With Inkscape 1.2, at time 4:08 when you do Path > Stroke to Path it doesn't work, it does nothing. Thank you for the video. *FIX:* At the time of the video, instead of "Path > Stroke to Path" do "Path > Stroke to path" then "Ungroup" and "Path > Break Apart", now remove the pieces needed and go on with the tutorial. At the end when applying the "frost glass effect", adjust "Blur" and "Blend mode" to fine tune the effect.
Thank you so much. I learned to love inkscape because of you! btw. I pretty much can lipsync all your video starts with "view to custom" , "scale one by one" , "make sure to have last selected" and so on :D
Dude, you just dont understand the amount of joy i am experiencing right now. For years and years ive wanted to make my own unique graphics and if it wasnt for you having this tutorial on here i would be lost. I have my own website and i am in the process of redoing the entire layout and my handel is Ellawethey. ive just made my own liquid handle for my website. Thank you so much. you have gained a new subbie!
Inkscape's power is also its drawback. It is so powerful because a few tools together can do amazing things, but you have to get familiar with everything to understand what _can_ be done.
Loving your videos! I have been wanting to learn more about graphic design as a whole for ages now and this has helped me both with the technical skills and understanding some of the underlying concepts. I really love the way you teach, specifically how you show us the finished product and then work towards it from scratch without shortcuts. You explain what you're doing and why you're doing it with each step which is brilliant! Please keep up the awesome videos and content!
Thank you so much! I will be on this channel faithfully to learn the outlines tasks! I’m learning through reading, doing, and trying to write down the steps.
To anyone experiencing problems when applying the frosted glass filter, I had to enlarge the text by a HUGE amount before I achieved the same effect as nick was getting. I assume it is because I am using a much lower resolution monitor, so I was working with less pixels. It’s fine once you have enlarged the text.
@Nick Saporito - I've watched this tut twice now. Thank you for the clear tutorial. It inspired me to dust off some old skills and downlaod Inkscape. It's a great tut and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your channel.
You are so amazing Nick! amazing and great teaching skills too. I had small web development agency. I was struggling with Logo design issue but now your tutorial help me a lot. you make inkscape every easy to use even for the beginners. Thanks and keep it up the great work.
Power tip: at around 6:32 when adjusting the node handles, if you keep the 2 handles as parallel as possible then curve will look the most natural. Another great tutorial though, thanks Nick!
Whenever I get to the part where you go "stroke to path and then break apart" nothing happens and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Can you help in any way? I literally have done the exact same thing about 10 times and I get the same result, I cannot break it apart like you do.
The way I dealt with this was to before going to stroke to path, removing the fill so only the stroke is there. If you then go stroke to path and break apart, the result ends up the same (with a fill!)
You are great man. Keep it up! I like your explanations and I like you use an Open source software like Inkscape demonstrating that you dont need to pay to get amazing results.
I see you're using Ubuntu. Instead of trying to find things in Menu, you can press *Alt*. This will open a text box at the top left of your screen. It's called HUD (Head's Up Display). This allows you to search for items in the Menu.
When I used the "frosted glass" filter, my color variations are very different! I mean, in your case, on the edges its dark blue, and on inside its light blue, but in my case it looks totally opposite(not exactly)! What to do?
try "Filter>Filter Editor", in the floating window search the "effect parameter" tab and reduce the 1st value. (I'm from Mexico and don't write well in English)
Hello Nick! I cant reach same effect with frosted glass filter. It looks like regular blur. First I thought its 0.92 bug and downloaded 0.48.5 but same result. Have you any idea how to fix that? Thanks for the great vid anyway!

What can I do to make my vertical and horizontal axis connect together? last time i had to do it manually it came out ok but i don't want to have to keep doing it that way if i don't need to.
Really like these tutorials but like many who have come before me this one does not work for me. Path Stroke to Path does not work. Over and over again I have tried but can't make it work.
I'd like to see a liquid effect not as a glass port window into a tank/pool full of liquid but instead where the text itself is written atop a solid surface such as wood or stone (marble, soapstone, etc.) in dripped liquid such as water, virgin olive oil or honey/syrup. something like a puddle where you can see the light reflecting of surface behind the lettering distorted or displaced by the liquid. something that might have varied color or viscosity that would change how light reflects off it and shadows are cast from it. something found in Photoshop tutorials often but not so much in Gimp at least not with any high level of detail or artistic/technical production quality. I think I have a rough idea but the Photoshop versions incorporate features not found in GIMP AFAIK. I'm guessing it might look good in a thick cursive font.
Hey Nick, I can't seem to create that clearing between the letters when you're using "path" and "difference" around 5:03 . Thank you for your time and knowledge, Kev
At 4:09 my text is still thick. After stroking to path theres no contour of my text, filled with white space. It just stays the same, it stays blue. Can someone help me?

It could also be your monitor, I am using a slightly older laptop and the colour reproduction is very poor. Most things look very faint/light compared to everyone else?
Anyone figured out how to do the stroke to path > break apart thing? I tried stroke to path -> ungroup -> union but thats something different I guess :(

3 years on probably not gonna respond, but when i bring the blue layer down and stroke to path, nothing happens so basically stuck after that. nice green lettering though
I know i'm a bit late here but I'm working through it now and found this same issue! however i've worked out that if i bring the blue layer down (it already says it's a path) I just duplicated the green layer, centred it over the blue layer and did path>intersection and its given me the same result, not sure if thats totally correct as I'm just teaching myself this but yeah, thought i'd share in case you want to try again :)

In inkscape, when i import svgs i cant ungroup them no matter how i try, it wont let me do any of the path functions! pls help
Didn’t work / when putting blue layer back on top and dragging off / path stroke to path and path break apart didn’t do anything
Once again, top notch Nick!

Select the font design (text). Go to the very top menu and select Path > Object to Path. The portion of the font that was cut off should now appear.

Did you convert the text to paths before trying it?
yes, I held shift, clicked on the gap, path, difference and it didn't disappear.
thanks Nick i really appreciate the help
how can I achieve the frosted glass effect using illustrator?
When i break apart the text at 7:12, some of the holes in the font disappear, does anyone know a solution to this?
hello im trying to do this but for some reason my letter "y" is being cut off at the bottom, anyone know how to fix? Thanks.
Would anyone have a clue as to why inkspace would crash when i start deleting the letter sections (the step at 4:40)?
How much does Inkscape cost or it's free?

when i combine everything together in the end it all changes colors

My Inkscape makes all the colors i apply to objects very transparent and vague, even when opacity is set to 100%.

Under the Fill tab, go to the HSL tab, then go to the A row and make sure that slider is all the way to the right (255)

Is it possible to change dpi/ppi?
Yes, upon export. When you go to export a PNG you can set the DPI. Same when you save as PDF or EPS.
