      I think the reason the new doctor became a woman is cause most of the real strong characters are women, take the mars queen she wanted bill"s intake on what to do and not the doctors' and when clara did what she did to save her doctor. or when martha went around the world to help the doctor, or rose being rose and turning into the bad wolf to save the doctor. and yeah donna how she helped the doctor not become someone he would hate to be, and donna saving the doctor again.

    Farewell Twelve. Some criticized 'Twice Upon a Time' for being too indulgent, or “for having no plot”, but all it’s meant to be is a coda; a short reflection on change, death and the nature of memory, and as that, it works perfectly. Together with 'World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls', these last three episodes were the best farewell for a Doctor yet, and a fitting one for a phenomenal Doctor. For me, Peter Capaldi's very flawed and insecure, yet kind and wise Twelfth Doctor was my ideal kind of Doctor and will always be my personal favourite. Capaldi got to live his lifelong dream of becoming the Doctor, and he delivered a portrayal that will forever be remembered for many years to come. I still miss him deeply, just like you would miss a very dear friend who will always be with you.

  • @HaaruteLIVE
    @HaaruteLIVE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +336

    Another thing to keep in mind is that Peter himself grew up watching Doctor Who in the 60s and was a hardcore fan during those early years, so the fact that he goes back to the First Doctor's last story and has an extra adventure alongside him must be such an experience. Like Eric said, this is really good for classic fans who have stayed and cared for so long, but that also includes Capaldi and I can't imagine how awesome must that feel.
    The weird old timey bigoted jokes they gave to the First Doctor were a big miss for me though.

      Jokes are jokes.

    • @michaeldeboer9940
      @michaeldeboer9940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Well, the jokes serve multiple functions. They serve to indicate how far removed One is from Twelve, to foreshadow the coming of Jodie Whittaker and give a different dynamic to the Doctor, as he’s at the same time in awe of him but also kind of embarassed. Isn’t that how we would act if we would be face to face with our kid selves? Maybe canonically there are some discrepancies, but damn it does make a good story. It shows how much the Doctor has changed, keeps changing, how change can be good. Doctor Who is a show that constantly changes after all. “We’re all different people throughout our lives” Matt Smith said in his final speech. For better and for worse.

    • @firefly24601
      @firefly24601 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I remember Peter saying in conventions (during series 8 and 9) that the villain he'd like his Doctor to face most were the original Cybermen. Moffat obliged. :)
      Some of the bigoted First Doctor lines were not originally given to him by Moffatt; the Doctor actually said them in episodes in the 60s. I can clearly remember him threatening Susan with giving her a jolly good "smacked bottom." I can't remember which other lines Hartnell spoke, but many lines we now see as grumpy, cantankerous and tolerable because it's a black and white episode in the 60s, really do stand out when put in a contemporary setting. I do think there were too many of them in this episode, though.

    • @HaaruteLIVE
      @HaaruteLIVE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@michaeldeboer9940 My problem is not with the purpose they served, but with what the lines themselves were. They were jokes in bad taste. Given that is subjective, but I don't think threading that line should be a thing you go for to begin with. You didn't mind them? That's good, I'm glad for you. Other people did though.
      Also I don't think reducing the First Doctor to "well grandpa always says sexist shit at dinner, please don't mind him" is in any way doing him justice. Kind of the opposite really.

    I said this before and I will say it again if Doctor Who was to end as a show, then this episode would have been (Not Perfect) a satisfying or good way to do it. They can keep the war doctor but if they get rid of the 2nd David Tennant regeneration then that would have made Peters Doctor be the last Doctor of the cycle. The story of the last doctor convincing the first doctor to keep going all while knowing that this is his last life and also the fact that there isn't really an enemy for the story I think makes it better gives more time for the characters and the struggle they face in the story. Also having it be (roughly) taking place during in my opinion the biggest act of kindness and love the Christmas armistice, also Peters last monologue to Bill and Nardole really makes it act like this is the end of the entire thing. I could go on for ages explaining how this is a, again not perfect, but
    a satisfyingly good end for the show, there are things I would change to make it a lot better but for what we got I'm happy with.

      @@jeckjeck3119 Agree to disagree. It's still got all the main issues I had with Series 11. For me, the quality of the writing isn't what makes a show. The quality of the story isn't what makes a show. Sure, they both help, but they're not why I like stories. It's the heart, the soul, the passion for the story and the creativity. It's why the prequel Star Wars films are my favourite Star Wars Trilogy, despite the writing being pretty bad in some areas. Chibnall didn't have a story to tell, he had politics to discuss. He didn't take over Doctor Who because he had a grand vision of where he wanted to take the story, to build upon the work of the previous heads, and to create a piece of art. He did it because he wanted to make Doctor Who more woke; the show, in his eyes, needed more diversity, and more left-wing politics. He didn't care about the story. Mickey, Captain Jack and Martha are some of the most popular characters in New Who, despite them all coming in succession to one another and all being minorities. People didn't complain then because there was a clear story being told. Mickey being constantly insulted by the Doctor, realising he was just letting it happen, toughening up and becoming someone The Doctor ended up respecting. Captain Jack was a man from the future who conned people, only to end up trapped within his own life. Martha liked The Doctor, but eventually began seeing that nothing could ever happen between the two and that she deserved better than post-Rose Doctor was treating her. They all had a clear story to be told, and it was evident in their very first episodes.

