    When it comes to Microsoft and releasing software, its fairly easy to notice that they seem to have this period of a few years where (say for example 10 and 11) just feel like a beta release more than a public release, and it takes them years to actually get around to releasing the feature updates that finally patch out the bugs. initially I had hated 10, and it had already been broken right as I updated on Day 1 causing me to revert in an hour, but I've been using LTSC now for the last 5 years (which isn't really meant for the consumer) but it works for me how its intended, and gives you no bloat and as much of a 7/8.1 Experience as it can bring.

    Something about Windows nowadays, it’s something that people can tolerate upgrading to, rather than crave.
    Back then with Windows XP, when Vista was widely hated due to its high system requirements which made everyone stay back on XP. When Windows 7 came out, a lot of people craved to upgrading in my eyes including myself and hence, the OS was praised for (insert things Microsoft fixed).

    • @SunIsLost

      Yes.

    • @darkprinc979
      @darkprinc979 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I skipped over Vista entirely and didn't upgrade until Windows 7, because for me there was no real reason to upgrade. Windows XP continued to do what I wanted it to do just fine, but the RAM limitations of running a 32-bit OS is what ultimately pushed me into upgrading to 7. I downgraded to 10 because Microsoft decided it was time.

  • @YoukipsD
    @YoukipsD ปีที่แล้ว +48

    I agree. Windows XP and 7 was Microsoft's best designed operating system on desktop PC IMO. I still do not like the UI of Windows 8, 10, or even 11. Since they all try to accomodate both the desktop PC and tablet, which reflects in their poorly designed UI. Windows 7 had a lot more compact UI that was fit for a desktop PC and made sense in such environment. These days, I find modern Windows OS not intuitive enough to use and would rather use macOS instead.
    The problem though is, even Apple is going down the similar path in trying to merge the UI of the OS so that you get seamless transition from tablet to PC. This came at the cost of later version of macOS (especially after Big Sur) having more spaced out traffic light buttons which doesn't look good and feels like a waste of space when using desktop PC. Even their menubar looks worse now. But macOS's degradation isn't as horrible compared to the drastic change Windows had gone through, especially from windows 7 to windows 8/10/11. So overall to me at this point, it's about picking the lesser of two evils when it comes to using modern OS that's less well designed for desktop PC. And macOS for me is the preferred option.
    For gaming though, you obviously still need to use Windows OS, which brings up another irony. Windows 7 was considered by many to have been the best operating system for gaming. Since with windows 7, you were able to easily turn off windows desktop composition which lead to lower input lag for your mice. This is impossible to do with later version of windows. So the only good thing about newer version of windows is their hardware compatibility. But the input lag latency just doesn't match compared to windows 7.

    • @TrigrZolt
      @TrigrZolt  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting how you brought up macOS's because the transition looked so seamless (I don't use macOS, but I still try to stay up to date on what's going on) that I don't see many people go controversial mode like people did from Windows 7 to 8.1. Although some people don't like it when Apple plays it safe and being "late to the game", we can clearly see that the approach is causing them less problems.

    I’m still using Windows 8.1 on my pc from 2014 and it’s been solid ever since. I’ve barely run into any issues with programs not opening, except from the occasional crashing and long loading times that I fixed just by upgrading my ram and changing to an ssd. Other than that it’s been great for me ever since and one of the best OS’s that Microsoft has ever released. Windows 7 is still a better choice but windows 8.1 isn’t too far off. It’s definitely up there with Windows 7 for sure. I use Windows 10 on my Dell XPS 15 and I have no plans to update to Windows 11 whatsoever. Even though my device is compatible, I just feel it’s a huge downgrade from Windows 10 overall, I just don’t like it in general and will stay with Windows 10 till 2025 and maybe even further. Sure I’ll be at risk with security updates but would you rather have an OS that doesn’t function properly and completely makes your system feel unusable and slow with so many glitches or the previous version that feels like a solid rock maybe not as secure that performs as intended. I know what I’d rather want.
    I really feel Microsoft and all these other companies like Apple have kind of lost their touch when it comes to releasing solid and stable software on launch; instead of pushing out something that appears to be in beta and needs a ton of QOL updates to make it feel like what it should’ve been on day 1. 7:05 Considering also that recent rumours suggest that MS is moving back to a traditional three year release schedule for major Windows releases and the period between the two builds would be spanned by shipping features to the stable build of Win 11 22H2 through regular cumulative updates called „Moments“ (of which 2 already released)
    and the fact it‘s possible in the first place because they decoupled parts of the interface and components from the actual OS, so they can be modified independently w/o requiring a full build upgrade
    I see it as a much much needed improvement to previous update servicing scheme

