  • Hi again! It feels like spring is finally officially here, and I wanted to share a great homemade fly spray recipe you can make. What makes this recipe different is there is liquid sunscreen also in the spray, so it will help to protect your horse in the sun.
The ingredients you will need to make this spray are:
    2 cups Water
    1 cup Vinegar
2/3 cup sunscreen spray (I bought this one on Amazon) amzn.to/2I7VRIi
1/2 cup Fractionated coconut oil (I bought this one on Amazon)
    amzn.to/2KqE2CO
1 1/2 tablespoons Citronella essential oil
    amzn.to/2jkGtdz
1 1/2 tablespoons Lemongrass essential oil
    amzn.to/2HEqxSg
1 1/2 tablespoons Peppermint essential oil (my favorite!)
    amzn.to/2HIjqnP
    32 ounce spray bottle
2 tablespoons Liquid soap (I used Dr. Bronner's gentle castile soap)
    amzn.to/2r974hm
And then you mix everything together, shake it up and then fill the bottle the rest of the way up with water.
And you will have a fantastic fly spray for your horses! And you cal also make a spray for your horse's stall too by mixing water, vinegar, liquid soap and the essential oils.
You can always make a simple diy fly spray with water, a little bit of liquid soap and vinegar. But I have found by adding in the essential oils and fractionated coconut oil is what really makes a difference in making a better homemade fly spray.
And the best thing about this fly spray is there are no pesticides, so you won't be covering your horse in chemicals all summer long.

I've become an avid fan of adding essential oils to my fly spray. I have tried the vinegar ones before, with questionable results. The most successful spray I have come up with so far is a combo of: water, skin so soft oil, NEEM oil, some form of liquid soap (I've used both Dawn and Castile soap, and even a Neem based shampoo), Lemongrass EO, and Lavender. I have some Neem leaves ordered, which I will make a tea with that will be used as the base for my spray, instead of plain water, to which I will add some Neem EO, Aloe gel, Lemongrass, either Coconut oil or skin so soft, and some tea tree oil. The Neem is awesome for skin conditions and my goal is to not just keep the insects away, but, should some land and bite, fend off allergic welts and so forth.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! I just mixed this up. I already had most the products but did improvise a little with the essential oils. I used body spray I had, which is an oil. The flies have recently showed their ugly selves in abundance here in Southern California since it's warming up. I'm very tight on $ as I'm recently retired and even though my income is decent, I've been putting off buying fly spray as it is soooo expensive. (If you buy the good stuff that actually works. I tried the cheaper brand and it did little to nothing to keep the flies off my beautiful white and beige gelding.) Love the sunscreen being added to help protect him on the sunny summer days!!! I could not believe how great this mixture worked. When I went out to try out the spray, my horse was just covered in flies. I felt good about using as much as I needed as it's so inexpensive. Those flies were gone as soon as I sprayed him. I covered him good, walked away and did a few things, came back to see if the flies were coming back.... but NO!!! Not one fly in sight!!! You have done my horse and I a great service and I am very grateful!

Could you share where you get your essential oils? From what I have seen online, these essential oils are quite expensive. When I purchase store bought fly spray I end up paying almost $20. Knocking it down to under $2 would be great.

I use neem oil instead of coconut oil as it has insect repellent and healing properties.

Does this work for ticks too?

    • @BudgetEquestrian
      @BudgetEquestrian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Valerie 🙂 I know there are essential oils that repel ticks, I'm just not sure if the ones I used do. You could do a google search on essential oils to keep ticks away, and then you can add those oils to your fly spray.

Please be careful with the essential oil because i have owned horses who had an allergic reaction to some sorts or oils that i used for his legs

I have spent a lot on fly repellents and all the hype and marketing lies proved useless - they failed to work.
Ive made up sprays with various oils etc and also useless.
I always loathe the summer and cant wait for winter for peace from flies.A very effective and cheap fly catcher in the stable is to hang up the sticky fly strips - out of reach of your horse.
In hours the strips are full of flies - it does keep them down.
