What are those Funky Tires on New Kubota and LS Tractors?

  • Walking around the National Farm Machinery Show you notice some of the new tractors have a different tire on them. It looks a little like an R-4 industrial tire but it has lugs on the outside that look like an R-1 agricultural or "ag" tire. What is it?
    Turns out, the folks at Goodyear/Titan have taken the best characteristics of the R-4 tire, the wide footprint, and mated that with the aggressive lugs of the R-1 tire to get a hybrid they're calling the R-14 (R-1 and R-4 together). In this video we look at the advantages of this new tire.
    In large part, this tire was developed so customers who owned a tractor with agricultural tires that wanted a wider footprint, could buy new tires to fit the ag rims. Before they had to change both the tires and the rims to get a less aggressive footprint.
    If you ever attempt a tire type change on your 4wd tractor, you need to put the same sized tire back on it that came off of it. Otherwise, when engaged in four wheel drive, the front wheels can be working against the back wheels and causing premature driveline wear.
    Some Kubota and LS tractors are now coming from the factory with R-14's and they look good and should function well in both field and turf conditions. I'd bet we'll be seeing more of them on tractors going forward.

    It is baffling that R4s took over the compact utility market. They are awful in snow and damp grass. I look forward to more R14 options and Versaturfs as well in the future.

    Those R14 Actually look good. I have Titan AG tires on my new LS MT573, Excellent tires made in the USA. I really like that these R14 come in the same size, don't have to get new wheels. It drives me nuts seeing every new tractor with R4 tires because most of the time they are totally inappropriate. Love seeing those guys get stuck in the mud. The R14 look like an Excellent Blend of the 2 types of Treads.👍👍

    Those look interesting. I'll be looking for somebody field-testing them in the mud, wonder if they'd load up no less than a regular turf tire, kinda looks like they would.

    Eroupe has been using some similar tire like that for years haven’t they? Titan has been making many advancements lately in tire tech makes a guy wonder why this has not been done in the past or maybe the status quo was just fine for years and nobody poured resources at the ag tire.

    I used a hand sipper to sipe my B21 tiers and it gives me lots of traction for snow removal. Even my craftsman garden tractor will now turn around on HILLSIDE s. Sipping was invented buy a NAVY sailor because he was sick of slipping on wet decks. American inventors!

    I have the R-14's on my new L2501. They have done well so far, but this is my first tractor and I have nothing to compare them to. What I have noticed, they are very easy on the lawn, and don't load up with mud to terrible. I have had them spin while using the loader, but the L2501 isn't a real heavy weight and I haven't developed my loader skills yet. I will be fluid filling the tires soon. I did notice the tire rubber compound is a pretty soft mix. The cleat height doesn't set up to high and looks like it's a half worn tire, lol.. so I'm curious about the wear time. My tractor will probably never see any road trips tho. Honestly, they remind me of a high quality sport ATV tire. If I look at the R-4's long enough, they start to look like a racing slick because of the large amount of surface contact area on the cleats. The R-14 looks like a good compromise of cleat surface area and cleat spacing if that makes sense. They are still pretty new to the community in general so maybe my review and others later on will help everyone make an informed decision on using them. I'm a Newbie, first tractor owner, no experience, and I def didn't get paid by a vendor for my review.....I only got a fat payment book, LOL.

      The Versa Turf tire that John Deere uses might even be superior. It has a similar open design and I believe all sizes of it are radial, which I believe is a desirable feature. I believe not all sizes of the Titan R14 are radial.

  • @4-LOW

    I wish tractor tires were all sized in the same standard. There are like 3 different ways the sizing is stamped on the tire and it really makes shopping hard. Mine are 43x16.00R20 which is a cake walk to decipher. This 13.6-24 B.S. makes no sense and requires a chart to figure out the diameter.

  • @chevyon37s
    @chevyon37s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ag tire sizing needs to be more standardized. The metric sizing gives a more accurate representation as to what the actual size of the tire is vs getting a width and wheel/rim size that the mfg. May have a different sidewall height than the next mfg.

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? To you maybe. Sizes should be where anyone can read them in metric and inches and standardized like some of the tools that are the same in size. It is what it is and different people have a different idea on sizes and measuring. It can be done in the best interest of everyone but seldom is.

  • @davebarnessr.5805
    @davebarnessr.5805 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve got the Titan R4’s on my Kubota L4701 and I’m happy with them, they are not hard on the turf when in 2 wheel drive and offer great traction on a variety of surfaces when I go back to 4wd, . I am curious if the raised knobys on the outer sides of this new R14 won’t be just a bit harder on the turf, just by the way they look? But in my case, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

    Even with turf tire's a real man can easily still pull a 140' tall white pine through slick Clay mud. What you do is rapidly wiggle your A$$ side to side....simple as that!
    My Deere has real AGs as I'm never on blacktop unless I feel like cruising down to the local gas station, but it has road hop so it isn't fun after the first 3 miles lol
    Nokian has some awesome treads available, can't wait to see where these newer type tires go. Firestone SAT2 is what I plan on next as slightly more lugs at a better straight line angle shell bite better in snow and ice (obviously even city boys know turfs are the best snow/ice tire) yet still pull the big ole Deere through the soft forest loam/mud.

      I can tell you that I put a set of these on my JD F932 mower. Had turf tires previously that were well worn. My back yard is pretty steep down hill and solid clay. My kids kept burying the mower up to the frame. I put the tires on at the end of last season and I haven't had to pull it out yet. I will say that if you are the kind of guy that has a manicured yard you're not going to like what the tires do when you make a sharp turn. For me I'd rather not have to pull my mower out of the mud so I'm ok with the grass getting torn up a bit.
