.
Didn't check ALL the comments but you can minimize the non-biting insect deaths by just tossing the light bulb. Yes, it generates heat which might bring more biters in but while the CO2 and attractant is still potent, that will lure them in. Cool video!
I developed a product for a company years ago that invented a unit that would collect 5 gallon buckets of mosquitos and very few other bugs, using a heat technology, it worked on about an acre site.

I just happened to come across this in my TH-cam suggested videos feed and I'm glad I gave it a watch. The way you present this "how to" video is light-hearted yet very informative too. It was actually fun to watch (as opposed to 90-95% of how-to videos out there on YT). And I learned something about how to make a mosquito trap, in an easy-to-understand way. I hope the trap is still going strong and thank you again for sharing your do-it-yourself project with all of us! (PS. I'm in the South too! So I can totally relate on mosquitoes, yellow flies, and those annoying noseeums! Lol)
You took the words out of my mouth. This was my favorite mosquito trap video yet . I stayed interested the whole time and actually rewound it in a spot or 2 to make sure I was getting all the details. Love these kinds of videos where the DIYer actually USES the item and shows it’s effectiveness. So many people do a lengthy, boring video that ends with nothing to show if it works. That leaves me not wanting to make the items cuz I don’t feel like wasting time making something that might or might not work . I’m making this . Can’t wait! I actually Watch people make homemade lipstick and then they don’t even try it on to show how it looks. Super frustrating 🤣

This trap works as i made mine same as yours and used a 9 inch fan and same light fixture so i could just plug in fan. I am trying different lights as to see what works best as i also added a aquarium air line from a bottle of yeast,sugar, and water to add co2 as i am trying to save money from buying bait attractants. Thanks for great step by step instructions of how to make!
how does this work with the air line?
The yeast and sugar give off co2 as the sugar is converted to alcohol so a small air hose from the bottle to vent the co2 will attract mosquitoes

Where I am in BC Canada, all the mosquito trap lights are ultraviolet. The large bug traps one sees outside the doors of warehouses and other industrial areas are those yellow incandescent lights. Both seem to work very well. Both types of traps are also electrified to kill bugs on contact. I already have three smaller units of the UV/electric shock style light and they will attract all kinds of bugs, but mostly mosquitos and moths. I like your design as it is quite s bit bigger than the ones I have, some nice "off the cuff" engineering. I may try this build but I will use ultraviolet light plus I will also electrify the inner cage which does away with using a pesticide. Those "yellow flies" you speak of look like what we call "horseflies and Deer flies", those suckers really bite, taking out a small circular chunk of flesh when they do. One can sit on the balcony of an evening and listen the the bugs fry 😁

Ultraviolet light does not attracted the female mosquitos (that do the biting). They attracted by CO2, heat and movement.
Yeah I recognized those "yellow" flies, when I lived up north, we had some flies that were either the same thing , & called something else, or different species or "cousin" , and there were 3 distinct species, varying size & color, we called them Deer flies, 3- (three) cornered flies , and horse flies, as @tobygathergood mentioned ....
@@richardk7379 seems to me it's more about the heat they put off, so if choosing one or the other it makes sense to use ultraviolet which will give you the heat without the unneeded visible light.

FYI I have a flowtron bk15d and even full of bugs its has never caught fire. It does work and is water resistant but snow gets it quite upset so not for winter use. I mount mine lower around 4 feet off the ground and blow it out every few weeks with a portable leaf blower, they run about $30. I have one that is like 40 years old and still works fine, just had to put a new bulb in it after 20 years. One product I like and use near sitting areas is a Viatek Mini Mosquito Trap, They are good for flys and nats you put soap solution in the bottom tray and let it run all day and night, Its very quiet using a computer fan and LED lamps but its not water proof so I cover the top switch with tape and keep it under patio awnings. They run around $20 and I have some that are over 3 years old running almost constantly, The fan is a inexpensive part easily available if it goes bad. You can make your own using UV LEDs and a fan if you are handy.
When surveying the newer residents, have they requested any updates? Was laughing for the great delivery on that one.

Ive built something similar.I find a stinky sweaty old sock from the day hung in side the trap really brings the sqeeters in.Better than the baits/lures you buy at the store.
I am going to have to try that! I have heard of some people peeing on a stinky sock and swear that works too. 😂

@@phantomwalker8251 I'm not sure which wire you are referring to. It sounds like you are talking about the ground. If so, the bucket doesn't need to be attached to anything. The wiring is using the house wiring provided by the extension cord so it does have a return.
@@phantomwalker8251 I had originally planned on doing that but it wasnt allowing enough air flow and the fan was bogging down, so I had to go a different route, which is actually working quite well.
I like your prototype mosquito trap. The calking did not bothers me. A few questions about the trap:
1. Do you think spraying the screen with the insecticide countered the attractant you were using?
2. How often did you change that attractant?
3. Have you tried running your trap without the attractant?
4. Have you tried running the trap without the bulb?
4. What was the overall affect of the trap in your backyard?