    As someone who did IT support in the Windows Vista/7 era, I frankly do not miss that OS from a sysadmin perspective. Yes, 7 fixed a ton of issues with Vista and was a solid user experience, but it was still an iteration of Vista under the hood. Everything from installing updates/apps, driver issues, even doing netboot deployments was like pulling teeth when things didn't work. Times that by 50 workstations in an office and my frustration only grew. Windows 8/10 had a ton of nice under-the-hood improvements that made it much easier to deploy, maintain and is more widely supported on newer machines.
    I find it pretty ironic how the later versions of Windows improved in functionality but regressed in the overall user experience department. Although my belief is that an OS is an utilitarian tool that shouldn't be bloated with flashy UIs and unnecessary software to begin with, I can acknowledge that Aero is still gorgeous looking. Aero was also known for consuming a ton of resources to run, especially on older hardware of the time, and I've always seen it as unnecessary bloat. That's why I rmuch prefer the minimalist design of Windows 10 and recent MacOS revisions. Less distractions, less bloat.
    The only reason Microsoft keeps including the legacy versions of said apps is for backwards compatibility reasons. Since a lot of their corporate clients spent millions on making hand-coded software using Microsoft's garbage proprietary solutions, Microsoft essentially painted themselves into a corner when those corporate clients couldn't realistically replace those software solutions when support ended. That's why Windows still has remnants of Windows NT deep in the kernel, and also a ton of baked-in legacy apps that nobody else realistically uses anymore. It's for those megacorp clients who have no choice but to keep relying on deprecated software. Apparently Windows 11 is a departure from all this, their first attempt to re-make Windows from scratch, which is why it seems like that OS has taken several steps back in functionality and usability.

    • @franci2a
      @franci2a ปีที่แล้ว +1

      (The legacy apps can at least be updated in a basic level without breaking any compatibility whatsoever. E.g.: a really finished msstyle, dark mode (optional), new icons, at least Segoe UI in dialogs. All of those things which are just resource changes are all absent in 11, yet are the easiest things to do.)

      A common misconception is that Windows 8 and later versions have a faster UI compared to Vista/7's Aero, but in reality, it relies on the same dwm.exe component introduced with Aero. One of the benefits of Aero was that it offloaded UI rendering onto the GPU which freed up CPU time, so this actually isn't bad at all. The difference is that Windows 7/Vista would only enable Aero if your graphics hardware was sufficient. With the removal of Classic theme in versions after 7, there is no way to revert to running the UI without dwm.exe without extensive modification. On the flip side, graphics hardware is much improved than it was in 2009, but it is still an unfortunate removal.

    Around 2017/18 I had to get a new laptop due to my older one just kicking the bucket, got a cheap HP one, came with windows 10, tried to install windows 7 because 82mb of vram is not the best thing ever on windows 10, it just wasn't compatible with my hardware, in 2017/18, as an alternative I been runing Linux Mint on a dual boot alongside windows 10 to get used to it because I knew that w10 just wasn't gonna get any lighter and I'll had to keep using this machine for a few too many years.
    2020 comes around, I don't know what did microsoft break but w10 would just break/insta freeze with a weird screen tearing, my old install broke, if I tried to install it again with a fresh drive it would do the same and just die after boot leaving my laptop frozen and the screen weird, running it in a vm would also crash my system, they did fixed it like a year later, but by that point I had been using linux for a while, tried to go back but I was still using a 1tb hdd, it ran everything just fine, never had many issues, W7 and 8.1 would run pretty good with not a lot of "slowness", just like in Linux, but windows 10, that thing dragged my hdd through the dirt like a little bitch, I was so bad it corrupted its own install, it was probably the windows antivirus which was using 100% of cpu and disk, but that alongside locking me out for ours for "safety" because I rebooted "way too much".
    I dream for the Windows 7 source code to get one day leaked so we get somewhat opensource W7 systems, hell, I'll take Vista, I loved that ui, but fuck, my pc that came with w10 just can't handle it, not a bit.

    I'm not screaming "LINUX IS BETTER" or "WINDOWS SUCKS" like other Linux users, but hey, why not try using Linux for a week just for a change? I tried this and here I am, recommending people all around me to daily drive Linux. I know, Windows has it's own perks, butthe only gripes I felt on Linux were lack of native support for Office and some gaming, and yeah, I did try WINE (Windows compatibility layer for Linux) and it worked fine. I used Linux Mint Cinnamon and themed it to look like Windows XP, and also downloaded 3D Pinball and played it using WINE. Just try Linux, I don't mean Mint specifically, but Mint is great, especially if you want to theme it like any other OS, say Windows 7. It also has great stability. I kinda feel sad as now I must stick to WIndows as for some weird reason my old PCs HDD is about to die and it doens't allow me to install Linux... Give it a shot bro. You could even make a series on it like "Windows user tries Linux for a week". Just saying, ignore if you seriously rely on some other feature Windows has.

