It took an unacceptable amount of time and effort to tame the 8.1 Start Menu but if you were prepared to do it, setting up nice tiles for all your applications, I found Windows 8.1 was easily my favourite to date.
I used windows 8 for a long time and i just ignored completely the start screen. It changed so much the way i use windows that even today in windows 11 I barely use start menu aside from the rebbot/turn off options and search. Windows 8 is my favorite to this day because it was stable, light and it's the one that introduced blazing fast start up, windows defender (which was garbage at the time, but you have to start somewhere i guess), pre installed drivers and more.

Windows 8.1 is a way faster Windows 7. I would use it nowadays if not for AMD dropping its GPU support in 2018 for windows 8. Better SSD support and more modern overall.
I would like to see these with more simplistic UI settings. What slows Vista and 7 down a lot is the aeroglass, and when looking at an old, crappy PC, that might make a sizeable difference.
I still believe that XP, an OS released on 2001, can compete with the new versions of Windows... and that has to be appreciated! because it is still a very functional OS. Besides, as you said in the first part, there are many tuning in the OS for the new hardware, that XP may not have and it makes it looks slower.
XP was when the operating system and the machines on which they ran were fully capable of doing everything 99% of households wanted to do. Before XP it was not uncommon to throw away 3-year-old machines because they were hopelessly obsolete.

When saying Win XP can compete with the new versions of Windows, you need to also look at hardware features and optimizations they can use. windows xp does not support the new hardware features. Features such as Trusted-Platform-Module is only fully supported since Win 10 and partially since Win 8, Win 7. Additionally, win xp uses the legacy bios mode, and not UEFI. In short, if you want to use all of the hardware features available since 2020, you must have Win 10. This does not only apply for Windows but for Ubuntu (Linux) as well. To fully use the modern hardware features, you need at least Ubuntu 20.04.

It runs EXCELLENT with all of that modifications in an Elder 2012 Notebook, which i'll give you the specs: Model: Dell Inspiron N4050 CPU: i3-2350M 2.30GHz RAM: 4GB HDD: Hitachi 500GB 5400RPM. It is ready to use only 15 - 17 seconds after i turn on my PC. That's a pretty fast OS which i love from the botton of my ❤️.
i think 8.1 and 7 are the best and wish they were still supported on new hardware. i have 11th gen gaming pc and i already know 7 or 8.1 would do everything way faster and smoother than 10 or 11. 7 i feel by far still looks the best over all to this day
I think that Windows 8.1 is underrated, even tho it's not a downgrade from Win10 or 11, it's like an upgrade. You feel the full power of this Windows. It is so fast, and modern. I like Windows 8.1.

Everyone was mad about that even back then and downgraded to 7 at a results, which led to 8 and 8.1 being underrated, but 8.1 managed to get positively as time went on, even before it's out of support, it's wasn't a bad OS but the default UI ruined it unless you use Open Shell or StartIsBack. And for reason why 8.1 is better than 8 (or 8.0/RTM), is because they did have start button and with the 8.1 Update in 2014, they have added more feature to making Metro (aka pre-UWP) app to have titlebars and making the OS easier to use with modern full screen apps.
I still run Windows Vista Business SP2 x64 updated until today (yes, it still receives updates through Server 2008 ESU patches) and have found it to be consistently faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware with an SSD boost. Not that I don't like Win7 though
I think it would be nice also to show which edition of Windows it was. If it was Win 7 Pro/Ultimate etc.. Also in Windows 10 show/tell which version it was. If it's 20H2, or latest 1809 (which is still stable for eg. Enterprise release )

The key for me is how optimised the computers are for the operating system. The better optimised the computer the better the operating system works aside from preferences due to looks etc
I agree, after watching your last video I spent significant amount of time using win 8.1, win 10 and win 7. Each of them were my daily driver for atleast 1-2 months and I've stuck with win 8.1. It's fast, smooth, doesn't have as much bloatware as win10 and is can run a lot of software win 7 can't.

Windows 8.1 is nostalgic, I used to use this Operating System for like 2.5 years since 5 years I upgraded to Windows 10, some big speed changes I see, first: when I used to wake up pc in Windows 8.1 it's takes 1 second but now I guaranteed it takes at least 6 seconds in Windows 10, also opening settings, chrome and start menu definitely fast in Windows 8.1

As a long time Mac user I can enjoy this video from a totally different perspective (mostly laughter) but nonetheless a great follow up production to the first one you did last year. This helped me decide which OS to install to a 17" HP laptop from 2006 I got for just 10 bux. It came with XP and man, the thing is truly dreadful (speaking not only from a Mac point of view). After watching your video I've decided to try Windoze 7 on it. 10 didn't go well which is no surprise. This was a very useful video, I really enjoyed the editing and consistency. You truly did a great job and this in turn helped me decide to ditch XP. Cheers
exactly, windows 10 needs an extensive debloating via tools like NTlite so it can perform better, much better. 4GB RAM is not enough. At least 6GB is required. Windows 7 & 8.1 doesn't need such softwares but if we use, they are even better

@@pinroshan020 I don't know, man. With relative hardware I think I've had less crashes with Windows 7. From what I remember, XP was quite buggy at times.
My pc has windows 7 and only uses 888 to 901mb of ram when it is not processing. Just go to the services and turn off what is not useful, as the "themes" that spend approximately 200mb of ram, but this way only the classic themes remain. Classic themes = Arcade user. Besides that in comparison with the other windows, 7 is the one that presents less errors (although it still has them). I also have a dual booting to use Linux Budgie which I use more for work while 7 use it for playing.
This just reenforces why I think that windows 8 is a great lightweight os for something that isn't very powerful like an atom powered netbook (which ran awful on windows 7)

What is the difference in sounds between Windows XP and the rest? The startup sound! (Windows vista/7/8.1/10 all use the same startup sound[the windows 7 one xD])(windows 8 and 10 are disabled by default but can be enabled.)
Pro tip: for the battery life test, you don't actually have to let the battery drain to 0%. You can use battery bar to measure the amount of power the computer is using.

Good to see Windows 8.1 doing well on your tests overall. Still using it on an old 2014 laptop with a SSD drive which makes a heck of a difference.
Windows 8.1 is the best microsoft OS ever. Fastest when using SSD, has old settings like windows 7, more modern than 7. Compatibility like 7.
I had a 2015 laptop that runner windows 10 rtm but randomly it updated to windows 10 20h1 it won't install Windows 8.1 or run vms

I use win 8.1 on my pc with 12gb ram Core i5 and an SSD and I dualbooted this and win 10 and 8.1 was about 2 maybe three times faster in some aspects

Win 7 can't even install the latest graphics drivers for my laptop. Win 8 does it fine.

Just go to the services and turn off what is not useful, as the "themes" that spend approximately 200mb of ram, but this way only the classic themes remain.
Classic themes = Arcade user.
Besides that in comparison with the other windows, 7 is the one that presents less errors (although it still has them).
I also have a dual booting to use Linux Budgie which I use more for work while 7 use it for playing.
Windows 7 is the coolest till now with the end of support also

This just reenforces why I think that windows 8 is a great lightweight os for something that isn't very powerful like an atom powered netbook (which ran awful on windows 7)

Pro tip: for the battery life test, you don't actually have to let the battery drain to 0%. You can use battery bar to measure the amount of power the computer is using.
Software can never be a 100% accurate than hardware testing. It won't be fair at all if he did that.