Another youtuber had something you might want to try, it worked for me ;-) It is a CO2 generator. Use a 1/2 or 1 gallon jug, fill it 3/4 with water add a cup or 2 (respectively) of brown sugar and some brewers yeast. Get a length of aquarium air tube, and drill a hole in the jugs cap slightly smaller than the tube for a friction fit of the tube. the other end of the tube is secured at the trap. I did a week long test with plastic under a zapper ( no CO2), then another week long test with the CO2. The results were test 2 had an awesome increase in dead skeeters by 4-5 times

Yes. It was my understanding they are attached to CO2 not light.

I keep bugs and yellow jackets population down to nill by using water bottles. I cut the top off and flip it then using staples to secure it. Then using coat hanger wire as my hanger on 2 sides and then fill 2” of used antifreeze from my car as my bait. I also use the plastic tops from nuts or sunflower seeds or sour cream type lid for a hat so no rain water gets inside.
Make a youtube of making one of those. I cant stand yellow j's. Ugh

I have two of the DynaTraps they work great, not like a mosquito magnet but less cost, no propane and no issues like the mosquito magnets.

Great video. I'm going to build one of these for my deck. I'm thinking a "grow light" might be better since they produce full spectrum light. You'd also get the benefit of UV and perhaps make the trap a bit more efficient.

I live in the Philippines and premade commercial type of devices like this are not available at all. I am able to buy all the supplies necessary to build my own like you have done. I just think that maybe I will put fly trap "sticky paper" in the bottom bowl for quick cleaning. But anyway, thank you so much for sharing. Mosquitoes here are not only overly abundant, but pose a huge health concern due to malaria and dinghy fever.
In Scotland we have their viscious cousins called midges,they can drive a man utterly insane,we found a nice repellant called Avon."Skin so soft"it`s a ladies skin conditioner but the midges hate it,god i hate them,but at least they don`t carry malaria over here.
We use it in Minnesota USA, works on mosquitoes.
They have so many. Which one exactly?

I built one similar but had to go bigger. After 2 days I went to check up on it and found like 1000 mosquitoes 100 moths 3 Karens and 3 spiders!!! Excellent build!!!

Maybe adding some kind of louvers over the intake openings (Think air conditioning outlet for RV or mobile home), would accomplish two things. Keep the beetles out and keep rain water off the fan motor. I'm going to dry your design anyway.

Awesome. I think a fan with blades that fit into the bucket's walls (almost touching) would make this even more efficient. This fan due to the smaller size than the bucket's diameter causes the pushed-down air to circulate some of it back on, from the internal sides. In other words, you'll achieve a greater vacuum effect if the fan fits the diameter and less chance of mosquitos getting pushed out from the inlet. You can also modify it and turn these blades into a slightly higher angle because these are meant for simple circulation. Also a true UV bulb instead of full spectrum and a DIY CO2 releasing mechanism. It's gonna be perfect, you'll have almost only mosquitos in the trap.

what's a uv light? Is that a black light?
@@raincadeify UV light (the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum), divided into UVA (315-400 nm), UVB (280-315 nm), and UVC (100-280 nm) bands, spans the wavelength range of 100-400 nm.
Specifically 395 nm is what attracts them more. Blacklight has a wavelength between 400 and 315 nanometers. So basically yes.

I get beetles in my store bought one too. Mine has a double trap door. Sometimes I even get a lizard (anole) in there. I don’t use pesticide so I can free the anoles. I will buy and add the bait you recommended for Florida. Thank you.

Really good idea. Every night we have mosquitos moths and fish flies so bad on our front door, likely thousands. I will try this and will be really surprised if there aren't way more bugs than that every night.

Wonder with higher CFM fan, and larger trap area, how long this could run before overfilling...In addition to making an easily replaceable catch bag, so that there's less mess, and leave the screw off portion for when you really wish to clean it (or maybe line that lower grate, with paper towel? not sure which would work better)

You did an excellent job in building this trap, especially explaining exactly what you are doing. Did you get to talk to any of the mosquitos before they died to see if they liked the screen installation? U dun GOOD!
Not only attracted to co2, or skin scent but when I was out working on a friends car and changing a water pump, the mosquitoes were attracted to the antifreeze. I tested this later on when I was camping using a bug zapper and strips of cotton soaked with antifreeze. My bug zapper had a beard by morning. The frogs were happy to join the fry to.

