  • Yugioh is a TCG Card Game, a Manga, and an Anime series about a kid who is really good at a card game called Duel Monsters. But Yu-gi-oh the anime actually has a hidden meaning behind it.
    In this video essay, I analyze Yugioh as I would any other film or TV series to try and uncover its deeper meaning and the themes hidden throughout its core series.
    00:00 Intro
    01:27 History of Yugioh
    02:33 Yugioh's HIdden Themes
    03:15 The Structure of a Duel
    04:48 Yugi vs Kaiba
    06:37 Yugi vs Pegasus

    Man, it’s kinda hard to believe that the franchise’s creator, Kazuki Takahashi, is dead. Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of my favorite franchises and he should never be forgotten. Thanks & awesome video.

    That point about the God cards is actually much deeper of a reading than I expected, very good point

    Great video, especially when you were describing the themes the God cards represent. Hadn't heard that before.. even all these years since it's aired.

    The thing I love about about kaiba and yugi what they represent the future being kaiba and yugi being the past and that they represent the good and the bad of both

    The music edit for this was really good

      Thanks, I try to keep it subtle but I try to lean on familiar music from the era of the film or show I'm reviewing if there's something that won't trigger a copyright strike.
      A lot of the music from this video comes from Jupiter Productions. Go check them out if you like the lofi vibe.

    Man I love your content, I’m sorry it doesn’t reach more people.
    Now for a fun fact, the concept of the shadow realm did not come from the Japanese version. 4kids accidentally created a cultural phenomenon with a dumb censoring trick

    • @MediaMattersChannel
      @MediaMattersChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did find that, in the Japanese version there's a lot more death. This censorship extends to the cards in the real world as well from names to art design.

      @@MediaMattersChannel I saw a comment (think I remember who, but don't want to say in case I'm wrong) that somebody preferred the Shadow Realm if only because it made things more believable than just resurrecting people like that.
      Speaking of which, I like the essay's points, but did you have to put quite so much of the butt picture in?

      @MediaMattersChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EthanKironus8067 yeah I agree on the shadow realm point. Adds some color to the show. And the “butt” clips are absolutely essential to the integrity of the video.

    Oh s$@#@ I LOVE the point about Slifer! I didn't think about it that way, but that IS the effect of the card! And it taps into the theme of heart of the cards, and it taps into the theme of friendships, it's a god card that is essentially at its core about YUGI.

    In case someone doesn't know, the reason there were 4 blue eyes was because Pegasus thought that if someone had all 3, which was his original plan, they would be too powerful. So he made a 4th one to challenge the power of the holder of 3 blue eyes

    What pisses me off the most is how they could have made the anime and manga realistic to the card game but they chose not to. Instead of just writing the story around cards that are out or cards that officially will come out (sort of teasing them) they make up bullshit rules and effects for honestly no real reason. So for example, Kaiba uses his Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon as a sacrifice for Obelisk The Tormentor and claims its because since Ultimate Dragon was fused using 3 monsters, it counts as 3 tributes which in real life is bogus. They didnt have to do that, they werent forced to write it that way, and yet they did for unknown reasons. It doesnt add more drama, you can easily write a dramatic duel with existing cards full of combos and synergy, but they just dont and that kills the anime for me. Another one is "anime only cards" basically cards they just threw together for story sake. Same argument, it adds nothing that couldnt be accomplished by real life cards at whatever time they were written. It doesnt add more drama, it doesnt increase the stakes or anything. All it does is make combos that cant be replicated in real life because those cards dont exist, and if they do, their effects were changed to balance them like the Golden Castle of Stromberg. The problem with the anime is it makes all of these choices when it doesnt have to and serves no purpose. People would watch the anime and think "Whoa, thats cool, ive never seen a combo like that. Ill have to try that in my next duel at locals." but they cant because of either fake rules or cards that dont exist. Its really sad because I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the game, and thats a shame that they decided to go this direction.

      The manga/anime leads the card game, not the other way around. The manga debuted in 1996 while the card game didn't come out until 1999, so it was impossible for the manga to be "realistic to the card game" until battle-city ish. And by that point, why would Takahashi-sensei forego a fun story moment just for the sake of product synergy with Konami? He was a mangaka, not a game designer.

      @@SquirrellyFries Im aware the manga came out first, I never said it didnt. And how is writing anything "impossible" when imagination is limitless. That makes no sense in the slightest. Let me break it down for you, since you need explaining. When you write something, you put your ideas on paper and if the guy had enough smarts to write rules for an entire card game and many other games that were included in the manga, then clearly he knows what he is doing. Is he a game designer? No, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to create a card game. And I didnt say "forego a fun story moment" I said you can have both a working game AND good story. Thousands of books and tales across history do it, the problem is this one chose not to. For example, look at the duel between Mako and Atem where Atem uses his Giant Soldier of Stone to attack and destroy his own moon spell card. None of that makes any sense from any point. If Atem can use a monster to attack a spell card, then why didnt Panik attack the Swords of Revealing Light that were holding up the castle? Do you see the problems here? Sacrificing consistency for wow moments is the same thing as just jingling keys in front of people to ooo and aaa them. It accomplishes nothing substantial or meaningful and boils down to just flashy lights and sounds for dramatic effect. Story telling can be both logical and exciting whether it has magic or just simple cardboard slips of paper. Saying its "impossible" is just limiting your imagination as a writer and honestly if people reach that point then they shouldnt waste their time pumping out sub-par works. The fact that you wrote all of this while ignoring my actual points proves you arnt looking at this logically or from a creative standpoint, so you should step back and let people who actually know what they are talking about into the discussion and go enjoy your flashing lights and funny sounds instead

      @@TheGGViking No need to be condescending. I said it was impossible for the manga to be faithful to the real card game UNTIL THE BATTLE CITY ARC, because until then the real card game didn't exist. That means the infamous "Attack the Moon" moment pre-dated the actual card game rules.
      Speaking of which, I laughed at your comment here: "if the guy had enough smarts to write rules for an entire card game and many other games that were included in the manga, then clearly he knows what he is doing." Because, like, no, he didn't, that's my point. Takahashi-sensei didn't write the rules for the card game. Until Konami made their real one, he was making up the rules as he went along depending on what made the cooler story. If you notice, every time the game is played in the early manga it is slightly different. Like a pokemon-esque type advantage system that was suddenly a thing in the game's second or third appearance. The entire duel with Mako should make it obvious that Takahashi-sensei really had no interest in crafting believable card game matches. His only rule was the Rule of Cool. Like any other shounen anime fight scene. Which is perfectly fine if that's what he wants to do.
      I'm sure the franchise post-original-series has sufficient interest in lining up the anime duels more with the real game, because money. But as Takahashi-sensei himself noted, a real card game is more exciting when the participants are evenly matched, while an anime/manga is more exciting if the villain seems overpowered and unbeatable. They're different, and serve different purposes.
