@@ridesofjapan i have the same plate in my shoulder. i asked my surgeon if he thought the whole thing was lighter than the "stock" bones but he refused to answer
Like you I managed to heroically save my titanium bike, when I was hit by a vehicle, by cushioning it with my ribs and pelvis and leg and hands. Six weeks later I could walk again. Thank goodness nothing but the leather saddle was scuffed on the bike. And wheels destroyed. And shifters trashed, and they cut my new expensive wool blend riding shorts off...but the frame was untouched! Yeh, them cracked ribs are hard to sleep with! Heal fast. I hear warm Sake helps - rub it on your ribs.
Your descent time on 山伏峠ダウンヒル in 2022, insane... I rode it a couple of times a few weeks ago (ultra amateur). Saitama is such a cycling paradise, you inspired me to experience it, many thanks 🙏
Wow, those injuries are gnarly. I'm glad you survived. Holy crap dude. That must have been so scary. Great video, and I'm really glad you pointed out how the hood position/handle bar angle can effect reach numbers. 10mm of additional reach is a lot. I'm sure most of us can notice a change in reach down to less than 5mm. So, 10mm, is huge. I'm sure many of us have shopped for frames looking at the reach number. If you look at the size run of modern road bikes, the entire range will only have a reach variance of maybe 30mm, with only about 5mm between each size. For example, a 47cm Trek Emonda has a reach of 373mm and the 60cm has a reach of 399mm. All that said, people will spend all this time shopping for a bike with a reach down to the mm, only to have their cockpit setup put them on a bike that is two sizes too large. So, I'm glad you've pointed out how the cockpit can drastically effect reach. That is good information for people to have.
I feel your pain, both the crash pain and the Darimo lead-time pain. I had a custom frame built in 2023, and I told the builder I wanted a Darimo IXAL2 stem.....an alloy stem. It was and is a stock size, so not custom. It still took 3 months for the stem to arrive. The frame was done before the stem. I do love the stem, in terms of both aesthetics and function, but they really need to do something about making ordering easier and delivery quicker. Heal fast and well, man.
Ended getting my darmio finishing kit for my own ti weenie build , from r2 bike ,also waited a very long time 🤣 bars are super flexible thought there were going to snap , but they have been awsome
Thank you!!! I came to same conclusions with Darimo Nexum Drag and you’ve confirmed my research. In the end I went with Avian Falcon II bars over Darimo as I can’t do the short drops as you mentioned. Love your channel, love your work! 👍
Sorry about your crash. Love your content, and mighty impressive weight. I just rebuilt my rim supersix w tubular Bora one 50mm wheels: 6.0kg w/o pedals, cages, bar tape. So, 6.4 for your spec with everything is spectacular.
The silhouette is spot on now. I didn’t like your original stem bar chunky combo either, but now it’s much more in keeping. You’ve got me looking at off the peg Ti frames on Lynskey’s website now! But do I need another bike? Love the Enve fork too, its shape suits the stem. Heal strong… fractured pelvis is no joke that must have been some tumble.
Alot of great information you have def help me get down my blackheart road ti down but def not as light but im happy 16 pounds with pedals cages and garmin mounts rear and front im happy with that in a size 54
Now it´s closer to perfection with no cables, just pure titanium. You took a nasty tumble. Hope everything is getting sorted with physiotherapy sessions.. Cheers and ride safe!
Arundel Mandible are the best cages in the world... agree 100%!!! Quite light and nice looking, but their claim to fame is tenacious grip on your bottle, it'll never drop a bottle regardless of bumpiness or terrain.
As someone who had a couple of surgeries (skiing-related), I would sacrifice my bike in a microsecond not to have those injuries that will stay with you forever. Hope you heal well, that's a crazy amount of love for a bike 🤯 (Still watched the whole thing :) )
Unfortunately I'm pretty certain that at some point in the future he will come to accept the error on that position (even if, depending on what speed he was going at, it might not have had much influence on the final, erm, "score") 💯 (cycling has gifted me with two crappy wrists btw)
Good Luck with your recovery Tobias, you could have timed it better. The way the weather is changing maybe you;ll have some nice days for your recovery rides anyway.
That front end looks gorgeous now, and lighter too. Hope those ribs heal soon. Busted ribs myself a few times skiing. Impossible to sleep comfortably. Busted my collar bone a year ago. British health system just said leave it to heal, no plate. Bit wonky now.
Depends on the break I guess… I could technically have left it, but becuase of the type of break it was likely it would limit mobility so they recommended a plate… that also meant I could start using my arm again straight away wich was key since the rest of my right side was useless 😅 Cheers!
The only time I experienced a weird ordering system like this was when I ordered custom headphones from a dude in Indonesia back in 2017. Had to use western union to send money. Somehow I didn't get scammed and I use the headphones to this day 😂. Pretty sure he has a website with an ordering system now so darimo has no excuses.
In order to protect your hands in an OTB incident use your face, that's the MTB way so I completely understand your maternal instincts to protect your baby. And that need to have confidence in our equipment while in Japan so we can avoid sending our Jiminzei costs up with an otherwise unnecessary visit to the Local hospital completely logical......perhaps? I'm getting over a broken femur so I hope your pelvis recovery is quick(no it wont be painless)!!
Take creatine monohydrate to improve bone density and healing. It's a very cheap supplement with almost no downsides (except it could negatively impacts the bowl movement in the first week; some people are non responders) even for non bodybuilders.
Thank you so much for the video. I'm almost at the final stage of building a new titanium bike and I used all your videos as a reference for myself. I have a one more question to you. What fork expander are you using with your new Enve fork and what axles did you end up with? I bought the same fork and interesting your opinion.
@@hensemzp1 sorry, all confusing now on where to reply haha. Sorry, the expander is from like 5 years ago that I had in my stash. Don’t have a link sorry. It replaces the Tune expander that seized up on me. Regarding axles, Im not really ready to spend that kind of cash on the overfast axles, there’s still other areas that put higher on the priority list personally.
By looks alone the upcoming -12deg stem will look dope, oc with little to no spacers below it 😊 if headtube and back flexibility alow. Edit, that bar flex looks a bit daunting though
Welcome to the club some say you are not a hardcore cyclist until you brake your collar bone, i broke mine 2018 before the covid apocalypse begin. Is the berk lupina unpaded confy? I have a full carbon thin padded saddle and is ok to me and i want to try a unpadded one but i dont know that depend on the pad in the short is gonna be enough 🤔🤔🤔
For the most part I like the Darimo Nexum on your bike. But I find the different carbon layups between 3K and UD on your handlebar and fork a bit of a minor aesthetic downside. I'd rather go with the same carbon layup and for my taste that would be UD on all tubes since I find the 3K to be overused the last years. But as your seat tube ist 3K I'd probably go with another 3K fork 😂. Could be even lighter!
If only you had some indium and yttrium in the bike, it could be a TiInY Weenie saga! DAMN, the pelvis!! Hell, at least you still have your smile! and of course most of your bike.
I was riding similar cages (but the china copy) and they broke in the middle of a 200k ride. Have two big spots where the water bottles ground off the paint 😭 lesson learned for me: only quality cages and 10g more are worth it.

Went for the top of the line from the start! 🤌
Swapping them is such a pain in the ass!
would be kinda funny if these parts eliminate the weight benefit of Darimo...