First off.. GREAT JOB.. 1. Zip ties and washers could be used to secure the screen in the bottom or a crafting glue gun. 2. or zip ties and a piece of wire in the shape of a ring around the bottom might also work. The mosquitoes and bugs will die on the screen. you can feed them to the birds by shaking the screen out. (skip the bug spray) Like your build a lot. Great video. Thank you very much. : )

Great video. Great idea. I'm thinking of using a paper towel or thin restaurant napkin on the bottom - like a coffee filter - to quickly remove the bugs from the trap. Again, great video.

To avoid the poison, just put one of the electrified tennis racket looking cheap devices, cut off the handle, and place below the fan. I even just lay one of these rackets next to a bee hive and they are naturally attracted to the electricity, I assume. Great video, you are a talented speaker.

I really like this. The only things I would suggest is use Noseeum net (finer mesh) to get rid of the flying midges. They fly right through regular net but perhaps the poison would kill them anyway. The other might be to use the removed pieces of plastic but leave them attached at the top (bottom) of the trap but bend outward as a cover to keep water away from the fan. Could even use some of the other cut out plastic to fill in the sides a bit. I really love the reuse of all the parts, nothing is wasted!
how do you feel about putting a drop of dish liquid in standing water to break the surface tension, so when they try to land on to to lay eags, they fall in and drown ???

what do you mean you won't be needing that lid, that last 2 times I went shopping for 5 gallon buckets there was a lid shortage (no really) specifically I was making a pump / filter combo for my pond at the time. having moving water helped, but I still have a strong mosquito colony. Fingers crossed I can convince them to move a similarly designed condo next year!
In that case, I have a slightly used (due to throwing it) plastic lid for sale! $1000. No low ball offers. I now know what I have here! 😂

Yes and the ones I get at my house seem to almost be the size of an actual bird 😂. So far they haven’t been too bad but it’s about to ramp up with all the rain we are getting now.
Feel the same way here in gulf coast area Texas. It’s utterly ridiculous! And honestly the enormous growth in construction seems to have made it that much worse! I’m sure from a variety of factors…..

You can also take an old lamp bulb socket and disassemble that to fit a bucket. Chord being attached if you understand what I'm getting at here.

How do you replicate the CO2 generator the Dynatrap uses?
Would be interesting to see if this would work with an IR LED bulb for no visible light pollution. Not sure of mosquitos see IR but I know many other insects are attracted to it so might be something to test, could have the same results but no visible light and probably lower power consumption.

About the appearance of your skeeter trap, I bet it'll look just fine, from my house.
I've been using regular fans like the box fan in the background of your video.
I just wrap nylon window screen across the inlet side & put a pair of magnets on each side.
But I think I'll add some 'baits' to my traps.
I don't use poison so I can use the dead bugs as fertilizer.

I found the Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech this spring and decided to try them. It is a poison the skeeters drink then go off and die. I went out all hours of the day/night and checked, only to find that there were often NO skeeters hanging around them. When I looked in side nothing either for a month, then the solution started smelling like rotting fruit. And I started catching small wasps and a small black beetle known as "Rotten bugs" around here, they really like an open beer can while you are drinking from it ;-( In the meantime my "Mosquito Magnet (400 feet away) kept catching skeeters. So not impressed, but am reusing the bottles with apple cider vinegar to catch more rotten bugs and wasps.
You can spray rubbing alcohol and they will dehydrate to death! Then it evaporates away!
what fan speed did you find works best?
It might pay to cut a few little notches around the bottom rim (top in this case), of the bucket so that water will not collect in the little rimmed pool. This could eventually leak water into the electrics due to failed sealant.

And put the hooks a little on side near the top and and not directly in the top panel. Because there's sealant on the bolts, but not on the hooks... If there's no place to leak it will just go over the side once it's full of water...

What about when rain storm . How the fan then ? Does motor stay dry ? Do you have to replace the fan ? Light I can see would stay dry cause has cover over it.

Piretroids insecticides have also a repellant effect so I would not spray the insecticide on the bottom as it will be repelling some mosquitoes at least for a few days.
I'm curious if you think an IR light might be better at focusing on the blood suckers? A low energy layer light for example?
If you built one upside down, and with a narrower tube, you could probably use the heat from a candle to move airflow upwards towards a catch screen

I use my dynatrap indoors after seeing a green tree frog heading into the fan. I'm in Florida near a wetland and mosquitoes are so bad.

Any issues with the fan motor getting wet in the rain? The light seems well protected but that fan is pretty exposed.
So far so good! The motor is very much to the center so while it does get wet, it is pretty minimal.
