Those railroad spikes with the legible markings on top might be worth quite a bit to a rail buff/collector! Normally those marks get destroyed when the spikes are hammered into the rails. A "virgin" spike is unusual, and "unusual" normally means someone will pay more for it. If you're not going to keep it, give it a light cleaning and put it up on auction!

    • @irvingbrown2389

I often collect railroad spikes as well as other metal along tracks. Rarely are railroad spikes ever worth much if anything. Almost all the spikes I find have writing on them. The only ones that are worth anything are those that come from old historical railroads or different gage tracks. I collect them to use in welding projects and the things I make with them are worth far more than anything else!! Now if you find date nails from railroad tracks, they are worth money to collectors. They used to be in the tie’s of old railroads showing the date that they were made. They are rare to find. But definitely you can still find them. I’ve collected all kinds of steel along the tracks, for actual rail to spikes, plates, anything used in the making of the tracks I’ve found and collected and use to make various things. I have some spikes from the cog railway up mount Washington. It’s one of two cog railways that still exist in the world. The other is in Switzerland. One used to exist in the Catskills near where I live. Spikes like those can be worth something to a collector because no more exist. The straight nice spikes are ones that are unused, dropped from the machine that makes the tracks. Those squiggly pieces, I have tons of them. I’d love to know where they are worth anything and to who because I’ll be rich if I find them!! lol. They still use many of these things today to make and repair tracks. Thanks for your reply. If you have knowledge of who buys these things, I’m all ears , if you know something, I’ll cut you in on the profits!! If I were to go out today and walk the tracks I could fill a garbage can with spikes and the squiggly ones, plates, whatever. I will use the spikes to make a welded star. I weld a section of chain at the top to hang it!! The squiggly pieces I’ve used for chair legs, handles. All those spikes he found that are straight are just newer spikes and all have different numbers on them. Those new straight spikes won’t look like that in a year or two. They rot right away!! The older ones were made better. Idk about where he is but in the Catskills in upstate NY there’s different train tracks everywhere. Also old historical railroads that are no longer used. Those are the ones that have old things worth money to collectors. But who knows maybe someone out there paying money for this stuff that idk about. That would be awesome for sure. Because I can get this stuff anytime and just pick it up off the ground. No magnet fishing involved!! There’s so much of it you wouldn’t believe!!

I love watching these videos and thinking of all the possible stories and scenarios that lead to the items falling into various pools of water, it could be anything from a clumsy railroad working dropping a spike, a kid accidentally crashing their bike in the lake, all the way to someone throwing away a gun after a crime. After watching these vids I'm pretty sure I've seen it all. (But then he posts a new video finding a new item and the whole process of wonder happens over again)

My last reenactment at G-burg we had a battery forge and blacksmith. I ask him about railroad spikes. He told me that they were low grade iron / steel used _mostly_ by beginners in metal working, as they are easier to work with. For these purposes it probably doesn't matter if they are straight.

    Hey Tyler.
@ 3:42 I'm not 100% sure, but that looks one of the wedges that track gangs used to use to move tracks into place as they were laying rail. Check out some of the videos on TH-cam for track gangs. They worked in a cadence and were amazing.
@ 22:26 you may have found the floor of a step from a locomotive.
You're finally getting it that the railroad item are better $$$ than scrap price. Plus, those pieces get into the hands of collectors. If you clear that brand new spike up so we can see the writing on the head, I can look that up and tell you what it means. And most importantly, thanks for letting me see the train. The GT engine stands for Grand Trunk railroad. The CN unit is an ex Illinois Central locomotive (you may have noticed the IC on the side under the window.). The CN stands for Canadian National who bought both of those lines.
Here's a video showing the Gandy dancers lining track using that grat big bar you caught.

Do you clean your rusty find? I do this on my tools. 😊
To tackle items with significant corrosion, submerge your rusty tools or knives in a bowl of white vinegar and let them sit overnight or as long as 24 hours. Once they have had a good soak, remove them from the vinegar and scrub the rust off with steel wool, a scouring pad, or a wire brush.

So I worked at a scrap yard in Oregon & someone brought in old railroad track rails. The next day police showed up looking for it. Turns out it was stolen from private property & was told that before we could buy railroad iron we needed a bill of sale from the railroad to possess or sell. The person brought more in a few days later & the manager was charged with federal charges & jail time for purchasing it. Found out pretty quick they don't mess around when it comes to railroad iron as it is government owned. Even the property owner needed a bill of sale if they wanted to sell anything previously owned by the railroad.

Keep at least two plates as well as the spikes and that pole which could have been what someone had used to make spikes. Need to make friends with a blacksmith--you get him supplied with iron, he would make you knives and other useful items, maybe shepherds hook to hang flower baskets from.

With all the RR spikes, plates, and clamps you just need to find some more pieces of RR track and you could almost start your own RR line. Lol!
Keep up the great videos and great finds Bro!

Those big pieces are packing some weight. We just found some of the same stuff at our local railroad bridge. Those Boss magnets are killer. Good job 👍

That long pole thin could be from a part of a switch for the tracks you know for changing tracks

They must've gotten tired of watching you unload your truck piece by piece-- or you made friends with the magnet controller. What a relief that must be.
