    So, about the 'real names' thing. Doctor and Master are not their true names, of course. Time Lords take on a new name when they get their abilities which is intended to be a kind of description of what they're going to be. As for what the Doctor's real name is? We, the fans, have no idea, as Time Lords generally don't give them out to anybody who isn't a close personal loved one. That's why 10th was so stunned when River Song whispered his in his ear back in the library because that was all the proof he needed she was someone he clearly trusted completely in the future. There's also a certainty that the Master and the Doctor know each other's names because they grew up together. I think the reason he keeps asking her/him/whatever to use Master is because it drives the point in that he isn't who used to be anymore.

    • @seamusburke639
      @seamusburke639 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could be wrong, but I thought the implication was that if a Time Lord abandons Gallifrey, they have to "forsake" their name and take on a title. The Doctor, The Master, The Rani, The Corsair, all general descriptions of what this Time Lord is all about.

    • @johnmathewson6630
      @johnmathewson6630 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I always looked at it in a completely different way. The Doctor has always been his actual name this entire time. Same with The Master. It's suggested a couple times that the term "doctor" came from him helping people. This would suggest that the term "master" comes from The Master taking over civilizations and subjugating them. I don't know if I explained what I was thinking very clearly, but that's how I always viewed it. Doctor was only a name (without the meaning with which we now associate it), and The Doctor helping people is what made "doctor" mean what it does now. Just like the line, "...The Doctor. The original, you might say."
      That being said, it doesn't matter all that much, as the show will NEVER say what his "real name" is. That's like hyping up a joke, saying it's going to be hilarious. It has to be the funniest joke ever told, or else it just won't be funny. There is no name they could conceivably say is The Doctor's real name that won't seem disappointing in some way.

    In my opinion, because Missy met a previous incarnation & getting “killed” - it erased her memory of the event. So from her POV - she travelled with the Doctor, was abandoned & regenerated. So it makes sense why he would be mad - of course then he goes to Gallifrey and finds out the Timeless Child stuff and that’s what really hits them off.

    • @serenity4eva89
      @serenity4eva89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agreed. Missy went through quite a lot in the lead up to being "killed" by a previous version of herself. And new regenerations (both, the Doctor and Master), even though there is a constant throughline, are always a reaction to what came before. What does seeking redemption become when you find out you have been lied to about everything you thought you were and knew? The answer is... this version of the Master.

      @@atryon7 Yeah, the "memory trick" they use to avoid the problem of foreknowledge when Doctors meet only applies to the past Doctor(s) so the same should hold for the Master. Missy was the "present" Master so she'd remember. There're plenty of ways to explain the re-evilled Master but that's not one IMO.

    • @cait812

      Missy would have remembered the same way eleven remembered DOTD as the oldest incarnation there. The others would forget until they lived that moment. And it's already explained why they changed back to being evil, the timeless child stuff broke them and made them snap again.

  • @jpwphoenix1701

    I totally get your confusion about Gallifrey and where/when it is. I think it's in a separate bubble reality at the end of the universe, which is how it was described the last time we were there (during Capaldi's time). It was hinted that Clara and Me/Ashildr could always go back there in their TARDIS, as Clara's life is held in place by it (after the 12th Doctor extracted her from the time of her death). It's not known if the damage done to Gallifrey has impacted on this or not. But obviously the Doctor is able to punch through to the bubble reality in this episode (we see a graphical change in the time-vortex when she does this). I think it's easier to get to this way than it was when it was "time-locked" during the RTD era and they were stuck at the end of the Time War. It was repeatedly stated back then that no-one could get through to it, even though Dalek Caan managed to in Season 4 (costing his sanity and casing).

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In fact the last time we were on Gallifrey (in 'Hell Bent') 12 explicitly says:
      CLARA: I thought you said Gallifrey was frozen in another dimension?
      DOCTOR: Well, they must have unfrozen it and come back.
      CLARA: How?
      DOCTOR: I didn't ask. It would make them feel clever.
      Elsewhere in the episode the General says "Gallifrey is currently positioned at the extreme end of the time continuum, for its own protection. We're at the end of the universe, give or take a star system." (no mention of bubble universes). 12 does say _Ashildr_ has created a reality bubble (to view the end of the universe from) but that's not the bubble Gallifrey was in. So if Gallifrey actually _is_ in a bubble universe when the Master/13 go there and see it destroyed then that's either a time before the events of [ETA: swap 'Day of...' for] 'Hell Bent' or yet to be explained (or maybe just a plot-hole/mistake).

