The object at 8:30 is part of the pumping system of an old wooden ship. In Dutch it is called the pompemmer or pomphart. Probably from a 16th-18th century wooden ship, but starting in the middle ages, ships would have these pumping systems for getting rid of water accumulating at the bottom inside. To be specific, you've found the part that moves inside the wooden pump pipe by pumping; the leather on it creates a vacuum in the pipe and allows water to be sucked up through the tube and up to the deck level, where it runs off through the scupper holes (het loopt de spuigaten uit). Pretty interesting for a loose find, usually you find them in old shipwrecks.
Another very interesting magnet fish. A golden rule in the metal detecting fraternity and a sigh of respect for the environment is after you dig a hole , you fill in the hole. The same goes for magnet fishing, regardless of what you pull out, you should never throw anything back. Metal detectorists have gained a bad name amongst public for holes that have been left open on beaches and parks. It takes a few to spoil the hobby for everyone and at the end of the day we complain because laws are enforced preventing these hobbies. You pull it- you keep it!
When we saw Hennie throwing something back in the water near the beginning of the video he was likely just throwing back some mussels that were attached to the metal scraps.
Whenever we pull out any junk we always pilot up next to the bins and the council take it away. Never throw your metal back into the canal or river this is giving us a bad name
Enjoy your magnet fishing. You are a joy to watch in your discoveries. I agree with the rest of the folks here, tell those guys to put their trash in the bins not back in the water. What do you do with the findings you keep? Do you ever sell them? Great channel.

Where did they throw the garbage back in? At the end of the video, they're putting the large plastic bag full of garbage in the trash. Also, at the end of the video, they are washing off the mud with buckets of water so as not to leave it there. They're not throwing everything back.
@@ChingFong58 - All I saw them throw back were weeds that stuck to their finds and mud. If they threw back anything else my old eyes didn't see it on my phone. If they magnet fish the same area again they'd waste time and effort pulling out the same stuff if they threw it back in.

That is a lock blade knife. When the blade is opened it locks into place so one does not accidentally close while in use and slice themselves open. That button is the release so you can close it. It looks like a Buck knife.
It would be nice if the city would put trash dumpsters on each side of the canal, so the trash does not get thrown back in, and it would help clean it out, and keep the finds that are good.
They had a rubbish bag that they were putting the trash in to put in the bin.....little bits of metal are no problem they just rust away back to nature..it’s the plastic that’s the worst