      While it is actually possible to do this with Windows 8(&8.1) (to the point it looks completely identical and yet, still native), Windows 10 removed a ton of stuff from their classic apps, replacing it with UWP apps like Settings, Photos, Taskbar and its fly outs like sound and network (which are all based off UWP now). There are also thousands of 3rd party UWP apps. The thing with UWP is that there’s no way you can customise it without breaking it.

The actual creation process of the ui is also horrible, i make sometimes programs for my use, and from what i know uwp, maui apps etc they all don't fu** have a civilized drag & drop option, there's no visual editor where you simply can drop the widgets rather you have to code it, specify the height and the posiution and than see in preview how it looks which is horrible considering that in a visual editor you just drop the widget where you want and that's it, it much resembles a more clunky html, it's truly weird... This was at least for c#, but i assume other languages have same problem, luckily still you can make normal cross-platform apps in freamworks like qt or so, it was a damn weird thing what they did, it's like buying a car with no seats inside...

    windows 7 is still my favorite OS by far.
    it was cleaner and more accessible in every way i needed it to be.
    its a literal benchmark for when corporate strategy shifted into the pump and dump meta.
    like what happened at blizzard and the hijacking of legacy media and technofascist social media companies like old twitter and facebook, you can trace the actual beginnings of the neoauthoritarianism to the inept and malicious practices of large companies and their products, like microsoft with windows.
    they are giving you what they want, not what you want. and windows 7 was the last vestiges of consumer driven marketing.
    they want you to take what they give you and not ask questions or scrutinize whatsoever. they literally censor dissent. thats the hallmark of a coordinated effort between money and power structures.
    hollywood, video game industry, all social media, all legacy media, and of course the institutions like schools and universities, eventually sprouting into congress itself, and all the way up the line.
    the 'new normal' is something to be opposed.
    we need to ensure that these companies who are making products for consumers get back to tailoring their products and direction to consumers, and not to shareholders and elite interests, and certainly not to a govt sponsored deranged cult of neofascist extremist liars.
    im not naive, i understand how the world works. i also understand it starts by making a stand. this got this bad bc everyone sat quietly and did not raise a fuss. bc they were scared bc they saw what happens to anyone who did, the mob attacks and villifies them.
    well the mob has been wrong about everything. covid tyranny and all the lying and censorship and authoritariansim the left has platformed are the face of the beast, we've been smelling its stench and feeling its stare up until now.

    For anyone who wonders why he doesn't use Linux cause it lacks software. Yes you can install wine but it's extra work. Plus he has programs which don't support wine.

    In some ways I wish I was still using 7 as my primary OS, simply because I despise the direction that Microsoft is going in. They are way too controlling over what the user can do with their system and getting worse by the day, not to mention the massive amounts of telemetry Windows 10 gathers. Frankly speaking, I don't find Windows 10 to be more secure than Windows 7 because I don't see Microsoft as any more trustworthy than some random hacker. Sure, maybe Microsoft won't start making fraudulent charges to your bank account but they are still selling your private data to whomever their partners are. I also despise this forced internet integration Microsoft is pushing. I passed on getting certain games I was looking at because of shenanigans like this and I'm definitely not interested for my operating system. I absolutely do *not* like the idea that Microsoft can just flip a switch and shut me out of my system because they don't like the opinions I'm pushing on the internet or simply because they had some systems failure. The future that Microsoft and other big tech companies are pushing is *not* secure for you and me, it is secure for *them* because they intend to have all of the control.

      yea, i said straight to them that they are treating customers like re***s, like if you have some down syndrome and they have to control you.... gtfo, i don't needs windows help, i got win 11 and 8.1 with 7 as secondary systems, and both on 8.1 and 11 i had to disable all the abusive despotic sh*t that suspects everything of being a threat or virus...

      @@WololoWololo2 Nah, I've switched primarily over to Linux at this point. Linux Mint was actually fairly easy to get into coming from Windows. The main limitations that I'm finding in this regard are that there are some games that rely on third-party software that just won't work on Linux, and Bluray playback can be pretty hit and miss since the decryption method required to play them is licensed from Sony and therefore can't be placed into video players willy nilly.
      Besides, Windows 7 ESU has also been over and done with for a while now, so if security were my main concern even that wouldn't be good enough.

    To be fair, I don't even play games that require windows 10 and above.
    When new games do come out and for support of Windows 10, I just play it on my Xbox Series S. It plays 120 FPS and don't have to worry about upgrading in the future.

    Agree with the points on annoying updates and crashes. The bloatware. Other than that otherpoints is bit picky as you mentioned yourself. I like Windows 10 UI and speed. Its not perfect but its good. The question now is tho do you still use Windows 7? You havent mentioned that lol.

      You still use it by... installing it. Make sure the hardware is compatible (intel integrated graphics have to be pre gen 7, newer gpus wont support it, newer cpus wont (officially) let you update, etc.) and youll be fine. I installed it on my laptop from 2018 and its perfect.