    I think it's ok if this Master is after Missy. Personalities can change between regenerations. Besides, the ending of Doctor Falls is made more tragic if her redemption was unseen and undone: Missy represents the glimmer of goodness that the Doctor hoped to be inside, but (s)he can never be 100% sure.

      @@archus9788 The Master and their life has always been somewhat a mystery. There are many holes in his/her story, many unexplained things about him/her and their life. So Master's new regeneration appearing without any context or premise has been done before and is unexplained thus far(people still make theories about certain Master's regenerations). Meaning the writers can fully avoid the narrative logic, leaving the Master a mystery-to-be, just like he was since his first appearance ir Doctor Who.
      P.S. Also(just like the Doctor), it's THE MASTER we're talking about! Of course he's alive, how can't he be?

    Answering the crew's questions,
    1.) The Time War is "time locked" meaning nobody can enter or exit it (unless the story comes up with a loophole such as with Rassilon trying to escape in 'The End of Time' or the Moment bringing the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor into it in 'The Day of the Doctor'). And I am not certain but I think that Gallifrey's past was included within that time lock (if there even is a past considering it's a *Time* War). The details around how the Doctor saves Gallifrey are vague but the result is Gallifrey being moved to a bubble universe. The Doctor still did not know how to get to Gallifrey though so it remained lost to him in that sense until 'Heaven Sent'/'Hell Bent' where he is brought there by the Time Lords (specifically an incarnation of Rassilon after Timothy Dalton). Since then, he has known Gallifrey's location and presumably chosen to not return (given how negatively things went for him in 'Hell Bent') until this point where the Master gives the Doctor a reason to check back (only to find out that the Master has destroyed everything etc., you know the rest). So in terms of what that means now, the Doctor can theoretically visit Gallifrey at any point in its timeline after it was moved to the bubble universe. But obviously, if she were to visit a still alive Gallifrey (any time between it entering the bubble universe and the Master destroying it), she would have to be mindful to not create any paradoxes.
    2.) John Simm's Master in 'The End of Time' set the DNA altering device to turn humans into himself. That's why other species weren't affected (e.g. the Doctor, the Vinvocci scientists and every other Earth-based animal). Donna wasn't affected because the Doctor put some kind of protective mental blocker on her when he erased her memory, and Wilf wasn't affected because he was inside the radiation chamber when the DNA altering device was used. Therefore, Sacha Dawan's Master wouldn't have turned into John Simm's Master although he may well have interacted with himself (not that he'd remember doing so).
    3.) The bootstrap paradox situation isn't quite the same problem as in 'The Flash'. Whenever the Flash learns a new, powerful ability, it raises the question of why he doesn't use that a lot more than he does. In 'Doctor Who's case, the Doctor isn't in control of when a bootstrap paradox occurs (by definition of a bootstrap paradox, it has no creator), however, it is something that a writer should use sparingly as it's basically a cheap get out of jail free card.

    This two part premeire was ok imo .
    The Kassavin-Barton stuff is definitely pushed to the side in favor of the Master which I was ok with personally since the Doctor-Master interactions are my favorite part of the episode .
    It was cool to learn about historical figures such as Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan and while the actresses do well , we sadly don’t get enough time to flesh them out due to the nature of the story.
    The Ryan, Graham and Yaz stuff is fine ..the laser shoes thing is silly fun but I did like them acknowledging that they really don’t know anything about The Doctor even though they have travelled with her for awhile .
    Sacha Dhawan as The Master is the highlight of this premiere imo ..so chaotic , hot tempered & insane on the surface but deep down , a more damaged and fatalistic version of the character then before !!.

    Gallifrey after Day of the Doctor was put into a bubble universe. During the events of Heaven Sent/Hell Bent, the Timelords got out of the bubble universe, by their own methods, & came back into the main universe, just at the tail-end of everything so that no one would notice their return.