He started out questioning whether or not he was a good man and needing Clara to care about others on his behalf and not minding anyone's feelings when he said things. Now he cares so much even when he teases his companions and the thing he wants most for his next regeneration is for the next Doctor to be kind and never cruel and it speaks so much to his growth.

    It's great seeing you guys react to this epic episode. It was definitely one of the most-emotional episodes. David Bradley was phenomenal. One thing I wanted to mention as you were listing his different appearances throughout Who. He did actually voice a character in the spin-off, "The Sarah Jane Adventures" (funnily enough in a character which featured both Matt Smith and one of the old companions too!). Mark Gatiss has also played various characters throughout the show, as well as writing episodes numerous episodes (he's also one of the creators and writers of "Sherlock" alongside Steven Moffat). Everything changes from this point on, like it did when Steven Moffat took over. Chris Chibnall takes over from this point on, so new Doctor, new composer, new look and new feel. Finally, Jodie Whittaker was one of the main characters in "Broadchurch" ("Gracepoint" was the American remake of "Broadchurch" but had a completely-different cast apart from David Tennant and wasn't well-received.) and has been in tons of stuff through the years, including the movie "Attack The Block" featuring John Boyega and Nick Frost.

    What I've always liked about this episode is how subtle it is in bringing back elements from past Capaldi storylines. Of course, all of his companions returning is kind of obvious. Additionally, though, the Testimony creating a sort of afterlife is similar to Missy's afterlife storyline from season 8 and the manner in which the Testimony operates by freezing people in time just before they die is evocative of Clara's fate at the end of season 9. Rusty making his return is not only a call back to Capaldi's second episode as The Doctor, but it also helps make Rusty a possibility for being the so-called "hybrid" mentioned throughout season 9 (since Rusty is a Dalek who had his mind temporarily linked with The Doctor and as a result inherited The Doctor's hatred of the Daleks, thus making him a hybrid of sorts of a Dalek and The Doctor). The Captain saluting The Doctor is a call back to the Cyberman who is presumed to be the Brigadier-General saluting The Doctor at the end of season 8.

    The brigader was the head of unit from the 2nd doctors era onwards and has meet the 2nd, 3rd (who worked for unit and the brig was technically his boss), 4th and 7th (at which point he had retired) doctors on screen.

    Disappointing that Murray Gold's departure was not referenced by the guys. Love Capaldi he was a brilliant Doctor, arguably the best actor to ever play the character and such a lovely man in real life. Moffat's time was up but he had given so much to the show that I Am eternally grateful for. His final interviews with Cristel on Doctor Who The Fan show were very revealing into his experience as showrunner (Pt1 th-cam.com/video/iBwBlwGbVaA/w-d-xo.html Pt2 th-cam.com/video/ZOfIIqb8Uhg/w-d-xo.html Pt3 th-cam.com/video/bTRfKmVqdjo/w-d-xo.html

    It'd be interesting if you reacted to the three-part Steven Moffat interview that the BBC uploaded on its channel after this episode was aired. It clarifies many aspects of his run, such as River Song, the 50th, Capaldi's choice, giving up the show after a long run... I think the gang would enjoy it and it'd also help y'all understand some important aspects of the last 6 seasons.

  • @kwanarchive

    I don't think this was mentioned, but the whole thing about when you can hear the Doctor's name is something Peter Capaldi came up with on the spot at a convention, and then Steven Moffat incorporated it into the speech because it was just so good.

    This is a good epilogue to Twelve’s era aswell as a nice ending for Capaldi and Moffat ‘s run on the show .
    As someone mentioned below , it’s a nice reflection on change , death and memories wrapped in a fun romp . Capaldi and David Bradley have good chemistry together (even though I feel like they go a bit too far with the First Doctor’s sexist attitude).
    Capaldi was not my favorite Doctor but I still thoroughly enjoyed him and his arc ..from someone who was unsure he was a good man to doing the right thing because it was kind ..Goodbye 12 , we let you go!!.
    I’m interested to see your thoughts on the current era... I personally find it to be the weakest of the modern run so far but I’m still looking forward to going on the journey with you all!!.

    Jodie Whittaker was a major character in the TV Show 'Broadchurch', was in the 'Black Mirror' episode called "The Entire History of You", was in the Great movie 'Attack the Block' with John Boyega & Franz Drameh (Jefferson Jackson (a.k.a. Firestorm) from Legends of Tomorrow) .

    Another parallel between the regenerations is the ring falling off 13's hand. The same happened with the first doctor's ring after regenerating.

    That moment in that war for me is the greatest in human history. People, just regular people stopped fighting. Ignoring orders from "superiors" to not do what they were about to do. To unite for a moment. To have peace which is what they wanted, which is what everyone wanted. Only for the people with the power are the ones that want to fight. It was a middle finger to them people in power. And I love it! Don't let them divide us! Whatever race, creed, sex, sexual orientation, and age etc. Unite!

    Loved watching the Doctor Who reactions. It was an amazing way to re-experience the show. It also made me realize just how bad the show got after this, to a point where I actually find it depressing. So sadly I’m out from here. I can only hope the show will return to form when we get a new show runner, hopefully that will be sooner than later. Off to watch some more of your reactions!

    Speaking of the armies. If I'm not mistaken, each side of that battle had to be swapped out. They refused to start fighting again after the peace. Because they realized how dumb it was and they were friends.