    The idea is that time is a long string from the first second to the last, all in existence. It's all straight and knotted, until a time machine comes along. Loops and crossed timelines, and pocket time strings... it becomes a giant knotted, jumbled mess. Time machines have their own time separate from the rest of the universe, so they too have their own time-strings that weave in and out of the main path. Then there is relativity, which throws a nice big monkey wrench in the whole thing. Really, time is more of a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff

Back when this episode aired in January, people were really pissed because Doctor Who is usually really good about not going back on established events. • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, "big issue in the continuity" ? By this point bootstrap paradoxes had appeared often in nuWho, especially in Moffat's era, for whom it was almost a calling card (hell, 'The Day of the Doctor' is entirely predicated on the Doctor going back and changing their timeline). Does it make the idea of peril on the show problematic ? Absolutely. But that already happened in e.g. 2010's "The Big Bang", when 11 got himself out of the Pandorica because... 11 had got himself out of the Pandorica (it was a _literal_ Bill and Ted's situation - "Having escaped, i'll go back and give Rory the sonic so I can escape" - and personally I loved it). Or maybe most explicitly in 2015's "Before the Flood", when 12 not only goes back into his own timeline but even directly tells the viewing audience that the events form a bootstrap paradox ! So yeah, Eric is right. But he's been right for a decade at least. Not sure why this particular instance is such a big deal (beyond it being fairly explicit, so that maybe more viewers actually noticed the "problem").

    • @johnmathewson6630
      @johnmathewson6630 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@anonymes2884 This is not a bootstrap paradox! Reading this comment section makes me realize how little people comprehend when they watch things. Let's use "Before the Flood" and its second part as an example. This was a Capaldi and Clara episode. So. The bootstrap paradox in that episode is when the doctor goes back in time to before the flood, after which, his ghost appears, but it is saying something different from what the other ghosts are saying. So, the Doctor thinks he is going to die. Instead, he programs a hologram to act as the ghost that Clara sees, making it say the same words. Who had the original thought? Who composed Beethoven's 5th? He does something BECAUSE he saw that thing in the future. Now let's look at what happens in this episode. The Doctor sees that her friends died because she forgot to save them. Seeing them dead is what prompts her to go back in time and tell them to remind her to save them. So now, the doctor will save them, thus the doctor will not see them dead later, which will not prompt her to go back and tell them to remind her to save them. So. Paradox, but not a bootstrap paradox. Going back in time to save them will prevent the series of events that prompted her to go back in time and save them, whereas, in a bootstrap paradox, you are going back in time to set in motion the series of events that prompted you to go back in time.

    • @johnmathewson6630
      @johnmathewson6630 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mr.scarlo2234 Not bootstrap. Because the Doctor went back and changed the series of events that led to her going back, she prevented herself from experiencing the series of events that led to her going back in time to save them. The regenerated Missy, inspired by the Doctor, went out to do good in the universe and abandoned her previous identity as the Master to go as the Lumiat. The Lumiat would foil several of Missy's schemes, causing Missy to believe the Lumiat was the Doctor. After revealing her identity, the Lumiat accompanied Missy on some trips, trying to act as a good influence on her. She also stole Missy's Tissue Compression Eliminator. However, she was mortally wounded by Missy after she grew bored of her, and was forced to regenerate, with Missy speculating that the next incarnation would not share the Lumiat's good nature. She subsequently dumped her on a random planet, where she completed her regeneration into the spy master

      Well, genius, plots in a serial IS canon, dear. There has been terrible writing and absolutely no character development whatsoever. Chibnall is not fit to retcon Doctor Who. thegentleassassin Exactly! The pathetic man-baby 'nerds' who have no life whatsoever really bring down the fan base of this show and actually stop some people from watching it altogether. They have a go at anyone who has a different opinion to them and says they have no argument because they've only just started it whereas the 'boomer' has been watching it for years like that is some kind of justification. The classic fans are so stuck up their own arse and blinded by their ancient prejudicial views it's insane. This fandom is honestly worse than Star Wars and that is saying something. Like seriously, who TF actually cares about canon? It doesn't matter one bit as long as the show is fun and entertaining which it is. Doctor Who has always retconned and changed/added lore and cannon ever since it started anyway so no idea why they are crying so much... Oh wait, it's because there is a female doctor.

      @GamingWithChu Unfortunately, as Davis put-it, fan-theories don't substitute writing.
      Chris Chibnall took-over a franchise that has over 55 years of lore now; A task he clearly wasn't ready to take-on.
      Steven Moffat gave-us a, in my personal opinion, Perfect ending to The Master as we knew him/her.
      When Chris Chibnall brought The Master back, he had 3 options:
      #1 (The easiest, and most desirable one): The Master is a past-incarnation, from before Missy.
      This could have been implied when in The Timeless Children, he claimed he: 'Had No Better-Nature.'
      Unfortunately, this doesn't work-out, as Surly The Doctor would have replied with something like:
      'Hush you; I'm talking to Missy.'
      Option #2: Explain-away Missy's death.
      Option #3: Just ignore it, and tick off all the Missy and Master fans out there.

    The thing about time paradoxs is that there is another version of reality. Because the doctor forgot to save her friends there is an alternative reality where she goes to the present and sees her friends dead then remembers to save them. Now that they are saved, they can complete the loop by reminding the doctor to save them.

    • @johnmathewson6630
      @johnmathewson6630 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not how paradoxes work. That's just how bad writing works. Inconsistent with all established Doctor Who lore on the subject. At the very least, there have to be repercussions. You can't get people killed, see them dying or dead (establishing you in that timeline), then go back in time and change the outcome. With that logic, Capaldi could have traveled back in time and told Clara not to exchange the death sentence that killed her. Or, the Doctor could have gone back in time, told himself not to go to the pandorica and prevented the cracks in the universe.

    • @johnmathewson6630
      @johnmathewson6630 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only reason they reminded The Doctor to save them is because The Doctor saw them dead and went back to tell them to remind her. That is a textbook paradox and terrible writing. Additionally, it has ALREADY been established that you can't just pop into another version of reality, so that has no weight here.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I disagree with 99% of what you have said over the years, but...I agree with that. It seemed like Moffat was just working his way through the things from the RTD era he could ruin. Culminating with his entire Time War storyline. Between that crack storyline erasing whole swaths of events from the RTD era (like the entirety of the Series 4 finale), down to the events of The Next Doctor (which, to be fair, RTD pretty much wrote to be changed anyway, but if you give Moffat an inch, he takes a mile), to completely ruining the end of the Time War, it was just a mess, and it still angers me.
      As much as I love the acting performances of David Tennant, Matt Smith and John Hurt, not to mention the others, the episode is still a slap in the face to one of the greatest threads that was woven through Doctor Who from the moment it returned, not to mention a huge fuck you to Paul McGann, who has been faithfully playing the Eighth Doctor for 20 years with Big Finish, which Moffat himself recognized as canon. (Not that his approval was needed, as the BBC itself recognized the audios as canon years before Moffat did, but still.) Not only did "Night of the Doctor" completely rip apart 20 years of character development of the Eighth Doctor, and the work Big Finish's producers had done to prepare Eight to be the one that would be willing to fight the Time War even if it gnawed at his conscience, (here's a hint: When it comes to the Daleks, he certainly wouldn't be willing to commit suicide to avoid a war with them. Quite the opposite, after all they've done to people he loves.) but they gave the final act to a completely made up Doctor that didn't even NEED to be there because Paul McGann TOLD them he was totally up for being in the 50th Anniversary.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HOWEVER... I don't like Chibnall's tinkering with the entire existence of the Time Lords, basically ripping Rassilon's part in the development of the species out to replace his own bullshit that makes the Doctor into some godlike being. (Mind you, I hated when the Virgin novel twats tried to do it, too. Thank goodness the BBC rightly yanked Virgin's license.) (And don't worry about spoilers. They never read the TH-cam comments, only the Patreon comments.) Chibnall could have just had the Master destroy Gallifrey in a fit of rage over what Rassilon did to him and left the rest of that bullshit out of it.

    • @Zomdra
      @Zomdra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eh, as much as I disliked the saving Gallifrey retcon in Day of the Doctor I don't feel like just destroying it again in a different way fixes the problem. The main issue with the retcon was that it made out that the Doctor killing the Time Lords and Daleks to save the universe was morally wrong, even though _they would've died along with the whole universe anyway if the Doctor didn't kill them_ . Gallifrey being restored in and of itself was never entirely the problem, it was how damaging the way Moffat brought it back was to the concept of morality itself; making out that if you're faced with a difficult moral choice where you have to choose the lesser of two evils...you shouldn't, you should just pull some BS third choice out of your arse that means no one gets hurt and everything's sunshine and rainbows *blegh* .
